Court restrains Abia govt from appointing new judges

UMUAHIA – A Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, Abia State, has restrained the Abia State Government and her agents from engaging in a fresh process for the appointment of new judges in the state.

The order followed an application brought by two litigants questioning the state government’s effort to engage in a fresh process in the appointment of 10 new judges.

Abia State Judicial Service Commission, in 2022, shortlisted candidates for appointment as Judges in the Abia State Judiciary.

The candidates on October 17, 2022, attended an interview conducted by the National Judicial Council.

The candidates were also said to have been screened by the Department of State Security, DSS, and were awaiting official announcement as Judges before some people instituted a suit which stalled the process.

The state government had jettisoned the 2022 exercise and began a fresh process which angered the 2022 shortlisted applicants.

Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne and Victoria Okey Nwokeukwu had for themselves, and on behalf of the 2022 shortlisted candidates for the appointment as Judges of Abia State Judiciary, dragged the Abia State Judicial Service Commission, the Chief Judge of the state, the Attorney General and eight others before the court.

The plaintiffs sought an interim order of the court directing the plaintiffs and the defendants to maintain the status quo in the suit pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction in the suit.

The plaintiffs also prayed to the court for any further order or other orders as the court may deem fit to make in the circumstance.

After reading the affidavit of urgency in support of the motion ex parte deposed to by the 1st plaintiff, Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne; and the submission of the counsel for the plaintiffs, Obinna Nkume, the court presided by Justice S. B. Onu ordered all parties to the suit to maintain status quo ante bellum pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiffs’ motion on notice.

The court also ordered that the plaintiffs shall enter into an undertaking as to damages if the order ought not to have been made.

Speaking after the court ruling, U. U Amadi, who described himself as a concerned citizen of Abia State said until the process of appointment of Judges is insulated from executive interferences and influence, the administration of justice will be in jeopardy.

  • Abia 2027: Faces, chances of Otti’s likely challengers

Abia 2027: Faces, chances of Otti’s likely challengers

AHEAD of the 2027 general elections, Abians with governorship ambition have initiated subtitle moves and behind-the-scenes activities towards realizing their dream.

Political realignments are already going on with key players strategising and repositioning themselves for triumph

Although nobody has openly declared interest in the Abia top job, a close look at the body language of some indicate that they are interested in challenging and stopping the re-election of Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party, LP.

Some of the faces and chances of Abia governorship contestants in 2027 include:

    Alex Otti

The incumbent Governor Otti came to power in 2023 on the mantra of change. The general disenchantment and frustration arising from the performances of the then Peoples Democratic Party, PDP-led administration, paved the way for him.

Apart from the popular ‘Obi wave’ which also contributed in dislodging the PDP, Abians desperately needed a change, and saw in Otti qualities they felt were needed to change the narrative and usher in a new order.

Nearly two years down the line, Otti does not seem to have disappointed the majority of Abia populace although some of his critics still believe he should quit. His performances in virtually all the frontiers, especially the massive infrastructural transformation going on in the state, have consolidated his chances for a second tenure.

Some of his signature projects include the reconstruction of the long abandoned Port Harcourt Road Aba, now nearing completion; expansion of Umuahia main entrance road to a six-lane road; reconstruction of Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Akara-Abiriba-Ohafia Road; and Abam-Ndioji-Ndiokereke- Arochukwu road among others.

Similarly, he paid attention to renovation of secondary and tertiary health institutions in the state. The Abia State University Teaching Hospital, ABSUTH, Aba which was almost in comatose, has bounced back and regained its lost accreditation. The ongoing reconstruction of 200 Primary Health Centres across the 184 political wards in the state will surely count for him in 2027.

Under Otti’s watch, the Local Governments have been made to work in Abia. The noticeable transformations in virtually all the Council headquarters courtesy of his close monitoring cannot be easily wished away.

Another major selling point of Otti in 2027 will be his decision to clear the backlog of Abia workers’ salary arrears. Otti did not only defray the arrears as he promised during the campaigns but also consistently paid workers on the 28th of every month. Pensioners were not left out as their accumulated pension arrears for which they had staged protests against past administrations, were also cleared by Otti. These beneficiaries will naturally not hesitate to renew Otti’s mandate in 2027 for continuity.

Gov. Otti’s recent approval of a jumbo pay for traditional rulers from a paltry N15,000 that some of them were getting monthly, to N250,000 each, will definitely earn him more support in the communities.

Otti equally made some efforts in the education sector, which has for the first time received a 25 per cent budgetary benchmark. He has declared free and compulsory education up to Junior secondary three, in addition to renovation of public schools and recruitment of more teachers. He has approved imprest for school heads to ensure total abolition of fees.

    Odds against Otti

Although Otti’s popularity has been on the rise, some of his critics said he has not done so well and should be sacked in 2027. His critics accuse him of not being too open about the cost of some of his road projects. They also alleged that due process was not followed in the award of some of the projects.

A major obstacle against Otti’s second term bid is the leadership crisis that has virtually consumed his Labour Party.

The governor, in a recent media parley, claimed that the disagreements in LP had been resolved but the reconciliation needs to be seen. It is not a good signal for the ruling party to have failed woefully in the local council polls in the state. For a ruling party not to be in control of the grassroots should be a source of concern.

Some LP members who worked so hard to deliver the party in 2023, felt “used and dumped” accusing the Governor of working with imported technocrats, most of whom they say, are political neophytes. Some of these embittered persons who felt unrewarded may be waiting to take their pound of flesh in 2027.

The ability of the governor to unite LP and reconcile with some aggrieved gladiators, especially the National Vice Chairman of the party, Ceeckay Igara, may determine the fate of the party in 2027.

In spite of his performance in many sectors, some still grumble that he does not believe in ‘stomach infrastructure’. They want him to scale up in that area but he has consistently said that he did not come on board to share public funds but to judiciously deploy them for the good of all. Some also say Otti does not have a formidable personal political structure that will work for him in 2027 but the governor may be banking on his achievements instead of oiling a congregation of sycophants.

The controversy surrounding the purported forfeiture of gratuities of pensioners when the governor defrayed their backlog of arrears, may be a factor in 2027 if unresolved. Despite growing appeals for the Governor to revisit the Memorandum of Agreement, MoA, signed by the State Government and the state leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, Otti has refused to bow to pressure. His opponents may cash in on this to score political points in 2027.

Despite the odds, it may be very difficult for Abians not to renew Otti’s mandate in 2027 considering the capacity he has so far demonstrated in different sectors. Even some notable chieftains of the opposition parties and prominent Abians have openly endorsed him for a second term in office.

    Ikechi Emenike

Chief Ikechi Emenike is another APC chieftain most likely to join the governorship race considering his antecedent. The Economist has been a serial contestant but without success.

He has the financial muscle to execute his governorship project should he decide to try again in 2027. He has a lot of dreams to transform the state if given the opportunity. His wife was Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States of America, during President Muhammadu Buhari’s second tenure. Chief Emenike, no doubt has the local and foreign connections needed to move Abia forward. During the administration of Buhari, Chief Emenike was the true face of APC in Abia. He was calling the shots and gave appointments to a lot of people.

His critics say he is strong-willed, unbendable, and highly opinionated. But his close allies say he is humble.

However, he is from Umuahia that has produced a governor for eight years, which may count against him in 2027.

    Ben Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ben Kalu, is currently the highest political office holder from the South East geopolitical zone. He is of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Hon. Kalu, is one of the luckiest politicians in Abia and indeed Nigeria, having achieved so much in just a few years of joining politics. He went to the Green chamber in 2019, and has been very vocal. Kalu is sagacious and mixes up well with others, hence his emergence as the Deputy Speaker after his first term. He is believed to be the force behind the orgy of defection of prominent Abia politicians to the APC.

His role in the establishment of South-East Development Commission, SEDC, is a plus for him politically. His ability to pull Nigerians including the Vice President Kashim Shettima, to his Bende country home during the launch of his pet project, Peace in the South-East, PISE-P, spoke volumes of his political clout.

He has also been vocal in the efforts to release the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He has consistently argued that Kanu’s release would fast-track the return of peace to Igbo land. Kalu, a lawyer by training, has also sponsored many bills and motions in the Green chamber, demonstrating capacity and competence to deliver.

Although the Deputy Speaker has not openly declared interest in the Abia governorship race, some of his utterances and body language suggest he may make himself available to serve in that capacity if the coast gets clear.

Not long ago, he touted the Labour Party, when he said Otti might be the only and last Governor of LP extraction in the state. He was, however, bashed by some LP chieftains, who accused him of eyeing the Governor’s seat. They said the shoe is too big for him.

Assuming he makes up his mind to join the governorship race, pundits believe that he may not have an easy ride. His critics say he has not really achieved so much with his privileged position as the Number 6 Man in the country, a portfolio he often brags about. They say posterity will not forgive him should he fail to use his prime position to attract/compel the Federal Government to fix the Umuahia-Bende federal road which has been in a sorry state for decades.

His critics also believe that apart from his seasonal sharing of palliatives, not much has been recorded with his PISE-P project. It is yet to be seen how much peace has been restored to the zone ever since the project was launched. Some also demand accountability on the donations to the project.

Some believe that Kalu has not quite built enough structure or solidly invested enough in people that could give him the needed mileage to uproot Otti. Although he is smartly trying to build structure under different guises, political watchers believe he is yet to gain the needed state-wide acceptance that could help deliver him as governor.

His strained relationship with his political benefactor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu; as well as the alleged cold war with the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, may work against his governorship ambition.

Besides, he hails from Bende, the only LGA in Abia North that had produced governors for eight years. Equity will definitely not favour Bende when power rotates back to Abia North.

    Okey Ahiwe

Okey Ahiwe was the PDP governorship candidate in 2023, and finished second in the race. He hails from the same Isiala Ngwa in Abia Central like Otti He, no doubt, still nurses governorship ambition. Ahiwe, with the strong backing of his political godfather, ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, planted his loyalists in the leadership of Abia PDP although the outcome of the party’s congress is still a subject of litigation.

Ahiwe enjoys the support of some PDP faithful, but the leadership crisis rocking the party poses a challenge. Some former chieftains of the party have since defected to other parties.

A major obstacle before him is that many Abians still accuse the PDP, which superintended over the affairs of the state for nearly two decades and four years, of under-developing the state. They do not seem to be ready to trust the party with power any time soon except Governor Otti defects to PDP as some are permuting. Besides, some are afraid that another Ngwa man succeeding Otti who took over from a fellow Ngwa will give the clan undue advantage over other clans and political blocs in the state.

    Henry Ikoh

Chief Henry Ikoh was commissioner for Industry in Abia, and Minister of State for Science and Technology. He is a chieftain of the APC. He hails from Ahuwa Oboro in Ikwuano LGA, in Abia Central district as Governor Otti. The industrialist is a household name in Abia politics having aspired severally to be Governor under different political parties before joining the APC. His company, Harmony Foam has since bounced back after some challenges. He is also into the hospitality industry, and has the financial muscle to execute his political ambition, if he decided to run.

Chief Ikoh popularly known as Akanchawa and Ozulumba is a likable fellow. He used to have a state-wide political structure, and can easily resuscitate it for the 2027 project.

Although he has also not publicly declared interest, there are obvious indications that he is actually warming up for the APC ticket. Some groups have been beckoning him to accept the persuasion to run for the governorship seat. He has not heeded the calls but he has also not turned them down, thus suggesting that he may be testing the waters. His closeness to Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State may work in his favour.

Although Ikoh does not seem to have many enemies in the state, he does not yet seem to command the needed followership to be able to dislodge Otti.

    Uche Ogah

Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, former Minister of State for Solid Minerals, Mines and Steel Development, is also of the APC. The Onuaku Uturu-born young billoniare has severally sought the opportunity to oversee the affairs of Abia State without success.

Ogah almost sacked ex-Governor Ikpeazu in 2017 when he was issued with a Certificate of Return by the electoral umpire following a judgment of an Abuja High Court in his favour. Ikpeazu fought back to retain the seat

Ogah has not indicated any interest in contesting again in 2027, and may not contest. He supported Otti in 2023, and has not withdrawn his support for the incumbent. He has applauded some of the achievements of the Governor which according to him, are also in line with his vision for the state.

Political watchers believe that Ogah may have decided to wait for 2031 to allow Otti go for a second term. It is also believed that Ogah is currently the most favoured when power eventually rotates back to Abia North in 2031. Many see him as a governor in the making.

    Chief Emeka Atuma

Chief Emeka Atuma, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Ikwuano/ Umuahia federal constituency, is a chieftain of the APC.

Atuma contested the governorship primaries of the APC in 2023 but lost to High Chief Emenike, but was later declared the APC senatorial flag bearer of Abia Central, a declaration that triggered legal fireworks which later ended in favour of Chief Sam Onuigbo.

He recently hosted stakeholders of the party from the constituency and party leaders in the state at his Ntalakwu Oboro Ikwuano palacial home where he made it clear he would be among Otti’s challengers in 2027.

At the gathering, he took a clean sweep of Gov. Otti who he accused of performing below expectations, and vowed to retire him in 2027.

Atuma, ex-lawmaker and a rich contractor, has the political exposure and the deep pocket to execute his governorship ambition.

His philanthropic gestures will also count in his favour although politics is beyond mere philanthropy.

Atuma promised to provide good governance to the people if given the opportunity.

He claimed that under the current LP-led administration, “the governed are blindfolded on the affairs of the state”, and promised to change the narrative.

Describing Otti’s government as “an accidental government”, Atuma promised to bring accelerated development in the state if voted for.

He promised that the  APC , if given the opportunity, would “run on transparency, good governance and human capital development when it takes over leadership in Abia State.”

Atuma is energetic and appears ready to showacase his mettle if given the opportunity especially if Emenike his ally decides to throw his weight behind him.

    Odds against him

He does not seem to have the statewide followership needed to dislodge Otti assuming he is able to pick the APC ticket.

Some also believe that his party APC does not have the appeal to win governorship election in Abia despite claims by members of the party that it means well for the people.

Another big hurdle for him is that he comes from Abia Central that has been in charge of the state affairs for close to 12 years.

  • Abia airport project: Nsulu landowners reject govt takeover of 1,025 hectares of land

Abia airport project: Nsulu landowners reject govt takeover of 1,025 hectares of land

The landowners in Nsulu, Isialangwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, host to the proposed Abia Airport, have rejected the acquisition of 1,025 hectares of land for the airport project, saying it would have catastrophic consequences on their communities, as the loss of the vast tract of land would lead to insufficient land for farming, housing, and essential needs, ultimately resulting in hunger, starvation, and potential extinction.

In an open letter to Governor Alex Otti of the state, yesterday, the landowners said: “On land mass, we strongly object to the proposed acquisition of 1,025 hectares of land for the Abia Airport, Nsulu, as it would have catastrophic consequences for our communities. The loss of this vast tract of land would lead to insufficient land for farming, housing, and essential needs, ultimately resulting in hunger, starvation, and potential extinction.
“Furthermore, the proposed land acquisition would exacerbate existing socio-economic challenges, increasing poverty, unemployment, and insecurity. Our communities would be left with reduced space for new homes, burial grounds, and community development, threatening our very way of life.

“In comparison, nearby airports such as Owerri, Ebonyi, and Enugu occupy between 250-360 hectares. In similar light, Abia State can learn from the design of Ninoy Aquino International Airport, MIAA, in Manila, Philippines, for example, which handles 48 million passengers annually and was built on 440 hectares. It has 4 terminal buildings, 7 hangar bays and a runway of 6km!

“Considering these concerns, we propose negotiating a land size of not more than 400 hectares for the airport. This compromise would balance the needs of the airport with the livelihoods and well-being of our communities.”
Further, they said: “Transparency and map coordinates. We respectfully request that the government provide us with the claim survey of the entire proposed acquisition and the coordinates and their control points. This information is crucial for us to understand the land requirements of the proposed airport design and its potential impact on our individual communities.

“The lack of transparency and the government’s forceful attempts to acquire our land have created distrust and raised concerns about the government’s intentions from the outset. We believe that providing this information is essential for building trust and ensuring that our communities are informed and engaged throughout the process.
“Representation. We take great exception to the government’s decision to appoint representatives for our host communities without our consent. This action disregards our autonomy and agency, and we strongly believe that we should be allowed to choose our own representatives to ensure our voices are heard.

“The current arrangement, where landowners are appointed to negotiate with themselves, is not only incongruous but also undermines the legitimacy of the process. Furthermore, we are dismayed that some village representatives were unknown to the landowners they claimed to represent, and the government’s inaction when brought to their attention only exacerbates our concerns about accountability and transparency.

“We urge the government to recognise our right to self-representation and decision-making, and to engage in meaningful dialogue with us to address our concerns.

“Other projects: We restate that we do not have a problem with the airport project itself, but we oppose the government’s plan to site a hotel, housing estate, and school on our land for commercial purposes. We do not believe that these projects fall under the much touted “overriding public interest” that will necessitate a forceful acquisition of our land. We have offered suggestions to your government on alternative viable options.

“Court order: We demand that the government respect the court order to stay further action on the airport project pending the hearing and determination of our suit. The government’s continued actions on the project, despite the court order, undermine the rule of law and create a perception that the state is above the law. We urge the government to uphold the principles of law and order, and to adhere to the court’s directives, just as it expects its citizens to do.”

  • Otti signs Abia electricity bill into law

Otti signs Abia electricity bill into law

UMUAHIA- Abia State Governor Alex Otti has signed into law, the Abia State Electricity Bill which empowers the State to regulate its electricity market.

Speaking while assenting to the executive bill at the Governor’s country home, Umuehim Nvosi, in Isiala Ngwa South council area, Otti explained that with the law, the government has been vested with the capacity to implement the law, stressing that the state would soon set up Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority, ASERA.

The Governor stated that the 64-page law would support the power initiatives of the government which will stand the test of time, and would also strengthen the plans of government to extend power to the remaining 8 council areas of the State which are not included under the Aba ring-fence arrangement with Geometric Power Limited covering 9 council areas.

He said; “This is a document that will stand the test of time. It is a document that will protect the investment of everyone that wants to invest in Abia. It is also a document that speaks renewable energy.

“The remaining 8 local government areas in the State that are not under the Aba ring-fence, we are working hard to bring them under the Umuahia ring-fence.

“So, this legislation would support that initiative and we are very close to signing an MoU moving forward in that direction. It also would protect prospective investors in power generation.

“In fact, our dream is that if we are able to provide all the required power for Abia, then we will be able to also wheel some power to other parts of the South East and South South regions to support them and earn some fees for doing that.

“When we started to look at the electricity bill, I think that was towards the end of 2023, given that the law had already been passed at the national level by the former President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

“It does appear that the arrangement was set up for Abia. The simple reason being that Abia State is probably the only State that has a ring fence area. I am not aware if there is any other State that has it.

“Of course, there is embedded power left, right and centre, but Aba Power was the only independent, integrated power integrated because it is from generation through transmission to distribution.

“I was engaging with Geometric Power the other time and they said with the capacity they have, they will be able to wheel power to Umuahia from the plant and maybe some other parts of the South East without necessarily incurring additional costs other than getting a turbine and putting it in place because all the other infrastructures are already in place.”

He lauded the State House of Assembly for the speedy passage of the bill and the development partners for their input.

“I want to thank the State House of Assembly for the passage of this bill that emanated from the executive, speedily but carefully.

“I think I must put it on record that Abia State is lucky to have the 8th Assembly. It is an Assembly of people, who are exposed, well educated in various fields.”

Presenting the bill to the Governor, the Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa said that Abia State is on the right path with the electricity bill.

He described the bill as a milestone achievement, stressing that it is a big business investment for the State and that the State House of Assembly understands the Governor’s vision and is committed to ensuring that he actualises his vision for the state.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, noted that the State leveraged the Electricity Act of 2023 which allows States to legislate on electricity to initiate the bill.

He disclosed that the State considered what would work specifically in Abia State before coming up with the bill, adding that the bill provides for power generation mainstreaming, protection against vandalism, distribution and regulations.

He further stated that the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority would soon be established and commended the Governor for realizing the vision of providing independent power for the State which is part of his election manifesto.

He also thanked the Speaker and the development partners for their support.

“This law is an offshoot of the Electricity Act 2023 which empowered States to form a Regulatory body to regulate and create an electricity market. This law as well will encourage local participation and local content.

“We have made provisions in the law to encourage local participation.

“May I use this medium and opportunity to thank His Excellency for the support he provided to my team and our partners to make sure that we realize this great milestone today.”

  • No approval for 3-storey buildings without elevator, Abia govt warns developers

UMUAHIA – The Abia state government has warned developers of buildings that it will no longer approve construction of three storey buildings without elevators.

It stated that all storey buildings with three floors must be fitted with elevators.

The government explained that the measure is meant to ensure that buildings under construction in the state are safe, fit and habitable to the users and owners.

Speaking during a training session for the personnel of the building control unit of the Greater Aba Development Authority, GADA, General manager of the agency, Architect Uche Ukeje, disclosed that the strict implementation of the building control measures would eliminate building collapse, ensure protection of lives and properties as well as the construction of environmental friendly buildings.

Ukeje, represented by the Head of the building control unit of GADA, Mr. Enyinnaya Romanus, warned the officials of the building control unit to ensure stage by stage monitoring and supervision of building projects to promote building standards.

He said; “Before now, there was nothing like building control in Aba. Now, the rule is that before you cast your foundation, there are certain approvals you must get. Then, you come back and we must come to site to inspect as you build to enable us know if you are following the approvals. We are going to ensure stage by stage supervision and monitoring of building projects. GADA won’t allow sharp practices.

“There are certain facilities or designs that must be fitted in some type of buildings otherwise you won’t get further approvals to build. No developer will get further approval if there are no provision for elevators in any storey buildings from three floors. We must approve your plan for drainage and waste disposal or your project will be stalled until you comply with the standard practice. The era of piping waste to drainage by developers is gone. Any developer who contravenes any standard will be arrested and prosecuted if he fails to remedy the contravene within the period allowed. We are not against any developer but to ensure that buildings are safe, fit and habitable.

“We don’t want to hear of buildings collapsing and killing people. If you lose a property, you know how many millions of money that will be involved and you also know the state of the economy. GADA has come to improve the old method of buildings without standard. We have digitalized our operations. You can ascertain the status of your project, no matter your location. And if we ask you to stop work on your project, you can easily check our platforms and find out the reason.

“We are also working with environmental health officials to arrest and prosecute those those destroying our environment. We have already carried out adequate sensitization of residents about the need to protect the environment.”

  • Why I’m still operating from my private residence – Gov Otti

Why I’m still operating from my private residence – Gov Otti

UMUAHIA- Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti , has said that delivering quality infrastructure to the people of the state is more important than where he resides and operates from, as Governor.

Otti, who disclosed this while speaking during the monthly media chat tagged, Governor Otti Speaks to Abians, insisted that his priority remains the delivery of results to the people of the state, and not where he operates from.

He explained that the delay from moving into the Government House,Umuahia, was based on careful allocation of resources and assured the people of the State that the Government House,Umuahia, would be fixed soon, not just for his administration but for future Governors.

He said; “You are worried that I am not operating from here. I don’t think you should worry about that. The important thing is that I’m operating.

“Abians want to see activities, not where the Governor is operating from. Where I live is not as important as having good roads in Aba and Umuahia and other Local Government Areas in the State.

“It is not as important as ensuring that Aba and Umuahia, particularly, are kept clean on a 24-hour, seven days basis. It is not as important as ensuring that our people have good hospitals and accessible schools to go to.

“It is not as important as ensuring that our schools are fixed. Those were the areas I declared state of emergency on. I didn’t declare emergency on Government House and where the Governor will live.

“So, what the issue is, is that this Government House is important but not as important as some of the things that I mentioned earlier.

“When I inspected both the Governor’s Lodge and the Governor’s Office, they were in terrible states of disrepair and vandalism.

“Renovating them requires significant funds, but I considered it more urgent to channel those resources into infrastructure, security, health, environment and education.

“I can assure you that in no distant time, since we are taking care of those important areas, we will come here and the Government House.

“We don’t have time. We are in a hurry. So, we have to do so many things at the same time.

“Before you know it, the four years is over and you will be wondering what happened.”

  • Abia NUP leaders dishonest — Otti

Abia NUP leaders dishonest — Otti

UMUAHIA—Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has accused the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, of dishonesty in the arrears of pensions owed them by previous administrations in the state.

Otti had accused the NUP of reneging on the agreement they allegedly signed to forfeit the arrears of pensions owed by past administrations.

However, Chairman of the NUP in Abia State,  Chukwuemeka Irondi, who admitted that the Otti administration has been update in paying monthly pensions, denied that they signed an agreement with the state government to forfeit their arrears of salaries.

He alleged that the state government invited them to a late-night meeting where an agreement was imposed on them.

The Governor had, while speaking at the weekend, described the leaders of the pensioners as dishonest people and vowed not to call them to any negotiation again.

He said,” Did you see that they signed the Memorandum of Agreement. I saw a newspaper report where they said they didn’t sign. So, you can see that we are dealing with dishonest set of leaders. The pensioners are honest people, their leaders are dishonest. And we don’t reward dishonesty.

“If you made a mistake, don’t say I didn’t sign, don’t say I was deceived to sign. You went to school, you served through. Somebody was owning them. I never owed them. They kept quiet all these whiles, some for 10 years. And somebody came out to say, I want to clear this backlog and they were excited. I have told this story several times.

“So, once you start from a dishonest point of view, I cannot deal with you. If you like, twist the question 100 times, I will not deal with you. I will not deal with them because they are very dishonest people.”

The pensioners are happy because they were paid.

“These people signed; they had walked away from everything. But I said no, it is not fair out of my own magnanimity.   But  I am not going to be discouraged because few people are dishonest.”

‘I have investigated it and found that the PDP is behind it, their lawyer is a PDP lawyer. If they are not stupid, why would they hire somebody who owed for 10 years to come and be disparaging somebody who offered to pay. Genuine pensioners are happy everywhere but contractors who feel they can make money are in it. I will not pay, will not deal with them. I have finished with them. Since they have an option, why can’t they go to court? The question to ask them is; why didn’t they go to court in the last 10 years? So, i think we have sufficiently dealt with the matter. I will not deal with it again. If somebody is not happy that he is being paid 100% pensions monthly, he should return the ones that he has been paid and continue wearing black.

“Let’s move on. Two days ago, I read a report in the newspaper where they said they never signed anything. I said yes, we are getting there. Before now, they said they were deceived. Genuine pensioners have disowned them. They want me to call them to a negotiation but i will never call them. They should return all they have collected and declare a dispute. Then,we deal with the dispute, you don’t collect money and turn back to say you don’t agree. It is dishonesty and I don’t deal with dishonest people.”

Reacting to the Governor’s statement describing the leaders of the pensioners as dishonest, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abia State Chapter, condemned it as not only reckless and insensitive, but also deeply disrespectful to senior citizens who have dedicated their productive years to serving the state and are now being deprived of their legitimate entitlements.

The party urged the Governor to apologize to the pensioners and fullfil his campaign promise of paying the arrears owed by the pensioners.

The PDP said,” We find it necessary to ask a fundamental question: Who is truly dishonest? Is it the pensioners, who are simply demanding what is rightfully theirs, or a Governor who claimed to have cleared

all outstanding pensions, a narrative aggressively pushed by his government and its agents? If indeed all pension arrears have been settled, as the Governor once boasted, why are pensioners still crying out for their payments?

“It is on record that during his election campaign, Governor Alex Otti solemnly promised to clear all outstanding pension arrears once elected. However, rather than fulfilling that promise, he has resorted to blackmailing and maligning the same pensioners who voted for him, subjecting them to a fraudulent demand to forgo or surrender their entitlements to the government.

“If this is not a blatant act of executive dishonesty, then what is?”
