  • Madison Keys stuns Swiatek to set up Australian Open final against Sabalenka

Madison Keys stuns Swiatek to set up Australian Open final against Sabalenka

Madison Keys fought back from a set down on Thursday to shock Iga Swiatek in a nail-biter and set up an Australian Open final against two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.

The 19th seed battled through a thrilling semi-final on a final-set tiebreak against the world number two 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (10/8) after Sabalenka had swept aside Paula Badosa in straight sets.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek had not dropped her serve since the first round but was broken eight times by Keys, who saved a match point on her way to edging a see-sawing, marathon battle in 2hr 35min.

It is the American’s first final in Melbourne.

It was the first time ever an Australian Open semi-final had been decided by a third-set 10-point tiebreak.

Earlier, Sabalenka put her close friendship with Badosa aside to stay on track for a 26-year first.

The Belarusian world number one romped home 6-4, 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena.

It was very different in the second of the semi-finals, as Keys flew out of the blocks and broke Swiatek in the opening game — the first time the Pole had dropped her serve since the first round.

It signalled the start of a roller coaster first set in which both players struggled for control. Three breaks each were exchanged before Swiatek finally edged it on her second set point after 49 minutes.

The world number two was far from convincing, and the second set saw a massive turnaround.

Keys surged back in sizzling fashion, breaking Swiatek four times, unleashing three huge aces in one game, as she took it to a deciding third set where she saved a match point before finally getting over the line.

    – ‘So proud of myself’ –

Sabalenka has now won 20 straight matches at the Australian Open to close on a third consecutive crown — something that hasn’t happened this century.

The last person to achieve the feat was Martina Hingis in 1999 and only four other women have completed the three-peat — Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles.

Court was in the stadium watching.

“Honestly, I don’t know. I’m so proud of myself. I’m proud of my team that we’re able to put ourselves in such a situation,” Sabalenka said of being on the cusp of a third title.

“It’s a privilege, you know. If I’m able to put my name into history, it will mean a lot. It will mean the world to me.”

Sabalenka last year described Badosa as her “best friend” and “soulmate” and said she was “super happy” that they got to play each other on such a big stage.

“A tough match, tough battle,” she said.

“I hope she’s still my friend. I’m sure she’ll hate me for the next hour, day or two, but I’m okay with that, I can handle that.”

The 11th seed Badosa had stunned world number three Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach her maiden Slam semi-final at the age of 27 and came out swinging to open a 2-0 lead.

But that was as good as it got as Sabalenka powered back and sped to victory.

Despite losing, Badosa’s run to the last four capped a remarkable comeback after a brutal back injury in 2023 had her last year considering quitting tennis.

Instead, her Melbourne exploits will return her to the top 10 for the first time since October 2022. Keys will also return to the top 10.

  • Europa: Fernandes’ late strike hands Man United dramatic victory over Rangers

Europa: Fernandes’ late strike hands Man United dramatic victory over Rangers

Man United closed in on a direct passage to the Europa League last 16 thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ late winner to beat Rangers 2-1 in Thursday’s Battle of Britain.

The Red Devils looked set to suffer more disappointment at Old Trafford when Cyriel Dessers levelled for an injury-ravaged Rangers in the 88th minute.

But Fernandes spared United’s blushes and possibly the playoff round by blasting home in stoppage time.

United move up to fourth in the table with one match of the league phase remaining.

The top eight will qualify directly for the last 16, which may now be beyond Rangers, who slip to 13th.

However, the Glasgow giants did themselves proud in the circumstances as Philippe Clement had to turn to two teenagers off the bench in the second half as his injury problems mounted.

Ruben Amorim had blasted United’s current crop as the worst in the club’s history after a bruising 3-1 defeat to Brighton at the weekend.

That was a fourth defeat in five home games and United’s nervousness in front of an expectant crowd was clear to see in the early stages.

Rangers were left to rue not making more of the first big chance of the match when Altay Bayindir denied Nico Raskin and Ridvan Yilmaz chipped the rebound over.

Alejandro Garnacho has been linked with a move away in the closing weeks of the transfer window as United look to ease their issues with meeting profit and sustainability rules.

The Argentine is attracting interest from Napoli and Chelsea and should have signed off with at least one goal if it is to be his final appearance for the club.

Garnacho’s goalbound effort was deflected over by Raskin before United had the ball in the net from the resulting corner.

Matthijs de Ligt’s towering header was controversially ruled out for a foul on Robin Propper and VAR did not intervene.

Amad Diallo has been the shining light in troubled times in Amorim’s early months and was keen to make an impression against his former club, where he spent an unfruitful loan spell during the 2021/22 season.

Diallo was largely kept quiet, although Jack Butland had to block a low shot after a neat one-two with Bruno Fernandes.

Already shorn of John Souttar, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Ianis Hagi, Danilo and Oscar Cortes, Rangers had to cope with three more injuries as Leon Balogun and Connor Barron did not appear for the second half and Vaclav Cerny limped off on the hour mark.

Clement had to throw on two 18-year-olds with barely any first team experience in Bailey Rice and Findlay Curtis.

Yet, they were ultimately only beaten by a huge error from one of their most experienced players.

Butland did not play for United during a spell with the Red Devils in 2023.

The former England international endured a nightmare return as he punched Diallo’s corner into his own net to break the deadlock.

United failed to press home the advantage as Garnacho fired a glorious chance off the post from close range.

And they could have been punished as Dessers smashed home after Harry Maguire got caught underneath a long ball.

Not for the first time this season, Fernandes rode to United’s rescue with the one moment of quality in a scrappy game when he cushioned Lisandro Martinez’s cross through Butland’s legs.

Rangers are still set to at least make the playoff round and have an outside chance at making the top eight if they beat Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox next week.

United travel to Romanian side FCSB with a point likely enough to secure place in the last 16.

  • Borussia Dortmund sack coach Nuri Sahin after Champions League setback

Borussia Dortmund sack coach Nuri Sahin after Champions League setback

Borussia Dortmund have fired struggling head coach Nuri Sahin after Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League loss at Bologna, saying on Wednesday they had “lost faith” in the young manager.

Dortmund were beaten finalists in the competition last season, but the loss on Tuesday was the club’s fourth in a row in all competitions.

In the Bundesliga, Dortmund sit 10th, 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Sahin was assistant to former Dortmund coach Edin Terzic in last season’s surprise run to the Champions League final where they lost to Real Madrid and was promoted to head coach in the summer.

“We have unfortunately lost faith that we will achieve our sporting goals,” sporting CEO Lars Ricken said of the current management.

Ricken said the decision “hurts… but was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.

“We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much, we hoped for a long collaboration and until the end we had hope that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together.”

Dortmund, who host Werder Bremen in the league on Saturday, as yet have not nominated a successor for the coach.

German media reported potential successors included former Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag, who has been seen watching Dortmund games recently, or one-time Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt.

A disappointed Sahin said he “unfortunately was not able to live up to Dortmund’s sporting ambitions at this point in time.

“I wish this special club all the best.”

After Tuesday’s loss, Sahin told reporters “if I am the problem, or if a change of coach solves the issues, then that’s no problem at all.”

Under Sahin this season, Dortmund have found it particularly tough away from their 82,000-capacity Westfalenstadion fortress, having lost nine and won just four of their 15 away matches.

Sahin’s side were also eliminated in the last 32 of the German Cup by Wolfsburg.

  • Sabalenka Swiatek eye final showdown at Australian Open

Sabalenka Swiatek eye final showdown at Australian Open

Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are clear favourites to win their respective semi-finals on Thursday and set up a blockbuster Australian Open title decider.

The men’s finalists at Melbourne Park will be decided on Friday, leaving the women in the spotlight in a night-time double-header at Rod Laver Arena.

First up at 7:30 pm (0830 GMT) will be the world number one and defending champion Sabalenka against Spain’s 11th seed Paula Badosa, followed on to the centre court by five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek against Madison Keys.

Sabalenka can become the first woman since Martina Hingis in 1999 to win the Australian Open three years in a row.

If she does, she will join a select group of five women who have completed the Melbourne three-peat. The others are Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles.

“I’m really happy that I put myself in this situation where I have the opportunity to become one of them,” said the 26-year-old Belarusian.

“To be next to those names, wow, that’s just a dream.”

Badosa stunned world number three Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach her maiden Grand Slam semi-final at the age of 27.

“She’s a great player and she has been through a lot. Now she’s back on her best game. I’m really happy to see that,” said Sabalenka.

    – Calmness, confidence –

The Spaniard almost quit tennis last year because of a chronic back condition and she plunged outside the top 100.

“A year ago I didn’t know if I had to retire from this sport,” said Badosa, who reached a career-high two in the world in 2022.

Poland’s Swiatek has been the dominant force in the women’s draw so far, matching her previous best Australian Open run from 2022, when she lost to Danielle Collins in the last four.

The world number two has dropped only 14 games so far in her five matches — seven of those in her first-round clash.

She has exuded an air of calmness and confidence as she aims not only to win a maiden Australian Open title but also retake the number one ranking from Sabalenka.

If the Belarusian fails to make the final, Swiatek will again rise to the top.

Should Swiatek and Sabalenka meet in the final, the winner would leave Australia with the number one ranking.

Swiatek must first get past 19th seed Keys.

The American is into the Melbourne semi-finals for the third time, 10 years after her first, and on a career-best 10-match win streak after clinching the Adelaide title this month.

“Madison is a great player and experienced so you never know,” Swiatek said.

“It will be tricky, I will just be focused on myself. She has already played a good tournament here and we are well aware of how she can play.”

The 29-year-old Keys says she is a “smarter” player than the one who lost the semi-final in 2015 to eventual champion Serena Williams.

She added: “Probably a little bit less fearless though, but to be here 10 years later in the semi-finals again, I’m really proud of myself.”

  • PSG sink Man City with stunning Champions League comeback

PSG sink Man City with stunning Champions League comeback

Paris Saint-Germain produced a stunning second-half fightback as they recovered from two goals down to beat Manchester City 4-2 in a Champions League thriller on Wednesday.

The result leaves Pep Guardiola’s side still at risk of an early exit.

All the goals came in the second half on a wet night at the Parc des Princes, with Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland scoring to put City firmly in control.

However, Ousmane Dembele pulled one back and Bradley Barcola brought PSG level by the hour mark, before Joao Neves headed the French champions in front and Goncalo Ramos wrapped up the win at the death after a long VAR check.

Both of these powerful clubs came into their penultimate game in the league phase in Paris in trouble, with 24th-placed City occupying the last qualifying spot in the 36-team standings on eight points, and PSG one point behind them in 26th.

City knew a win here would probably guarantee them a spot in next month’s play-offs while landing a damaging blow to PSG, semi-finalists last season.

Instead it is PSG who move to 10 points, a tally which may now be enough to progress, while Guardiola’s team drop out of the qualifying spots with just one game to come.

However, a win at home to Club Brugge next Wednesday should suffice as it would take them above the Belgian side in the standings.

This match saw City coach Guardiola, who led his side to Champions League glory in 2023, pit his wits against PSG’s Luis Enrique, his close friend and former team-mate at Barcelona.

Champions League holders Real Madrid got back on track in Europe with a 5-1 victory over RB Salzburg on Wednesday to ensure they will not be eliminated at the first hurdle.

Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes struck twice each with French superstar Kylian Mbappe also on target in a ruthless display at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side lost three of their first six games in a worrying start to the competition and will likely have to compete in the extra play-off round in February which is part of the competition’s new format, unless they can scrape a top-eight spot.

Victory left Los Blancos 16th, a point behind Bayer Leverkusen in eighth, which is the final spot for direct qualification to the last 16.

    Rodrygo

Brazilian winger Rodrygo struck twice in the first half to help Madrid take control, with Mbappe netting soon after the break and Vinicius grabbing a brace of his own to bring up a century of goals for the club.

“I’m very happy after reaching 100 goals with this shirt,” Vinicius told Movistar, noting he was close to Brazilian compatriot Ronaldo Nazario’s tally of 104.

“I hope to be able to continue like this and score a lot of goals, and mark an era in this team — that’s my dream.”

Defeats by Liverpool, AC Milan and Lille put Madrid under pressure ahead of their final two group matches and their Austrian visitors started with vim, pinning back Los Blancos.

Madrid created little of note until Rodrygo’s opener after 23 minutes changed the dynamic of the game.

Madrid created little of note until Rodrygo’s opener after 23 minutes changed the dynamic of the game.

The winger, in sensational form in recent weeks with eight goals in his last nine games across all competitions, finished neatly after Jude Bellingham nudged a cross into his path at the back post.

His second goal was even better, set up by Bellingham with a brilliant backheel, which Rodrygo finished first time with a crisp curling strike.

“It’s so easy to play with Jude, he makes everything easy, the movements he makes, his second assist was very nice and I love playing with him,” said Rodrygo.

    Mbappe

Mbappe notched the third early in the second half, pinching the ball from Salzburg goalkeeper Janis Blaswich and tapping home to continue his own recent run of fine form after a shaky start to life at Madrid.

Veteran midfielder Luka Modric sent Vinicius down the left with a fine pass for Madrid’s fourth, and the Brazilian finished with a powerful drive across Blaswich.

Vinicius netted again after Fede Valverde burst down the middle and put him through after a slick team breakaway, with the forward stroking home with ease after losing his marker.

Mads Bidstrup slapped home a volley late on to offer Salzburg scant consolation, as well as carrying on Madrid’s unenviable run of conceding in each of their Champions League outings this season.

Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard netted in the second half at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal climbed to third place in the standings.

Arsenal have won five of their seven league phase matches, losing just once, and are almost certain to finish in the top eight, which secures automatic qualification for the last 16.

The north Londoners, who have never won the Champions League, travel to Girona for their last match in the league phase next week knowing a point will guarantee a top-eight berth.

With Arsenal holding a three-point lead over a group of teams below eighth place, even a defeat could still send them through given their superior goal difference.

This was a much-needed victory for Arsenal after last weekend’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, in which the Gunners blew a two-goal lead to dent their Premier League title hopes.

Arsenal have won just two of their last six games in all competitions and moving to the brink of the Champions League last 16 is a welcome boost following their FA Cup exit against 10-man Manchester United and League Cup semi-final first leg loss to Newcastle.

Arteta had urged his players to take advantage of their “strong position” in the league phase by winning on home turf against a Dinamo team fighting to secure a place in the knockout stage play-offs.

They rose to the challenge as Arteta’s decision to play Jakub Kiwior in central defence in the absence of the injured William Saliba was rewarded.

Jurrien Timber had struggled in the heart of Arteta’s defence in the Villa game, but Kiwior was more comfortable alongside Gabriel Magalhaes.

Arsenal made a flying start in the second minute as Gabriel Martinelli surged down the left flank and crossed towards Havertz, whose cushioned pass was lashed home by Rice from 10 yards.

The Gunners’ quickest Champions League goal since 2014 provoked an angry response from Dinamo fans, with Rice pelted with plastic cups when he took a corner moments after his opener.

Rice was unfazed and his goal-bound drive was blocked by Dinamo captain Arijan Ademi before Gabriel headed just wide from Odegaard’s corner.

Gabriel screamed in frustration after that miss and Arteta looked equally vexed when Havertz headed woefully wide from another good opportunity.

Croatian champions Dinamo, managed by former Italy World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, barely got out of their own half for long periods.

Odegaard and Raheem Sterling combined to set up Martinelli but the Brazilian’s 20-yard drive was too close to Dinamo keeper Ivan Nevistic.

With Arsenal struggling to deliver the knockout blow, Ethan Nwaneri replaced Sterling as the teenage forward returned from a four-game injury absence.

Havertz finally put the result beyond doubt in the 66th minute, rising to meet Martinelli’s pin-point cross with a glancing header from 12 yards.

After Havertz’s wife was sent death threats following his penalty shoot-out miss against Manchester United, the striker is beginning to work his way back into favour among Arsenal fans.

The much-maligned German’s second goal in his last two games took him to 14 in all competitions this season.Odegaard wrapped up the comfortable victory in stoppage-time with a cool finish from Leandro Trossard’s cross.

Joao Neves’ diving header put PSG on top before Goncalo Ramos added a late fourth as the French champions climbed from 26th in the table to 22nd and bumped City out of the qualifying spots for the knockout phase.

“I don’t know how we did it, to be honest,” PSG coach Luis Enrique told Canal Plus.

  • Real Madrid break billion-euro revenue barrier to top Money League

Real Madrid break billion-euro revenue barrier to top Money League

Real Madrid are the first football club to top a billion euros in revenue during a single season, fuelled by income generated by the revamped Santiago Bernabeu stadium, according to financial experts Deloitte.

The order of the clubs at the top of Deloitte’s annual Football Money League stayed the same, with Madrid (1.05 billion euros, $1.09 billion) followed by Premier League champions Manchester City (838 million euros) and Paris Saint-Germain (806 million euros).

The 208-million-euro gap between first and second is the biggest Deloitte have ever recorded.

The dramatic refurbishment of the home of Real Madrid doubled matchday revenues to 248 million euros in the 2023/24 campaign.

Madrid have taken out loans totalling more than a billion euros since 2018 to renovate the Bernabeu, with the aim of turning it into a major source of revenue.

The state-of-the-art venue now boasts an undulating metal roof, shops, expanded VIP areas and a retractable pitch.

Pop megastar Taylor Swift is among the big names who have performed at the stadium since it reopened, while the NFL’s first game in Spain will take place there later this year.

However, Madrid’s aim of using the Bernabeu, which has a capacity of about 80,000, to generate extra cash has been hit by complaints over noise pollution from residents, with the club temporarily suspending the hosting of concerts.

“Club stadia are increasingly being valued as more than just matchday assets, with a number of clubs converting their grounds into multi-use entertainment venues that attract new visitors, sponsors, and retail opportunities.” said Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group.

“Football clubs are now realising the value of becoming far more than sporting brands, with media and entertainment becoming intertwined with the commercial potential that they have to offer.”

Despite an 11 percent rise in matchday revenue, commercial remained the biggest revenue source for the 20 Money League clubs for the second year running, accounting for 44 percent of total revenue.

Broadcast revenue was stable at 4.3 billion euros as each of the “Big Five” leagues –- England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany — remained in the same domestic broadcast cycle as the preceding season.

English clubs continue to dominate, fuelled by the Premier League’s television revenues, with six of the top 10 and nine among the 20 Money League clubs.

Manchester United rose to fourth on the back of a return to the Champions League (771 million euros), ahead of Bayern Munich (765 million euros).

Barcelona slipped to sixth as renovation work on their Camp Nou stadium has forced the Catalan giants to switch to the smaller Montjuic, which hosted the 1992 Olympics.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea complete the top 10 even though the latter three clubs missed out on the Champions League last season.

Mohamed Salah Downplays Liverpool Contract Progress After West Ham Thrashing

Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian star, has revealed that talks over a new contract with Liverpool have not progressed significantly, despite his dazzling performance in a 5-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday.

The win helped the Reds extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points.

Salah, who scored one goal and provided two assists in the game, has now tallied an incredible 20 goals and 17 assists in just 24 appearances across the Premier League and Champions League this season.

However, his future at Anfield remains uncertain, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season. Alongside teammates Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Salah could begin discussions about a free transfer with foreign clubs as early as January 1.

Despite reports suggesting that an agreement is close, Salah dismissed the claims in an interview with Sky Sports.

“We are far away from that,” Salah said. “I don’t want to put something in the media and people start saying stuff, but nothing really has moved on. Now I am focused on the team and hopefully we win the Premier League.”

Liverpool’s dominant form has put them in pole position to claim a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title, and Salah is laser-focused on helping his team achieve that milestone.

“The only thing in my mind is that I want Liverpool to win the league and I want to be part of it,” Salah added. “That is the only thing I have focused on. I will do my best to win the trophy. We are in the right direction, but there are other teams trying to catch up with us. We just need to stay humble and go again.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who has won 23 of his 27 matches since succeeding Jurgen Klopp, hailed Salah’s form this season. When asked if Salah is currently the best player in the world, the Dutchman agreed that his statistics speak volumes.

“If you look at his numbers, you can’t argue that, but there are different players in different leagues that have a lot of quality,” Slot said.

“But Mo is definitely up there at the moment. He could have scored more today, but I also liked his work rate for the team without the ball. He’s in a very good place. Let’s hope he can stay like this for a long time.”
