Release of Nnamdi Kanu not connected to S-East security issues — Soludo

The governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has said releasing the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, from detention and insecurity in the South-East are two different issues.

Kanu has been in detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) for about 5 years since his arrest from Kenya by the Nigerian government despite calls from different quarters for his release.

Some people who are calling for the release of the IPOB leader argue that it will reduce the level of insecurity in the South-East.

But during a media chat to celebrate his third anniversary on Monday, Governor Soludo, who is among those who have been calling for Kanu’s release said: “The release of Nnamdi Kanu for me is different from the issue of security, I separate the two, I don’t link the two.

“Nnamdi Kanu for me is for us to have a conversation of a long-term future for the Igbos and that is a different conversation.

“For the criminals who are kidnappers, we have given them an olive branch, come out, we will train you, we will empower you, we will rehabilitate you, if you don’t we take you out.”

Soludo said his continued appeal for the release of the IPOB leader is to have him around so that he could be a part of a broader discussion to decide the future of the Igbo people.

However, the governor recalled that whilst he continued his appeal for Kanu’s release, “a whole lot of this Simon Ekpa and some of this his band of criminals took over and turned the things into a killing spree, just killing people with reckless abandon.”

Simon Ekpa, who claimed to have taken over as IPOB leader upon Kanu’s arrest, was  arrested in Finland where he resides in November last year by the Finnish police for what it termed  “public exhortation to an offence, committed with terrorist intent.”

Governor Soludo said that he has no idea what Ekpa is pursuing other than to “swindle people for money.”

  • Soludo banned noise pollution, not evangelism — Mefor

Soludo banned noise pollution, not evangelism — Mefor

The Anambra State Government has dismissed the story making the rounds that the Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, banned public preaching in the state.

The state Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, in a press release to address the misconstrued reports surrounding the governor’s recent encounter with an itinerant preacher at Onitsha Market, said that Soludo only banned noise pollution.

The statement read in part, “The Governor’s remarks were misinterpreted as a ban on evangelism, whereas his focus was on noise pollution, which has been banned by an extant law on public health.

“To clarify, Governor Soludo drew attention to the Public Health Law 2006, which prohibits noise pollution and preaching in inappropriate places like markets using loudspeakers. The governor advised preachers to conduct their activities in churches or designated areas where people can gather and listen to the word without disrupting others’ activities.

“The issue at hand is noise pollution, not evangelism. “Noise pollution” is punishable under *Sections 8(1,4b) and 9(1,2) of the Public Health Laws of Anambra State, 2006.

“As a matter of precedence, a magistrate court in Nnewi made this law actionable against a church in 2019.” He advised the public to disregard any claims suggesting Governor Soludo has banned evangelism or public preaching in Anambra State but rather urged citizens to adhere to the Public Health Law and respect the rights of others.

Anambra guber: Ex-Ohanaeze President scores Soludo 80%, endorses him for 2nd term

The immediate past president of the Igbo apex ruling body, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Anambra State, Chief Obi Udodeme, has scored Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s performance at 80 percent and endorsed his second tenure bid.

He reiterated “You cannot change a winning team, the present governor is not doing bad at all, he is performing.  If I am asked to score him, I would score him 80 percent or above because no man is perfect.  He has done so well on roads, though if I want to be sincere to myself I would tell you he has developed all sectors of the economy simultaneously.”

Chief Udodeme made this disclosure during the meeting of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, executives, and stakeholders of Fegge Ward 1 at Agulu town hall, Fegge Onitsha, while the registration of new APGA members was also going on.

“You don’t have the right to stop others from contesting, all I know is that this government has done excellently well, I would vote for him again and again and again,” he vowed.

While applauding his ward executives and the local government political appointees in their ward, Udodeme declared that in all the 17 wards of Onitsha South Local Government,” This is the very first-time political appointees came together, mobilized funds and made the announcement in the whole of the ward, calling people to come and register for APGA and a lot of people came out.

Focus on rail network to connect capitals, Soludo tells S’East commission

The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo has urged the South East Development Commission to concentrate on one agenda or project at a time to achieve meaningful impact.

Soludo made the call when he received the newly appointed members of SEDC, led by the Chief Executive Officer, Dr Emeka Nworgu, at the governor’s lodge in Awka on Friday.

He urged the commission to focus on its initiatives in the next five years, emphasising the importance of effective delivery mechanisms to provide value to the people.

“We should not waste this opportunity of having this commission. Adopt a one-point agenda, such as the south east rail network to connect all the state capitals, deliver it, and go to the second-point agenda.

“If you open a floodgate that you want to achieve over 50 important matters, where you sprinkle on all the matters and in five years, some projects will be abandoned; and you will ask yourself, what did you achieve?

“So, let us write that report card today and say, five years coming we are able to tell the people of south east that we unlocked this (not two) opportunity and this is the impact.

“And then, you take up the second agenda. That way the SEDC will be different from the rest,” he said.

Soludo also urged the commission to collaborate with South-East governors to achieve significant progress.

Earlier, Nworgu, the chief executive officer and Chairman of the SEDC Board of Directors, commended Soludo for his significant achievements in health education and infrastructure sectors.

Also speaking, the Managing Director, SEDC, Mr Mark Okoye, said the commission remained committed to establishing the southeast region as a leading investment hub to foster sustainable development and economic growth.

“We look forward to a fruitful partnership for the benefit of Anambra and the entire southeast region,” Okoye said.

  • Anambra 2025: Students give Soludo 30-day ultimatum to declare interest

Anambra 2025: Students give Soludo 30-day ultimatum to declare interest

Awka – Students from various tertiary institutions in Anambra State have issued a 30-day ultimatum to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, demanding that he publicly declare his interest in seeking re-election in the November 8 governorship election.

Addressing a press conference in Awka, Okoye Matthew Okpala, Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council in Anambra and convener of Solution Students of Nigeria, emphasized that while the governor’s actions suggest he is interested in a second term, the students want an official announcement without delay.

According to Okpala, Students’ Union Government (SUG) presidents from all tertiary institutions in Anambra unanimously agreed on the ultimatum, stating they will mobilize a mass protest in the state capital if Soludo does not respond within 30 days.

“We, the students, previously demanded at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University that Governor Soludo declare his intention to contest for re-election. We sent the message, but we have not heard from him,” Okpala said.

Instead of making a formal declaration, Okpala noted, Soludo has remained focused on governance, building roads, offering free education and antenatal services, empowering youths through skill acquisition programs, and upgrading infrastructure across the state.

“He is not even talking about a second term, and that is why we are giving him 30 days to declare his interest. If he fails to do so, all Anambra students will protest in Awka and shut down the state capital.”

In an unprecedented move, Okpala revealed that students plan to contribute money to purchase Soludo’s nomination form as a demonstration of their support.

“We have agreed to contribute between N500 and N1,000 each. With over 146,000 students participating, we will raise over N100 million, which is enough to cover the cost of his nomination form.”

Describing Soludo as the best governor Anambra has ever had, Okpala highlighted key achievements of his administration, including:

Over 500 kilometers of roads constructed in three years

Employment of 5,000 quality teachers and 2,500 medical staff

Construction of five brand-new General Hospitals

Provision of free Wi-Fi for students in tertiary institutions

    Approval of student loans

Launch of Agunechemba Security Outfit, which has significantly reduced crime in the state

“Governor Soludo has transformed Anambra in ways we never imagined. We cannot afford to lose him because we may never see a leader like him again,” Okpala stated.

With the 30-day countdown now ticking, all eyes are on Governor Soludo to see whether he will heed the students’ call and declare his bid for re-election in 2025.

  • Insecurity: Adopt Soludo’s approach to retrieve region from criminals, S-East indigenes task govs

Insecurity: Adopt Soludo’s approach to retrieve region from criminals, S-East indigenes task govs

ENUGU—THE South-East region has for close to four years been under the siege of criminal elements who held the five states in the region hostage.

They hid under different nomenclatures- unknown gunmen, autopilot, IPoB, ESN, to commit heinous crimes. They killed thousands of people, destroyed properties worth billions of naira, declared illegal sit-at-home, and violently enforced them; thousands were kidnapped, and ransom that ran into billions of naira was extorted from them.

These criminals were completely in charge. In the rural communities, they constituted the authority, giving orders and instructions that were obeyed by the helpless members of the communities. They controlled the rural and semi-urban communities while the elected legal authorities managed to control the cities and oftentimes they strolled into the cities to cause havoc and escape. Life was hell, brutish, and unbearable for the people of the region.

However, respite came to the people of Enugu and Abia states when they had new administrations in May 2023. The new governments took drastic measures to restore some level of sanity, but it was not yet Uhuru. With the actions of the governors of Abia and Enugu, the hoodlums relocated to Imo, Anambra, and Ebonyi states, with Imo and Anambra as the hotbed. The boundary communities of Anambra and Imo were completely taken over by the criminals and the residents fled their homes.

The hopeless situation, particularly in Anambra, lingered until last month when Governor Soludo rose to his almost abandoned responsibility and took the criminal elements head-on. He launched a security operation named Udo ga achi (peace must reign) and a security outfit, Agunechemba (the lion that guards the people) to bring the much-needed peace. He signed the Homeland Security Law 2025 on January 18, 2025. The key components of the law are the establishment of Agunechemba security outfit, to assist and complement federal security forces; the deployment of technology, including tracking systems, command-and-control systems, and AI-powered surveillance cameras, the establishment of a State Call Centre with toll-free lines, among encouraging incentives.

Before the launch of the security outfit, the state was drifting towards an ungovernable space with frequent kidnapping incidents and increasing activities of fake native doctors, who have converted virtually all streams in the state as centers of fetish worship where they lured gullible people, with promises of instant wealth and travelling to foreign countries with ease.

It has become a common sight to see nude men and women carrying goats on their shoulders in the streams, with voices in the background, telling them to name what they wish for themselves.

It was gathered that these people usually pay large sums of money to the native doctors, who usually entice them by listing the names and the number of people that had become rich through them. Worried by these ugly developments, the state government decided that enough was enough.

So, soon after the launch of the new security outfit, things began to happen in various parts of the state. With information about Agunechemba spreading across the state, the crime rate appears to have drastically reduced.

The frequent cult activities in Awka have reduced considerably. Kidnappings are no longer a daily affair. And with the operatives descending on the native doctors and questionable pastors, the state is becoming calm.

In the words of the Director of Operations for Agunechemba Security Outfit, Chinenye Ihenko: “The activities of fake native doctors and pastors are promoting a get-rich-quick syndrome mentality in the state. The mandate we have is to sanitize the state and we are on course. Anything contributing in one way or the other towards the desecration of the state and aiding criminal activities will surely give way; that we can assure Anambra people.” Indeed in their short period of operation, appreciable success has been recorded even though few human errors have been recorded too.

Soludo laments the level of moral decadence among youths

“We are so shocked by the way the youths of these days are taking humans. Many people had in the past been kidnapped and ransom paid and they were released. But the youths of this day kidnap and kill their victims even when they have collected ransom. We must condemn what they are doing and it must stop, we will not allow them to continue their wickedness.

“Some people are condemning the  Agunechemba security outfit we set up, and even calling me names but we don’t care about what they are saying. Anambra must be secured; it must be the most secure state in Nigeria. The people condemning Agunechemba security are the people who celebrate those working with kidnappers and armed robbers who terrorize us.

“We are not against traditional worship because there is freedom of religion in our constitution, but if you are preparing charms and doing other fetish things to protect kidnappers and armed robbers, we will never allow you to operate here. The kidnappers have crossed the line and we are after them now.”

Soludo’s approach is good, but no innocent person should be victimised — Ahamba

Chief Mike Ahamba, SAN, welcomed the Anambra approach to tackling insecurity but cautioned that no innocent person should suffer victimization. Chief Ahamba insisted that government and security agencies should not swoop on anyone when there is an iota of doubt about involvement in crime. He noted that laws against kidnapping have always been there, adding that the difference is the will for implementation, as the Soludo administration is doing. Ahamba wondered how a place that is predominantly Christian has turned so fetish.

“Laws against kidnapping and other crimes have always been there. Maybe, the difference is that Soludo is all out for its implementation. They should make sure that there is no iota of doubt before going for anybody.”

No place in Abia for criminals fleeing from Anambra —Govt

While Abia State is not thinking of adopting the Anambra approach, they said they are ever on alert over the possibility of fleeing criminals entering Abia. The Security Adviser to Governor Alex Otti, Commander MacDonald Ubah (retd.) declared that “Abia has no haven” for such unscrupulous elements.

Commander Ubah told SEV that Abia has put in place top-notch security measures to ensure that the fleeing criminals do not settle on Abia soil. According to him, the state is leaving nothing to chance. He said Abia State is closely monitoring developments in Anambra and would fish out any criminal trying to hide in Abia. He said covert security operations are going on “which are not for public consumption”, aimed at smoking out criminal elements who attempt to hide in any part of Abia.

“There is no haven for the fleeing criminals in Abia. We know where they are going, and we will follow them there to fish them out”, he vowed.

Ubah noted that the efforts of the Abia State Government to flush out criminals, especially around the Umunneochi axis that shares borders with Anambra State had paid off.

    Former lawmaker lauds Soludo’s approach

A former Abia lawmaker who represented Umunneochi State Constituency, Hon. Ikedi Ezekwesiri, agreed that security has improved in Abia but advised that vigilance be maintained to ensure that criminals pursued in neighbouring Anambra do not find their way to Abia.

Ezekwesiri, who was a victim of an attack by the criminals in the Umunneochi axis, said that the Abia State Government must not necessarily adopt the Anambra approach “as there are so many ways to kill a rat.

“Much as I don’t condemn entirely what is happening in Anambra State, I also know that we are to be more civil here. Yes, there is a high probability that some of those criminals from Anambra can enter Abia and some other neighbouring states, so it calls for vigilance on the part of natives. When you see somebody who is not familiar with the environment, report immediately to the nearest security post. If you see anybody you don’t understand his movement, accost him and if his answer is not satisfactory, don’t waste time, report immediately. People should be alert.”

Imo, other states should adopt Anambra approach to provide security —Nwadike

A former presidential candidate, Batos Nwadike, urged the Imo State Government and other states in the region to look at the legal backing that Anambra State Government adopted to fight insecurity.

Nwadike, who contested in 2011 under the platform of the Peoples Mandate Party, PMP, said the Anambra security law is addressing the root cause of insecurity. “This is good because Soludo and Anambra State House of Assembly have tried to make a far-reaching law to curb the tap root of insecurity in our land, which is the craze to get-rich- quik without effort.

“However, Imo and other states can move the frontier further by making such laws more exhaustive. When I was running as president in 2011, one of my major planks in curbing insecurity in our country was to give legal backing as Anambra has done to the sanctions on the root causes of the malaise.

“So now we can move further by making the law more exhaustive. With that, insecurity, which has become an ATM to the perpetrators, will drastically reduce,” Nwadike said.

Life is gradually returning to deserted Imo communities

Although the Imo State Government has named what it is doing to ensure that the fleeing criminals from Anambra do not flock to the state, security agencies in the state have assured that no criminal would have peace in the state and are encouraging people who fled their communities, particularly in Orsu Council, to return assuring that their communities are now safe. They met and interacted with stakeholders of the communities and encouraged them to return home and resume their normal lives.

The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, Aboki Danjuma, was accompanied by the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Engr. Friday Ibekaeme, the Honourable Member representing Orsu at the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Agabige and his management team. They visited key areas including Eke Ututu Market, Ihiteukwa, Okwu Amaraihe, Awo-Idemili, Ihitenansa, and Amaruru, reassuring locals, including youth leaders, and community stakeholders that a secure environment awaits their homecoming.

We are on alert, to checkmate criminals running into Ebonyi —Police

The Ebonyi State Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Joshua Ukandu said that the command is using its discreet intelligence to check criminals running from Anambra State into the state and urged the members of the public to always volunteer information to help the police to combat crime in the state.

According to him: “We have detailed our discreet intelligence to monitor their activities. It is not something we can do alone because some of these criminals moved into the villages to hide and operate from there. So, we need information from the villagers to nail them.

“We are aware of what is happening in other places and we have detailed our intelligence and crack team police to gather necessary information to get at the criminals when they sneak into the communities and the state.”

  • Anambra is a Christian state: Odinani practitioners fire back at Soludo

Anambra is a Christian state: Odinani practitioners fire back at Soludo

Indigenous Spirituality Practitioners in Anambra State (Ndi Odinani) have criticized Governor Chukwuma Soludo over his recent statement referring to them as idol worshippers.

They described the governor’s remarks as a cultural misstep and a fallacious generalization.

The group argued that the statement unfairly portrayed the entire community of indigenous spirituality practitioners as criminals. While they supported efforts to combat criminality under any guise, they condemned singling out one belief system without applying the same scrutiny to others as an act of prejudice and injustice.

In an open letter to Governor Soludo, shared with newsmen via WhatsApp, the group emphasized the need for equity and justice. The letter, signed by Izuorah Nnamdi, Director of Lomat Global Resources Limited, was titled:

“Open Letter to His Excellency, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo (CFR), Governor of Anambra State, on Upholding the Constitutional Rights of Indigenous Spirituality Practitioners in Anambra State.”

The letter reads in part: “Your assertion that Anambra is a ‘Christian state’ demands careful reconsideration. Such a declaration is historically, culturally, and constitutionally erroneous. Christianity, as an organized religion, was introduced to our land by missionaries in 1857, a mere 168 years ago during the colonial era. Before this period, our ancestors thrived under a robust indigenous belief system — Odinani — which shaped their worldview, governance, and ethical structure.”

The letter further argued: “Anambra belongs, first and foremost, to its indigenous people, whose identity, spirituality, and customs are rooted in ancestral heritage. While Christianity is now widespread due to historical and colonial influences, it is an adopted faith, not the indigenous spirituality of the land. Designating Anambra as a ‘Christian state’ erases the legitimate cultural identity and spiritual sovereignty of its people.”

The group also pointed out that the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria guarantees freedom of religion and prohibits the elevation of one religion above others. Section 38 of the Constitution guarantees the right to thought, conscience, and religion, including the freedom to practice and propagate one’s beliefs.

They called on the governor to ensure inclusivity and neutrality in his leadership, stating: “Your role as governor, entrusted with upholding the constitution, necessitates a stance of neutrality and inclusivity, ensuring that adherents of Odinani, Christianity, Islam, and other faiths are equally respected and protected under the law.”

The practitioners also addressed the issue of traditional sacrifices at road junctions and water bodies, which the governor had criticized. They explained that such practices are deeply rooted in Igbo cosmology and serve specific spiritual and communal purposes. They proposed constructive dialogue with traditional custodians to find a harmonious approach, such as designating areas for cultural observances without compromising public order.

Concluding the letter, the group urged Governor Soludo to embrace inclusivity: “The strength of any democracy lies in its commitment to justice, fairness, and respect for diversity. You are a beacon of intellectual leadership and innovation. We urge you to rise above religious bias, embrace your role as a father to all Ndi Anambra, and lead with a renewed commitment to cultural inclusivity and constitutional fidelity.”
