Niger Delta leaders meet Tinubu today

Niger Delta Leaders under the auspices of the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, are expected to have an interactive session with President Bola Tinubu this morning at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

PANDEF, convened by the elder statesman, Senator Edwin Clark, who died last month is the mouthpiece of the traditional rulers, leaders, and stakeholders of the coastal states of the Niger Delta.

After meeting with President Tinubu, the leaders will meet later in the afternoon with the Senate President, Senator Goodwill Akpabio, and National Assembly members from the South-South.

Former Governors of old Rivers State, and Akwa-Ibom State, HRM Alfred Diete-Spiff and Obong Victor Attach are co-Chairmen of Board of Trustees, BoT, of the regional body.

A former federal permanent secretary and erudite diplomat, Ambassador Godknows Igali is the National Chairman of PANDEF.

A top member of the group confided in Vanguard: “We (leaders of PANDEF) had an expanded NEC meeting at the Transcorp Abuja yesterday (Monday).

“We shall have an interactive session with Mr President at the Villa this morning. Later in the afternoon we shall meet with the Senate President and all National Assembly members from the South South.”

PDP will return to power in 2027, says Tambuwal

SOKOTO: Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator, Aminu Tambuwal (Mutawallen Sokoto), has promised that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will reclaim its mandate from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

He made this statement on Monday during the flag-off of the Ramadan package distribution to the people of Sokoto State.

Tambuwal emphasised that the Ramadan assistance programme is aimed at benefiting over 30,000 households across the state. This initiative is in addition to the thousands of other food items and multiple forms of support provided by PDP lawmakers at both the state and federal levels.

These efforts are geared toward alleviating the hardships faced by citizens, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

The former governor further revealed that PDP lawmakers in the state and at the national level have initiated the distribution of thousands of bags of rice and other essential grains to youth and women-led organisations, aiming to ease their fasting during this sacred period.

“We must recognise the grace of Allah for being alive to witness another Ramadan, despite the many lives lost,” Tambuwal said. “We continue to pray for good health and longevity so that we may celebrate many more blessed months of Ramadan. I also want to take this moment to express my gratitude to our party chairman and the leaders of our party for their tireless efforts in organising and mobilising the people, ensuring that our party remains strong and united in Sokoto.”

Tambuwal reiterated the importance of unity within the party, emphasising that the PDP is a “united family” dedicated to reclaiming what was lost in the previous elections. He claimed that the PDP’s mandate was “forcefully stolen” in the last election, but assured that the party is already restructuring and strategising to take back what rightfully belongs to it.

“By the grace of Allah, what was taken from us will be returned in 2027,” Tambuwal assured the gathering.

Earlier in the event, the Chairman of the PDP in Sokoto State, Bello Goronyo, expressed his heartfelt appreciation to all party members in Sokoto for their unwavering support and faith in the PDP. He stressed that the party remains the only one that truly cares about the welfare of the Nigerian people.

Goronyo highlighted the current hardships faced by Nigerians, which he argued were nonexistent during the PDP’s time in power. He called on the people of Sokoto and all Nigerians to liberate themselves from what he described as the “mis-governance” of the APC in the upcoming 2027 elections.

  • Rivers crisis: Why Fubara may survive impeachment

Rivers crisis: Why Fubara may survive impeachment

Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan made an iconic quote that has since gone into
the political lexicon of the country’s history: “My political ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian”. It presupposes that Jonathan would rather not pursue his ambition if such would lead to any violence.

In the heat of the Boko Haram terror attacks, Jonathan also came up with yet another assertion that he had not used one tenth of his power. This forced many to ask, why crave for political position if you can’t exert the power thereof? Jonathan did not last in the office as President. He was booted out. He is an Ijaw man of Niger Delta extraction.

Rivers state, Siminalayi Fubara does not need to speak out that he does not need to use one tenth of his constitutional power as governor. The world has seen it all. And it is counted for him as weakness, hence the escalation of crisis in the state.

Years before his death, former petroleum minister, Professor Tam David West had once described Jonathan as “the weakest President” Nigeria ever produced. But Rivers people have since come to acquiesce themselves with the fact that the leadership of government in Rivers state is taking shade under the tree of weakness while professing the path of peace. And the peace is pyrrhic.

Pundits have averred that since October 29, 2023 when the crisis began in the state with the threat of impeachment, Governor Fubara failed to exert his power and nib it in the bud once and for all. While he keeps hoping that there would be a political solution some day, the opposition was swinging from post to post looking for where to nail him . They appear to be succeeding from recent developments especially with the recent Supreme Court ‘5-0’ judgment.

    Lack Of Consultation

Sources within government circle in the state had informed that the governor would rather choose to carry the gauntlet alone without any botheration. The source noted that the man in the Bricks House does not care about some of the elders who stick out their necks to fight for his political survival. “Even a governor of a nearby state would call him, the man would not answer. He does not relate well with the leadership of the ethnic nationalities in the region who are solidly behind him in this fight”.

Governor Fubara knows that there is a bigger masquerade behind the Minister of the federal capital territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, stoking the fire of crisis in the state. He knows the masquerade would not listen to him for obvious reasons. But there are distinguished Nigerians like former President Olusegun Obasanjo, General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto among others. But “Oga will not want to consult anybody”, he said.

He went on to reveal that “even when Papa Edwin Clarke was alive, am not sure Oga visited him one day despite the late man’s stout defence of his government”. The Governor chooses to surround himself with political feather weights who cannot rise up when occasion calls. They are supporters of the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. In 2023 these men were chased out of Rivers state to Abuja by Wike. When the table turned, Wike moved to Abuja as a minister while they returned to Port Harcourt to pitch tent with Fubara. Nothing to offer.

    Miserly

Governor Fubara is known to be “a nice man”. Another source put it this way: “Fubara is generous. However, this generosity does not seem to reflect or show in the politics of the state. The governor has reportedly said that the revenue of the state is to develop Rivers for the betterment of the people. This is good. We support him for that. But he is fighting a survival battle and he needs to fight. Until lately, he was not doing that. The Supreme Court judgment appears to have woken him up. But how far can he go? He has lost huge grounds.’

A member of the Elders Council in Rivers state had rebuked the governor for being “too stingy with money”. According to him, “last Christmas, not even a grain of rice from this government despite our support for him. Whatever we are doing, we are not doing it because of Fubara but for Rivers state. We like peace and not war”.

    Peace Moves

A prominent retired Army officer from the north was said to have sent emissaries to the Governor to broker peace in the state. He turned it down. Though the man’s move was predicated on his interest in the oil well in Rivers, many northerners would definitely love to side with Fubara in the ongoing political quagmire just to spite Wike who is seen as Tinubu’s strongest man in the south-south region.

“Yes, the general sent some persons to come to Port Harcourt to meet with the Governor. They could not. Maybe the governor was not willing to receive them. The effort is still on. We believe that he will see the reason to meet with the team and douse tension in the state”, the source said. “The governor appears to have made the fight an Ijaw affair. This is not an Ijaw fight. It is a fight for Rivers people and all lovers of peace and uprightness. This explains why the Governor has to come out firm and establish his authority to prove to all that he is fully in charge of governance in the state”, he said.

Nevertheless, Comrade Franklin Ntekim believes that Governor Fubara’s mien disposition should not be taken for docility. “I believe that it is his own strategy. If you look at it clearly, the governor had been winning the war until the Supreme Court came out with that controversial judgment. He is not weak but a very calculative person”.

Countering Franklin’s position, a social commentator, Comrade Gregory Akpan fumed that if it was not a sign of weakness or fear “how come the Governor had five consolidated cases in the Supreme Court and he could put up any fight and he lost them all. The courts are operated by human beings. Did his men fight to present quality and sound arguments and make noise against possible injustice that is common in our system?”

    Double Ultimatum

Arising from the Supreme Court judgment which reinstated them as the “valid” members of the House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule and the 26 other lawmakers on Monday ordered the Governor to present the 2025 budget before the House within 48 hours.

That ultimatum expired on Wednesday midnight only for another ultimatum to sack all Commissioners and political appointees who were not screened and confirmed by Amaewhule within another 48 hours. The House ordered the Governor to forward another list of nominees to the Assembly for proper screening to fill all vacant positions in the state executive council.

Governor Fubara had since denied ever seeing any letter asking him to present the budget. In a letter by the secretary to the state government, SSG, Dr Tammy Danagogo, the Governor said such letter was never brought to his office, hence, he could not respond to anything in social media space.

The two quick ultimatums issued out by Amaewhule are an indication that the House was in a hurry to get the Governor impeached. The battle line is now drawn. Interesting events are expected to unfold as the days go by.

    Support Base

Governor Fubara has been enjoying a robust support since the political fight between him and Wike broke out in 2023. The show of solidarity has never been because of the moves by the governor but largely because of their interest in the state. Such groups as the pan Niger Delta Elders Forum, PANDEF, Ijaw national Congress, INC, Ijaw Youth Council, IYC and many more are solidly behind the Governor. President of INC, Professor Benjamin Okaba in his recent press statement warned on dire consequences if Fubara is impeached by the pro-Wike lawmakers.

The leadership of IYC from the eastern zone said “the purported 48-hour ultimatum issued to the Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, by the defected Martins Amawhule-led House of Assembly to present the 2025 budget is a clear indication of an orchestrated effort to create chaos and potentially impeach the governor. This is not only an attack on our leadership but also an affront to the will of the Rivers people who have entrusted their governance to one of our own.

“The IYC firmly warns that we will not stand by and allow detractors to steal this mandate. We are committed to defending our rights and ensuring that the voices of the Ijaw people are heard and respected”.

INC on its part recalled that “In 2003, when Marshall Harry backed Sergeant Awuse’s governorship ambition, it was not Awuse but Harry himself who was assassinated, marking a painful loss for the Ijaw people. By 2007, Ijaw leaders such as Soboma George and Farrah Dagogo played a decisive role in securing victory for Sir Celestine Omehia, while Prince Igodo, a Kalabari-Ijaw warlord, was killed during Omehia’s swearing-in to prevent security breaches”.

He went on to recall that “in 2011, when Rotimi Amaechi sought to nominate Pastor Tonye Cole as a minister, Dame Patience Jonathan, the wife of then-President Goodluck Jonathan, ensured that Nyesom Wike took the slot instead”. The INC lamented that despite these consistent sacrifices by the Ijaw people, an Ikwerre political elite now seeks to frustrate the first riverine governor in decades.

The body stated that the Ijaw people will defend Governor Fubara “with every pint of blood in their veins”, emphasizing that they would not stand by and allow their long-awaited tenure to be truncated.

Prof. Okaba also cautioned that while the INC has worked tirelessly to preserve peace in the Niger Delta, leading to increased oil production and revenue for the nation, regrettably, the same resources are now being used to marginalize the Ijaw people.

Issuing a direct warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the INC insisted that the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State must not be treated as ordinary politicking. Prof. Okaba stressed that the Ijaw people, numbering over 40 million worldwide, would not tolerate any attempt to undermine their place in the Nigerian politics.

He further stated that while it enjoins Governor Fubara to, in the spirit of sportsmanship, work with all duly constituted arms of government in the State, “if Governor Fubara’s tenure is truncated by the Amaewhule-led Assembly or anybody else, the INC cannot guarantee the sustenance of the current peace in the Niger Delta, nor the continued rise in oil production.

    Division Among Ijaws

Meanwhile, there appears to be a sharp division among the Ijaws following a recent call by the Rivers rescue Movement, RRM, rebuking the utterances of the IYC and INC leadership over the crisis in the state.

This is as the leadership of the group after an extensive deliberations with Ijaw leaders expressed sadness over the recent statements credited to the President of INC, Prof Benjamin Okaba, Chief Sara Igbe, Alhaji Asari Dokubo and some leaders of IYC. Speaking to a cross section of journalist the secretary of RRM said for them as a group those statements were not only reckless, thoughtless and provocative but also a grave threat to national security and peaceful coexistence.

“As a group that stand for peace, justice and a united Nigeria, we believe no individual or organization has the monopoly of violence, so we are calling on the Nigerian Security agencies to arrest these individuals or any other person or group that will threaten the Nigerian State, it’s economy or people.

“RRM is wondering if the purveyors of these message of destruction or economic sabotage are more Ijaws than the 9 grateful Rivers State House of Assembly members from the IJAW extraction that have been maltreated, humiliated and denied all their allowances by the Gov Fubara administration for over a year when no court had declared their seats vacant?

“RRM want to make it clear that we run a constitutional democracy guided by laws and the highest court of the land (The Supreme Court) has spoken and Gov Fubara is bound to obey the ruling. Furthermore, the public is hereby advised to disregard their empty, watery and old fashioned threat because the laws of Nigeria is always supreme”, the group said in a statement.

    Why Fubara May Survive Impeachment

Every impeachment takes place in line with the constitution. With 27 lawmakers, it will be a very easy process to vote for all the impeachable offences committed by the Governor. But where the process will likely get stuck is when the Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi would be called upon to set up a 7-man panel to investigate those offences.

Being a very principled man who is said to be neutral and “a decent gentleman”, people doubt if the CJ could be compromised.

  • Regularise employment of workers earning N10,000 monthly salary, NLC tells Gov Eno

Regularise employment of workers earning N10,000 monthly salary, NLC tells Gov Eno

UYO – NIGERIA Labour Congress (NLC) has urged Governor Umo Eno to fulfill his promise to regularise the employment of several casual workers engaged by Akwa Ibom State Government who currently labour for the state on a monthly N10,000 pittance.

The appeal was contained in a communique released weekend from NLC Akwa Ibom chapter First Quarter State Executive Council (SEC) Meeting held in Uyo where organised labour also accused Provost of Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, of overstaying his tenure and stirring labour crisis at the institution.

In the communique signs by Elder Sunny James, State Chairman and Alpha Marshall, Secretary, NLC Akwa Ibom reminded Governor Eno on, “His promise to Organized Labour to regularise the appointment of the temporary workers in the Ministries Department and Agencies (MDAs) which some of them are still earning as little as N10,000 a month as earlier submitted to the Government for considerations.”

On looming workers unrest at the Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, NLC State Council, “observed with great disappointment the unfortunate interference of Prof Udo, Provost, in Union activities in the School. The College Staff Handbook stipulates that a ‘Provost shall be appointed for a five (5) year single term and no more’.

“Congress is worried that the tenure of the Provost had elapsed since October, 2024 considering his appointment on 17th October, 2019. The implication therefore is that all communications signed by him after last October had been rendered illegal, null and void in the prevailing circumstances and are hereby expected to be discarded.”

NLC however lauded the governor for successful “successfully implementing a New Minimum Wage of N80,000.00 in the State by paying same in January, 2025 salary, with November and December 2024 arrears.

“SEC-in-Session also commends the Governor for the release of funds for payment of 7.5% Contributory Pension Refunds expected to be in tranches starting January 2025 to the beneficiaries which money was due since 2013.

“SEC further appreciates the Governor for initiating the Staff Verification Exercise with attendant benefits to both the State
    Government and the Organized Labour.

“We urge every worker in the State who have been adversely affected by the exercise to count their gains in their updated service records, employment vacancies that would be created and also encourages the Committee to ensure speedy completion of the exercise on workers yet to receive their January salaries.”

NLC believes the vacancies expected to be created by the state workers verification exercise, preempting exposure and displacement of ghost workers, should afford the governor the window to employ more workers with priority given to regularising the engagement of the state’s numerous casual workers.

Meanwhile Governor Eno in a directive to the Elder Effiong Essien, State Head of Civil Service, has ordered immediate payment of workers whose February salaries have been withheld due to delay posed by the State workers verification exercise.

  • Natasha vs Akpabio: Nigerians won’t forgive 10th senate, if… – CSO

ABUJA – The Advocacy for Integrity and Rule of Law (AIRL) has warned that the Nigerian Senate risks losing public trust and jeopardising the country’s democracy if it fails to manage the controversial suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan with caution.

The group emphasised that the ongoing conflict between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan could tarnish the image and integrity of the upper legislative chamber.

In a statement, AIRL Chairman Mohammed Ibrahim Gamawa urged the Senate to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could deny Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s constituency their right to representation.

The group described the recent confrontations in the Senate and on social media as a ‘show of shame’ that could bring the institution into disrepute.

AIRL further cautioned that if the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is not handled properly, it could escalate into a crisis that undermines Nigeria’s hard-won democracy.

The group reminded the Tenth Senate of its role as representatives of the Nigerian people, warning that failure to resolve the crisis could have lasting consequences for the Senate’s legacy and Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Gamawa stated, “The confrontation between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on the floor of the Senate and on social media is capable of bringing the hollow chamber into ridicule and discredit.

“Nigerians are witnessing the recent and troubling events that unfolded in the Senate, which have opened a Pandora’s box in both local and international media. This can only be described as ‘Dancing Naked in the Marketplace’ by one of the three arms of government.

“We hereby call on the Senate to meet the expectations of keeping the nation united, rather than straying from their primary responsibility of law-making.

“Nigerians will not forgive the Tenth Senate if it continues down this troubling path that may threaten our hard-won democracy.

“We urge our distinguished Senators to reflect on their role, remembering that they are not ordinary citizens but elected representatives of the people.”

  • Why 13 senators did not sign Natasha’s suspension report

Why 13 senators did not sign Natasha’s suspension report

Strong indications have emerged of sharp divisions among Senators over the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) for six months.

Concerns have been raised about the apparent rush by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imaseun (LP, Edo South), in handling the case.

Many Senators, including ranking members, were absent due to a tax reform retreat organized by the Senate Committee on Finance, yet the hearing was moved forward unexpectedly.

A ranking Senator, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, disclosed that the committee had initially scheduled the hearing for Tuesday, March 11, only for it to be abruptly rescheduled. “It was a rushed assignment. Why the hurry? Why didn’t the committee wait? The absence of ranking Senators from the process shows we knew where it was heading,” he said.

He further questioned why the probe proceeded despite a court injunction halting the investigation. “We are lawmakers, and we must follow due process. This was why thirteen of us refused to participate or sign the report.”

The Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan on March 6, 2025, citing a violation of the Senate Standing Rules 2023 (as amended). The suspension came after she protested the reassignment of her seat by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20. The Senate ruled that she had brought the presiding officer and the chamber into public disrepute.

    As part of her suspension:

She is barred from all legislative activities for six months.

Her office will remain locked, and she must return all Senate property.

Her salaries and allowances are suspended.

Security details assigned to her will be withdrawn.

She is prohibited from entering the National Assembly premises.

The committee’s report initially recommended stopping salaries for her legislative aides, but a motion by former Chief Whip Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia North) and seconded by Senator Ned Nwoko (APC, Delta North) ensured they continued receiving payments.

Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) had pleaded for the suspension to be reduced to three months, but his request was rejected.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension stemmed from a heated confrontation in the Senate chamber after discovering her seat reassigned, with her nameplate removed. She demanded an explanation, leading to an intense standoff during plenary.

The Senate has offered to reconsider her suspension if she submits a written apology.

  • Lagos Assembly crisis: LP woos 36 pro-Meranda lawmakers ahead of 2027

Lagos Assembly crisis: LP woos 36 pro-Meranda lawmakers ahead of 2027

The Labour Party (LP) has said that its door is open to the 36 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, who on January 13 supported the removal of Hon. Mudasiru Obasa and installed his deputy, Hon. Mojisola Meranda, as the new speaker.

The LP said the 36 lawmakers should join the party and its 2023 governorship candidate, Architect Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, to rescue Lagos State from the All Progressives Congress (APC), which it said was populated by “democracy assassins”.

According to the LP, APC should be voted out of power in Lagos to prevent complete annihilation of democracy by the APC political family.

Addressing newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Abayomi Arabambi, said it was undemocratic for the APC to have worked for the return of Obasa as speaker of the State Assembly, despite various allegations levelled against him.

Arabambi said, “Lagos State is now a captured territory by groups of “democracy assassins” , and it is therefore expedient that the APC must be voted out in Lagos State to prevent complete annihilation of democracy by the APC political family.”

He said, “We cannot continue to pretend that all is well with our democracy today, and you will particularly agree with me that there is a bold confirmation that in the political trajectory of Lagos State politics, there is always one god whose one vote trumps a million ballots, as encapsulated by the shameful, despicable, and unconstitutional ‘harakiri’ deployed by the APC and its leadership in Lagos to overthrow a democratically elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda.”

The LP condemned what it described as the undue silence of the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on the Lagos State House of Assembly speaker impeachment saga.

“The Labour Party National Working Committee, under Bar. Julius Abure and Alh. Farouk Umar Ibrahim, hereby calls on the APC administration in Lagos State under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to urgently explain allegations levelled against Obasa by the 36 heroes of democracy in the Lagos State House of Assembly. The APC and its government must stop covering up these allegations.”

“Failure to do so should result in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s resignation or the commencement of impeachment proceedings against him.”

“The Labour Party therefore appreciates the 36 heroes of democracy for their interest in joining LP ahead of 2027, alongside our governorship candidate, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who was rigged out in 2023 but is now positioned to take over the mantle of leadership as the next governor of Lagos State on May 29, 2027.”

Arabambi enjoined the people of Lagos to disregard alleged negative comments made by the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Abdul-Azeez Adeniran, against Rhodes-Vivour, saying he remains the LP candidate for the 2027 election in Lagos State.

He said, “There is no vacancy in the Labour Party, as Architect Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour remains our sole candidate for the Alausa seat of government.”

  • IBB’s Book: Backlash, criticism over June 12 annulment persist

IBB’s Book: Backlash, criticism over June 12 annulment persist

Former Nigerian military president, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), continues to face criticism following the release of his autobiography, A Journey in Service, particularly for his role in annulling the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.

During a radio program, PUBLIC CONSCIENCE, produced by the Progressive Impact Organization for Community Development (PRIMORG) in Abuja, PRIMORG’s Executive Director, Okhiria Agbonsuremi, joined a growing list of Nigerians questioning Babangida’s memoir.

Speaking on the annulment, Agbonsuremi criticized Babangida’s failure to declare the late MKO Abiola as the rightful winner. He argued that the book portrays the former military leader not as the strongman many perceived him to be but as a coward unwilling to take a stand.

“The content of IBB’s book reveals that he was not the strong leader we thought he was. He comes across as a coward—someone who, despite being a military president, could not stand up to his colleagues and assert his decision,” Agbonsuremi said.

He also condemned Babangida’s acceptance of responsibility for the annulment without offering a sincere apology to the millions affected by the resulting crisis and human rights violations.

“Many lives were lost due to the annulment of the June 12 election. At the very least, Babangida should have opened his book by saying, ‘I take responsibility, I am sorry, I regret my actions, and I will spend the rest of my life atoning for them,’ because he was the one responsible,” he added.

Agbonsuremi urged President Bola Tinubu to break away from the current system hindering Nigeria’s development if he intends to make a lasting impact. He emphasized that Tinubu, given his history with June 12 and NADECO, is in a unique position to challenge political elites and push for systemic reforms.

“The President has June 12 and NADECO in his blood. However, he is deeply embedded in the system, making it difficult for him to bring about change unless he actively separates himself from it. Leadership is a critical issue in Nigeria today, and Tinubu is the only one who can gather political stakeholders and declare, ‘Enough is enough—let’s fix the system,’” Agbonsuremi stated.

He further highlighted the persistent lack of accountability among Nigerian leaders, urging citizens to remain active in demanding good governance through peaceful protests and organized movements.

Listeners who called into the radio program expressed their frustration and disappointment with Babangida’s book, particularly his handling of the June 12 election annulment.

An Abuja resident, Gideon, lamented: “What worries me is that the first credible election was annulled, and an innocent man lost his life. Abiola never got to sit in office. It’s unfortunate. But have we learned from it? Look at INEC today—they act with impunity.”

Peter from Lugbe, Abuja, added: “IBB’s book is disappointing. I was 13 in 1992, in JSS 2, and I remember celebrating Abiola’s victory on the streets. This is shameful.”

Moses from Wuse II, Abuja, remarked: “There’s nothing exciting about the book. IBB brought Nigeria into this mess. Many lives were lost under his rule. He had a chance to fix the country, but he was too weak—even failing to win PDP primaries when he tried to return to power.”

Oreke from Abuja accused Babangida of dishonesty: “IBB is not telling the truth. His book does not reflect what really happened. He owes Nigerians an apology.”

Human rights lawyer and former Chairman of the Nigerian Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, also criticized Babangida’s book launch, calling the former military leader the “Grand Commander of the Order of Cowardice.”

Other prominent figures who have condemned A Journey in Service include human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and the families of the late MKO Abiola and Gen. Sani Abacha.

  • Suspension not enough for Senator Natasha — Akpabio’s supporters

Suspension not enough for Senator Natasha — Akpabio’s supporters

Kinsmen of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, under the umbrella of Afe Annang, a foremost socio-cultural organisation of the Annang nation in Akwa Ibom State, has reacted to the six-month suspension of Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stating that it is not sufficient punishment for a senator who, in their view, has disrespected a revered institution like the Senate.

On Thursday, the Senate imposed a six-month suspension on the Kogi senator, withdrawing all privileges, including allowances and salary, over what it described as a breach of its standing orders following her claim of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

However, speaking to journalists during a media interaction in Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Thursday evening, the Atai Afe Annang, His Majesty Obong Blaise Awakama, flanked by other elders of Annang descent, stated that the embattled senator should have been recalled by her constituents and given proper guidance.

“We are not satisfied with just a suspension; I believe she should be recalled by her constituents and properly advised.

“I don’t think this is the kind of conduct any Nigerian, let alone a woman should bring to the Senate. Suspension alone is not enough; her constituents should recall her, provide proper guidance, and replace her with someone more suitable.”

Emphasising that every ethnic group is represented in the Senate, the elders warned that no female senator should be used as a front to tarnish the reputation of the Senate President, as they would continue to stand by him.

They cautioned against any attempt to remove him from office, stating that they would not sit idly by and watch such a move succeed. They also stressed that a false claim of sexual harassment should not be weaponised as a tool of political persecution.

Awakama said, “Every senator represents a people. Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio represents the people of the Annang Nation, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District of Akwa Ibom State.

“He also represents the entire nation as the Senate President, and we are proud of him and stand by him. No female senator should be used to defame him.

“If there is an organised political plot to remove him from office, we shall not stand by and allow his adversaries to succeed. The Annang Nation has made significant sacrifices and contributions to Nigeria, and our son, the Senate President, deserves to be treated with honour and respect.
