    Midnight fire ravages warehouse, shops in Ladipo market

    LAGOS—A raging midnight fire, Monday night, destroyed a warehouse and several shops in Ladipo Odo, Mushin, Lagos State, resulting in massive losses.

    Although there were no casualties, it was learned that the fire rapidly engulfed a warehouse surrounded by multiple shops, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

    Among the affected sections were electronics, generators, bicycles, auto spare parts, furniture, mobile phones, home appliances and power bikes.

    Confirming the incident, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that following distress calls at 12:09 a.m., LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team arrived the scene about 12:16 a.m., to battle the blaze.

    Oke-Osanyintolu saidL “Although the exact cause of the fire was initially unknown, a post-disaster assessment determined that the inferno was triggered by power surge after public electricity was restored to the area.

    “Authorities successfully contained the fire and completed a dampening-down operation to prevent reignition. Additionally, shop owners and warehouse occupants were sensitised on fire safety measures to prevent a recurrence.”

    Tragedy struck in the early hours of Tuesday as a midnight inferno engulfed Ladipo Market in Mushin and Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road, Lagos, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

    According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out at Ladipo Market around 1 a.m., ravaging several shops and warehouses filled with mechanical tools, vehicle spare parts, motorcycles, and household electrical appliances.

    Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in either incident, as confirmed by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which successfully curtailed the fire by 6 a.m.

    Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed that emergency teams from Isolo, Bolade, and Alausa Fire Stations battled the flames at Ladipo Market. Despite challenges in accessing the affected areas, firefighters managed to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjoining properties and businesses.

    Meanwhile, another fire erupted at Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road, affecting several shops dealing in metallic materials. Firefighters from the Alausa and Ikorodu Fire Stations responded swiftly, bringing the situation under control by 5 a.m.

    Adeseye reassured the public that investigations would determine the cause of both fires once firefighting operations reach the damping-down stage.

    “Thankfully, no casualties were recorded in either incident. The causes of the fires will be ascertained as soon as firefighting operations progress to the next stage,” she stated.

    200-level student drowns in Bayelsa creek over N300 bet

    A 200-level Chemical Engineering student of the Federal University, Otuoke, reportedly drowned at the Ekoli Creek in Yenagoa over an N300 bet.

    The incident occurred on Sunday morning, but the corpse had yet to be recovered, and the name of the deceased remained unknown.

    Sources privy to the development revealed that the victim placed a bet with some people that he could swim across the river. However, as he was swimming, he went under the water and had not surfaced since.

    A source who is a student of the university said, “Yesterday morning, a 200-level Chemical Engineering student made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river. They all raised N300 each for the stake.

    As he was swimming, he dipped and he has not been seen after that. He is still missing up till now.”

    Attempts to reach the Public Relations Officer of the university, Ms. Mercy Ekott, were unsuccessful as she did not answer calls to her mobile number.

    When contacted for comments, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Musa Mohammed, said he had yet to be briefed on the incident. Mohammed could not provide the name of the deceased student, stating, “I have no information on the incident.” He promised to provide updates as soon as he received any.

    A driver yet to be identified hit two female siblings returning from school on Monday along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    The driver, according to a statement on Tuesday by the Lagos police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin, was plying the BRT lane at high speed when he hit the siblings at Ogundare bus stop.

    “On Monday, February 24, 2025 at about 1535hrs, a yet-to-be-identified driver, while plying the BRT lane on high speed at Ogundare bus-stop along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, hit two female pedestrians, siblings aged 12 and 15, on their way back from school,” the statement said.

    “The accident victims sustained serious degrees of injuries and were quickly evacuated to Orile Agege General Hospital for treatment, where the 12-year-old sadly passed on while receiving treatment, while the other victim was later transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for further treatment.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare M. Jimoh while disclosing that a speedy, detailed and conclusive investigation has since commenced, hereby calls on road users, particularly motorists, to strictly comply with traffic rules/laws, speed limits and safe driving practices.”

    The police commissioner, the statement said, commiserated with the bereaved family and said the police would get to the root of the matter and ensure justice is served.

    A resident of Nadabo village in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State has allegedly stabbed her husband to death following a domestic dispute.

    Police spokesman of Bauchi Command, Ahmed Wakil, said in a statement that the couple had been having problems regarding custody of their daughter from a previous relationship.

    “In February 24, 2025, the Bauchi State Police Command apprehended Salamatu Danjuma, a 25-year-old resident of Nadabo village in Tafawa Balewa LGA, in connection with the unfortunate death of her husband, following a domestic dispute,” the statement said.

    “Preliminary investigations reveal that the couple had been facing ongoing marital challenges regarding the custody of Salamatu’s six-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

    “Despite initial discussions with her family that seemed to favour welcoming the child into their home, the husband later refused, which heightened tensions between them.

    “The situation escalated drastically when Salamatu, feeling cornered by her husband’s refusal and in a moment of heated argument, used a knife from their bedroom, resulting in a tragic outcome.

    “Responding swiftly to a distress call, detectives from the Bununu Police Divisional Headquarters drafted to the scene.

    “They evacuated the victim to the Cottage Hospital in Bununu for immediate medical assistance. Unfortunately, the attending medical staff later confirmed the husband’s death due to the injuries sustained.”

    Wakil further noted that the Commissioner of Police, Auwal Mohammed, had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough and discreet inquiry into the matter.

    The management of Federal University Lokoja has shut down the university indefinitely following the students continuous protest.

    The students commenced the protest on Monday following the killings of their colleagues by a trailer who rammed into the school shuttle bus, killing seven person instantly.

    The closure of the school was disclosed in a circular with Ref. Number FUL/R/GEN/REGC/03 issued on Thursday by Dr. Rebecca Aimiohu Okojie, Registrar and Secretary to Council, and copied Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command Director, DSS Kogi State.

    The circular reads “Following the unfortunate loss of the lives of five students to a tragic trailer accident at Felele city centre on Monday, 17 February, 2025, students have barricaded the gates of the university despite magnanimous interventions from the the State Government as well as frantic efforts and appeal by the University Management for calm.

    “Accordingly, arising from the advice of the State Security Agencies and to forestall further loss of lives, the Vice-Chancellor after due consultation with Management, has decided on behalf of Senate, that the University (both campuses) be closed down Indefinitely within one hour of release of this circular.

    “Students are therefore, to vacate the campuses on/or before 12 noon today, Thursday, 20th February, 2025. Please note for strict compliance.”

    Two dead, many injured in Zamfara market explosion

    At least two people have died, and over 40 others sustained severe injuries after a gunpowder explosion at a market in Talata Mafara Local Government Area (LGA) of Zamfara State.

    The Chairman of Talata Mafara LGA, Yahaya Yari, confirmed that two people lost their lives in the explosion, which occurred on Tuesday at the town’s weekly market.

    Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview on Wednesday, Yari described the incident as unfortunate and stated that more than 44 people were injured.

    He said the incident occurred in the afternoon while activities of the weekly market were ongoing at a place where locally made guns were displayed for sale.

    “When the incident happened, we immediately took emergency response, which controlled the situation and took the victims to hospital.

    “After receiving minor treatment at Talata Mafara General Hospital, we took all the 44 injured victims to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, for further treatment.

    “Out of the 44 victims, two have died; the remaining 42 are currently responding to treatment,” the chairman explained.

    Yari prayed to Allah to prevent recurrence of such an incident again.

    He appealed to the people of the state to continue to pray for sustainable peace and stability in the state and the country in general. (NAN)

    Mike Bamiloye pays tributes to Abattoir actress Flora

    Renowned drama evangelist and founder of Mount Zion Faith Drama Ministry, Mike Bamiloye, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of gospel actress Toluwalope Adegboyega-Alagbe, popularly known as Flora in the ‘Abattoir’ series.

    Flora, celebrated for her powerful performances, died on February 4, 2025, due to injuries sustained in a car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in December 2024.

    In a heartfelt tribute shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, Bamiloye described her death as a transition to eternal rest, reaffirming his faith in God’s purpose and the mission of Christian filmmaking.

    “We are soldiers…on the battlefield! Jesus is our commander! When He calls our names, we shall answer a million times!” Bamiloye wrote.

    Reflecting on the loss, he added, “When you cross over to Heaven, you forget all pains and griefs.

    “No shaking! Tolu left a great impact and was called home to heaven! We shall continue till the end!”

    Despite the grief, Bamiloye emphasised that the mission of faith-based storytelling remains steadfast.

    “The devil cannot touch us without God knowing about it! We will not keep quiet! We move! More Abattoirs! More Abejoyes!!!”

    The filmmaker encouraged fellow gospel filmmakers to remain dedicated to their calling.

    Flora’s death follows that of another ‘Abattoir’ actor, Moses Korede Are (Baba Gbenro), who died in November 2024 and was laid to rest on January 31, 2025.

    Meanwhile, Bamiloye’s son, Joshua, also paid tribute to the late actress in an emotional X post on Wednesday.

    At least 20 people were hurt after a car crashed into a crowd in the German city of Munich on Thursday, emergency services said, a day before the city hosts a high-profile security conference.

    The incident also came 10 days before Germans head to the polls in a key election on February 23.

    “At the moment there are 20 injured, several of them seriously and some of them in a life-threatening condition,” fire service spokesman Bernhard Peschke told AFP.

    Local media reported that the car, a Mini Cooper, drove into a group of striking workers from the Verdi union and that ambulances had rushed to the scene.

    An AFP reporter at the scene saw one person wearing a high-visibility jacket on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance.

    The Munich police department said on X that “the driver of the vehicle has been detained and does not present a danger”.

    The ground at the scene close to the city’s historic centre was littered with items including glasses, shoes, thermal blankets and a pushchair.

    Munich police spokesman Thomas Schelshorn told reporters at the scene that “the circumstances around the incident and how it happened are still being investigated”.

    An eyewitness who was among the striking workers told the local BR42 website that he “saw a person lying under the car” after it drove into the crowd.

    He said the police then came and shot at the car window.

    Other eyewitnesses told the site that a man had been shot at and taken away by police.
    The incident comes a day before the city is due to host the high-profile Munich Security Conference.

    US Vice-President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are among those expected to attend the two-day security meet.

    Germany holds parliamentary elections on February 23.

    Abakaliki – The Ebonyi State Government has extended its condolences to the Nwaji family following the tragic loss of 11 family members in a petrol tanker explosion at Ugwu Onyeama along the Anambra-Enugu Expressway.

    Governor Francis Nwifuru, represented by his wife, Mrs. Uzoamaka Nwifuru, led a delegation to commiserate with the bereaved family in Abofia village, Ebonyi Local Government Area. The deceased, including a father, mother, six children, younger brothers, an apprentice, and a housemaid, were returning from Anambra State for the burial of their late father, Chief Augustine Nwaji, when the accident occurred on January 25, 2025.

    Expressing deep sorrow, Mrs. Nwifuru described the tragedy as an irreplaceable loss not only for the family but also for the entire Ebonyi State. “This tragedy is deeply painful, and we share in the sorrow of the Nwaji family. Losing multiple family members in such a horrific manner is beyond comprehension. As a government, we stand with you in this time of grief and assure you of our unwavering support,” she stated.

    The Chairman of ALGON and Ebonyi Local Government Area, Mr. Chinedu Uburu, alongside the Chief of Staff, Government House, Prof. Emmanuel Echiegu, also paid tribute to the victims. They reassured the family of the government’s commitment to providing necessary support to help them through this difficult time.

    A grieving family member, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwaji, called on the government to enforce regulations requiring heavy-duty vehicles to operate primarily at night to prevent such devastating accidents. He expressed gratitude to the state government for its visit and support, requesting continued prayers as they mourn their loved ones.

    The Ebonyi State Government reiterated its resolve to stand by the Nwaji family and the entire Abofia Agbaja community in their time of sorrow.
