NNPP Crisis: Kwankwaso’s group rejects emergence of Agbo Major as Chairman

ABUJA- THE National Working Committee, NWC of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP has rejected the convention that led to Dr. Agbo Major’s emergence as the party’s new National Chairman, describing him as a product of a beer parlour meeting.

According to NNPP, the convention was illegitimate and that Dr Ajuji Ahmed remains the only recognised National Chairman of the party.

Addressing Journalists yesterday the party’s National Headquarters, Abuja, the NNPP National Chairman, Dr. Ajuji Ahmed who boasted that the party does not have Sleepless nights following the actions of the other group, said that the party is intact, contended, firmly rooted and satisfied with the state of the party that is preparing to win the 2027 Presidential Election, just as he said that the party was opened to Coalition, as its leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso was free to hold meetings with political party, groups or individuals.

Ahmed who is leading the NNPP that is loyal to 2023 NNPP Presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, said that it is clearly against the law, and against common decency, for any group under the guise of any identity different from what the party stands for to refer to itself as NNPP, just as he stressed that the NNPP did not have any National Convention in recent times, meaning that no NWC was inaugurated any new NWC, adding that the current NNPP NWC was constituted in the year 2022 under the supervision of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, 2022.

Ahmed said, “This same hired and sponsored emergency collection of characters gathered themselves in Lagos three days ago in the name of NNPP to hold a ludicrous charade of tipsy comedians, when a Court of competent jurisdiction in Abuja on gave a clear and unmistakable injunction against them not to hold that meeting. They defied the court ruling and went ahead to hold a beer parlour meeting in a hotel lobby which they now called National Convention.

“We want to use this medium to inform and confirm to the world that the NNPP does not operate from Apapa, we did not hold any convention this year in any hotel lobby in Lagos. Visit the INEC website and confirm for yourselves that our Party is never chaired by a Major (serving or retired) or a Dr. Major or an Agbo

Major Dr, or whatever. Our NWC was inaugurated here in Abuja in April 2022 for a tenure of four years which ends in April 2026, and it is here in Abuja that our Party is Headquartered and operates from in accordance with the laws of the land.”

Recall that on Tuesday last week, the Dr Boniface Aniebonam led faction of the party elected Dr Agbo Major as the new National Chairman of NNPP.

The convention, which was held on Tueday was attended by delegates and officers of the party at national and state levels.

Besides Agbo, other elected officers were Oginni Olaposi, National Secretary; Chief Felix Chukwurah, Deputy National Chairman (South); Mr Adetoyese Omokanye, National Treasurer; Alhaji Babayo Muhammed, Deputy National Chairman (North); and Abdulrasaq Abdulsallam as National Publicity Secretary.

The delegates also elected Hajia Aisha Kade as National Woman Leader, Chief Edward Ofomona as National Youth Leader, and Omolara Johnson as National Organising Secretary, among others.

Ahmed’s text read, “We, as a Political Party, would have wanted to ignore recent developments concerning this Party, except for the open assualt on the integrity of the Party and the psyche of Nigerians, by some sponsored elements posing as members and leaders of the Party. This Press Conference, therefore, is aimed at presenting the true state of affairs in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

“I wish to start by acknowledging the presence in our midst today of our NNPP members of the National Assembly led by our Distinguished Ranking Senator Rufa’i Hanga. They are at the National Headquarters of our Party on a solidarity visit, and also as part of the regular consultation between our elected representatives on the platform of the Party and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Party.

“Let me at this juncture inform you, and through you inform the world that there is only one NNPP under the leadership of my humble self as its National Chairman, and this NWC, with this building as the National Headquarters of the Party known to law and to the regulating agency for political parties in Nigeria, i.e. the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Furthermore, the only logo of the NNPP that is known to law is the one with Red, White, Red colours with a book and academic cap in the middle, with the slogan EDUCATION FOR ALL. A visit to the INEC Website will confirm all this information.

“Against the background of all these, it is clearly against the law, and against common decency, for any group under the guise of any identity different from what I have enumerated above, to refer to itself as NNPP. For this reason, therefore, the NNPP did not have any National Convention in recent times and so we did not

inaugurate any new National Working Committee (NWC). The current NNPP NWC was constituted in the year 2022 under the supervision of INEC as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act, 2022.

“Let me quickly touch on the game some of these former members of this Party are playing, prodded on by some politicians who are scared of the opposition, because they are afraid of their own shadows as we march towards the 2027 elections.

“Immediately after the 2023 general elections, some members of this Party who openly played anti-party activities were subjected to proper disciplinary procedures and were found wanting. They were duly sanctioned, but instead of exploring the internal mechanisms put in place by the Party to address their grievances, they decided to release themselves as willing tools to outsiders in order to distract the attention of the Party. They have been jumping from pillar to post, going from one court to the other, and swiftly losing one case after another, in practically every corner of the country. They have been to, and lost, in courts in Abuja, Ekiti, Port Harcourt, Awka, Kano, and Katsina, all the time desperately seeking to mislead the courts and abuse all known court processes. All those have failed.

“In their confusion, in November 2024, they took themselves to Court in Abia State, in the name of NNPP. Meanwhile, an Abuja Federal High Court as far back as April 2024 had ruled that, as expelled former members of the Party, they should stop parading themselves as NNPP members or leaders in any shape or form. The Federal High Court judgment of 18th April, 2024, declared them as impostors, having been expelled by the party, and as such can neither sue in the name of the party nor against the party.

“For the purpose of clarity, on the 16th of January 2025, the High Court of FCT, gave an Order restraining them and their privies, proxies and whosoever from carrying out any official duty or activity for or on behalf of NNPP. The said orders were served on them, they have briefed their lawyers, they have appeared before the courts and filed their processes. Yet with brazen disregard to the orders of the court, the same group have gone ahead to hold this unlawful meeting and have purported to have elected members of a kangaroo National Working Committee. We are in court today 7th February 2025, and INEC has filed their process denying knowledge and existence of the so-called convention in Apapa and the purported election.

“By the provisions of Section 83 of the Electoral Act, INEC must monitor all the activities of all Political Parties in Nigeria and keep records of such activities. By the provisions of Section 222(a) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, it is a condition precedent for the registration and recognition of an association as a political party.

” Your media houses were all represented at the unveiling of our New logo with red white red with a book and an academic cap as well as the new Constitution of our Party which was witnessed by INEC and have been duly approved. Yet, to our dismay some media houses have been parading the old Logo and thereby promoting the mischief and deceit of the renegade group.

We wish to use this medium and for the umpteenth time introduce the authentic and statutorily recognized Logo of NNPP to all of you today. Any further display of a Logo of the NNPP other than this very one is against the law.

“The greatest danger to any democracy is the disregard for the rule of law. When a group of pretentious politicians consistently defies and shows contempt for the rule of law, and openly mocks our judicial system and our courts, you begin to wonder what set of unseen hands is behind the veil pushing them. It must be the same obvious forces that seek to bring chaos and disorder in all other opposition parties in our democracy.

For those same forces, the best case scenario in the lead up to 2027 is the absence of all opposition, knowing full well that 2027 would practically be unsurmountable for them, given the rampant weaponization of hunger and desperation across the land. Be that as it may, history bears witness to the unalterable fact that the true hallmark of a vibrant democracy is a robust opposition. It is this robust opposition the NNPP will continue to represent on behalf of the good people of Nigeria.

” We want to use this medium to inform and confirm to the world that the NNPP does not operate from Apapa, we did not hold any convention this year in any hotel lobby in Lagos. Visit the INEC website and confirm for yourselves that our Party is never chaired by a Major (serving or retired) or a Dr. Major or an Agbo Major Dr, or whatever. Our NWC was inaugurated here in Abuja in April 2022 for a tenure of four yearswhich ends in April 2026, and it is here in Abuja that our Party is Headquartered and operates from in accordance with the laws of the land.”

Obasa: Normalcy returns as Meranda steers affairs of Lagos Assembly

Normalcy has returned to the Lagos State of Assembly as the newly elected Speaker, Mrs Mojisola Meranda gained more support and collaboration of other lawmakers to steer the affairs of the House.

The legislators, yesterday, dismissed as hog-wash rumours of plans to remove
Meranda, has continued to enjoy their overwhelming support since the speakership crisis rocked the Assembly.

It will be recalled that 37 out of 40 members on January 13, 2025 impeached the former speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, as a result of financial misappropriation and abuse of office, and elected Meranda.

The event has generated widespread criticisms from stakeholders within and outside Lagos especially within the political cadre.

However, the crisis was laid to rest through a phone call by President Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

It will be recalled that the House resumed plenary on February 6, 2025 with lawmakers eulogising the administration of President Tinubu and his wife for the various economic policies they introduced to better the lives of the people.

After the plenary on Thursday, the House adjourned sitting to Monday, February 10 at 11am.

Vanguard reliably gathered that the situation in the House is calm as everyone is going about his or her work.

Speaking to some of the people in the Assembly, to feel their pulse of the activities on ground, they said: “The Assembly is peaceful and everyone is working here. The lawmakers are happy. Nobody is causing any problem.

“And you know today is Friday, very soon, the Muslim people would go to Mosque. So, don’t mind people who are spreading rumour of impeaching Madam Speaker.

“In fact, the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda and the Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu went to LTV 8 this morning.”

  • ‘Why Edo APC must not dignify PDP, Ighodalo with any witness’ – Mayaki

‘Why Edo APC must not dignify PDP, Ighodalo with any witness’ – Mayaki

The Chairman of the Edo State Media and Publicity Directorate, APC Presidential Campaign Council in 2023, Mr. John Mayaki, has called on his party not to dignify the PDP and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, with any witnesses in the ongoing governorship election petition tribunal, saying the burden of proof remains with the petitioners.

Mayaki, who hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the stand it took yesterday by not calling any witness, said, “The petitioners should be allowed to prove their case, if there was any. If a man says he has 100 witnesses and only ended up calling only 19, how does that show he is ready to prove his case, and why should another person help them achieve that?” he queried.

Mayaki said he would be glad if the APC takes the same approach as INEC, which didn’t see any reason to call witnesses when the petitioners have not provided enough evidence to prove their case against the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo as duly elected governor of Edo State.

His words: “There are precedents, and I think we should learn from them. For instance, in the 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenged the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 23, 2019, presidential election, but INEC opted not to call any witnesses.

“Similarly, in the same tribunal, the APC, as a respondent, also chose not to call any witnesses in its defense. The party’s legal team decided to rely on the cross-examination of the petitioners’ witnesses and the evidence already presented, concluding that it was sufficient to defend their case without introducing additional testimony.

“In the 2016 Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, the PDP and its candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu, filed a petition challenging the declaration of Godwin Obaseki as the winner, but INEC did not call any witnesses in its defense, with its counsel, Mr. Onyebuchi Ikpeazu, citing that the burden of proof remained with the petitioners and that the evidence presented did not necessitate a response from INEC.

“Also, in the 2023 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, President Bola Tinubu, through his legal team, indicated plans to call 39 witnesses to defend his election victory but ended up calling only one, which was the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele. That was how the president closed his case, while the APC didn’t even dignify Peter Obi and Atiku with any witness. And I think Edo State APC should look in this direction too,” Mayaki advised.

  • APC has no prospects in Delta, says Okwagbe

APC has no prospects in Delta, says Okwagbe

A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Delta State , Olorogun Okiemute Okwagbe, has said the All Progressives Congress, APC, should accept the dominance of PDP in the state, saying it doesn’t have prospects in Delta.
He also said former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, lacks the political weight to challenge Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Okwagbe, who said this in a statement, said PDP is firmly in control in the state, adding that APC has no foundation in Delta.
His words:” The APC has no bearing in Delta State. Deltans have experienced realistic progress under the PDP and they know very well the stagnation that the APC represents. Omo-Agege should stop misleading the people and accept the historical political dominance of the PDP in Delta State.
“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is fully on the ground, working tirelessly for Deltans. The difference between a leader who delivers and one who only talks is clear for all to see.
“Governor Oborevwori’s administration has been implementing impactful policies, earning him prestigious recognitions, like The ThisDay Newspaper and Arise Television Best Governor of the Year Award and the conferment of Honorary doctorate degree on him by the Novena University.
“On the contrary, Omo-Agege’s attempts to position himself as a viable alternative have been exposed as a mere political grandstanding. This is why Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will continue to enjoy overwhelming support from the people, as he remains focused on delivering tangible dividends of democracy to the people under the the instrumentality of the MORE AGENDA.
“As Delta State’s political landscape evolves, one thing remains certain—the PDP remains firmly in control while the APC, with its dwindling influence, remains a greenhorn. Omo-Agege is fighting a lost political battle. “

StandWithMeranda: Women’s groups rally support for Lagos speaker

Two prominent women’s groups, Women for Good Governance in Lagos State and the Coalition of Professional Women in Politics, COPWIP, Women leaders and advocates for gender equality have declared their unalloyed support for the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda.

The groups also called on stakeholders to protect and uphold women’s representation in leadership.

The groups made the remarks at a press media in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday.

The event ended with a resounding declaration of support for Meranda’s leadership, with participants rallying around the hashtag #StandWithMeranda to amplify their message.

COPWIP praised Meranda’s groundbreaking achievement and urged all stakeholders to support her leadership.

Speaking at the event, Fatee Mohammed, convener of Women for Good Governance, described Meranda’s emergence as a historic milestone for women in politics and a testament to the evolving democratic landscape in Lagos State.

According to Muhammed: “For decades, women have played pivotal roles in governance, often behind the scenes. Today, we celebrate a woman who has broken barriers, defied stereotypes, and risen to our state’s legislative leadership pinnacle.

“Leadership thrives on collective effort, and we must all play our part to ensure a successful tenure for our Speaker. This is not just a celebration; it is a call to action for more female participation in governance.”

She highlighted Meranda’s dedication to progressive policies, social welfare, and women and youth empowerment, emphasizing that her leadership would bring dynamic and people-centered legislation to the Lagos Assembly.

Also, Dr. Atinuke Wuraola Owolabi, President of COPWIP, underscored the significance of Meranda’s position, warning that any attempt to remove her would be a major setback for women’s representation in governance.

“Mojisola Meranda has made history, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in leadership. Her removal would not only be a personal loss but also a setback for our progress in political inclusion,” Owolabi stated.

Calling for collective action to defend women’s leadership, Owolabi urged President Tinubu to intervene and ensure Meranda’s tenure remains uninterrupted.

“Women’s leadership must not be undermined. We must stand together to affirm that women deserve to be seen, heard, and respected in leadership,” she maintained.

Obasa absent as Lagos lawmakers pledge loyalty, support for Tinubu’s govt

Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have expressed unalloyed support and loyalty to President Bola Tinubu for impressive achievements so far on the Renewed Hope Agenda, performance as Lagos State Governor, and improving the nation’s socioeconomic fortune.

The lawmakers also pledged their loyalty to the President for his political leadership in Lagos.

This is coming at the resumed plenary of the assembly barely a month after the former Speaker, Mr Mudashiru Obasa, was removed as Speaker of the House, but the embattled ex-speaker was conspicuously absent at the plenary.

This followed a motion on Thursday, under Personal Explanation by the lawmaker representing Epe Constituency I, Mr Abiodun Tobun, during plenary.

He noted that the cost of living had reduced, while the naira had appreciated against the dollar due to the government’s impactful policies.

Tobun, who noted that there was room for improvement, said there was also the need to commend the President for making bold decisions to fix the economy.

The members took turns reeling out various achievements by the Tinubu administration and political sagacity in Lagos, in particular, and Nigeria, in general.

The assembly member representing Eti Osa Constituency II, Mr Gbolahan Yishawu, contributed, saying the President’s economic policies were apt and successful.

Yishawu also commended the First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, for supporting the President and initiating the policy to encourage homegrown farming.

In a remark, the Majority Leader of the House, Mr Temitope Adewale, said every member of the state assembly owes their allegiance to President Tinubu, whom he said groomed him, other lawmakers and many other politicians.

Other lawmakers listed some of the President’s laudable policies, including the removal of the fuel subsidy, the provision of student loans, the new national minimum wage and a reduction in the debt-to-income ratio.

Before ruling on the motion, the Speaker of the House, Mrs Mojisola Meranda, commended Tinubu and their wife for their exemplary leadership quality.

Subsequently, the House resolved to write the President to express members’ loyalty and commend him for his courageous leadership in the country.

  • El-Rufai wouldn’t have been gov without Buhari factor – Bwala

El-Rufai wouldn’t have been gov without Buhari factor – Bwala

Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has claimed that Nasir El-Rufai could not have been governor of Kaduna State without riding on the popularity of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

“There is a dynamic around El-Rufai. El-Rufai needed a solid revolutionary person to thrive. On his own, El-Rufai may not win the Senate,” Bwala said during an interview on TVC News on Thursday.

“He won governorship because of the Buhari factor and got re-elected because of the Buhari factor. If you leave him now to go and run for Senate in Kaduna, he would not win.”

El-Rufai has been critical of the Tinubu administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) despite being a member of the party. He is rumoured to be considering forming a coalition to defeat Tinubu in 2027 although El-Rufai earlier said he had no plan to leave the APC.

Bwala said Tinubu was not losing sleep over the ex-governor’s criticisms.

“El-Rufai, as he said, is still in APC. You treat him like a brother. I know his grandstanding. I know he is having some trouble finding a path,” he said.

“If you leave a governing party, which you have influence, and think that you can undertake a mission, you have to have a place that is working to do that.

“He does not have the capacity to make the president unsettled. No opposition party, even if combined, can make the president unsettled.”

Bwala dismissed the threat of the opposition to upstage the Tinubu administration: “There is no organised political party in Nigeria other than APC. Almost all opposition parties are trying to find their way.”

Ned Nwoko became Senator through Okowa, Oborevwori credibility – Ossai

Delta State Governor Senior Special Assistant On Media Mr. Ossai Ovie Success, has slammed Senator Ned Nwoko over his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Ossai, Senator Nwoko’s claims about Governor Sheriff Oborevwori are false and misleadingOssai stated that Senator Nwoko rode on the coattails of Senator Okowa and Governor Oborevwori to become a senator, but has now turned against them.

He described Senator Nwoko’s actions as ungrateful and deceitful.

Ossai said one of the false claims made by Senator Nwoko,  is that Governor Oborevwori refused to fund the Okpai Independent Power Plant (IPP) project. However, Ossai revealed that the project is under federal jurisdiction and has been completed since 2005. The Okpai IPP is a 480-megawatt power plant that was designed to generate power for the national grid.

Ossai also debunked Senator Nwoko’s claim about the inactivity of the Ogwashi-Uku dam, stating that the project is also under federal jurisdiction and has not been handed over to the state government.

He noted that Senator Nwoko had previously announced that the Federal Government would formally hand over the dam to the Delta State government, but this has not yet occurred.

“In contrast to Senator Nwoko’s false claims, Ossai highlighted Governor Oborevwori’s numerous achievements in developing Delta North. These include over 150 ongoing projects, allocation of ₦2 billion for each local government on road infrastructure, and empowerment programs for youths. Some of the specific projects mentioned by Ossai include the construction of the Kwale-Beneku bridge, the rehabilitation of several roads in Asaba, and the completion of the Ugbolu Onwuka road and Ogbotobor Avenue.

“Oborevwori has kept his campaign promises, unlike Senator Nwoko, who has been accused of failing to deliver on his promises to his constituents. He emphasized that Governor Oborevwori’s administration has been transparent and accountable, with a focus on merit-based governance”.Ossai urged Senator Nwoko to focus on lobbying the Federal Government to complete abandoned projects in Delta State rather than spreading falsehoods about the governor.
