Osun PDP, APC Clash Over LG Polls as Governor Adeleke Imposes Movement Ban Ahead of Elections

In anticipation of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced a statewide restriction on vehicular movement from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. This measure aims to ensure a peaceful electoral process and prevent the influx of disruptive elements.

Governor Adeleke emphasized the necessity of this restriction to maintain order during the elections. He has instructed security agencies to enforce the directive, permitting only voters, accredited media personnel, and civil society organizations to move freely during the specified hours.

The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, conveyed this directive, highlighting the administration’s commitment to peace and security.

“Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered restriction of vehicular movement from 5 am to 5 pm on Saturday 22nd February 2025 across Osun state.”

“The directive of the State Governor was sequel to the statewide local government elections that are scheduled to be held tomorrow across the state.”

“Governor Adeleke who reiterated his commitment to peace and security said the movement restriction is necessary to prevent importation of hoodlums into the state amidst local elections.”

This decision comes amidst legal debates concerning the legitimacy of the elections.

“He therefore directed security agencies to enforce the restriction and only allow voters and accredited media and civil society organisations for the continued peace and security of Osun State.”

Tensions between the APC and PDP in Osun State escalated following the Court of Appeal’s ruling on the removal of APC local government chairmen and councillors.

The PDP maintained that the February 10 judgment by the Court of Appeal in Akure did not restore the sacked APC officials who were elected in 2022, while the APC argued that the ruling affirmed their right to return to office.

On Monday, the situation worsened as both parties engaged in clashes while attempting to assert control over local government secretariats across the state. According to the police, the violence left six people dead and several others injured.

Atiku praises Adeleke for proceeding with LG poll despite FG’s caution

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has praised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for moving forward with the state’s local government elections.

In a post shared on his official X handle on Saturday, Atiku urged for a peaceful and incident-free election. He also called on security agencies and electoral officials to carry out their responsibilities with utmost dedication and fairness.

“As residents in Osun State go out to the polls today to elect council chairpersons, I once again urge for a peaceful and hitch-free exercise,” Atiku stated. “The local council election is the heartbeat of a democratic system, given that its outcome impacts closely on the lives of the citizens. I commend Governor Ademola Adeleke for going ahead with the exercise and urge security agencies and polling officials to perform their duties with the highest sense of responsibility to the public.”

Despite Atiku’s support, the Federal Government, through the Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Nigeria Police, had called for the suspension of the election, citing credible intelligence suggesting potential violence and security threats if the polls were to proceed.

A statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, highlighted these concerns, stating that intelligence reports indicated a high risk of unrest if the elections were held as scheduled.

Osun State Government dismissed the security concerns raised by the Nigeria Police, arguing that the call for suspension was politically motivated. In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the government maintained that the elections must go ahead, upholding the principles of the rule of law and rejecting any perceived partisan interference.

Backing the state government’s position, an Osun State High Court in Ilesa ruled on Friday that vacancies existed across all 30 local government areas (LGAs) in the state. The court ordered the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to proceed with filling these positions.

Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe, presiding over a motion filed by the PDP against OSSIEC and its chairman, Hashim Abioye, directed law enforcement agencies to provide security during and after the elections.

This ruling follows a previous judgement by the Federal High Court on November 30, 2022, which invalidated the council elections held on October 15, 2022. The Federal High Court’s decision was later upheld by the Court of Appeal on January 13, 2025, reinforcing the need for fresh elections to address the vacant council positions.

Please recruit teachers now, schools suffering – APC chieftain begs Adeleke

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State, is pleased with Governor Ademola Adeleke for completing the teachers’ recruitment process to reduce the scarcity of teachers in public schools.

He also charged both the Federal and State Governments across the country to make education attractive to reduce out-of-school children across the country.

Speaking at the distribution of free 500 West African Examination Council, WAEC, and 300 Join Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB forms to students from the Ejigbo local government area of the state.

He said the teachers are a crucial component of the education system, stressing that the structures is not enough to impact knowledge on students.

His words, “I will encourage the government of Osun State to do more for education. The truth must be said the government has not done well in terms of education in Osun State. We have schools in Ejigbo that do not have teachers, I want to appeal to them to come to our aid, and let them employ more teachers.

“In the last two years, this government has not employed any teachers compared to Oyo State where they are employing teachers massively. We are appealing to the government to do something about it.

“The funds that government has is for the entire state and they must look into education. If any development will come to the country it can only come through education”.

He said his passion for education would see him collaborating with other individuals and the government to empower the youths to reduce restlessness.

Don’t politicise recruitment into Amotekun – Group warns Adeleke

As the Osun State Government begins recruiting 1000 cadets for Amotekun Corps in the State, a civil society coalition in the State, The Osun Mastermind, TOM, has warned Governor Ademola Adeleke against politicising the exercise.

Governor Ademola Adeleke approved the recruitment of 1000 cadets for Amotekun Corps in the State to bolster security across the State, and the process started last week.

Meanwhile, while addressing newsmen at its Monthly state-of-the-state address in Osogbo, TOM’s Executive Director, Professor Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, said employing security personnel should not be based on political loyalty but patriotism to the State.

“The sensitive nature of Amotekun Corps as a security outfit makes it paramount that we warn the Ademola Adeleke-led administration not to make recruitment into the Corps a political affair. We must ensure that only those with a passion for ensuring the security of lives and property are employed into the outfit”, he said.

While commending the state government for its plan to recruit into the Amotekun Corps and also into the Imole Youths Empowerment scheme, he stressed the need to allow diversity in the process with giving priority to any political party.

His words, “The plans to recruit into both organisations will not just provide short to long term empowerment for successful candidates, but it will also serve as a long term means of human capacity development in our State. Our vast population of young unemployed persons has already become a thing of worry for most concerned stakeholders in our society. Such massive recruitment is thus a welcome development

“However, as has noted in previous government recruitment of this nature, politics has the capacity to derail whatever good intentions government may claim to have”.

“Stop wearing fake shit” – Davido’s elder brother Adewale with a message for the general public

Davido’s elder brother Adewale Adeleke is issuing a stern warning to the general public, with regards to the use of fake designer items.

In his tweet, Adewale spoke about how it is unwise for people to wear fake designers because they’re easy to spot.

Adewale Adeleke’s post came without any prior prompting, which has led netizens to wonder who he was throwing shade at, or if it is just a regular PSA.

Another set of netizens were more concerned with the fact that he was talking down on people who can’t afford original designers, and they dragged him mercilessly.

Honestly, if you’ve ever visited “Mandelas Lagos,” you’d be surprised by the quality of the fakes or imitations there, and you might
even be tempted to buy one. Don’t overthink fashion. Wear what suits you, brings you peace, and fits your budget.”
