300 PDP, NNPP members dump parties, join APC in Kaduna

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, over 300 members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kawo Ward, Kaduna North Local Government Area, have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Receiving the new members, a Permanent Member of the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Jamilu Haruna, described the mass defection as a clear endorsement of Governor Uba Sani’s performance.

According to Dr. Haruna, who facilitated the reception ceremony, Governor Sani has, within two years in office, delivered impactful governance—ranging from infrastructural development to agricultural reform and rural transformation.

“This defection is not surprising. Even members of the opposition acknowledge Governor Uba Sani’s giant strides in security, education, food security, and citizens’ welfare,” he said.

“These achievements have set him apart from his peers and strengthened his relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This puts Kaduna in a strategic position to benefit further from the Federal Government.”

He assured the defectors of their full integration into the APC and thanked the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Alhaji Sani Liman Kila, for his support in organizing the event.

Also speaking at the event, the APC Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government, Alhaji Suleiman Wada Usman, welcomed the decampees on behalf of Governor Uba Sani.

He commended them “for embracing the truth and joining the party that is genuinely committed to Kaduna State’s development.”

“You will be treated fairly and equally in our party. No one will be considered a second-class member,” he assured.

Leader of the decampees, Professor Usman Muhammad—a former PDP senatorial aspirant for Kaduna Central—said he led 225 members from the PDP because they believe in Governor Sani’s inclusive style of governance. He criticized the PDP for sidelining experienced members like himself despite their qualifications and service.

Professor Muhammad, a political scientist and expert in international relations, expressed hope that the APC would value their contributions and called on the governor to deliver more developmental projects to Kawo.

    Prominent among the defectors were:

Barr. Aliyu Suleiman, former PDP State Legal Adviser aspirant

Alhaji Hamza Mati Salihu, Chairman, PDP Kawo Ward

Hon. Idris Badamasi Shuaibu, former PDP House of Assembly aspirant

Tasiu Aliyu, PDP Youth Leader, Kawo Ward

Comrade Aminu Tanko Musa, Chairman, NNPP Kawo Ward

APC Reps aspirant survives alleged assassination attempt in Abuja

ABUJA – Hon. Ibraheem Bolarinwa Oyekunle, a 2023 House of Representatives aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), representing the Irewole/Isokan/Ayedaade Federal Constituency of Osun State, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Friday, 4 April 2025.

The incident took place at Gwosa Market, along Airport Road in Abuja, where armed assailants ambushed the politician and fired directly at his head in what appears to have been a premeditated attack.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Oyekunle recounted the harrowing experience and called for an immediate investigation by the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies.

The politician, who sustained injuries during the attack, stressed that the attackers made no demand for valuables, instead insisting that he ‘surrender himself’ a detail which, he said, rules out robbery as a motive.

The statement reads: “That evening, I was driving home from the airport towards Lugbe and stopped at Gwosa Market to buy fruits and farm produce from local traders.

“While shopping, I noticed an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla parked across the road with its number plates concealed using plastic. This struck me as suspicious. A group of men stepped out—some remained by the vehicle, while one walked towards me. He passed very close by, but I initially assumed they might be targeting the traders, not me.

“After completing my purchases, I began walking back to my car when I suddenly heard someone shout: ‘Surrender yourself!’ I turned to see four men pointing guns at me. Ahead of me, another man—part of the same group—was also aiming a gun directly at my head.

“Acting on instinct, I charged at the man in front and knocked him down. This seemed to catch the others off guard, and they immediately started shooting. Every shot was aimed at my head, which confirms to me that this was no random act—it was a calculated attempt to kill.

“I managed to escape by running in the same direction as the traders who were also fleeing. Once the assailants saw I had slipped out of their grasp, they returned to their car and sped off.

“During the chaos, I was injured—a bullet grazed my head, and I sustained wounds to my leg. I was initially treated at Sauka Divine Hospital, where doctors stitched the head wound and tended to my leg injuries. Later, I was transferred to the Nigerian Air Force Hospital (NAF Base), Abuja, for further care and have since been discharged.

“What troubles me most is that the attackers never asked for money, my vehicle, or any possessions. Their only demand was for me to ‘surrender myself’. This strongly suggests the motive was not robbery, but something far more sinister.

“I call on the Inspector-General of Police and all relevant security agencies to launch a thorough investigation. The perpetrators must be brought to justice, and the reason behind this attack must be uncovered. This incident raises serious concerns—not just for my safety, but for the safety of all citizens.

“I thank God for His protection that night. Though the experience has shaken me, it will not deter me from continuing to serve the people of Irewole/Isokan/Ayedaade. I remain committed to our shared goals. This incident underscores the urgent need for improved security across our nation.

“I’m deeply grateful to the medical teams at Sauka Divine Hospital and the Nigerian Air Force Hospital for their swift and expert care. I also appreciate the traders and bystanders who offered their help in those critical moments.

“To my constituents and supporters, I want you to know that I am recovering well and remain determined to work tirelessly on your behalf. Let this be a reminder to us all of the importance of unity in confronting violence and insecurity.”

Ganduje leads APC NWC to Buhari hours after Atiku, El-Rufai’s visit

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna State on Friday.

The visit came just hours after a notable delegation of opposition leaders, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also met with Buhari. That group included former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former Minister of Communications Isa Pantami.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, El-Rufai insisted the meeting had no political undertones, advising “adversaries” not to lose sleep over it.

The APC leadership has not disclosed the details of their discussions with Buhari. However, the visit follows closely on the heels of a similar one by a delegation of APC governors led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who delivered Sallah greetings and congratulated Buhari on the successful conclusion of Ramadan.

Amid these back-to-back engagements, concerns have been rising over the potential defection of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) faction from the APC. The CPC, one of the four parties that merged in 2013 to form the APC, counts Buhari among its key founding members.

Despite the swirling speculation, Buhari has reiterated his loyalty to the ruling party, stating that he has no intention of leaving the APC.

  • Tinubu’s achievements undeniable, APC replies Peter Obi

Tinubu’s achievements undeniable, APC replies Peter Obi

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s government has recorded undeniable accomplishments, making opposition approval irrelevant.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s assertions of superior leadership, labeling them as “overdramatic.”

During an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Tuesday, Obi criticised

Tinubu’s economic reforms, claiming he could have executed them more efficiently. He also blamed the Labour Party’s internal discord on the Tinubu administration.

In response, Morka underscored the administration’s achievements, such as settling a $7 billion foreign exchange backlog and addressing over $30 billion in Ways and Means liabilities.

He further highlighted the reduction of the debt service ratio from 98% to roughly 64% and the rise in oil production to over 1.8 million barrels per day—exceeding OPEC’s 1.5 million barrels per day benchmark for the first time in years.

“To be honest, it was painful to watch Mr. Obi as he laboured in vain to cobble together any sensible critical economic argument in the face of the stark and undeniable record of progress of the administration’s economic reforms,” Morka stated.

“Even Mr. Obi’s trademark opportunistic sensationalisation of transient difficulties that Nigerians have endured in patriotic support of the President’s bold and transformative economic plan availed no respite, as he floundered on national television, framing himself as a portrait of frustration and political desperation,” he added.

“Mr. Obi’s favourite retort, ‘I would have done better as president,’ must be a symptom of a protracted bout of election failure-induced hangover from which he has not awakened to the reality that he is not the president. Like an unlicensed back seat driver that thinks himself to be a race car driver, Mr. Obi needs to tame his bloated and deluded imagination,” Morka said.

“Opposition politics is not about denying the administration’s many successes. It is about critiquing what may be wrong but affirming what is right. It is not about wholesale condemnation that is only intended to mislead and score cheap political gains. The steady progress of the Tinubu administration across sectors is undeniable and evident for all Nigerians to see,” the statement read.

The APC maintained that Tinubu remains focused on ensuring good governance and improving economic conditions for all Nigerians.

“It is hysterical that Mr. Obi, who was governor of a failed and forgotten administration in Anambra state of only 21 local government areas, would so brazenly boast of his capacity to govern Africa’s largest democracy. Obi bequeathed a sordid legacy of economic stagnation, infrastructural decay, ecological disaster, and religious polarisation,” Morka stated.

“Both as former Governor of Lagos State and now as President, Tinubu is a dogged achiever, bold and unwavering in tackling and transforming difficult challenges into opportunities. As he did for Lagos, President Tinubu is now doing for Nigeria with the economy rebounding steadily, posting productivity-enhanced trade surpluses in successive quarters, with a 3.6 percent economic growth forecasted for the current fiscal year; with a fast expanding foreign reserve; with revamped and operational local refineries; with food inflation on the decline; with a successful harmonisation of multiple exchange rates that now supports increased foreign direct investments and flow of remittances into the economy; and with a reasonably stable forex market,” he continued.

“The administration also has posted in its success column the cleared $7 billion forex backlog, and Ways and Means debt of over $30 billion; with a reduced debt serving ratio from 98 percent to about 64 percent; with increased oil production in excess of 1.8 mbpd, surpassing the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) quota of 1.5 mbpd for the first time in many years; with a repositioned stock exchange market that is now one of the most profitable in the world; with a vastly expanding Agricultural, Mine and Steel, Manufacturing, Creative and several other sub-sectors of the economy, in a push to increase the non-oil contribution to GDP; and with the Chatham House only recently adjudging the nation’s economy as the most competitive it has been in 25 years,” he added.

“Whereas global institutions and experts are applauding the unfolding silent economic revolution ably led by President Tinubu, Obi and his co-opposition drummers of empty partisan barrels continue to deny President Tinubu’s superlative and incomparable near mid-term successes and achievements,” Morka concluded.

  • Anambra APC Ticket: Why the stakes are higher this time

Anambra APC Ticket: Why the stakes are higher this time

As the All Progressives Congress, APC, prepares for the decisive April 5 primary in Anambra State, one truth stands clear: the stakes have never been higher. For the party and for Anambra, this election is not just another contest — it is an opportunity to rewrite the political narrative of the South-East, to consolidate the progressive ideals heralded by President Bola Tinubu, and to prove that the APC is ready to govern with credibility and competence in regions where it once struggled.

The Anambra governorship election in November 2025 is not an ordinary poll. It is the last off-cycle gubernatorial election before the 2027 general election. It is the litmus test of APC’s growth in the South-East and a referendum on the party’s ability to present viable, unifying leadership beyond its traditional base. This is why the APC must field its strongest, most acceptable and most strategic candidate. That candidate is Valentine Ozigbo.

It’s true that all the aspirants have best interests for Anambra State but in my consideration of what is the best interest for my party, the APC, Val Ozigbo meets my admiration.

Speculations have been rife that Ozigbo is a mole for Mr. Obi of the Labour Party, but I disagree with the allegation. It’s more like suggesting. If there are moles for Mr. Obi, they are better found in the states that Mr. Obi won during the 2023 election. Ozigbo’s anticipated victory in the November Anambra governorship election cannot guarantee significant votes for Peter Obi in the 2027 presidential election.

In as much as I hold Governor C.C. Soludo in very high regards, sadly, he is not a member of my political party, the APC, and in politics, loyalty to party comes first. Now that all eyes are on the APC gubernatorial ticket for the Anambra State election, Val Ozigbo has had memberships of the PDP, LP and now he is in the APC. He knows the terrain, ran for the elections, and I cannot say much for the rest of his rivals in the APC.

For those unfamiliar with Ozigbo’s remarkable journey, he is a man who rose from humble beginnings in Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area, to become a distinguished corporate leader, a philanthropist, and a unifier. From excelling as the best graduating student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to leading one of Nigeria’s most iconic corporations, Transcorp Plc, Ozigbo’s story is one of brilliance, tenacity, and integrity.

As Managing Director of Transcorp Hilton Abuja, he oversaw a $100 million renovation that transformed the hotel into Africa’s leading business destination. As President and Group CEO of Transcorp Plc, he led a conglomerate with interests in hospitality, power, and energy, championing innovation and corporate excellence. But more importantly, he has consistently translated personal success into public service through philanthropy, mentorship, and community development.

Ozigbo’s foray into politics in 2020 was no accident. It was a deliberate decision to leave the corporate boardroom and step into the public square—to answer a higher call of service. In 2021, running under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Ozigbo emerged as a formidable contender, coming a close second despite running against the combined might of the federal and state governments, entrenched political structures, and financial odds.

Since then, he has remained at the centre of Anambra’s political discourse. He played a crucial leadership role in the Obidient Movement of 2023, galvanising the youth and the middle-class electorate across the South-East. His recent decision to join the APC has opened a new chapter—bringing with him not only his formidable political structure but also the credibility and goodwill he commands across political divides.

In a state where zoning, religious alignment, and public acceptability are decisive factors, Ozigbo scores highest among all APC aspirants. According to a confidential evaluation document by the APC, he ranks first, scoring 74 per cent in key metrics, including zoning, religious support, and public popularity—outperforming the incumbent governor, Charles Soludo, in recent grassroots polls.

Ozigbo is not a transactional politician. He is a bridge-builder. His campaign is not about party supremacy—it is about people-centred leadership. He has built relationships across PDP, Labour Party, APGA, and civil society. His defection to APC has created a rallying point that could unify previously fragmented political interests in Anambra. If APC is serious about delivering a historic victory in the South-East, it must embrace this unifier.

Beyond numbers and strategy, Ozigbo is a leader of ideas. His vision for Anambra is well-documented—a clear economic plan anchored on digital economy, youth empowerment, security, and infrastructure. His investments in young people speak volumes: through the VCO Foundation, he has committed N400 million in partnership with Decagon Institute to sponsor 100 Anambra youths in software engineering, providing a pathway out of unemployment and poverty.

Critically, Ozigbo possesses something his rivals lack—an expansive grassroots movement and the ability to transcend party lines. In the 2021 election, he outperformed APC’s own candidate. Today, he has brought to the APC not only his capacity but also the goodwill of thousands who believe in his brand of leadership.

His campaign is self-funded, removing the burden of financial dependency from the party. His cosmopolitan corporate background, vast diaspora network, and clean political record set him apart in a field often riddled with godfatherism and mediocrity.

As APC looks towards November, the party must decide whether it wants a candidate who can win the primary—or a candidate who can win the election. The difference matters.

The people of Anambra are yearning for a new kind of leadership—one that transcends slogans and symbols, and delivers results. Valentine Ozigbo embodies that aspiration. For APC, he is not only the safest bet; he is the smartest one.

Mr. President, Aswaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, believes in harvest of talents, not about lobbying or money. Therefore, now is the time for our party to help the President harvest one of the talents so that the APC can avert the crisis as it is being experienced in the PDP presently.

The road to Anambra’s redemption begins with the right choice on April 5. The APC has a rare chance to make history. That chance is Valentine Ozigbo.

APC grants Otu automatic 2027 ticket

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River on Monday granted Gov. Bassey Otu and his deputy, Mr Peter Odey, an automatic ticket for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at the APC Secretariat in Calabar, the party’s Chairman, Mr Alphonsus Eba, urged other party members aspiring for political positions to begin their consultations.

Eba clarified that apart from the governor and his deputy, no other individual had been given an automatic ticket by the party.

He encouraged other aspirants to return to their constituents and seek their support ahead of the elections.

“The State Working Committee and the State Executive Committee of APC met today and resolved that Governor Otu will be the party’s sole candidate in 2027,” he said.

He explained that the decision was based on the principle of continuity, stating, “Nobody changes a winning team. The governor and his deputy will fly the party’s flag in 2027.”

He added that even if Otu was reluctant to run, the party would still present only one ticket with his name, as was done in 2022.

“We appeal to him to listen to the desires of party members and accept the nomination,” Eba stated.

He also praised the deputy governor, currently acting as governor, for supporting President Bola Tinubu’s actions in Rivers.

Eba noted that some individuals had misrepresented the state’s position. He commended the acting governor for clarifying that South-South governors had not consulted him before opposing Tinubu’s decision.

He applauded the President for restoring peace in Rivers, preventing a political crisis.

Confusion, allegation trail Anambra APC delegates congress

Awka—The All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress in Anambra State has ended in confusion, with allegations that the eight-man congress committee has gone into hiding.

The ward congress election, held across the 326 wards in 21 local government areas, was meant to select delegates for the gubernatorial primary election.

However, the delay in announcing the results has created anxiety among the seven governorship aspirants cleared by the APC national secretariat in Abuja.

The aspirants, including Sir. Paul Chukwuma, Prof. Obiora Francis Okonkwo, and Prince Nicholas Chukwujekwu Ukachukwu, are vying for the party’s flag bearer position ahead of the APC gubernatorial primaries on April 5, 2025.

Accusations are flying, with some pointing fingers at the state leadership of the party,   which is allegedly attempting to compromise the exercise.

However, the state chairman of APC, Chief Basil Ejidike downplayed the issue, saying that although there were small challenges, such challenges were not enough to derail the whole process.

It was gathered that members of the state executive of the party are aligning with different aspirants, which is adding to the emerging confusion.

In the meantime, three aspirants, one from Anambra North, one from Central, and the other from South, have become top contenders based on the voting pattern during the delegates’ election on March 15.

An official of APC in the state said the confusion surrounding the ward congress has raised concerns about the party’s ability to manage the outcome, which could lead to a serious implosion and potentially cost the party the governorship contest on November 8, 2025.

He said: “With the delegate elections largely concluded, all eyes are on the Election Supervision Committee. There is a widespread call for the committee to uphold transparency and fairness in the collation of results.

“The credibility of the process is vital for the Anambra APC and the future of democracy in Nigeria. At the heart of democracy lies consensus-building and interest aggregation, principles that thrive on shared values and trust. These ideals cannot be bought or imposed, and nowhere was this more evident than in the Anambra APC delegate elections.

“The election process was marred in a few  areas by skirmishes and acts of brigandage by rival aspirants to disrupt an otherwise peaceful process. These unfortunate incidents underscore a fundamental reality: desperation often takes over when inducement fails to sway committed party members.

“However, the Anambra APC members have shown remarkable resilience and clarity of purpose, rejecting attempts to compromise the integrity of the process through violence or financial inducement.”

  • APC dismisses El-Rufai’s allegation of running one-man show

APC dismisses El-Rufai’s allegation of running one-man show

ABUJA — THE All Progressives Congress, APC, on Tuesday night debunked the claims by some opposition elements that it operates as a one-man show.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma dismissed the allegations while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the first caucus meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

Governor Uzodimma said that the APC’s diverse representation across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including governors from various states at the meeting, underscored its inclusive nature.

He explained that the party’s structure, as outlined in its constitution, includes multiple leadership positions and a hierarchical framework that ensures broad participation in decision-making processes.

According to him: “Our party is united, stronger, focused, and supportive of the government. We need to celebrate our own. The government is heavily supported by the APC, and from time to time, we must show that we are behind the government.”

APC chieftain and former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, earlier accused the party of running a one-man show without regard for democratic processes.

Addressing concerns about internal democracy, Uzodimma contended that, “APC is a very large political party with executives at all levels. We have our internal mechanism for selection and executing democracy. Why are we winning all these elections? It’s because we have demonstrated high capacity and respect for democracy.”

Regarding allegations of exclusion, he said: “I don’t believe in hypothesis. I believe in practical things. Look at the governors from different zones here. What is the meaning of inclusivity when we have representation from all geopolitical zones?”

He further added, “You see the governor of Lagos, the governor of Edo, the governor of Sokoto. We are represented across board.”

On the allegation that the ruling party was running a “one-man show”, Uzodimma dismissed it by highlighting the diverse participation in party activities.

He said: “I don’t know what is the meaning of inclusivity when the six geopolitical zones are represented,” he reiterated.

On the party’s performance and future plans, the Imo State governor said: “As we speak, we are now better off in terms of revenue generation, in terms of getting more money to do more infrastructure, social change, and other economic dynamics. The APC is the party to beat and the envy of other political parties, not only in Nigeria but even in Africa.”

The APC has also launched a new Progressive Institute, which serves as the intellectual arm of the party. Uzodimma praised this initiative, saying, “You must have heard that there is a new progressive Institute initiated and built by our party, and that is the intellectual arm of the party where researches are being done, and other training of manpower building and the intellectual capacity being built by the Institute.”

President Tinubu’s efforts in managing insecurity were also commended during the meeting.

“The President has done very well in terms of managing insecurity in the country, as testified today by one of our members in Zamfara State, where there is relative peace. Now, people are going about their businesses. Farmers have gone back to their farms in the southeast,” Uzodimma said.

The meeting, held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, brought together key party leaders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje.

Uzodinma, who chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, noted that the APC’s structure ensures broad participation in decision-making processes, contradicting claims of a single individual dominating the party.

Uzodinma also emphasised the party’s commitment to internal democracy, citing upcoming elections and the selection of candidates as examples of its democratic processes.

The APC’s recent successes in elections, he argued, demonstrate its respect for democratic principles and processes.

The APC is set to hold a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting following the caucus, focusing on key party issues such as a non-elective convention and the establishment of The Progressive Institute among others.
