Gabon holds first presidential election since 2023 coup

Gabonese voters began casting ballots on Saturday in a presidential election with eight candidates that is widely expected to make junta chief Brice Oligui Nguema the oil-rich central African country’s first elected leader since his 2023 coup.

Oligui, the general who led the August 30, 2023, putsch that ended 55 years of iron-fisted dynastic rule by the Bongo family, who were accused of looting Gabon’s wealth, has been leading in opinion polls.

Snaking queues were seen outside polling stations in Libreville, the seaside capital.

Aurele Ossantanga Mouila, 30, voted for the first time ever after finishing his shift as a croupier in a casino.

“I did not have confidence in the earlier regime,” he said.

Oligui took the role of transitional president while overseeing the formation of a government that includes civilians, tasked with drawing up a new constitution.

The country of 2.3 million people is casting ballots at a time of high unemployment, regular power and water shortages, a lack of infrastructure and heavy government debt.

Despite successive plans, only 2,000 of the 10,000 kilometres (6,213 miles) of roads in the country are “usable”, according to official data. Derailments are frequent on the sole rail link and youth unemployment exceeds 60 percent in rural areas.

Oligui ditched his military uniform as he campaigned for a seven-year term against seven rivals, including Alain-Claude Bilie By Nze, who served as prime minister under Ali Bongo before the coup.

    – ‘The special candidate’ –

Around 920,000 voters are eligible to cast their ballots from 7:00 am (0600 GMT), with the polling stations closing at 6:00 pm and final results expected on Monday.

Oligui has predicted a “historic victory” in the election.

“The builder is here, the special candidate, the one you called,” Oligui said Thursday among the music and dancing at his closing rally in the capital Libreville.

But critics accuse Oligui, who had promised to hand power back to civilians, of failing to move on from the years of plunder of the country’s vast mineral wealth under the Bongos, whom he served for years.

Oligui’s image has been plastered all over the capital Libreville alongside his campaign slogan “C’BON” — a play on the French words for “It’s good” and the junta chief’s initials — while those of his rivals are nowhere to be seen.

Bilie By Nze, his main opponent, has cast himself as the candidate for a “complete rupture”.

He has accused Oligui, who led the Republican Guard in the Bongo years, of representing a continuity of the old system.

Oligui served as patriarch Omar Bongo’s former aide-de-camp before becoming chief of the presidential guard under his son Ali Bongo.

    – ‘Transparent ballot’ –

Whoever wins will have to meet the high hopes of a country where one in three people lives below the poverty line despite its vast resource wealth, according to the World Bank.

Gabon’s debt rose to 73.3 percent of GDP last year and is projected to reach 80 percent this year.

Analyst Neyer Kenga likewise pointed to “the return to constitutional order” as one of the key campaign issues, in the hope the vote puts an end to the country’s strife.

In the past weeks, the interior ministry has been at pains to insist Saturday’s vote will be “a transparent ballot and an election accessible” to all.

“Today all Gabonese are firmly in favour of a democratic game that is played within the rules,” said Neyer Kenga.

Following years marked by a post-vote crisis in 2009 and 2016’s bloodily repressed protests — not to mention the August 2023 coup — “the people’s response at the ballot box is never known in advance”, she added.

Carry your cross, Sen Orji fires back at Ikpeazu

UMUAHIA – Former Governor of Abia State, Senator Theodore Orji, has fired back at his successor in office and the immediate past governor of the state, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, telling him to “carry his cross” and stop making “careless statements” about others.

Senator Orji popularly known as Ochendo Global, was reacting to a media comment credited to Ikpeazu where the latter described elected leaders who criticise their predecessors in office as “lazy leaders.”

Ikpeazu who spoke at an event in Abuja, was also reported to have said that in 2015 when he took over, he met the state in a gloomy state.

But in a swift response, Senator Orji chided Ikpeazu for saying he met Abia in a gloomy state.

Senator Orji who spoke through his former Liaison Officer and Senior Aide, Hon. Ifeanyi Umere, faulted Ikpeazu for “in one breath, condemning leaders who criticise their predecessors, and in the other breath, criticising his predecessor”.

The former governor told his successor to take responsibility for his actions and inactions while in office, instead of shifting blame to anybody.

He said: “Ikpeazu should once again carry his cross and take responsibility for his actions and inactions instead of looking for who to blame as governance is not necessarily about making speeches.”

Ganduje leads APC NWC to Buhari hours after Atiku, El-Rufai’s visit

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), visited former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna State on Friday.

The visit came just hours after a notable delegation of opposition leaders, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, also met with Buhari. That group included former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former Minister of Communications Isa Pantami.

Speaking to reporters after the visit, El-Rufai insisted the meeting had no political undertones, advising “adversaries” not to lose sleep over it.

The APC leadership has not disclosed the details of their discussions with Buhari. However, the visit follows closely on the heels of a similar one by a delegation of APC governors led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who delivered Sallah greetings and congratulated Buhari on the successful conclusion of Ramadan.

Amid these back-to-back engagements, concerns have been rising over the potential defection of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) faction from the APC. The CPC, one of the four parties that merged in 2013 to form the APC, counts Buhari among its key founding members.

Despite the swirling speculation, Buhari has reiterated his loyalty to the ruling party, stating that he has no intention of leaving the APC.

APC has no structure; it’s a one-man show — Bode George

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has dismissed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as lacking any real political structure, describing it as a “one-man show”.

The elder statesman made the statement on Wednesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief while addressing the possibility of a third political force, such as the Social Democratic Party (SDP), emerging ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The APC has no structure; it’s just a one-man show,” he said.

He emphasised that any meaningful political alternative must prioritise the people and not personal ambitions. “What should come first is the people. Then, our attitude to manage the resources of this country for the benefit of the people. Individualism can never solve this. Personal ambition is a very dangerous, stupid approach to problem-solving.

“You must give in to something and must allow the freshness in the minds of the people of this country. Governance is about them; power should be from them.”

PDP will resolve its crisis at next NEC meeting

Speaking earlier in the interview, George also addressed the internal crisis within the PDP. He expressed optimism that the party’s issues would be resolved at its next National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

His words: “This thing started like a little sore; now it’s almost like a cancer that spreads. It began with the inordinate ambition of individuals; it didn’t just start yesterday.”

He continued, “The PDP has a system by which we will resolve our problem. The day we have the next NEC meeting, we’ll resolve our problem. So many people have been interpreting the position, laws, [and] constitution of the party to soothe themselves.”

According to him, the meeting will provide an avenue for honest deliberation. “I believe that when we meet, we will fight, discuss and debate. In the long run, we will come to a unanimous decision because we will now put at the centre of discussion the process established by the founding fathers of the party. Those who don’t like it can take a walk and join another party.”

He added that the party is aware of those stirring trouble and must act decisively. He warned, however, that if the PDP fails to resolve its issues at the next NEC meeting, “that’s the end.”

AA quits CUPP, says opposition lacks legal backing to exist

A major crack has emerged within the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) as the Action Alliance (AA), a frontline opposition party, has announced its immediate withdrawal from the coalition.

In a statement personally signed on Wednesday by its National Chairman, Chief Kenneth Udeze, the party cited a loss of shared values and interests as the reason for its decision.

Udeze explained that the decision to exit CUPP followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and party leadership.

“CUPP no longer represents our collective values due to its lack of legal backing, internal organizational structure, leadership, and—most importantly—the loss of the collective strength it had when the organization was formed ahead of the 2019 general election,” he stated.

Until the announcement, Chief Udeze had been an active member of CUPP.

His statement read in part: “With a heavy heart and a clear conscience, we announce our party’s decision to withdraw our membership from CUPP.

This was not an easy decision. However, after careful consideration and reflection, our party has come to the realization that our values and principles are no longer aligned with those of the coalition.

Over time, we have participated in discussions, meetings, and events that led us to question CUPP’s direction. Despite our efforts to contribute through constructive criticism, we now believe our differences are irreconcilable.

We appreciate the opportunities we had to engage with like-minded individuals within CUPP who are committed to deepening democracy and promoting good governance. However, we can no longer support an organization that lacks legal standing, leadership, and cohesion.”

Udeze affirmed that Action Alliance remains committed to promoting good governance and democratic principles, continuing its work through its membership in the Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC).

  • 2027: Tread softly, perish your presidential ambitions, APC cautions Atiku, el-Rufai

2027: Tread softly, perish your presidential ambitions, APC cautions Atiku, el-Rufai

Abuja—The National Vice Chairman (North West) of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Garba Muhammad, has cautioned former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and ex-governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, to tread softly ahead of the 2027 general election.

Muhammad, who hails from Kaduna State and served as a member of the House of Representatives, representing Sabon Gari federal constituency for 16 years, had in an open letter, told Atiku to “perish the thought of another presidential contest” and remain the statesman he was, noting that he had been contesting for the presidency since 1993.

Muhammad said: “As we approach the next general elections, you are at it again. However, this time around, having sensed that your party, the PDP, may not cede the presidential ticket to you, you are now considering joining forces with some aggrieved politicians to form a coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
“For you, Alhaji Atiku, our former vice president, my free-hearted advice is, in your best interest and the interest of Nigerians, it is better you drop the idea of contesting for president in 2027, by which time you would have already turned 80 years.

“The Wazirin Adamawa, you should rather remain the elder statesman that you currently are. Methinks you shouldn’t waste your time and resources. At least, you should take your cue from another former Vice President, Arc. Muhammad Namadi Sambo, who has been operating in the background and remains an elder statesman since he left office in 2015.”

Muhammad said Atiku should not listen to some politicians, such as former Kaduna governor, El-rufai who “are dangling the carrot of a coalition” to him ahead of 2027.

“In truth, even if you contest, you have nothing new to offer. Remember, you are also a proponent of subsidy removal. It is on record that, as vice president, you spearheaded the privatisation of some key national assets when you chaired the committee on privatisation during Obasanjo’s administration, while former Governor El-rufai was the Director General of the Bureau for Public Privatization, BPP.”

To el-rufai, the APC chieftain, who is also the chairman of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, Governing Board, he urged the former Kaduna State governor to reconcile with the APC since he was a founding member of the party who toiled to see its success.

The former lawmaker said: “It is on record that you were part of the founding members of the APC. Having worked for the party tirelessly and served as governor under its platform for eight years, it is rather worrisome that you decided to leave APC at this critical point.

“While still serving as governor in 2022, during one of your media chats, you averred that “the moment I leave APC, then I have quit politics altogether.” At this critical point, you should ponder and reconcile with the APC or quit politics altogether.

“The world knows that it was you who announced that you were not interested in any position in the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. Why should you turn to a critic overnight just because you perceived things were not going your way when you had unfettered access to the leadership of the party and the president?”
“As someone who was once close to you, I want to advise you to refrain from using emotions, sentiments and unsubstantiated claims/allegations in politics.

“I would like to tell you for free that no PDP governor will join the SDP because their party already has a structure on ground. Who will leave certainty to uncertainty? You may end up committing a serious political miscalculation.

“Frankly speaking, I think you should reflect deeply. One would expect that as a leading figure who supported the presidency to go to the South in 2023, you would support the zone to finish its eight years before canvassing for the rotation of the position to the north.”

He said both Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and Governor Uba Sani had been working assiduously and harmoniously for the benefit of Kaduna State.

“Governor Uba Sani’s leadership style also attracted the likes of former governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero; Senator Danjuma Laah; Senator Caleb Zegi; former PDP national organising secretary, Abubakar Mustapha; Amb. Sule Buba; Prof. Dogara Mato; member representing Zangon Kataf/Jaba federal constituency, Amos Magaji Gwamna, and the member for Igabi federal constituency, Hussaini Jalo, among others.

“We enjoy relative peace in Kaduna State today due to the kind of inclusive leadership of Governor Uba Sani, especially the rural areas,’’ he added

He stated further that the North West had never had it this good under any administration, saying “currently in the North-West, we have speaker of the House of Representatives from Kaduna State and the Deputy President of the Senate from Kano State.

‘’It has never happened in the history of Nigeria where two presiding officers of the National Assembly came from the same zone. We also have the national chairman of our great party from Kano State.

“Additionally, the North West also got 12 ministerial appointments, some of whom are manning critical ministries, such as the two ministers of defence; budget and national planning; environment; two ministers of housing; culture and creative economy; ministers of state for FCT, education and works etcetera.

‘’The zone also has the two service chiefs – the chief of defence staff from Kaduna State, and the chief of air staff from Kano State.’’

  • Ibas appoints administrators for 23 Rivers LGs, amid legal, political tensions

Ibas appoints administrators for 23 Rivers LGs, amid legal, political tensions

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has approved the appointment of administrators for the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, alongside the reconstitution of previously suspended boards of agencies, commissions, and parastatals.

The appointments take effect from Monday, April 7, 2025.

The approval was contained in a Special Government Announcement issued on Wednesday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Worika.

This development comes amid mounting legal and political tensions in the state, with a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt having earlier barred Ibas from making such appointments.

Justice Adamu Turaki Mohammed issued an interim injunction in Suit No. FHC/PH/CS/46/2025, filed by PILEX Centre for Civic Education Initiative led by Courage Msirimovu. The order restrains the Sole Administrator and his agents from appointing sole administrators—under any designation—to oversee the LGAs. The court granted the motion ex parte filed on March 28, and has fixed April 14 for a substantive hearing.

The appointments are the latest twist in a protracted political power tussle in Rivers State, which has intensified since the expiration of the tenure of local council chairmen originally elected under former Governor Nyesom Wike. Though their terms ended in June 2023, the chairmen secured what they described as a term extension from 27 defected lawmakers loyal to Wike.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who succeeded Wike, had dissolved the councils and appointed caretaker chairmen, triggering a fierce contest for control of the local government structures—widely regarded as critical to grassroots political dominance.

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) went on to conduct local government elections on October 5, 2024. However, the Wike-aligned faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Tony Okocha, challenged the process in court. Despite the litigation, the elections proceeded.

Following a Supreme Court ruling on February 28, 2025, which sided with the Wike-backed APC, Governor Fubara nullified the results and directed heads of local council administrations to assume control until fresh elections are held. This move further escalated the crisis, prompting legal threats and political backlash from the Wike camp.

Amid the chaos, Fubara’s supporters have accused Ibas of attempting to sidestep constitutional provisions by appointing administrators to the LGAs without lawful backing—an action now under judicial scrutiny.

The unfolding crisis continues despite the declaration of a state of emergency in the state by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 18, aimed at restoring order. With the court hearing scheduled for next week and political factions refusing to back down, the Rivers political drama appears far from over.

Ezenwafo emerges Anambra PDP governorship flag bearer

Chief Jude Ezenwafo, an Abuja-based real estate developer, has emerged as the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the upcoming November 8, 2025, Anambra state governorship election.

Leader of the PDP national committee mandated to conduct the party’s governorship primary, Col. Chijioke Onwubuya (rtd), declared Ezenwafor winner in the governorship primary election held on Tuesday at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka.

Ezenwafor contested for the PDP governorship ticket unopposed, as he was the only aspirant who purchased the party’s nomination form for the governorship primary election.

A total of 853 delegates were 839 elected from the 21 local government chapters of the party in the state and 14 national delegates were accredited to participate in the election.

Though Ezenwafor was the lone contestant, each delegate was issued a ballot paper to write the name of the candidate they voted for. The delegates cast their votes for local government, while the national delegates were the first to cast their ballots.

Edo APC chairman tasks INEC on legislative bye-elections

BENIN CITY – The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, Jarret Tenebe, has issued an ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding the immediate conduct of bye-elections to fill two vacant legislative seats in the state.

In a statement issued in Benin City, Tenebe condemned what he described as the “unjustifiable delay” in conducting the elections, warning that constituents in the affected areas have been left without representation for over three months.

“The people of Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia North East/South West Federal Constituency have been without proper representation for three months now. This is against the spirit and letters of our constitution and democratic norms,” he said.

The vacancies arose following the resignation of Senator Monday Okpebholo, who stepped down from the Edo Central Senatorial seat to contest in the governorship election, and Honourable Dennis Idahosa, who vacated his position as the representative of Ovia North East/South West Federal Constituency.

Tenebe urged INEC to act swiftly, suggesting that if the Commission is financially incapable of organizing the bye-elections, it should consider transferring the responsibility to the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).

“If INEC is financially incapacitated or lacks the will to conduct these elections, then they should cede the responsibility to the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC). The people cannot continue to be denied their right to representation,” he said.

He further stressed that the continued delay not only disenfranchises the constituents but also undermines the democratic process.

“This inaction sends a wrong message. It undermines the very essence of democracy, which thrives on representation and participation,” Tenebe added.

  • Ndume knocks Tinubu over lopsided federal appointments

Ndume knocks Tinubu over lopsided federal appointments

Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (APC Borno South) has kicked against lopsidedness in federal or political appointments by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which, according to him, has favoured one section or ethnic group, contrary to the dictates of the Federal Character guidelines.

Ndume said he was shocked when he read the endless and sectional list of federal political appointees which have gone viral in social media or public space, describing the situation as non-inclusive and not reflecting the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of Mr President, who has took an Oath of Office and that of allegiance, that sort to carry everybody along while discharging any responsibility as government.

Ndume stated this on Arise News (Prime Time) yesterday, which was monitored by our correspondent.

He pointed out that as a lawmaker, and based on his observation, President Tinubu’s appointments so far violated federal character and should be corrected.

The senator, who is a member of the ruling APC, has always been vocal and a critic, especially on some government policies and programmes allegedly not in favour of the Nigerian masses and the electorate.

Responding to a question on the list of political appointees by Mr President, which is in circulation and in favour of one ethnic group, Ndume said, “Well, I don’t think I have anything to add, because the figures are there; you can look at it; I sent you all. It is not that I am making accusations or saying that Mr President does not have the right to make appointments, but Section 14/3 of the Constitution is very clear. When you look at it vis-à-vis the appointments made so far, they are political appointments.

“If appointments that are professional, so to say, like you can’t appoint someone who is not a soldier to become Chief of Army Staff, or you can’t appoint someone who is not a police officer to become the Inspector General of Police, IGP, but then, when you come to look at political appointments, the Constitution, as I said earlier, is very clear, and it is because to avoid such infractions that the constitution of Section 14/3 states that political appointments should reflect the Federal Character….., which is not the case here.

“All I am saying is to call the attention of Mr President to such infractions so that they can be corrected; otherwise, this thing can boomerang at a certain period of time. Just like you said, people look at me as somebody that is critical of the government, but I have the right to do that because that is why I am elected as a legislator at the National Assembly in the first place.

“Collectively, we are supposed to oversee the acts of Mr President and point out some of the irregularities. This is what we swore to do. It is not personal, because if you count five people in the North that have a personal relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I (Ndume) am one of them. But that does not stop me from saying the truth, because I have the obligation to do that in the interest of all Nigerians.

“As a Nigerian and a lawmaker, I have the right to voice this out, but Tinubu’s attack dogs will attack me, not the message. It is not personal, as I said, especially now that everybody will stand before God Almighty and account for his/her own stewardship as leaders. It is unfortunate that after this interaction, these so-called Tinubu Boys or people will start attacking Ndume, saying he is a very frustrating person,” Ndume said.
