Assault on LASTMA Officers: Court sentences two commercial drivers to jail

A Lagos Mobile Court has sentenced two commercial drivers to three months’ imprisonment for launching a violent, coordinated mob attack on operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) while they were carrying out their lawful duties.

The sentencing took place on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

The convicts, Mohammed Musa and Muhammed Nasara, were apprehended following the unprovoked assault, which occurred on Monday, April 7, in the vicinity of LASTMA’s Central District (Zone 9), located along the Victoria Island/Lekki corridor.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, welcomed the court’s decision, emphasizing that the verdict sends a clear message to unruly elements in the motoring public, particularly commercial drivers who routinely flout traffic regulations.

He condemned the assault in strong terms, reaffirming LASTMA’s zero-tolerance stance on attacks against its personnel.

“LASTMA remains committed to enforcing traffic laws and ensuring the safe, orderly movement of all road users across Lagos State,” Bakare-Oki stated.

According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, the incident began after LASTMA officials apprehended a white commercial minibus (SMK 742 YJ) for obstruction-related traffic offenses near Mekwen Bridge, inward Flag House.

“In a show of blatant defiance, the minibus driver mobilized a group of fellow commercial operators, who arrived in two other minibuses (GGE 995 YF), and together launched a premeditated, vicious attack on the officials,” Adebayo explained.

He added that swift intervention by security personnel led to the arrest of two of the assailants, who were immediately arraigned before the Lagos Mobile Court in Oshodi.

LASTMA averts disaster as fully loaded tanker spills fuel

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has averted disaster after a fully loaded tanker overturned and spilled fuel across the main carriageway of the Oshodi-Gbagada Expressway.

The LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

The statement was signed by Mr Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA.

Bakare-Oki said LASTMA operatives promptly cordoned off the accident scene, neutralizing potential escalation, particularly the perilous prospect of fuel scooping by unauthorized individuals.

“The agency immediately escalated the situation to the Lagos State Fire Service, whose emergency response teams arrived expeditiously to mitigate the hazardous spill.

“To safeguard public safety and ensure an unimpeded traffic flow, LASTMA personnel meticulously redirected vehicular movement to the service lane from Oshodi-Oke inbound Gbagada.

“This effectively averted gridlock and mitigated ignition risks associated with fuel exposure,” he said.

Bakare-Oki commended the decisive response of its officers and emphasized that their proactive intervention ensured a comprehensive lockdown of the accident site.

He urged members of the public, especially motorists, to promptly report any road-related emergencies to the agency via its toll-free hotline 080000527862 for immediate intervention.

“Motorists are also strongly advised to exercise heightened vigilance and comply strictly with directives from traffic management and emergency response authorities to prevent avoidable tragedies on Lagos roads,” he said.

Reckless truck driver maims LASTMA officer in Lagos

Tragedy struck at the Ojodu Berger axis of Lagos State on Tuesday when an officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, was crushed and maimed by a reckless truck driver when he lost control of the vehicle in motion.

The driver of the fully loaded trailer driver with registration number Bauchi State, KTG 33 ZZ, was said to be at excessive speed when he suddenly lost control, culminating in a devastating accident at the axis.

The tragic incident transpired while the LASTMA officer was resuming his afternoon duty shift, underscoring the perilous consequences of careless driving on public roads.

Preliminary investigations, however, revealed that the ill-fated trailer was coming from Agidingbi by Oba Ogunji Road en route to Omole Junction in the Ogba corridor when the driver, while on alarmingly high velocity, lost control of the vehicle, crushing the officer.

The sheer impact of the crash inflicted severe trauma on the LASTMA officer, leading to a grievous fracture of his right leg and hand.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, for treatment.

The culpable trailer driver absconded from the scene in a brazen attempt to evade justice.

However, he was swiftly apprehended by security operatives from Ojodu Police Station, working in collaboration with vigilant LASTMA officials.

Reacting to the tragic occurrence, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, promptly visited the hospitalized officer at LASUTH,

“Upon emergency medical assessment at the Surgical Emergency Centre of LASUTH, attending specialists determined that the extent of the injuries necessitated an immediate amputation of his right leg,” Bakare-Oki stated

The LASTMA boss vehemently condemned the incident and lamented that such a calamity could have been averted had the driver exercised due diligence and adhered to fundamental road safety protocols.

He admonished trailer and truck operators, along with all motorists, to uphold the utmost sense of safety consciousness, stressing the inestimable value of human life.

“LASTMA officers are not adversaries to motorists; rather, they are dedicated to ensuring that traffic flows seamlessly, fostering economic growth and urban efficiency in Lagos State in the process,” he asserted.

Expressing profound sympathy, Bakare-Oki extended his sincerest wishes for the officer’s swift recovery while reaffirming LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to enhancing road safety and ensuring orderliness on Lagos highways.

He assured the government would ensure that the patient received all necessary medical attention for full recovery. ” The Government will not abandon you; we are with you throughout this difficult period.”

LASTMA impounds 125 Danfo, 48 private vehicles in Lagos Island

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have apprehended 125 recalcitrant commercial buses and 48 privately owned vehicles for flagrant violations, including unauthorized parking and severe road obstructions on Lagos Island.

The vehicles were impounded during a sting enforcement operation designed to restore traffic discipline and facilitate unhindered vehicular movement.

This sweeping crackdown was executed across notorious gridlock-prone corridors, such as Idumota, Ijaye Street, Martins, Ereko, and Nnamdi Azikiwe, by Tom Jones, Ebute-Ero, Oyingbo, Ijora, Adeniji Adele, and Iddo.

The General Manager LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, acting under the strategic directive of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, said the rigorous enforcement underscores LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to eradicating chronic traffic congestion and mitigating reckless road practices, particularly among commercial transport operators and private motorists who flout established regulations.

A significant number of the offenders were caught engaging in perilous maneuvers, such as driving against traffic (one-way) and executing hazardous reversals from Iddo to Idumota to pick up passengers — reckless actions that have caused multiple road accidents and senseless loss of lives.

The initiative specifically targeted unauthorized garages that have long served as catalysts for intractable gridlocks, inflicting undue hardship on commuters and residents alike.

Reaffirming that this crackdown represents an ongoing and sustained effort, Bakare-Oki stressed the agency’s commitment to the Lagos State Government’s vision to optimize the efficiency of the metropolis’ transportation infrastructure.

“The state government remains resolute in its enforcement of traffic regulations and the restoration of order on our roads. The proliferation of illegal garages and indiscriminate obstructions by both commercial and private vehicles continues to be a formidable impediment to our goal of achieving seamless mobility within Lagos.

“These stringent enforcement measures serve as an unequivocal warning to all road users that flagrant disregard for traffic laws will no longer be tolerated.

“Our ultimate objective is to cultivate a transportation ecosystem that is safe, orderly, and highly efficient for all road users. This enforcement drive represents a pivotal step toward actualizing that vision,” Mr. Bakare-Oki reiterated.

He further highlighted that notorious congestion hotspots such as Iddo to Idumota, Oyingbo, Ebute-Ero, and the Adeniji Adele roundabout are noted for illegal parking and the proliferation of makeshift garages — an issue that must be decisively addressed.

“The indiscriminate operations of commercial bus drivers not only obstruct vehicular movement but also constitute a grave hazard to pedestrian safety. LASTMA’s intervention is imperative to dismantle these bottlenecks and facilitate seamless traffic circulation in these critical locations,” he added.

In response to this enforcement, residents and business owners have commended the effort, acknowledging its profound impact on easing daily commuting and revitalizing commercial activities.
LASTMA assured the public that the operation would be systematically extended to other areas afflicted by unauthorized parking and related infractions.

The General Manager, therefore, urged all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations and cooperate with authorities to avoid punitive measures.

Additionally, he called on the general public to actively contribute to maintaining order by promptly reporting abandoned or broken-down trailers and trucks to LASTMA via the agency’s toll-free hotline: 080000527862.
