Vested interests behind recent fake stories on NiMet – Moshood, activist

A Lagos based human rights activist, Ogunniyi Afeez Moshood, has described as unpatriotic and reckless, recent media publications aimed at tarnishing the image of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet and its management led by Prof. Charles Anosike.

The activist spoke to some journalists in Abuja on Friday while reacting to a report by an online news platform which claimed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was probing the Director General of NiMet for contract fraud running into billions of Naira.

While dismissing it as false and malicious, Moshood made reference to a similar report recently, which claimed that the Minister for Aviation, Barrister Festus Keyamo, SAN, had called on President Bola Tinubu to sack Prof. Anosike, saying there was no such call by the Minister, adding that such reports were not only wicked but unpatriotic.

He said that the recent story which insinuated that the NiMet Chief Executive Officer, was being questioned by the anti-graft agency over alleged contract fraud and similar ones, must be the handiwork of disgruntled elements at NiMet who are desperate to force themselves into power by all means, using the instrument of blackmail.

According to the publication under reference. an interrogatory correspondence by the EFCC, dated March 28, 2025, had requested Prof. Anosike to provide information regarding the list of contracts executed by NiMet from 2023 to date.

But Moshood said although the EFCC wrote to the NiMet management; that the letter was not addressed to Prof. Anosike but to the agency with attention to the Heads of Procurement and Human Resources Departments, adding that the letter requested the two directors to supply information basically on two issues, namely, contracts awarded in 2021 and travel documents.

He noted that this was contrary to the claims in the publication that EFCC requested for documents for contracts from 2023.

The activists also said that the heads of Procurement and Human Resources, have supplied the EFCC with the documents as requested.

He said- “It would be noted that while the EFCC wanted information on contracts awarded in 2021, Prof. Charles Anosike assumed office as Director General of NiMet in December 2023.

“It was also found that NiMet does not have the resources to award contracts worth ‘Billions of Naira,’ as contained in the report, in view of its statutory allocations of the agency.”

According to him, there have been media reports in recent past, that an internally vested interest has been colluding with detractors to tarnish the image of NiMet management with special focus on the office of the Director General of the Agency and made reference to an Abuja based Labour Dispute Resolution analyst, Wakili El-Habib, who he quoted to have said in an opinion piece, that two top management staff of NiMet are in bed with vested interests, while using a few labour leaders to prosecute an underbelly agenda against the management of the agency.

Ogunniyi Afeez Moshood however praised workers of NiMet who he described as hardworking, committed and dedicated citizens who are patriotically working day and night, to ensure safety of Nigeria’s airspace and other aspects of national security.

He commended the management of NiMet, and especially its Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike for the various giant strides recorded within less than two years that he was appointed by President Bola Tinubu and urged him to ignore detractors while remaining focused on his mandate. Adding that the President has his independent mechanism to monitor the performance of those he appointed into critical leadership positions.

NiMet warns of intense heat in Gombe, Abuja, Kano, others

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of severe heat stress in Gombe State and 17 other northern states.

The other states are Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This is contained in its weather outlook released on Friday and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Saturday by Gayus Musa, the meteorological manager for Gombe State.

The agency said temperatures were expected to rise up to 40 degrees Celsius from Saturday, causing thermal discomfort in the affected states.

“After 3 days of rainfall, discomfort levels are set to rise from April 12 due to high temperatures and clear skies.

“Maximum temperatures in the north are reaching up to 40°C; with clear skies and moisture in the air, heat and discomfort will be more intense.”

Musa urged Gombe residents to take proactive measures, as extreme heat had significant health implications.

He warned that the rising temperatures and high humidity levels could cause thermal discomfort.

He advised residents to, therefore, avoid excessive sun exposure and seek cooler environments while recommending drinking plenty of water and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.

“I advise residents to stay in well-ventilated areas, wear breathable clothing, drink plenty of water, avoid peak sun hours between 12pm and 3pm, and use sun protection.

“Also, let’s always check up on vulnerable persons like our children and the elderly persons in our communities,” he said.

He urged stakeholders to create more awareness about heat stress risks and preventive measures essential for healthy living. (NAN)

NiMet predicts early rainfall in Anambra, Lagos, others

Abuja—The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has released its 2025 seasonal climate prediction, SCP, forecasting early rainfall events in several parts of the country.

Specifically, early rain is expected to be seen in Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra and sections of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi states but the onset will be delayed in parts of the North Central Nigeria.

According to NiMet, the onset of rains will be delayed over Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa and Kwara states.

In terms of the end of the rainy season, NiMet predicted that Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, FCT, Ekiti and Ondo states would see an early cessation.

Meanwhile, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Benue, Lagos, Kwara, Taraba, Oyo, Ogun, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra and Enugu states are expected to experience a delayed end.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who officially unveiled the document in Abuja, yesterday, described it as a crucial tool for national planning and disaster preparedness.

Speaking at the unveiling, with the theme, “The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development,” Keyamo said the SCP provided critical insights for various sectors, enabling proactive planning and risk mitigation.

“The SCP document offers insights into expected weather and climate patterns, equipping various sectors with the foresight needed to plan, mitigate risks, and harness opportunities.

“Agriculture, disaster risk management, health, marine operations, transport—and especially aviation—are among the many domains that will benefit from this invaluable resource and advisory,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, underscored government’s efforts to make climate information accessible to all Nigerians.

In his remarks, NiMet’s Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, called on stakeholders to actively utilise the SCP,  stressing that climate predictions were time-sensitive and required swift action.

“The seasonal climate prediction, SCP, is perishable, just like other weather and climate predictions. It requires actors to uptake the information, utilise it, and provide feedback for evaluation and improvement of the document,” Prof. Anosike said.

He also expressed appreciation to members of the National Assembly and state governors for their continuous support.

“My appreciation goes to members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as governors and their representatives, for accepting our invitation and gracing this important event.

“NiMet relies on your constituencies and states for subsequent downscaling of the seasonal climate prediction for maximum impact at the last mile,’’ he said.
