  • Slot said ref Oliver to blame if Liverpool fail to win title

Slot said ref Oliver to blame if Liverpool fail to win title

Liverpool manager Arne Slot told referee Michael Oliver he would blame him if the club failed to win this season’s Premier League.

The Dutchman was shown a straight red card after he confronted Oliver and one of his assistant referees on the pitch following his side’s 2-2 Merseyside derby draw with Everton last month.

Slot was given a two-match ban and fined £70,000 by an independent Football Association commission after accepting a charge of acting in an improper manner and using insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards both the match referee and an assistant referee.

Oliver alleged Slot, while shaking the official’s hand, said: “If we don’t win the league, I’ll [expletive] blame you.”

Slot disputed the alleged language used, claiming he instead said “if we don’t win the league, I will have you to thank for that”.

But the commission decided it was “more likely than not that Arne Slot used the language alleged by the referee and the FA”.

The FA argued the discrepancy didn’t make a material difference to the sanction because the words used still constituted Slot acting in an improper manner.

Slot accepted that, and did not dispute stating “[expletive] disgrace” to the assistant referee as part of his angry outburst.

The FA also alleged the Reds boss said Oliver “[expletive] give them everything”, and hoped the referee “was proud of that performance”.

Slot acknowledged his actions were unacceptable and he let his frustrations get the better of him, because he felt certain decisions during the game went against his side.

The commission acknowledged he had since made a sincere apology both privately and in public.

Slot’s fine was reduced from £100,000 due to mitigating factors, including his apology, admitting the charge at the earliest opportunity and because he had no previous record of misconduct.

Speaking before Liverpool’s Champions League last-16 first-leg match against Paris St-Germain on Wednesday, Slot said: “The moment it happened, I was quite emotional [about] everything that happened in the game.

“I chose to go on the pitch instead of staying calm and staying inside to talk to Michael [Oliver]. I don’t have these emotions now so I should set a better example.”

Slot’s assistant coach Sipke Hulshoff was also given a two-match touchline ban and fined £7,000 after the FA alleged he approached Oliver in an “extremely aggressive manner”, and said he was a “[expletive] disgrace”.

Liverpool and Everton were both charged with failing to ensure their players did not behave in a way which was improper or provocative.

The late chaos at Goodison Park began after James Tarkowski scored a dramatic 98th-minute equaliser for Everton, which was awarded after a video assistant referee (VAR) check.

Liverpool were adamant the goal should have been disallowed because of a shove by Toffees striker Beto on Reds defender Ibrahima Konate in the build-up.

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure then celebrated in front of the Liverpool fans at the final whistle, before being confronted by visiting midfielder Curtis Jones, with both players sent off for second yellow-card offences.

Slot and Hulshoff were both shown the red card after approaching Oliver on the pitch.

After serving the touchline ban, Slot’s first domestic game back in the dugout will come after the international break when his side face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final on 16 March.

Liverpool, who are 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League, host Everton at Anfield on 2 April.

  • Real Madrid 2 1 Atlético Madrid

Real Madrid 2 1 Atlético Madrid

Brahim Diaz scored a brilliant winner to give Real Madrid a slender advantage over city rivals Atletico after the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Rodrygo put the hosts ahead inside four minutes in the Bernabeu when he sprinted past Javi Galan and chopped inside the box before bending a wonderful hit past Jan Oblak.

Atletico, though, quickly settled into the game and levelled in the 32nd minute with another wonderful goal.

The in-form Julian Alvarez picked up the ball on the left side of the box, wrongfooted Eduardo Camavinga and whipped a spectacular curling strike around Thibaut Courtois and in off the post.

It was the Argentine striker’s seventh goal in nine appearances in the competition this season.

But it was Diaz, another former Manchester City player, who claimed the decisive goal in an electric Madrid derby.

The Spaniard sent Atletico defender Jose Gimenez to the floor as he skilfully waltzed into the box before driving a low shot into the far corner in the 55th minute.

The 25-year-old midfielder had stepped up in Jude Bellingham’s absence, with the England international serving a one-game suspension after picking up his his third yellow card in the competition against Manchester City earlier this month.

Bellingham will be available for the defending European champions when they make the short trip to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano for the return on Wednesday, 12 March (20:00 GMT), with the winners likely to face Arsenal in the last eight after their 7-1 first-leg thrashing of PSV in Eindhoven.

Atletico midfielder Conor Gallagher told TNT Sports: “Real Madrid are a top team and I think we competed well. I think it was a decent performance.

“We would’ve liked to get a better result but it’s all to play for in the next leg. We feel we can beat any team and with our fans behind us, it helps, and we’ll be looking forward to it.”

Moments of magic decide derby outcome

This was a Madrid derby defined by three moments of outstanding individual brilliance.

First, it was Rodrygo. The Brazilian beat Galan for pace to sprint on to Federico Valverde’s pass before cleverly cutting back to confidently sweep Real into an early lead.

He had a penalty appeal waved away moments later as he again got the better of Galan, who appeared to grab hold of Rodrygo and step across him in the box.

Asked if Rodrygo was underrated, Carlo Ancelotti told TNT Sports: “Not for us. Rodrygo for us, he helped us win the Champions League, he helped us a lot to win the Champions League in the last three years.”

But the 24-year-old’s opening strike was soon overshadowed by Alvarez’s stunning effort. The Argentina international has hit a purple patch for Atletico in recent weeks and that continued as his audacious effort made it six goals in his last seven games.

The 25-year-old, who left Manchester City for £81m in the summer, has been Atletico’s key figure in this campaign and his goal against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday moved them two points above Real – and one behind leaders Barcelona – in a tight La Liga title race.

England international Gallagher said Alvarez’s strike “didn’t surprise” him.

The former Chelsea player, who came off the bench in the 64th minute, added: “It was an unreal goal. It doesn’t surprise me. He’s playing with so much confidence, he’s a top player and a top guy.”

But Diego Simeone’s men were unable to push on and claim a rare win at the Bernabeu as Diaz wrapped up victory for Real, linking up well with Vinicius Jr before his darting run into the box ended with a delightful finish.

The game seemed to lack the hostile atmosphere and aggression of a typical derby between them, with Diaz’s celebration – jumping into the jubilant crowd – the only yellow card of the match.

Real, who have won the previous five Champions League meetings against Atletico in knockout ties, had a late chance to claim a two-goal cushion for the second leg.

But Kylian Mbappe’s poor ball to Vinicius Jr meant the Brazilian missed out on a tap-in.

  • Record-breaking Arsenal enjoy carnival season in Eindhoven

Record-breaking Arsenal enjoy carnival season in Eindhoven

Eindhoven has been packed with carnival-goers in recent days but on Tuesday it was Arsenal enjoying their own party in the city, getting over their goalscoring crisis and setting a Champions League record in the process.

Mikel Arteta’s side became the first team in Champions League history to score seven goals away from home in the knockout stages of the competition as they romped to a 7-1 win over PSV Eindhoven.

It was the most goals the Gunners have scored in a single game since beating Newcastle 7-3 in the Premier League 13 years ago.

The Arsenal manager said the win had given his players “joy and confidence and belief”, but was not getting carried away when questions were put to him about the records that his team had broken.

“For sure, it’s something that hasn’t been done, so great to be part of that,” Arteta said. “But as a team we want to achieve many other things that are far more important than that.

“The happiest thing is we are in a very strong position to go to the next round, which is where we want to be.

“But there’s still a job to do in London in a week’s time.”

After failing to score in their past two games, a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest and 1-0 defeat by West Ham, Arteta may not have seen a victory like this coming.

“This will give them great confidence for the rest of the season. Right from the start Arsenal had control of the game,” said Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Arsenal were ruthless with their finishing, some of the combination play in the final third was sensational.

“Martin Odegaard looked back to his best. To a man they were really strong and that centre-back pairing [Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba] is phenomenal.

“Arsenal will take some stopping in this competition.”

England and Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice was one of the players singled out for his performance during the game and said that the Gunners have got the reward for their hard work in recent weeks.

Rice, who had a goal ruled out for offside, said Arsenal were “fluid” and possessed the “enthusiasm, drive and hunger” that the knockout stages demand.

“But we’ve been playing like this all season,” he added. “We feel we’ve been playing well as a team. Sometimes we score five, sometimes two, sometimes we don’t score but [on Tuesday] we did well. It all clicked.”

Arsenal’s lack of a recognised striker has been well documented, with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz both injured. But six different players contributed to the rout on Tuesday – Odegaard scored twice, along with goals for Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino, Ethan Nwaneri, Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori.

The emphatic win means that Arsenal can start planning for a trip to Madrid, as they are set to take on the winner of the tie between Real and Atletico, which finished 2-1 to Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Next week’s second leg takes place at Atletico.

Nwaneri shows why he’s earned Arteta’s trust

Ethan Nwaneri scored his eighth goal of the season

Arsenal’s excellent 17-year-old Nwaneri again showed why there is so much hype and excitement about his future in the game.

The academy graduate has been given the task of filling in for Bukayo Saka on the right hand side of Arsenal’s attack while the England international is out injured. The teenager has repaid that faith in him with eight goals in 28 games in all competitions.

That goal return puts him alongside some of England’s most iconic young players.

Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney scored nine goals each in all competitions when they were aged 17 or younger and Nwaneri now has 16 days before his 18th birthday to try to match or beat that record.

“I don’t think that he needs any pushing. You see every time what the intention is,” Arteta said. “If it comes, it comes and it’s great.

“I’m really impressed with the way he behaved and the way he played. It’s about consistency and now doing it again three days later in another big stadium.”

Nwaneri also became the third youngest player to score a goal in a knockout stage match in the Champions League after Bojan in April 2008 (17 and 217 days) and Jude Bellingham in April 2021 (17 and 289 days).

“He’s 17 years old and he’s on the biggest stage,” Rice said.

“We’ve taken [the youngsters] under our wing and they deserve to be playing. You should see them train they way they have no fear and want to perform.

“Even if Saka was here Ethan would be still getting minutes because he’s that good and works so hard in training. We have so many top young players.”

Nwaneri was joined in the starting XI by his team-mate from the academy Myles Lewis-Skelly and the 18-year-old also impressed despite being withdrawn in the first half to avoid him getting sent off.

Lewis-Skelly, who had been booked earlier, put in a late tackle on Richard Ledezma and although he was unpunished, Arteta substituted him moments later.

“They play like they have been here for many years,” captain Odegaard said.

“So much quality and confidence, they’re ready for it. I’m not worried about them, we enjoy having them in the team and they have a great attitude.”

Odegaard, who himself started playing senior football at 15 years old, believes that Lewis-Skelly can use his early withdrawal as a learning experience.

“He took that really well,” he added. “He knew it was a tricky position to be in. He was on a yellow and had a tough challenge too. He took it well and we’re all there to support and I’m sure he will learn from that too.”

LeBron James becomes NBA record scorer with 50,000 career points

LeBron James became the first player in NBA history to score 50,000 career points on Tuesday, extending his lead as the league’s all-time record scorer by reaching a milestone tally that may never be surpassed, AFP reports.

The Los Angeles Lakers superstar went into the game against the New Orleans Pelicans with 49,999 regular and postseason points after a 17-point performance in Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

It did not take long for the 40-year-old NBA icon to get the solitary point needed to reach the 50,000-point barrier.

James, who is in dazzling form in the 22nd season of a glittering career, gathered a pass from Luka Doncic and unfurled a sublime 25-foot three-pointer to move to 50,002 points with the Crypto.com Arena crowd roaring their acclaim.

James had passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s previous all-time regular-season scoring record of 38,387 points in 2023 – itself a record that had stood for 39 years.

James is now nearly 6,000 points clear of Abdul-Jabbar’s total career points tally of 44,149, with Karl Malone third (41,689 points) and the late Kobe Bryant fourth with 39,283 points.

Michael Jordan is fifth on the all-time scoring list with 38,279.

Among active NBA players, only Kevin Durant with just over 35,000 points – roughly 15,000 points behind James – makes the top 10.

Kehinde Aladefa, in her tribute, described the late coach’s dedication to the sport writing, “His selflessness was unmatched. His work ethic was tireless. His confidence, is unwavering.

  • Awoniyi still not fully fit — Ex-Palace striker Morrison

Awoniyi still not fully fit — Ex-Palace striker Morrison

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison has cast doubt on Taiwo Awoniyi’s current form, telling the BBC that the Nottingham Forest striker is still not fully fit and lacks the game-reading abilities of his teammate Chris Wood.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live while analysing Forest’s FA Cup victory over Ipswich Town, Morrison provided a critical assessment of Awoniyi’s performances this season.

The Nigeria international has found game time severely limited, starting just 20 Premier League matches and playing a mere 250 minutes compared to Wood’s 2,196 minutes across 27 games.

Morrison specifically highlighted Awoniyi’s tactical shortcomings, saying, “Taiwo Awoniyi doesn’t read the game like Chris Wood does. You can see he’s a striker coming back to full fitness.”

The commentary comes at a challenging time for Awoniyi, who has struggled to make a significant impact at Nottingham Forest under new manager Nuno Espírito Santo.

The statistics paint a stark picture of Awoniyi’s struggles. While Wood has been prolific, scoring 18 league goals, Awoniyi has managed just a single strike this season. His limited involvement has raised questions about his role in the team and his potential international prospects.

In the recent FA Cup match against Ipswich, Awoniyi started but was replaced by Wood in the 82nd minute as Forest pushed for a winner, further underlining the pecking order at the club. This pattern of limited game time and reduced effectiveness has become a recurring theme for the former Liverpool striker.

The timing of Morrison’s comments is particularly significant, coming just before the release of the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe on Tuesday. Awoniyi’s ongoing form issues may have contributed to his absence from the national team selection.

  • National lightweight title win thrills Adebayo

  • Fencing: Brou secures bronze for Nigeria at African Junior Champs

Fencing: Brou secures bronze for Nigeria at African Junior Champs

Teenage fencing sensation Inkosi Brou has secured Nigeria’s first medal at the ongoing 2025 African Junior Fencing Championships in Luanda, Angola.

The grandson of the former Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Dora Akunyili, Brou recently displayed his burgeoning talent at the Almaty Saber FIE Junior World Cup, held from February 14 to 16, before heading to Angola to clinch a medal for Nigeria.

Representing Nigeria from the diaspora, Brou delivered a stellar performance, demonstrating the skill, resilience, and fighting spirit of Nigerian athletes. His achievement further cements Nigeria’s rising status in international fencing.

Another promising Nigerian fencer, Peluola Akinbamiro, was also set to make her mark in the competition but unfortunately missed her first bout due to a last-minute schedule change that was not communicated on time.

Despite this setback, she remained focused and determined, embodying the resilience that defines Nigeria’s growing fencing community.

“This achievement marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian Fencing Federation, showcasing our strides in the sport through intense preparations, strategic partnerships, and notable achievements. Brou, a US-based athlete, won the only medal for a Sub-Saharan African nation on March 1,” NFF president Adeyinka Samuel said in a statement.

“Competing on the international stage presents both opportunities and challenges for the teenager. Brou’s dedication to representing Nigeria, despite being born and raised in the United States, exemplifies his passion and commitment. His journey from an unranked 15-year-old in October 2023 to his current standings reflects significant progress.

“With a strong start to the year and a historic medal win in Angola, the Nigerian Fencing Federation remains committed to developing the sport, supporting its athletes, and elevating Nigeria’s reputation in global fencing.”

After the championship in Angola, the NFF said it is making strategic preparations for the Wuxi World Championship which will be held from April 7–15, and the Senior African Championship in June.

These efforts include team selection, logistics, and training plans to ensure Nigerian fencers compete at their best on the world stage.

  • Joshua right to turn down Dubois rematch – Khan

Joshua right to turn down Dubois rematch – Khan

Former British boxer Amir Khan believes Anthony Joshua should forget about a rematch with Daniel Dubois, declaring that ‘AJ’ was right to turn down an immediate return fight after his devastating knockout defeat last September.

Speaking exclusively to Prime Casino, the fan-favourite boxer said Joshua made a brilliant and smart decision by avoiding an immediate rematch with the powerful IBF Champion.

“I don’t think he should have taken that re-match. It’s the best choice he’s made,” Khan said.

Khan was particularly critical of Joshua’s chances against Dubois, describing him as a bogeyman who perfectly exploited the British Nigerian’s fighting style in their previous encounter.

While acknowledging that Joshua might eventually need to confront Dubois, Khan believes his fellow British boxer is currently better served seeking easier opponents that guarantee significant financial rewards.

“I think he made the right choice by not taking it now but in the future it’s still a fight. And even if he never fights him again, he tried, it happened, we’re all prize fighters and at this time he can make money elsewhere with an easier opponent,” he said.

“You always have that one opponent who is always going to be the bogeyman, who is always going to beat the style that AJ has, and I think that is Dubois. He was punch perfect when I saw that fight.”

The fight in question saw Joshua suffer a brutal fifth-round stoppage at Wembley, effectively halting his bid to become a three-time world heavyweight champion. Joshua’s team cited injuries and insufficient preparation time when declining an immediate rematch.

Dubois has since moved on, with rumours suggesting he is more likely to rematch Oleksandr Usyk for an undisputed title shot. Meanwhile, Joshua remains without a clear path to a major bout, with Tyson Fury’s retirement further complicating the heavyweight landscape.

The only potential immediate option appears to be Joseph Parker, the WBO Interim Champion, who has expressed willingness to face Joshua again.

  • ‘Osimhen deal difficult for United’

    ‘Osimhen deal difficult for United’

Manchester United’s pursuit of Victor Osimhen appears to be fraught with financial obstacles, with transfer expert Ben Jacobs saying that a feasible deal for the Nigerian international may be impossible for the struggling Premier League side.

The Red Devils find themselves in a challenging position this season, currently languishing in 14th place in the Premier League and having parted ways with former manager Erik ten Hag early in the campaign.

Despite the appointment of Ruben Amorim, the team continues to face significant challenges both on and off the pitch.

United’s forward line has been a particular source of concern, with neither Joshua Zirkzee nor Rasmus Hojlund consistently delivering the goals needed to lift the team’s performance. This has intensified speculation about potential striker signings, with Osimhen emerging as a prime target.

Currently on loan at Galatasaray after a contentious summer transfer window with Napoli, Osimhen has continued to impress with 22 goals in 27 appearances, further fuelling transfer speculation.

However, Jacobs provides a sobering assessment of the potential move, telling GIVEMESPORT, “It could become irrelevant whether Osimhen is open to Manchester United if Manchester United can’t afford that deal.”

The transfer expert highlighted multiple financial barriers preventing the move.

“Right now it’s, financially, very difficult for Manchester United,” Jacobs explained. He pointed to several critical issues, including the club’s Profitability and Sustainability Regulations position, the potential lack of European football next season, and reduced broadcast revenue from missing out on the Champions League.

Recent reports have suggested various scenarios for Osimhen’s future, including a potential swap deal involving Rasmus Hojlund. Napoli, who retain Osimhen’s contract until 2026 with an option to extend to 2027, are reportedly evaluating multiple options for the striker.

The Nigeria’s international situation remains complex. After negotiations with Chelsea and Saudi clubs collapsed last summer, Osimhen signed a contract extension and moved to Galatasaray on loan. His performances in Turkey have continued to attract attention from top European clubs.

While Manchester United would undoubtedly view Osimhen as a statement signing, the financial realities suggest the move may be more challenging than initially anticipated.

The club may need to explore alternative options or potentially defer their interest until their financial position improves.
