Rivers: Some elders now speaking like children, Wike’s aide chides Ada George

Lere Olayinka, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, has said that it was unfortunate that some elders in Rivers State, who played ostrich when suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara was acting like an emperor are now speaking like “children who lost their most priced toys.”

Olayinka, in a statement on Thursday, described it as funny and unfortunate that a former Governor of Rivers State, Ada George, who was among those clapping for Fubara, when he was sitting on the salary and other entitlements of fellow indigenes of Rivers State, who are members of the State House of Assembly is now speaking on who should be blamed for the state of emergency in the State.

During a media briefing, Ada George had accused the FCT Minister of orchestrating the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, including the imposition of a state of emergency and the appointment of sole administrators in all 23 local government areas.

Responding, the FCT Minister’s Spokesperson, who said people like Ada George lacked what it takes to be called an elder, said; “unlike these people masquerading as ‘Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum’, genuine elders sit in a position of neutrality when there are conflicts among younger ones so that they will enjoy credibility and respect while sitting on the high table to resolve the issues.”

He said; “When Fubara was orchestrating the burning and demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly, supposed elders like Ada George were hailing him. They were telling him it was normal for three members to run a House of Assembly of 32 members, with 11 as a quorum of one-third that can sit and 22 as two-thirds that can pass budgets.

“When the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, intervened in the crisis and resolutions signed by all parties, it was this same Ada George that described the President’s intervention as ‘executive rascality.’

“He (Ada George) went further to say that the intervention by the President ‘contravened the doctrine and practice of separation of powers and unilaterally suspended the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.’ They were everywhere calling the President a meddlesome interloper and hailing Fubara.

“Even when the Supreme Court ruled and made unambiguous pronouncement, Ada George and his so-called elders still saw no reason they should tell Fubara to come down from his high horse of arrogance and lawlessness. Rather, they watched as he reeled out threats upon threats, including openly saying that he would give instructions as to what to do at the appropriate time.

“True to his threats, Fubara gave instructions and Nigerians saw the outcome when oil pipelines started coming up in flames.

“Now that Fubara’s lawlessness has resulted in the imposition of emergency rule, the same elders who failed to stand and act like real elders are sobbing like children whose most priced toys have been taken away. It is funny and unfortunate.

“They have even turned themselves to monitoring spirits, monitoring when Wike comes to Rivers State and when he leaves as if it has now become illegal for a Minister to visit his home state and associate freely with the people.”While telling Ada George and his Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum to blame themselves for taking side when they should be neutral, Olayinka said; “the moment an elder takes side in a conflict between two children, such an elder has lost the rights to intervene and ressolve the conflict.”

I believe in you’ – Wike celebrates Gov. Okpebholo’s tribunal victory

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, has congratulated the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, over Wednesday’s tribunal judgement, which affirmed his victory in last September’s governorship election in the state.

Expressing confidence in the ability of Okpebholo to deliver on his electioneering promises, Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged him not to be distracted by elements seeking to grab power through the back door.

“Wike, who urged the governor to remain focused, said Governor Okpebholo should avoid being distracted by those who are only interested in getting power through the back doors,” said Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media.

The minister described the victory as a further confirmation of the mandate freely given to the governor by the people of Edo State.

According to him, the victory was for the people of Edo State, who elected Governor Okpebholo, urging greater commitment to the service of the people.

While expressing confidence in the ability of Governor Okpebholo to bring succour to the people of Edo State, Wike said, “I believe in him, and with the way he has started, I believe that his government will impact positively on Edo State and its people.”

Why we want to celebrate Tinubu, Wike in Bayelsa  — PDP secretary

George Turnah, the Zonal Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in South-South and Convener of Bayelsa Mega Rally for Tinubu and Wike has explained why Bayelsa is the ideal place to celebrate President Bola Tinubu and his minister, Nyesom Wike.

Turnah said the planned rally by the New Associate group is not an endorsement of President Tinubu’s second term.

The New Associate group is reportedly a PDP faction loyal to the former Governor.

Speaking on Arise Television’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, the PDP member said in addition to the rally, the group plans to thank and celebrate Wike and President Tinubu for appointing some notable sons and daughters of Bayelsa State into his administration.

“Why are we doing the rally in Bayelsa? The New Associate is a grassroot organisation. We want to inaugurate the Bayelsa State chapter and in doing so, we also want to do a rally to thank Mr President for his choices of appointment of some notable sons and daughters of Bayelsa State, which in our estimation are performing and doing very well,” he explained.

Recall that the Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State recently warned against the group’s plan to organise a rally or host Wike in his state.

Given the recent political crisis in neighbouring Rivers State, the governor said the planned rally is a plot by a ‘PDP renegade’ to disrupt the peace in his state.

“As you are aware, we have threats from our sister state. The political crisis there is threatening us and we will not allow what is happening there to come into Bayelsa State.

“Any attempt to import the Rivers State political crisis into Bayelsa will be resisted. I urge security commanders in the state to be on the alert. Parents and traditional rulers should discourage their wards and children from being used by unscrupulous elements to cause trouble in the state,” Governor Diri warned.

Despite the governor’s warning, Turnah said the rally would take place in the state but not on any Bayelsa State Government property.

Rivers Crisis: MASSOB backs Wike, blames Fubara for reneging

Founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike has taken a swipe at Simi Fubara of Rivers State for not keeping to whatever terms of agreement between him and his godfather, Nysome Wike, which he said was responsible for the present state of emergency declared in the state.

In a video he released on Thursday, the Biafra agitation leader took sides with the Minister for Federal Capital Territory, Wike, stating that he who goes to equity should have clean hands.

Uwazuruike stated that even though he was taking an unpopular position, natural justice demands that agreements should be kept even among thieves.

According to Uwazuruike, the crisis in Port Harcourt affects and is prevalent in both the south east and south south geopolitical zones of Nigeria, noting that the crisis would have been avoided if one party kept to agreement.

“If you know that you’re a politician and that you are approached to do a dirty job which your conscience doesn’t permit you to do, at that inception say I won’t, I can’t do it. That makes you a gentleman. It’s very common in the south east and south south where somebody will bring you out from the obscurity and make you a Governor, but at the end of the day you refuse to do your own part of the bargain. It not good!”

He waved the idea of people saying that the Governor was voted by the masses, stating that if a godfather had not given a party’s ticket to the beneficiary, nobody would have seen or known the candidate for votes to him.

“In this crisis, if it continues, many innocent people will die and when you trace the origin you will see that two persons reached an agreement and one party fulfill his own part of the bargain while the other refused to perform his part after benefiting from that agreement. It’s unjust and we need to look at that angle.

“If he (Fubara) had listened to the advice of former governor Fayoshe, he wouldn’t have fallen into this temptation. Nobody is a better governor because Nigeria is a corrupt nation. If you know that you cannot keep to an agreement, why should you accept it? Is it because you have been sworn in as a Governor and now has executive powers and you start flexing muscles. What has he gained now in all these?

“This is very important for our people because it’s distracting everybody in the south east and south south. We are not the only people in Nigeria, look at the other places. I’m not happy about it because it will involve the lives of our people and that is why I’m saying it. We need to weigh the balance and not just to mention Wike! Wike!! Wike is not the only devil in Nigeria politics. All the Governors in Nigeria are corrupt and no one should play the victim card here.”

Photos: Akpabio visits Wike in Abuja

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday visited the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, at his residence in Abuja.

Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, revealed this on his X account.

“The Uncommon Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during his visit to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in his residence today,” Olayinka wrote.

Though the purpose of the visit was not immediately clear, it occurred before President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara and state lawmakers for six months in the first instance.

Wike is a former governor of Rivers State and has been in a running battle with Fubara.

Wike revokes PDP’s new secretariat land

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike has approved the revocation of the land housing the new National Secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), located in the Central Business District, Abuja.

The multi-level Secretariat building which has remained uncompleted for 20 years, is situated in a prime location within the city centre.

Work commenced on the 12-story building project initially estimated to cost N16 billion in 2008.

However, after the party raised over N62billion from fundraising activities including a well-attended dinner and the sale of forms during over four electoral cycles, the project has remained uncompleted.

Niger Delta youths give Wike 48 hours to retract remarks against PANDEF, Edwin Clark

The Niger Delta youth chapter of the apex socio-political body for the South-South geopolitical zone, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), to retract his publicly disparaging remarks against the Ijaw nation and the leaders of this socio-political body.

According to the youths, it was embarrassing that Wike insulted the late former Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South Leader, Chief Edwin Clark, even in death without respecting him.

Addressing journalists on Saturday, the National Youth President of the Youth Wing, Doben Donyegha, who gave the ultimatum, said that it was annoying that Wike abused the leaders of the South-South geopolitical zone less than 24 hours after its delegation met with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Recall that the FCT minister had, on Thursday, during a media chat, described PANDEF as “the worst organisation anybody can rely on”, while also calling the board of trustee members of the body “political merchants”.

Donyegha, who also urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately sack the minister from his cabinet, said that the youth wing no longer had confidence in him and that keeping Wike in his cabinet may affect the president’s re-election chances in the Niger Delta come 2027.

The President of the PANDEF youths also asked the Code of Conduct Bureau to investigate the minister, alleging land-grabbing activities in the FCT.

Kalabari women protest, insist Wike won’t access Abalama

PORT HARCOURT: Hundreds of women from Kalabari extraction in Rivers State have barricaded the road leading into their kingdom, insisting that the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, would not access their area for the Civic Reception organized in his honor.

The women, who were adorned in black attire with white lace strapped around their heads, stormed the area as early as 7 am to commence the protest.

It would be recalled that the NEW Associates had planned to host the Minister at a Grand Reception on Saturday, March 15 in the Abalama community, Asari-Toru Local Government Area.

But the King of Abalama Kingdom, the area where the event is planned to take place, His Royal Highness, King Big Tom-Tom, had urged the associates of the Minister to cancel the event, adding that the community would not accept any political gathering at the moment.

However, it was gathered that the organizers of the event continued the preparation for the event, insisting that the event must be held as planned.

But women of different age brackets took to the road, demanding that the event must not be held in Kalabari.

The protesting women said they would not allow Wike to enter their community over his comment that the Kalabari were a minority in the state.

  • Supreme Court Ruling Deepens Rivers Political Crisis, Freezes State Funds, Nullifies LG Elections

Supreme Court Ruling Deepens Rivers Political Crisis, Freezes State Funds, Nullifies LG Elections

The political crisis in Rivers State deepened on Friday following the Supreme Court’s ruling affirming Martin Amaewhule and 26 others as valid members of the State House of Assembly. The judgment, delivered in Abuja, sparked widespread jubilation among supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Rivers State. The 27 lawmakers aligned with Wike, who benefited from the ruling, immediately convened a plenary session upon receiving the news. A viral video also surfaced showing Wike celebrating the court’s decision with political allies, including former and serving senators such as Allwell Onyesom, Magnus Abe, Kelechi Nwogu, Emeka Woke, and Chibudom Nwuche, as they sang and danced in gratitude.

Reacting to the ruling, Wike described it as a victory for democracy, emphasizing that the judgment reinforced the legal requirement for budgets to be presented to a duly constituted legislature. He criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of attempting to dismantle an independent arm of government. The Supreme Court, in a ruling by a five-member panel, upheld the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led Assembly, stating that it was unconstitutional for Governor Fubara to govern with only four out of 31 lawmakers. The justices censured Fubara for demolishing the Rivers State House of Assembly building, stating that his actions were aimed at preventing the 27 defected lawmakers from convening. Justice Emmanuel Agim, delivering the lead judgment, ordered the reinstatement of the Clerk and Deputy Clerk of the House, as well as other staff who had been unlawfully removed. He condemned Fubara’s reliance on executive immunity to justify his actions, describing it as an abuse of power, and ruled that the 27 lawmakers must be allowed to resume their duties without interference. The court further imposed a ₦5 million cost against the governor.

In a separate decision, the Supreme Court directed the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Accountant-General of the Federation to halt the disbursement of funds to the Rivers State Government until the House of Assembly is properly constituted in line with the 1999 Constitution. Justice Agim upheld a prior ruling by the Federal High Court, which had barred the release of state allocations. Furthermore, the apex court declared the October 5, 2024, local government elections in Rivers State invalid. Justice Jamilu Tukur, delivering the judgment, annulled the election on the grounds that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission failed to adhere to mandatory procedures, including publishing a 90-day notice before setting the election date. This decision reinstated an earlier ruling by the Federal High Court, which had restrained RSIEC from conducting the polls due to an outdated voter register.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule hailed the ruling, calling it a victory for democracy and the rule of law. During the Assembly’s plenary session, he criticized Fubara’s administration, alleging that the governor was running an illegitimate government with unlawful appointees. A statement issued by Amaewhule’s media aide, Martins Wachukwu, declared, “We believe Governor Fubara will repent from his legion of sins now that the Supreme Court has spoken.” Meanwhile, the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, led by Chief Tony Okocha, welcomed the verdict, stating that it resolved the long-standing executive-legislative crisis in the state. APC Publicity Secretary Chibike Ikenga, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, described the judgment as a necessary step to restore constitutional order. In contrast, a faction of the APC loyal to former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi rejected the ruling. Party chieftain Chief Chukwuemeka Eze condemned the verdict, calling it a “declaration of war against Rivers State” and a setback for democracy. However, he commended Governor Fubara for withstanding what he described as an “onslaught of anti-democratic forces.”

Responding to the ruling, the Rivers State Government stated that it was awaiting legal counsel on its implications, particularly concerning state funds and local government administration. Commissioner for Information Joseph Johnson assured residents that the government would take appropriate steps in the best interest of the state. He clarified that the Supreme Court had not ruled on the legality of the 27 lawmakers’ defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC, noting that the matter was still pending before the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt. “We believe that the determination of the main issue of defection of the 27 lawmakers is a matter not before the Supreme Court,” he stated, urging Rivers residents to remain calm. The Pan Niger Delta Forum expressed concern over the court’s decision, particularly the freezing of Rivers State’s allocations. In a statement by its spokesman, Obiuwevbi Ominimini, the group argued that the ruling could harm the welfare of the state’s residents and called for a review of the judgment. Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission issued a statement warning against premature decisions regarding vacancies in the Rivers State House of Assembly. INEC’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, stated that the issue remained sub judice, with multiple court cases still awaiting final resolution. The commission warned that any attempt to conduct elections to fill the disputed seats before a final court ruling could lead to legal complications and unnecessary financial losses.

The Supreme Court’s ruling has intensified the political crisis in Rivers State, with both pro- and anti-Wike factions interpreting the judgment differently. While the ruling solidifies the position of the 27 lawmakers, uncertainties remain over the fate of the state’s finances and the legal status of their defection. As the political drama unfolds, all eyes remain on the Federal High Court’s pending decision on the legitimacy of the lawmakers’ switch to the APC.
