I buy cars with my money not award – Portable replies artistes days after snub at Headies award

Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has slammed fellow artistes just days after the conclusion of the 2024 Headies Awards.

In a video that has gone viral, the street-hop star accused artistes of buying recognition with money, claiming he prefers to use his earnings on tangible assets.

This latest outburst follows his release from prison in Ogun State, where he served a brief sentence after allegedly assaulting a police officer.

The singer was freed after meeting the condition of a N30,000 fine.

In the video, Portable criticised the credibility of award and questioned the integrity of the awards, alleging that they are sold rather than earned.

“You’re not successful, you only bought award,” he said. “They mock me that I wasn’t given the award, but I have money. I use it to buy my cars. I’m successful. I’ve dropped an album. Are you more successful than I am? Who listens to your music?”

Taking pride in his recent collaboration with UK rapper Skepta, Portable argued that true recognition lies in global partnerships, not local awards.

“Skepta and Portable, we are the owners of the award, but they said they won’t give us,” he declared.

He concluded by stating his preference for long-term investments over the pursuit of what he described as superficial accolades.

“I would use my money to buy land, buy houses, I cannot buy fake life,” he said.

Give me N100m, I’ll fight Anthony Joshua – Portable

Nigerian street-hop sensation Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has opted out of his planned celebrity boxing match with fellow artiste Darlington Achakpo Okoye, a.k.a. Speed Darlington.

The controversial singer made the announcement in a video posted to his Instagram page, where he dismissed Speed Darlington as an unworthy opponent and instead called out former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.

“I’m not fighting Speed Darlington again; I want Anthony Joshua with 100m,” Portable declared in the viral clip.

He went further to suggest that Speed Darlington was only leveraging the proposed bout to promote his upcoming show scheduled for April.

He also boasted about his superior status in the music scene, claiming he is bigger and more influential than Speed Darlington, who was released from Kuje Prison in January after being detained for allegedly defaming Afrobeat star Burna Boy.

This dramatic twist comes just days after Speed Darlington began training in preparation for the now-cancelled match. In a mocking video posted online, he was seen buying a coffin before heading to the gym with his trainer — a move many interpreted as a jab at Portable.

The rapper had also been spotted throwing punches and working on his fitness in anticipation of the clash.

The highly anticipated celebrity boxing event was scheduled to take place on April 18, 2025, at the Balmoral Convention Center in Lagos State. However, Portable’s decision to pull out has cast uncertainty over the bout, effectively putting an end to the showdown between the two entertainers — at least for now.

Court adjourns Portable’s case until March 26 for substitution

An Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court has adjourned the case against popular Musician Habeeb Okikiola a.k.a Portable, to March 26 to enable the prosecution merge his charges with those of his workers.

When the case against the artist resumed on Wednesday after his earlier arraignment on Feb. 20, the prosecution told the court that it would be a waste of the court’s time to hear the case of Portable and that of his workers separately.

Mr Timileyin Oredein, Senior State Counsel, told the court that Portable’s case had a sister case, which needed to be merged before trial begins.

Oredein reminded the court that the musician and nine of his workers were earlier arraigned on Feb. 6 on similar charges.

He said that it would be a waste of time if the defendants were tried separately.

Oredein prayed the court to give a short date for the charge to be merged and substituted.

Portable and his workers were arraigned on five-count charge of conspiracy, assault, unlawful obstruction while armed with cutlasses and a gun and conduct likely to cause the breach of the peace.

They were also arraigned for allegedly assaulting three officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Breaking: Portable turns self in at Lagos SCID

Musician Portable has turned himself in at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in the Yaba area of Lagos.

Our correspondent confirmed the development from the spokesman of Lagos Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Wednesday.

    Historical background

Portable, born Habeeb Okikiola, was declared wanted by the police in Ogun State following his refusal to meet with officers over an alleged attack on state officials.

Yesterday, Portable posted a video alleging he is a “madman” receiving treatment at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta. He made the statement while pleading with Nigerians and the Ogun State Government following the police’s declaration of him as a wanted individual.

The Command on Wednesday dismissed his claims. The police insist the singer remains wanted in connection with an alleged assault on government officials.

However, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, maintained that Portable must surrender himself for investigation.

“Portable will come and submit himself. He cannot be in the psychiatric hospital in Aro. Everybody knows he is a wanted person. If he is in any facility, the police must be informed. He is a wanted man,” Odutola said.

The police declared Portable wanted after an alleged violent confrontation with three officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Ota Zonal Office. The affected officials—TPL Onabanjo Abidemi, TPL Raymond Lateef, and TPL Ridwan Oyero Akinlesi—were reportedly attacked during an enforcement exercise at Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu Ota, Ogun State.

According to the officials, they first encountered Portable’s father at Odogwu Bar, who claimed the singer was unavailable. Shortly after, Portable allegedly arrived with a firearm and, along with nine thugs, attacked the unarmed officials. The officials sustained injuries but managed to escape and report the incident to the Ota Area Command, which later transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

While nine of Portable’s associates were arrested, the singer reportedly fled the scene and has been in hiding since.

The police revealed that multiple invitations were sent to Portable, requesting his appearance at the command’s headquarters, but he repeatedly ignored them without providing any legal representation.

“Following his repeated evasion, the Ogun State Police Command has obtained a valid court order declaring him wanted,” Odutola added.

Reacting on Instagram, Portable claimed he was being framed due to his association with Senator Adeola Solomon, popularly known as Yayi, who represents Ogun West. He also reiterated that he has a mental health condition and receives treatment at the psychiatric hospital.

“I fear government. I am a Federal Government liability. I am a madman and take medications regularly. You can confirm from Aro Hospital—I have a patient card. I am not a thief; I help people,” Portable insisted.

In response, Damilare Oloyede, the Special Assistant on New Media to Senator Adeola, distanced the lawmaker from Portable’s legal troubles.

“Portable should be responsible for once. Senator Yayi won’t help him in this predicament—it is purely a result of his irresponsibility, lack of decorum, and display of lunacy (as he himself admitted). Name-dropping won’t help him evade justice,” Oloyede said.

He emphasized that Senator Yayi is a law-abiding public servant who does not tolerate irresponsible behavior.

“For the umpteenth time, Senator Yayi is a responsible leader and will never tolerate irresponsible acts around him,” Oloyede concluded.
