In a speech at the event held at the Government House, Owerri, Uzodimma charged them to serve and treat their subjects in a manner that pleases God.

He urged them not to see their subjects as slaves but demonstrate  the importance of honesty, peace and justice in leadership.

He also warned them against ruling their communities from diaspora, vowing to withdraw the staff of office of anyone that defaulted.

The governor also urged them to see themselves as part of government and ambassadors at the community level.

“You are recognised to support local government chairmen and counsellors to ensure that law and order are maintained in our communities,” he said.

He emphasised their role in maintaining security in their domains, saying that any traditional ruler that joined in causing insecurity would be dethroned.

“If I see that you are not able to manage security in your community, we will change you.

“Raise vigilance groups and work with the youth to defend your communities,” he said.

The governor charged them to work with his administration, and not to allow anybody to use them to fight or undermine the government.

According to him, anybody who wants to fight government should come direct.

While pledging support of his administration to the various communities, Uzodimma congratulated them and prayed God to grant them wisdom to lead their people.

Responding on behalf of the new royal fathers, the Traditional Ruler of Umuezeala/Umueme Community in Oru East Local Government Area, Prof. Peter Nnabuo, assured the governor that they would ensure that peace and tranquility returned to their communities.

  • Battle for Uzodimma’s successor begins, as ex-Imo Deputy governor insists on Imo East

Battle for Uzodimma’s successor begins, as ex-Imo Deputy governor insists on Imo East

Owerri – Ahead of Imo 2027 governorship battle, the Ex-Imo Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere on Wednesday insisted that it’s the turn of Imo East Senatorial district (Owerri zone) to produce the successor of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

Madumere spoke to newsmen in Owerri, while reacting to the unending drama ahead of 2027 Imo governorship battle.

Some of his reasons were the issue of imbalance in power rotation in the state, which has favoured more the Imo North (Okigwe zone) and Imo West (Orlu zone).

Therefore to achieve an equity and fair play, the Ex-Deputy Governor, Reflected on the journey of the state created in 1976, according to him, “the former Deputy governor stressed that while Orlu zone has had the longest rule of over twenty years producing three governors – Chief Achike Udenwa (1999-2007); Senator Rochas Okorocha (2011-2019); and the incumbent Governor, Hope Uzodimma, Okigwe has had its turn twice in the persons of the now late Chief Sam Mbakwe and Chief Ikedi Ohakim, while Owerri zone had a short-lived opportunity under the late Chief Evan Enwerem and Emeka Ihedioha.

“For a state that prides itself on unity and brotherhood, this imbalance is so glaring, even to a blind man. A state that prides itself not just as the epitome but the epicentre of knowledge and justice in the Eastern heartland, it is not only sad but most unfortunate. It has become so exigent and necessary to change the narrative. We have to be part of history in making peace, justice, and equity to reign in our state.”

Madumere insisted that “the most expedient and auspicious time to correct this is the next governorship election stressing that it is the time for Orlu and Okigwe zones to extend the same support and trust that Owerri zone has always given to them, saying, “Owerri Zone Has Always Supported Others—Now We Ask for Your Support.”

The ex-deputy governor recalled that for “over the years, Ndi Owerre have been the pillar of support for our brothers from Orlu and Okigwe. We have stood by you in your times of need, voted for your leaders, and worked with you to build Imo State. We have never been selfish or sectional in our political choices because we believe in the unity of Imo State.”

Aftermath of UNICEF Report: Uzodimma declares war against FGM in Imo

Owerri — Disturbed by a recent United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report ranking Imo State highest in the Southeast for the practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Governor Hope Uzodimma has declared a comprehensive war against the harmful practice.

According to the 2025 UNICEF report, Imo State has a 38% prevalence rate of FGM among women aged 15-49 years and a 9.7% prevalence rate among girls aged 0-14 years. This makes it the highest in the region. For comparison, the prevalence among women aged 15-49 years stands at 20.4% in Ebonyi, 20.3% in Abia, 19% in Enugu, and 13.1% in Anambra. Among girls aged 0-14 years, prevalence rates are 3.7% in Enugu, 3.0% in Abia, 2.1% in Anambra, and 0.29% in Ebonyi.

Speaking at the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM event organized by UNICEF in Owerri, Uzodimma called for grassroots efforts to combat the practice.

“I call for an urgent domestication of the war against FGM. This fight should be taken to rural communities, where traditional rulers and stakeholders will play crucial roles in bringing FGM to an end in Imo State,” he said.

The governor urged parents to take responsibility for ending the practice, highlighting that outdated cultural norms must be discarded.

“There is a new digital order in the 21st century that abhors cultures and traditions harmful to mankind. Gatherings like this are essential in uniting our efforts. By next year, when we meet again, Imo must achieve zero tolerance for FGM. We are close, and we must succeed,” he emphasized.

The wife of the governor, Chioma Uzodimma, called for mentorship programs to address both the immediate

    and long-term consequences of FGM.

She stressed Imo State’s determination to lead by example in confronting the challenge.

Chioma Uzodimma expressed gratitude to UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for their partnership and called for more holistic engagement around FGM eradication initiatives.

  • I’ll revive Warri, Koko, Burutu ports, Says Omo-Agege, Delta APC Governorship Candidate

I’ll revive Warri, Koko, Burutu ports, Says Omo-Agege, Delta APC Governorship Candidate

The Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has pledged to revive the moribund Warri, Koko, and Burutu ports and other abandoned projects with a view to boosting individuals’ and the state’s economy if he emerges governor of the Saturday, March 11, 2023 gubernatorial and state Assembly elections.

He made the pledge while interacting with the Igbo community in the state and the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Asaba to seek their support in the forthcoming elections, which will be held next weekend.

Maintaining that Delta State had remained largely underdeveloped due to the politics of opposition under Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration, he said it was important to lead the state in the right direction by aligning with the leadership at the federal level to attract and engender greater development of the state.

His words: “I want Delta State to be hooked up to the national political ‘grid’ (for want of a better expression) so that if there is anything we need as a government here, it will be easier to get it from the Federal Government. For instance, about two or three weeks ago, we were in Owerri for the presidential rally and the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma was saying that he asked President Muhammadu Buhari to convert several state projects into federal ones, which the President approved expressly.

“That can only be possible when there is synergy between the state and the Federal Government. I can get the Federal Government to do some of the projects that have been abandoned in Delta State like the Warri Port, dredging of the Escravos Bay if there is synergy between the state and Federal Government.

“Imagine what a dredged Escravos Bay and rejuvenated Warri Port where vessels are allowed to berth at the Koko Port and Burutu ports will do to the economy of Warri and the entire state and especially our brothers and sisters who are into trading, but that has not happened because there is no synergy between Okowa’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Federal government led by President Buhari of APC.”

He flayed the Okowa administration for wasting the huge resources accruing to the state, insisting the development projects under the current government fell far short of the money received in the past seven a half years alone adding: “Delta State has received about N4.2 trillion in the last seven and half years, but there is nothing remotely commensurate with that money that has come to the state.

“We have states in this country that have received less than Delta, but you can see the level of development in those states. For instance, Rivers State receives less from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) and less from derivation. But Rivers has been like a construction site in the past eight years.

“More importantly, despite all of this, Rivers State or the governor does not owe one kobo to any contractor or to any bank. Even though we receive over N4.2 trillion, Delta now owes over N850 billion to the banks and other creditors. For clarity, there is nothing wrong with taking loans. In any civilized country, they take loans for development projects, if out of N250 billion, about N10 billion is set aside to address the perennial flooding challenge in Asaba, I don’t believe anybody will quarrel with that.”

Omo-Agege also chided the state government over its negligence of the flooding challenge in the state, lamenting that the government now makes money from Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps, and once the rains start, some persons are already positioning themselves to make money for setting up IDP camps.

“Asaba is our state capital and if just N10 billion is set aside to address the perennial flooding challenge in Asaba, I don’t think anybody will quarrel with that,” he said.

Speaking further, he cited the Asaba-Kwale-Ozoro-Oleh-Isoko-Ughelli road that has been in a perpetual state of disrepair, for several years, adding: “I agree that the roads may be federal roads, but if only about N11 billion each out of the loans is dedicated to the repair and completion of these roads, I don’t believe anybody will quarrel with that. Our anger is that the debts being accumulated in Delta State were misapplied and misappropriated and not applied for the purposes that have been beneficial to all of us.”
