    Samsung co-CEO Han Jong-Hee dies at 63

Samsung Electronics co-CEO Han Jong-hee, credited with boosting the South Korean tech giant’s television business on the global stage, died of a heart attack Tuesday aged 63, the company told AFP.

“He died from cardiac arrest today,” a Samsung spokesperson said, adding that Han was survived by his wife and three children.

Han joined Samsung in 1988 and was seen as having played a key role in getting its high-end TV sets noticed worldwide.

“Han was central in the unveiling of Samsung’s world-class LED TVs,” the firm said in a company biography published earlier this month.

“His numerous other innovations enabled the company to continually demonstrate its technology leadership,” it added.

Han was credited by the company with taking Samsung televisions “to the pinnacle of the global market” — and keeping them there.

Samsung Electronics is the flagship subsidiary of South Korean giant Samsung group, by far the largest of the family-controlled conglomerates that dominate Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

Han was not part of the Samsung family, which still dominates the company, with third-generation leader Lee Jae-yong the current chief of Samsung Electronics.

Han’s death could deal a blow to Samsung’s strategy to keep its number one place in the global TV market, Kim Dae-jong, professor of business administration at Sejong University in Seoul, told AFP.

“Considering he has been deeply involved in Samsung’s TV business for decades, helping it firmly secure its global standing, his absence could affect its global strategy for years to come.”

Samsung, like other TV titans LG and TCL, has been packing ever more AI into huge screens that are inching towards being digital assistants capable of chatting with users and other devices in homes.

    – AI headwinds –

Han’s death also comes as the world’s largest memory-chip maker faces business headwinds in its race to produce chips used in artificial intelligence.

Analysts have said Samsung was struggling to meet demand for chips used in AI servers, especially from US titan Nvidia.

Meanwhile, local rival SK hynix has become the US giant’s main supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips for its AI graphics processing units.

The challenging conditions prompted Samsung Electronics chairman Lee to declare that the company must adopt a “do-or-die” mindset to confront the challenges posed by AI, according to media reports last week.

Samsung acknowledged in October that it was facing a “crisis”, admitting that questions had arisen about its “fundamental technological competitiveness and the future of the company”.

At the company’s general meeting of shareholders last week, the last public event Han attended, he also noted that the company would need fresh momentum to gain an edge in the competitive AI field.

“We will continue to pioneer in various areas such as robotics, medtech and next-generation semiconductors to secure new growth momentum,” he told the meeting.

Samsung’s operating profit sank almost a third in the fourth quarter last year, owing to spending on research.

Samsung’s struggles come as the tech world has been shaken by news of DeepSeek new R1 chatbot, which sparked a rout in tech titans earlier this year and raised questions about the hundreds of billions of dollars invested in AI in recent years.

9 children still missing after attack on Akwa Ibom community —Youths

Uyo—Nine children are still missing in Ndito Eka Iba village, Ibeno Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State after the attack on the community on 2024 Christmas eve by their neighbouring Esit-Eket and Eket LGA over lingering boundary issue.

The youths of the areas and some parents disclosed this to newsmen.

The Youths’ President of the community, Mr Ukot Robert, said some parents have even concluded that their children have been killed during the attack since they could not be found since December.

Robert also disclosed that recently, residents of Ndito Eka Iba, were privileged to know that their attackers were still ambushing and maiming their people along the coastal axis of the community.
He said the youths have recently apprehended and handed over five persons to the police, who came to destroy some properties in Ndito Eka Iba after the December 24, 2024, attack.

He said: “Some parents have been looking for their children after the incident, but to no avail. The children got missing during the attack in Ndito Eka Iba on the eve of 2024 Christmas.

“For people to miss from that December 2024 till now means that they may have been killed. The community had set up a search party to continue looking for them, while the incident has been reported to the Police for investigation.”

The youth leader lamented how their neighbouring Eket and Esit Eket LGAs have continued to unleash mayhem on them following Ibeno’s refusal to cede these communities to them under remapping of Akwa Ibom.

He listed names of some of the missing children to include Emmanuel Udoeka (11), Happiness John (8), Ikotiye Okon (6), Thompson John (3), Friday Moses (4), John Mfon (9), Gabriel Akpan (8), Susana Peter (7) and Ubong Benselem (14).

He regretted that the crisis between them and their neighbouring LGAs was triggered when the issue of remapping the state during the immediate past administration which they and other oil producing communities in the state had strongly kicked against.

Also speaking, the Ijaw Youth Chairman in Ibeno LGA, Emmanuel Opolo warned that, their attackers should stop pushing Ibeno to retaliate, noting that they have been attacked four times between February 2024 to February 2025.

  • Heavyweight boxing legend George Foreman dies aged 76

Heavyweight boxing legend George Foreman dies aged 76

Boxing heavyweight legend George Foreman has died aged 76.
Known as Big George in the ring, the American built one of the most remarkable and enduring careers in the sport, winning Olympic gold in 1968 and claiming the world heavyweight title twice, 21 years apart – the second making him the oldest champion in history aged 45.

He lost his first title to Muhammad Ali in their famous Rumble in the Jungle fight in 1974. But overall, he boasted an astonishing total of 76 wins including 68 knockouts, almost double that of Ali.
Foreman retired in 1997 but not before he agreed to put his name to a best-selling grill – a decision that went on to bring him fortunes that dwarfed his boxing earnings.
His family said in a post on Instagram on Friday night: “Our hearts are broken. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.”
The statement added: “A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two time heavyweight champion of the world, He was deeply respected – a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name – for his family.”
Tributes poured in from others across the sport, with former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson saying Foreman’s “contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten”.
The Ring magazine, often dubbed the Bible of Boxing, described him as “one of the greatest heavyweights of all time”.

“[He] will be remembered as an icon of the sport forever.”

Foreman was born in Marshall, Texas, on 10 January 1949, and raised along with six siblings by a single mother in the segregated American South.

He dropped out of school and turned to street robberies before eventually finding his outlet in the ring.

Foreman won the heavyweight gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, aged 19, before turning pro and winning 37 consecutive matches. He lost only five bouts over his career.

He beat previously undefeated reigning champion Joe Frazier in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1973 knocking him down six times in the first two rounds.

His 1974 Rumble in the Jungle against Ali in Kinshasa, Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, remains one of the most famous boxing matches ever.

Ali, the older man, was the underdog after he was stripped of his crown seven years earlier for refusing to be drafted into the Vietnam War.

Foreman reflected on the legendary fight 50 years later in an October interview with BBC World Service Newshour, explaining that everyone thought he was going to decimate Ali.

“Oh, he’s not going to last one round,” the boxer said experts were predicting at the time.

Foreman told the BBC he typically would get “real nervous” and have “butterflies” before any boxing match, but that night – it was the “most comfortable” he had felt.

But the wily Ali used a tactic that later became known as “rope-a-dope”, which wore out Foreman, causing him to throw out hundreds of punches before Ali unloaded on him in the eighth round and scored a knockout.

After a second professional loss, Foreman retired in 1977 and became an ordained minister at the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Texas, which he founded and built.

He told the BBC his defeat to Ali became the “best thing that ever happened to me” as it ultimately led him to “get my message out” through preaching.

Foreman launches his grill in London, UK, in 2001

He recalled that his preaching started small, on street corners and with friends, then grew.

“We began meeting informally at various homes in Houston, and before long, the crowds became too large for most houses to accommodate,” Foreman said on his website.

“Eventually, we bought a piece of land and an old, dilapidated building on the north-east side of Houston.”

Foreman came out of retirement in 1987 to raise money for a youth centre he founded. He won 24 matches before losing to Evander Holyfield after 12 rounds in 1991.

In 1994, Foreman knocked out undefeated Michael Moorer to become the oldest ever heavyweight champion at age 45.

He became ad pitchman for his George Foreman Grill, which millions have purchased since it hit the market in 1994, thanks in part to his memorable catchphrase, the “Lean Mean Grilling Machine”.

Foreman was married five times. He has a dozen children, including five sons who are all named George.

He explained on his website that he named them after himself so they “they would always have something in common”.

“I say to them, ‘If one of us goes up, then we all go up together,” he explained. “And if one goes down, we all go down together!’”

Four killed in Ecuador bridge collapse

At least four people were killed after a busy 200-meter (656-foot) suspension bridge collapsed in Ecuador, government officials said Friday.

Four trucks, a car and two motorbikes fell into the Magro river some 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of the port of Guayaquil when the bridge collapsed on Wednesday.

Footage of the aftermath showed a truck teetering over a guardrail at the edge of the bridge, meters from a river submerging the structure.

“The bodies of four missing people have been found,” the National Secretariat of Risk Management posted on X.

Rescuers were searching for one person still missing, it added.

The bridge connected the province of Guayas, where Guayaquil is situated, with other provinces in the north.

Guayas governor Marcela Aguinaga said she had received no reports of it being faulty.

“From what we can deduce at this point, the bridge was overloaded,” she added on social network X.

The bridge’s collapse comes in the middle of the rainy season in the Andean nation.

At least 20 people have been killed in flooding and landslides that have damaged 45 bridges, according to the risk management ministry.
