FCT emergency department places search, rescue team on alert

The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has placed its search and rescue team on high alert following expected rains in FCT and neighbouring states.

The acting Director-General (D-G) of FEMD, Mr Abdulrahman Mohammed, disclosed this on Friday in a statement signed by the department’s Head of Public Affairs in Abuja.

Mohammed said that the move was to avert avoidable loss of lives and properties, following the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET)’s early warning.

He said that NIMET had revealed that thunderstorms were being experienced in some parts of Benue, Plateau and Nasarawa states.

He added that the weather alert issued by NiMET, which was expected to last up to May 3, also claimed that FCT and its neighbouring states might experience thunderstorms in the coming days.

“According to the forecast, strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur.

“Other states that may be affected according to the weather forecast include Edo, Imo, Abia and Anambra states,” he said.

The acting D-G urged FCT residents to avoid driving under heavy rains, adding that people should equally stay away from trees to avoid the impact of falling branches.

He further advised that all electrical appliances should be disconnected, especially when it is raining.

Mohair reiterated the department’s commitment to the protection of life and property.

He appealed to residents to always use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of an emergency.

  • ‘Truth or Dare’ game: FCT residents raise concern

‘Truth or Dare’ game: FCT residents raise concern

Concerned Nigerians in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have expressed displeasure over the moral and cultural decline associated with the trendy  ‘Truth or Dare’ game, particularly among young people.

The residents spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interview on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to them, although ‘Truth or Dare’ has been an age-long staple game for social interaction, among peers and relatives, it has seen an unwholesome resurgence among young people in recent times.

NAN reports that ‘Truth or Dare’ is a game played at social gatherings, where players choose to either answer a question truthfully or complete a daring challenge.

The game thrived among people of close social circles, where peer pressure, compromise and friendly competition heighten the fun.

Before now, most people preferred to play such a daring game with only relatives and those they had known for a long time, and were comfortable with.

Perhaps, this was due to the fact that secrets could be revealed during those games, and there was also the possibility that the game could get heated up.

Recently, the game has taken an unusual dimension in Nigeria, particularly among young people, under the guise of ‘catching cruise’ and unbridled desire for entertainment.

The once harmless game has now evolved into an instrument that activates decadence among peers, with dares now leading to situations where individuals feel pressured or forced into actions they wouldn’t otherwise choose.

In some reported cases, the game has been linked to situations where individuals have engaged in sexual and other immoral acts they later regretted, often influenced by alcohol or other substances.

The FCT residents expressed concerns that if the lewdness associated with ‘Truth or Dare’ game was not checked, it has the potential of normalising risky or inappropriate behavours that society hitherto  frowns at.

They cited instances where the game was used to coerce or manipulate people into immoral acts, including a recent incidence involving Nigerian celebrity couple.

According them, a comedian and skit in an interview detailed how his wife allegedly participated in a “Truth or Dare” game with another actor, leading to a sexual encounter.

A corps member, who simply  identify herself as Jane, narrated how she got entangled in the ‘truth or dare’ game that made her engaged in an amorous act.

According to her, she was in the university when she first played the game at a course mate’s birthday party, as someone said the party was getting bored and should be made interesting.

“Before then, I had never heard of the game but others were very interested and excited to play it,so I decided to play along, not to feel left out.

“The rules were that anyone that would not tell the “truth” or carry out a “dare” would have to drink some quantity of alcohol.

“When it got to my turn, I was told to kiss a guy, but I refused, and I was punished  to drink some alcohol, which I did and began to feel tipsy.

“As the game continued, another guy was asked to kiss me and caress my breasts in the presence of everyone, and I initially refused but others pressured me to do it.

“I eventually allowed him to do it, but after the party, I started feeling guilty”, she said.

Jane noted that if it was in the social media age, pictures and videos from the act would have  flooded the internet , which would hunt her for life.

She added that “something has to be done because our youths are doing crazy things under the influence of alcohol in the name of Truth or Dare.”

An upcoming singer, Martins J, lamented that if nothing was done to check the spate of acceptance of the game, it would end up making unsuspecting youths get heavily addicted to alcohol.

“I know of one babe that was asked to have a quickie in the toilet with a guy after she has taken  alcohol very well because of the ‘Truth or Dare’, and she did it.

“ As the thing is going now, everybody is enjoying it as  fun and cruise so there is no shame again, so I think people have to speak against it openly”, he said.

However, for Judith John, the game is for the ‘wild and daring’ and not for everyone.

“I think that 99 percent of individuals that are participating in ‘Truth or Dare’ already have an idea in their head to use it as a means to carry out immoral acts.

“This game is played at parties and clubs and all of that, so for me, I feel most of the time, people who play the game already know what they are going to carry out with it.

“Nobody can actually force you against what you have no premeditation to do”, she said.

Mrs Mabel  Adebayo, a school teacher and  mother of two, said  everything  about a game that influences or forces people to do things out of their will was inhuman.

She therefore advised parents and guardians to protect their wards against it, adding that the game was evil and has the potential of hardening a child’s conscience.

“You dare not mention that game in my house and at the school where I teach, because they have used it to turn innocent children into monsters”, she said.

Some Clerics who spoke with NAN said it was both morally and spiritually wrong to get people do what they would not have done with their clear eyes and senses.

Pastor Emmanuel Udeh said: “Truth or Dare game is a devilish game and no one with the fear of God should be involved, as it only brings moral compromise.

“If you look at it carefully, it is those vices such as drinking and other debauchery tendencies that brings the so called fun in the game.

“I think we all should speak against any activity, including a game, that can bring moral and spiritually decay to our society”, he said.

Mallam Shaibu Ibrahim , a Muslim, said: Anything at all that will lead you into temptation is forbidden in Islam.

“For instance, if I have friends that drink, and I have an intention of following them to the beer parlor without even wanting to drink is already a sin.

“Honestly in my opinion, this is not game but a device from the devil to destroy the youths, this game must not be encouraged at all because it causes more harm than good.”(

According to him, over 30 persons suffered various degrees of burns.

A statement by the presidential spokesman, Mr Bayo Onanuga, explained that Tinubu ordered priority treatment of the injured in various medical facilities in the capital city.

It further said: “The President directed security agencies, particularly those concerned with road safety, to pay closer attention to traffic around the capital city’s entry and exit points.”

President Tinubu prayed for the souls of the departed and the grace of the Almighty God to comfort families that have lost their loved ones.

    First Lady mourns victims

The First Lady, in a statement, yesterday, said: “I am deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident of the tanker explosion which occurred on March 19, 2025, by the Karu Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Highway which led to the loss of many lives and property.

“I commiserate with the Minister of the FCT, Nyesome Wike, the families of the deceased and injured, the residents, affected business and property owners and the people of Abuja.

“I urge owners and drivers of vehicles, especially articulated vehicles, to ensure the road worthiness and good condition of their vehicles before putting them on the road to avert a reoccurrence of such incidences.

“I pray Almighty God grants the souls of the departed eternal rest and their family and friends the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. To the injured, I wish them speedy recovery.”

PDP mourns the dead, blames APC

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Debo Ologunagba, in a statement in Abuja, said current administration has continued to demonstrate utter disdain for the safety and wellbeing of Nigerians.
Ologunagba argued that, “This avoidable heartrending incident in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital sadly points to the general poor management of urban infrastructure and heightened insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory under the current APC government.

“Our party is saddened that due to the misgovernance of the APC administration, innocent Nigerians continue to perish with families in peril, anguish and devastation over the death of their breadwinners and loved one.

“The PDP calls on the Federal Government to institute a system-wide investigation into the Abuja explosion and similar incidences in other parts of the country and take urgent steps to ensure safer roads in our nation.

“Our party prays to God to grant speedy recovery to the injured and divine comfort to the families of the deceased.”

    Residents tell scary tales

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses and residents, who spoke with our correspondent recounted harrowing experiences of people trapped in their vehicles as raging flames engulfed them.

An eyewitness, a vulcanizer who has his tools mounted on the road side for fast services, narrated a case of a child screaming as flames took over the vehicle until the child’s voice was no longer heard.

A night of horror —Returning civil servants laments

Tears, wails, and the acrid smell of burnt metal and flesh filled the air as residents and onlookers watched helplessly.

The explosion, which occurred about 6p.m., reportedly started when a fully loaded fuel tanker lost control and crashed into several vehicles during a traffic jam, sparking a fire that quickly escalated.

“It was like a scene from hell. People were screaming, banging on their car windows, begging for help, but no one could do anything. The fire was too intense,” said Mrs. Aisha Ibrahim.

Another witness, Mr. John Eze, recounted the horrifying last moments of some victims, saying: “I saw a man trying to break his windshield to escape, but the fire caught up with him. He was burnt right before our eyes. God have mercy.”

A proprietor, Pastor Ukanwa Reminjus whose house is a stone throw away from the accident scene, said: “This accident was too much for one night. It was very bad. I wasn’t at the scene. I was on my home. And each explosion that happened, shook the walls of my building. The total explosion was more than 10 and each explosion had a deeper impact like that of the bomb blast we experienced in 2014.”

‘No emergency rescue; Nigeria’s a failed state’

Amidst the chaos, many residents lamented the absence of emergency responders.
According to witnesses, neither firefighters nor medical teams arrived in time to rescue those trapped.
“For over 45 minutes, there was no single fire truck. We had to use buckets of sand and water in vain. This country has failed us. People died because there was no proper response.

“When emergency responders finally arrived, many felt it was too little, too late,” said Yusuf Abubakar, a commercial driver who narrowly escaped the blaze.

“By the time they came, all that was left were charred remains. How can a country be like this? Where is our government?” cried Joy Okonkwo, who lost a friend in the fire.

    Demand for justice

Some residents called for justice and better safety measures for tanker drivers.

“This is not the first time we are witnessing such an incident in Nigeria.

“These reckless tanker drivers must be regulated, and our roads must be safer,” a trader Chief Emeka Nwosu.
Another resident, James Nwachukwu, complained about the reckless driving of some truck drivers, saying: “I don’t think the government is doing a good job in taming some of these truck drivers. These guys are not human beings. Many of them know that their brake is not good and may not function well when on speech, yet, they will be moving as if there are no humans on the road. The government must wake up and address this issue if not, we should be ready to see more of this around us.”

Another resident, Janet Albert said: “I was there live and I can tell you that many people died. I saw on the TV that it was just six people that died, that’s a lie. Many people died. Many cars got exploded and destroyed and many of those cars had people in them. Many of them were trapped.”

FCT Police confirm death of several people, damages

The Police, yesterday, confirmed that six people were killed and 15 vehicles impacted by the inferno.
The statement by FCT Police Command, Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh said: “A distress call was received by Karu Division reporting a horrifying scene, a trailer, heavily loaded with cement and approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA, had lost control and crashed into stationary vehicles trapped in traffic.

“Emergency responders rushed to the scene, battling thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped.
“Six victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital, but tragically, they were confirmed dead by medical personnel on duty.

“Their remains have been deposited at Karu General Hospital Morgue.

“Police operatives, in collaboration with fire service personnel, other security agencies, and courageous individuals at the scene, contained the inferno, and normal traffic flow has been restored.

“The FCT Police Command extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and assures the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the cause of this disaster and prevent future occurrences.”

  • 50,000 Target: FirstBank, NCF Take Tree Planting To FCT In CRS Week

50,000 Target: FirstBank, NCF Take Tree Planting To FCT In CRS Week

FirstBank, in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), has launched a major tree-planting initiative to enhance Nigeria’s vegetation cover.

According to the bank, the tree planting exercise led by the Group Executive, Commercial Banking, North of FirstBank, Aishatu Bubaram, is part of its 2024 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability (CRS) Week.

The bank stated that the tree-planting event at Government Secondary School (GSS), Karshi, Abuja, which involves planting 50,000 trees, is part of a broader goal to combat climate change by reducing carbon emissions and preserving the environment.

Bubaram restated the bank’s commitment to planting 50,000 trees nationwide at the event, saying: “The essence of planting these trees is environmental conservation. These are economic trees that we believe will outlive our generation and benefit future generations.

“FirstBank’s goal, initiated during our Corporate Sustainability Week in 2023, is to plant 50,000 trees by 2024. We are well on our way to achieving this, with 30,000 trees planted this year.”

Speaking further, she noted: “Trees play an indispensable role in our environment. They purify the air we breathe, stabilise the climate, prevent soil erosion, and provide habitats and food for diverse species, including humans. In a world increasingly threatened by climate change, planting trees is one of the most effective ways to restore balance to our ecosystems.

“By planting trees in Abuja, we are actively contributing to the health and well-being of the city. Each tree planted is a step towards reducing carbon emissions, improving air quality, and enhancing the natural beauty of our urban landscape.”

Bubaram encouraged other financial institutions and individuals to contribute to a greener Nigeria, stressing that the impact extends beyond the nation and benefits the global environment.

Also, the Zonal Coordinator of NCF, Muhammad Garba Beyo, pledged the Foundation’s commitment to the initiative, aligning with its biodiversity conservation and sustainable development mission.

“The NCF, founded 42 years ago, focuses on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Our Green Recovery initiative is designed to improve Nigeria’s vegetation cover, which currently stands at less than 3 percent-a critical issue given the environmental challenges we face,” he said.

Beyo noted that the choice of GSS Karshi as the planting site was strategic, considering the school’s available space and the ageing trees on the premises.

Vice Principal (Administration) at GSS Karshi, Tanko Madugu Wando, was also present at the event.
