  • Immigrants should only get British citizenship after 15 years – Kemi Badenoch

Immigrants should only get British citizenship after 15 years – Kemi Badenoch

Kemi Badenoch has unveiled a major policy shift, proposing that immigrants must wait at least 15 years before becoming eligible for British citizenship.

The plan, part of her first major announcement as Tory leader, seeks to tighten the immigration system by extending the period before migrants can apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) from five to ten years.

She also disclosed that those who claim benefits, access social housing, or have criminal records would be barred from settling in the UK permanently.

“I want to reduce immigration and make living here actually mean something. We need to change the way our immigration system works. So I am announcing that the conservative party is going to do the following things differently: 1. If you want to stay in our country permanently and apply for indefinite leave to remain, the time you have to live here before you apply would increase from 5 years to 10 years. 2. You will have to be a net contributor with a high enough salary, especially if you want to bring family members with you. And if you have a criminal record, you are banned.

“We would increase the time you can apply for a British passport from 12 months to 5 years, meaning it will take a minimum of 15 years to start an application. If you enter this country illegally or overstay your visa, you will be banned from ever getting leave to remain or a passport,” she said in a video shared on her X, formerly known as Twitter, handle.

Under the current system, most migrants can apply for ILR after five years of working in the UK, with some visa holders qualifying in two or three years.

ILR grants the right to live, work, and study in the UK indefinitely, and after 12 months, holders can apply for

    British citizenship.

The new Conservative proposal extends the ILR period to ten years and mandates an additional five-year wait before migrants can apply for citizenship—tripling the minimum timeframe from six to 15 years.

The party is pushing for these changes to be backdated to 2021 by amending the upcoming Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill, set for parliamentary debate next week.

Badenoch’s plan also cracks down on welfare access for immigrants.

While most migrants on work visas, asylum seekers, and those in the UK illegally cannot claim state benefits due to the “no recourse to public funds” condition, some have had the restriction lifted.

Badenoch argued that the current system had created a “conveyor belt” to citizenship, allowing too many people to settle in the UK too quickly and “creating a strain on public services.”

“We need to make sure that people coming here have a real, meaningful connection to the UK—no criminal records, they should be net contributors to the economy, not relying on benefits but people who care about our country and our communities,” she said in ss quoted by BBC.

However, she declined to specify how much this policy would reduce migration numbers.

Wike to Nigerians: Be patient amid economic challenges

IBADAN — MINISTER of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, Mr Nysome Wike, yesterday, urged Nigerians to be calm and patient in light of the current economic difficulties the country is facing.

Wike, who spoke in Ibadan during a condolence visit to Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State over the death of his elder brother, Engr. Sunday Makinde, explained that the policies of President Bola Tinubu are aimed at improving the nation.

He said: “I have always told people to be patient with this government. This country has faced significant challenges in the past, and it’s essential to recognise the progress we’ve made. Nigerians often forget where we were and the efforts being made to improve our situation.”

The minister, in the company of the former governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom and other dignitaries, urged Nigerians to understand that while the transition may be painful, it is necessary for long-term benefits.

He said: “There is no such thing as a miracle solution. The policies Mr President is enacting are designed to benefit all Nigerians.

“Although we may have to endure some hardships now, we should not panic. Mr President genuinely cares for our country, and I assure you that better days are ahead.”

Commiserating with the Makinde family, Wike expressed deep condolences and emphasised the importance of unity in times of grief.

He said: “In this moment of profound loss, we are here to offer our love and solidarity.”

  • ‘You’ve lost control of Osun security’ —  APC chieftain blasts Adeleke

‘You’ve lost control of Osun security’ —  APC chieftain blasts Adeleke

Following spate of communal crises over Chieftaincy matters and boundaries in Osun State, the National Secretary of All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru on Tuesday said Governor Ademola Adeleke has lost grip on the security of the state.

It would be recalled that communities like Ifon and Ilobu; Ido-Osun and Ede, Esa-Oke and Ido-Ajegunle; Iragbiji; Igbajo; Iree; among others have been engulfed in land tussles or Chieftaincy matters resulting to breakdown of law and order.

Speaking on the background of the communal clash in Esa-Oke where seven policemen were shot, Basiru in a chat with journalists in Osogbo, berated Adeleke’s government for losing grip over the security situation in the state.

He said “The governor is only giving false hope to residents of the state he is in control but he is not. It is glaring that he is not with a series of communal clashes characterised by killing, maiming, arson, and loss of properties among others.

“Unfortunately, Adeleke is majorly the precipitator of these clashes and wrangling because he approved controversial chieftaincy matters to cause issues in peaceful domains.”

According to him, protection of lives and property should be paramount to any responsible government but Adeleke has failed that, he also failed in other areas.

“I can assure you that APC will end all these shenanigans of Adeleke’s reign in 2026 and Osun State will be the most peaceful state in Nigeria again like the days of progressives.”

Reacting, the Osun State Government through Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi chided Basiru, saying Adeleke is in charge, hence lives and property are safe.

“It is quite unfortunate that Basiru is playing politics with this matter. Adeleke visited all these places and also set panel of enquiry to resolve the matter. The accusations are useless, fallacious and laughable. Adeleke is not the cause of all the crisis”, Alimi said.

  • Ijaw Nation demands creation of two new states over marginalization

Ijaw Nation demands creation of two new states over marginalization

YENAGOA — The Ijaw National Congress (INC), the apex socio-cultural organization of the Ijaw people, has reiterated its call for the creation of two additional states—Toru-Ebe and Oil Rivers—citing decades of political marginalization and environmental degradation.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday at Ijaw House in Yenagoa, the INC President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, stressed that despite being the fourth-largest ethnic group in Nigeria and hosting four of the country’s major oil export terminals, the Ijaw people have suffered immense neglect.

Prof. Okaba, flanked by key INC leaders, unveiled the proposed map for the two states.

Toru-Ebe State would span local government areas in Delta, Edo, and Ondo states, with Burutu as its capital.

Oil Rivers State would cover Ijaw LGAs in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states, with Southern Harcourt City proposed as its capital.

He emphasized that the creation of these states is vital for political inclusion, environmental protection, and sustainable development in the Ijaw region.

“The creation of these two additional states is one of the crucial, sensitive, and prescient irreducible conditions for the continuous commitment of the Ijaw people to the Nigerian project,” Okaba stated.

He lamented the lack of federal presence in Ijaw territory, noting the absence of federal roads, universities, and critical infrastructure despite the region’s significant contribution to the national economy through oil and gas resources.

Prof. Okaba highlighted the severe environmental degradation caused by oil spills, gas flaring, and ecological destruction, which threaten the survival of Ijaw communities. He argued that statehood would empower the Ijaw people to enforce environmental protection policies and pursue sustainable development.

The INC urged the National Assembly to prioritize the demand for the creation of Toru-Ebe and Oil Rivers states in the ongoing constitutional review process.

“We call on the Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and all distinguished members of the National Assembly to seize this moment in history and act in the interest of justice,” Okaba said.

He described the demand as a historic step toward justice, equity, and peace in the Niger Delta, adding that it would correct historical injustices, foster economic development, and secure a better future for the Ijaw people.

The INC expressed confidence that the creation of the states would address political exclusion and promote national cohesion. They also called on all Ijaw sons and daughters, as well as well-meaning Nigerians, to support the cause for fairness and equity.

  • Negotiating with terrorists

    Negotiating with terrorists

The activities of terrorists, bandits, armed herdsmen, kidnappers and other forms of crime have almost brought the country to its knees.

Tens of thousands have lost their lives, while millions of others have been maimed and displaced, especially in the North East, Middle Belt and North-West Nigeria.

Kaduna State, one of the six states in the North West, had been under attacks by bandits, especially in communities such as Chikun, Kagarko, Giwa, Kajuru and Birnin Gwari local government areas of the state. To curb the activities of these criminals, the state government offered a peace deal to the bandits.

While we commend the Kaduna State Government’s efforts in trying to end these criminalities in the state, we do not think that negotiating with criminals is a sustainable solution to insecurity. It was not the first time the government was negotiating with bandits. The former governor of the State, Nasir el-Rufai, also negotiated with them without any positive result.

Negotiating with criminals has never been an effective solution to criminality. It only emboldens the criminals and places the government in a position of weakness.

Such compromise also erodes people’s confidence in the ability of the government to protect their lives and property. Those who lost their relations to the criminals are bound to feel betrayed, seeing the murderers of their kit and kin pardoned and walking the streets free.

Poverty, hunger and illiteracy which are products of  mis-governance, give rise and feed banditry, terrorism and other forms of criminality in Nigeria. One of the lasting solutions to insecurity, therefore, is good governance geared towards eradication of poverty, hunger and illiteracy.

A good and effective government will build effective security agencies that will never buge even an inch to criminals. For now, as gallant as they are, the rate at which the men and officers of our armed forces are being mowed down by terrorists shows there is something fundamentally wrong.

If we must have a country, our politicians must completely overhaul the way they govern Nigerians. There is no magic by which a corrupt government can build and maintain effective and corruption-free armed forces, which are needed to deal decisively with criminals and all kinds of security threats.

The citizens are also significant partners in any fight against insecurity. Security agents are not spirits; the secret to their success is gathering of intelligence mostly from members of the public. A population that does not trust its security agents will hardly volunteer information to them.

We can never overemphasise the need for the establishment of state or regional police in the country. Nigeria is too large to be policed from Abuja. Policemen and women are most effective when they work in their most familiar terrains, especially where they are invested in the people’s progress and welfare.

No country, including Nigeria, can make any form of progress until the government rises up to its constitutional responsibility of providing security of life and property to the people.

  • A lazy opposition in disarray goes for broke, by Rotimi Fasan

A lazy opposition in disarray goes for broke, by Rotimi Fasan

In just over two weeks, it would have been two years since President Bola Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election. His victory was hard won and is still the cause of much bitterness among members of the opposition who still cannot reconcile themselves to it. For them, it’s as if there could be a way to overturn his presidency. Which might explain why a man like Rotimi Amaechi would invite Nigerian youths to turn to violence in their struggle for power. As he claimed, Nigerians politicians would steal, maim and kill in order to grab power.

Those who would wrest power from them, Amaechi went on to say, must be willing to do exactly the same thing. That may sound fair enough, if it’s a piece of advice for politicians like him. But Nigerian youths are not necessarily politicians and need not be incited to violence in the manner Amaechi has been pushing for some time now. In October last year, Amaechi had criticised young Nigerians for not taking to the street to protest the rising cost of living. Clearly, he has something up his sleeves with his periodic calls for violence. And one wonders how old Amaechi himself is that he is not leading such protests if he is so convinced that is the only route open to him and his ilk to power.

It has to be said that this incitement of the youth is not about them. Rather, it is about politicians like Amaechi who have totally lost out in the power game. They are looking to make young Nigerians cannon fodder for their ambition. They have been at it since Tinubu was declared president on February 25, 2023. At various times and in both overt and covert gestures, opposition elements have tried their hands at inciting violence, even calling on the military not to stand by and look. Some of them literally went on their knees in front of the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, calling on the military. For them any way and anything is acceptable provided it could get them back to power.

All of this is understandable if not justifiable. Electoral loss is more often than not a very painful affair for

those concerned. In an environment like ours where winning is something of a zero-sum game, losing an election is even more painful. There is so much at stake with politicians personally bearing the cost of their election unlike in other parts of the world where there are structures for political donors to step in. Here, people steal from the state, maim and kill their opponents or anyone else standing in their way. Rotimi Amaechi, as a politician himself, should know this.

A loss is often visceral and frequently leads most politicians into financial ruin. They can only survive on public stolen funds. Rotimi Amaechi was not shy to remark at the gathering of malcontents they misnamed a national conference to strengthen democracy, that poverty would not let him leave politics. This, after he has spent about two thirds of his adult life in politics. It is remarkable that he could only explain his involvement in politics in terms of lucre. Like Amaechi, the disgruntled Nasir el Rufai, former Governor of Kaduna state, continues to speak from both sides of the mouth.

For about a year now, he has been keeping the company of his political enemies like former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar. Yet he wants Nigerians to accept him as a member of the APC and he has vowed to continue his agitation against the party from within the party. How does his partnership with others to form a so-called mega party square with his claim of attacking from within what he finds objectionable about his party? Who does he think is deceived by criticisms of both his party and the APC-led government that has suddenly grown loud?

Mourning and lamenting their loss, those opposed to the Tinubu administration are daily coming together under different umbrellas. Suddenly, sworn enemies have cozied up to one another and they are all singing the same song of freeing Nigeria from the assumed stranglehold of Bola Tinubu who is now viewed as a dictator. Following the arrest of Omoyele Sowore over his issues with the Police, Atiku Abubakar, Tinubu’s

one time friend and main rival in the 2023 election, wants the world to know that the president is out to silence all opposition voices.

He sees nothing wrong in Shehu Madhi. a so-called activist peddling dangerous rumours about France setting up a military base in the north. For Atiku, except Tinubu is stopped, Nigerians would soon become a huge prison yard just because of the prosecution of some people through the judicial system. Just when Atiku Abubakar chose to project his personal fear of losing all chances of ever becoming president on other Nigerians, by accusing Tinubu of despotism, he also accused the ruling party of dolling out N50 million to bribe each opposition party. He made this claim against the background of the drama that played out during the PDP’s Board of Trustees meeting that ended in blows among supporters of the two men claiming to be the party’s National Secretary.

Rather than provide the kind of leadership required of an opposition party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar stays abroad and makes periodic trips home to rally supporters around his ambition to lead the PDP into the next election. With the PDP in confusion, the Labour Party out of joint and the other parties not knowing where to turn, the field has been left open for the APC to graze as it pleases and some politicians want to blame that on Tinubu. Are they expecting him or his party to help them win power? Was that how he got it? The sheer foolishness of opposition claims that the APC is bribing their members is self-indicting. It shows the irresponsibility of our politicians.

They are full of talks about forming another party, a so-called third force or special purpose vehicle that Professor Pat Utomi and others promoted to no avail before the 2023 election. Nobody wants to do the dirty job of building their own party. Rather, they are busy inciting violence among the youth, giving life to baseless rumours of marginalising the north.

Having failed to make any headway with the manufactured controversies around tax reforms and rising cost of living, the goal is now to encourage the invasion of bandits and the promotion of a political sharia among a south-western population that has never been known for religious intolerance. Why it should be the business of the north to teach the Yoruba about sharia is what nobody has been able to explain among the do-gooders crying more than the bereaved.

  • ‘Frank Mba is loyal, don’t drag him into Egbetokun’s tenure brouhaha’ — Reno Omokri

‘Frank Mba is loyal, don’t drag him into Egbetokun’s tenure brouhaha’ — Reno Omokri

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s ex-media aide, Reno Omokri, has urged the public not to link Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Frank Mba, to the controversy surrounding the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Omokri stated that after conducting his own inquiries, he found that Mba is content with his role as DIG and remains loyal to Egbetokun.

Egbetokun’s tenure has sparked debate over whether he should retire upon turning 60 in September 2024. However, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, clarified that Egbetokun’s tenure remains valid for four years, beginning from his appointment on October 31, 2023.

Amid the controversy, some social media users have accused Mba, who hails from the South-East, of orchestrating opposition to Egbetokun’s tenure as a way to position himself as his successor. Others argue that Egbetokun’s extended stay is meant to block an Igbo officer from becoming IGP.

Mba, who was promoted to DIG in June 2023, is the most senior police officer from the South-East geopolitical zone.

Omokri condemned the speculation, warning that it could harm Mba’s career by misrepresenting him and creating unnecessary tension.

“I also found this to be such an open secret within police circles so much so that even close aides and friends of the IGP lay credence to the fact that Frank is probably the highest supporter of his boss, Egbetokun, amongst serving police officers,” Omokri said.

He stressed that the appointment of an IGP is the president’s prerogative and is not swayed by social media influence or sentimental arguments.

Omokri urged those who claim to support Mba to stop spreading misinformation, emphasising that Mba is focused on his duties and does not need unnecessary controversy jeopardising his career.

Insecurity: Asagba of Asaba vows to ensure crackdown on drug peddlers

ASABA –THE Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof Epiphany Azinge, SAN, has vowed to ensure a crackdown on drug peddlers who he said have infested the Cable Point area of the State capital in the next one week.

He reiterated his determination to restore the lost glory of Cable-Point which he said, was rooted in history as once a centre of attraction where notable elites resided.

Speaking at a reception held in his honour by the various communities resident in Cable Point, Azinge noted that “for us coming to Cable Point is to reconnect with our history and or past. For us to abandon Cable Point is to abandon a rich part of our history.

“So, we have resolved that it is in our collective interest not to abandon Cable Point but to make sure that we build Cable Point.”

The Asagba expressed worry that the area was now almost a theatre of conflict, saying “if there is any escalation of violence that will ensue in Asaba, it is likely to erupt from Cable Point.

“We are here to forestall any eventuality to make sure that it doesn’t happen and the only way that it will not happen is for you people to take responsibility, to know how to confront some of these emergencies and to take the bull by the horn early in the day.

“We are here because, Cable Point, from the intelligence available to us, is more or less a drug-infested area. Most of the drugs peddled in Asaba that filter into the other parts of Asaba, have their roots here in Cable Point and that is why we are saying enough is enough.

“We are only going to give one week’s notice to all those people involved before we start raiding all those places. We know why we are here, we are here for a mission and the mission is to send this message to all the people residing on Cable Point that yes, Asaba is peaceful, but we don’t want any conflagration or breach of peace that will start from Cable-Point.

“So we want to thank you for this reception. But for me, it is not the quality of the reception thatis important. What is important to me is that there is a restoration of the quality of the cable point we are used to by the

    time we leave here.

“We want to encourage you to live the way you have been living, especially those of you who were born here and those who have been here for more than 60 years. “

  • Use your money to build APC, Ganduje tells Anambra billionaires

Use your money to build APC, Ganduje tells Anambra billionaires

ABUJA: Ahead of the November 8, 2025, Governorship Election in Anambra state, National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje has asked members in the state to use their huge war-chest to develop the party rather than using it to scatter it.

Ganduje handed down the charge on Tuesday in Abuja when he received an APC youth group, Booth to Booth with Bola Tinubu.

He said; “Anambra should assist in providing conducive atmosphere. As a party, if we are to have good primary in the state, all our stakeholders are supposed to be born again.

“There are issues so litigations, court orders etc. We have told them that this time around, business should not be as usual. Let us support the system. We know they are very rich, they have a lot of money, but they should not use the money to scatter the state.

“They should use the money to build the state, not to scatter the state. They should use the money to build APC, it will succeed.

“In fact, I will be highly impressed if they can produce a candidate by consensus. I will give them an award”.

On the mode of primary election for the state, Ganduje said the NWC would meet in the matter and also meet with the state chapter of the party and other stakeholders before coming up with a decision.

Leader of the group, Iyke Madu told the Ganduje-led National Working Committee NWC to opt for indirect primaries in Anambra.

He said; “Before the election comes a primary election for the party. We are here to also make a request from you, sir, and the leadership of the National Working Committee, which is to see to it that a credible, free, transparent primary is conducted in Anambra state.

“This is to avoid the pitfalls of 2021, where primaries were supposed to have been conducted and election results announced in hotel rooms in which a candidate got up to 300,000 votes in the primaries, but on election day could not even get up to 50,000 votes.

“So, we are here to humbly request for you to ensure that a free and fair, credible primary election is conducted in Anambra state.

“We also have one more request. We heard, we are not yet sure, it has not been confirmed that the party is planning to conduct direct primaries in the states, which involves every other person, every member of the party. That is what we heard. It is a rumour. That is why you said you have not confirmed.

“There is issue of insecurity in Anambra state as we speak. Even the state government could not conduct their own local government elections due to insecurity. They wrote to some certain communities telling them that due to insecurity, elections cannot be conducted in those places, and we are thinking if a state government cannot conduct their own local government election due to insecurity, it is going to be difficult for a party that does not control the state to do direct primaries.

“So, we are here humbly requesting for the party to make these primaries, indirect, our constitution provides for that, institutions where we have delegates, come into a particular place and if possible, for it to be televised on national TV. With that, any candidate that emerges, I don’t think any other person will have any reason to question it”, he added.

IGP warns against case transfers, misuse of office

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed concern over unethical practices within the Force, including unwarranted transfers of ongoing cases and the misuse of police authority.

Force PRO, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement highlighting the IGP’s directive for transparency, professionalism, and accountability in handling investigations.

The IGP warned officers against indiscriminate case transfers and misuse of authority in civil disputes, especially land matters, emphasizing that cases must be handled within the jurisdiction of occurrence unless authorized by his office.

    Key measures include:

Strict disciplinary actions for unauthorized case transfers

Limiting police involvement in civil matters unless criminal elements are present

    Mandatory declaration for petition authenticity

    Sanctions for filing false petitions

Egbetokun also urged the public to channel complaints directly to relevant police units rather than the IGP’s office and vowed strict consequences for those misusing police authority.

He reassured Nigerians of the Force’s commitment to delivering justice and upholding professionalism.
