Plateau: Outrage grows over killings, Gov Mutfwang apologises

JOS — Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State yesterday apologised to the people of Bassa Local Government Area for the failure of government and security agencies to protect lives and properties, as condemnations trailed the killings.

This is as a survivor of the attack lamented that his sister wouldn’t have died if she had not, out of fear, run out of her hiding.

The governor’s apology came on a day former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, in the 2023 elections, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, ex-governor of Plateau State, Jonah Jang, and the northern chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, condemned the killings and tasked government to punish the perpetrators. Recall that no fewer than 52 persons were killed last Sunday night at Zike community of the LGA, barely two weeks after same number of persons were slaughtered in Bokkos Local Government Area of the state, bringing the total killed to 104.

The governor, who gave the apology at the palace of the Paramount Ruler of Miango community of the state, said: “I will tell you the truth, I have been crying since yesterday (Monday) because I had trusted God that all the arrangements were put in place, that this will not happen again. We have made investments in security. “But like all human arrangements, sometimes they fail. I want to admit that on Sunday night into Monday morning, we failed you. Please, forgive me.”

He urged the people not to relent in their efforts to secure their communities and ensure that they complement security agencies’ efforts by providing vital information for intelligence gathering and expose the antics of the criminals.

Governor Mutfwang, who was in the company of security chiefs and members of the state executive council, was in Zikke community to commiserate with the people on the death of over fifty persons killed in the attacks.
In his remarks, the Paramount Ruler of Irigwe land, Ronku Aka, who is the Brangwe of Irigwe, urged government to come to the aid of the communities with the provision of social amenities in the area. The governor and the entourage also visited some of the families who lost their loved ones in the attack.

The victims have been buried, even as members of the community demanded action to stem the rising wave of insecurity in the state.

My sister got killed when she left our hiding place — Survivor

A survivor of the attack lamented the palpable fear that prompted his sister to run out of their hiding place and got killed when the attackers invaded their home.“The survivor, Eric Danlami, said they were asleep when the invaders came into the hamlet at about midnight, as the sounds of gunshots and the pandemonium woke them.“His words: “We had retired to bed in the night without any form of suspicion of any kind of problems.

At the time we heard the sporadic gunshots and movement of the people, we found a place to hide in one of the rooms, not knowing that the attackers had already entered our elder brother’s apartment at the boy’s quarters and slaughtered them, a family of five.“”His wife and first son survived and are currently in the hospital, but my sister, whom we were hiding together in a room, was afraid that they would enter the house.

As she left the place we were hiding to go to another hiding place, she was sighted. They shot at her and she didn’t survive it.”

IGP speaks of deployment of more personnel, resources

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who was also in the state yesterday, said the days of perpetrators of attacks on rural communities in Plateau State were numbered and assured the people of the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring adequate security in the state.“He said: “We condemn these acts of violence and recognise their devastating impact, especially on local farmers. In response, we have deployed more security personnel and resources to the affected areas and are working closely with other security agencies.

”Intelligence gathering efforts have also been intensified to identify and bring the masterminds behind these attacks to justice. We will work tirelessly until these issues are resolved. I assure you that these criminal elements will soon be outnumbered. I appeal to the people of Plateau to remain calm and peaceful.”

    PIDAN demands justice for victims

Meanwhile, the President of Plateau Initiative for Development and Advancement of the Natives, PIDAN, the umbrella body of the 56 autonomous communities in Plateau State, Amb. Nanpon Sheni, at a media briefing, demanded justice for the victims through accelerated arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

“The peaceful indigenous tribes of Plateau State have been subjected to sustained acts of genocide by terrorist groups connected to global terrorist networks. They perpetrate heinous acts such as rape of women and girls, assaults on houses of worship and kidnapping.

“If these attacks remain unchecked, its ramifications for Nigeria’s stability, security and prosperity will be catastrophic. We call on the international community, the federal, and state governments and all stakeholders to acknowledge the gravity of the plight of Nigerians under this siege and take immediate action to push back terrorism.

“We demand justice for the victims of terrorism and genocide through the accelerated prosecutions as promised by the President.

Nigerians dying from Tinubu’s incompetence — Atiku

Reacting to the killings, former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, blamed President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the recent spike in deadly attacks across the state, accusing the government of incompetence and failure to protect lives.

In a strongly-worded statement posted on his official Facebook page yesterday, Atiku expressed deep sorrow over the killing of at least 52 persons in Zike community, Kwali district of Bassa Local Government Area, just days after a similar tragedy in Bokkos LGA, underlining what he described as “the worsening state of security in our country.

“I am deeply saddened and alarmed by the resurgence of violent attacks in Plateau State.” Atiku wrote further.
“It is regrettable and entirely unacceptable that these Nigerians had to lose their lives as a result of the incompetence of the Tinubu-led administration.

”The protection of lives and property is the primary responsibility of any government. Unfortunately, President Tinubu has failed these citizens and continues to fail them.”

Beyond Plateau, the former vice president also decried the rising tide of terrorism in Borno State, citing statements from Borno State governor, Babagana Zulum, and the Shehu of Borno, which indicated growing losses in both lives and territory to insurgents.

“These disturbing developments underscore the total collapse of the current administration’s security policy and architecture,” Atiku said.

He further criticized the Federal Government’s failure to bring terrorists and bandits to justice, noting that some suspects arrested as far back as 2016 are yet to be prosecuted.

He added: “If the same level of urgency and energy were devoted to the prosecution of terrorists as we have seen applied to the trials of political critics, we would have sent a clear and forceful message that crime has nsequences.’

He also condemned the failure to prevent cross-border incursions by armed groups, labeling it a “national disgrace.”

Perpetrators must be brought to book — Kwankwaso

On hs part, the presidential candidate of New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, in 2023 election, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, called on the relevant authorities to ensure that perpetrators of the heinous killings in Plateau State were brought to book.

He also urged the relevant authorities to rise to their responsibility to ensure the state was not allowed to become a hotbed of violence by ensuring that all lives and properties were protected.

Kwankwaso in a post on his verified Facebook handle said: “I am saddened to learn of the attack on Zike community, Kimakpa, in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, which resulted in the death of 52 people and destruction of several properties.

“This sad attack came after over fifty persons were killed within a week in attacks over five communities in the state.

“It is important that Plateau State must not be allowed to become a hotbed of violence and wanton destruction again after the relative peace it has enjoyed in recent years.

“The Federal Government must rise to its responsibility to ensure that all lives and properties are protected and the message of peace should be embraced by everyone in the state and beyond.

Killings in Plateau, agenda by known group — Jang

In his reaction, former governor of Plateau State and ex-senator representing Plateau North senatorial district, Jonah Jang, condemned the recurring spate of killings in the state, saying the attacks and killing of over 100 lives within two week was painful.“

He advised President Tinubu to convene an expanded meeting with community leaders to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the situation in Plateau State, adding that such a meeting will provide a platform for stakeholders to share insights and experiences, and enable the President develop a more informed approach to tackling the problem.“

In a statement issued in Jos yesterday, Jang said: “Let’s call a spade a spade, I offer my deepest condolences to the government and people of Plateau State in the wake of the recent wave of attacks that have claimed numerous innocent lives. ”These senseless killings have caused pain and suffering for our great state and its people, and we must take immediate action to put an end to this violence. “I commend Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his tireless efforts to find a lasting solution to this crisis. His dedication to the safety and well-being of Plateau citizens is truly commendable. I also applaud President Bola Tinubu for his determination to stop the senseless killings of innocent citizens.

”His commitment to protecting the lives of Nigerians, particularly those in Plateau State, is a positive step forward.

“However, I believe it is important to address a misconception in the President’s recent statement directing Governor Mutfwang to resolve the ‘communal issue.’ This suggestion appears to stem from inaccurate briefings by his advisers.

”The attacks in Plateau State are not merely communal disputes; they are perpetrated by a known group with a specific agenda. It is crucial for the President to understand the true nature of these attacks in order to address them effectively.

Additionally, I advise President Tinubu to convene an expanded meeting with community leaders to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the situation in Plateau State. Such a meeting would provide a platform for stakeholders to share their insights and experiences, as this will enable the President to develop a more informed approach to tackling this problem.

The former Plateau governor urged the people of the state to remain strong and resist any attempts to undermine their existence.

“As peace-loving and welcoming citizens, we have endured enough. It is time for us to defend ourselves against these aggressors and demand justice. I call upon the people of Plateau State to stay united, vigilant and proactive in the face of these attacks,” he said.

Northern CAN condemns killings in Plateau

Similarly, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Northern Nigeria, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam, also strongly condemned the brutal killings in Bassa Local Government Area of the state.

CAN in a statement signed by the chairman, Rev. Yakubu Pam, said the Christian body was deeply saddened and outraged by the senseless and barbaric attacks that claimed the lives of innocent and peace-loving citizens.

These repeated acts of violence are not only a violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life, but they are also a direct threat to the peace and unity of our state and the nation at large.“’Northern CAN stands in solidarity with the grieving families and the entire people of Bassa LGA in this moment of pain. We call on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

”We also urge the government at all levels to take proactive steps to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of lives.”

Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam reiterated that the time had come for all stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, security operatives, and community-based organizations, to unite in purpose and work together to end the cycle of violence that had plagued Plateau State for far too long.“”We pray for peace, healing, and justice. Plateau must not bleed again,” Rev Pam added.

he chaos; our governors try to make a point about needing unity, but targeting Anyanwu seems more like a proxy war or witch hunt against FCT Minister, Wike rather than a principled stand.

Police declare Ihuoma Julia Nneji, daughter of ABC transport owner, wanted

The Nigeria Police Force has declared Ihuoma Julia Nneji, a daughter of Frank Nneji, the founder of the popular ABC Transport, wanted over alleged cybercrime.

Miss Nneji was declared wanted on Tuesday night by the Office of the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Centre (NPF NCCN), Abuja, as posted on the Force’s official Facebook page.

According to the ‘wanted’ post, the police listed her offences to include “criminal defamation, injurious falsehood and cyberstalking”.

Further findings by MCC News show that the daughter of the ABC Transport owner allegedly engaged herself and friends in cyberbullying and blackmailing an Abuja businessman (name withheld) from August through September 2024.

Following the alleged online blackmailing, social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, aka Verydarkman, on September 24, 2024, in a strong warning video post, gave Miss Nneji 24 hours to retract her blackmailing post and apologise to the businessman, threatening to go after her with evidence if she refuses to tender an apology within the given time frame.

  • Biden slams Trump ‘destruction’ in first post-presidency speech

Biden slams Trump ‘destruction’ in first post-presidency speech

Joe Biden, in his first major speech since leaving the White House, railed Tuesday against his successor Donald Trump’s frenetic government overhaul, claiming the “hatchet” effort put Americans’ retirement benefits at risk.

“Fewer than 100 days, this administration has done so much damage, and so much destruction — it’s kind of breathtaking it could happen that soon,” Biden told a conference of disability advocates in Chicago.

“They’ve taken a hatchet to the Social Security administration, pushing 7,000 employees out the door,” said the former president, referring to the national agency which pays out retirement and disability benefits.

Wearing a blue suit and tie, and standing in front of American flags, the 82-year-old Democrat spoke for around a half-hour, displaying at times the signs of aging that prompted him to abandon his re-election campaign last year.

He stumbled over some sentences as he read from a teleprompter and struggled to get through winding off-the-cuff anecdotes, cutting himself off with a favorite phrase, “anyways.”

President Trump, in a jab at Biden, posted a short video on social media of one of the rambling anecdotes, without comment.

Biden’s choice of topic, Social Security, aimed to ramp up pressure on Trump over his rampaging government overhaul efforts.

He highlighted staff reductions at the agency that Trump and his billionaire aide Elon Musk have pushed as part of their “Department of Government Efficiency,” saying the Social Security “website is crashing” and hindering retirees from getting their benefits.

The program, which more than 65 million Americans rely on, is colloquially known in Washington as the “third rail of politics” for its sensitivity to voters.

Many Americans “literally count on social security to buy food, just to get by,” Biden said, and “many of these beneficiaries, it’s their only income. If it were cut or taken away, it would be devastating, devastating for millions of people.”

He bashed Trump’s commerce secretary, former hedge fund manager Howard Lutnick, over a recent remark in which he said “fraudsters” would complain about a missing check, but not his mother-in-law.

Biden scoffed at that characterization, saying “what about the 94-year-old mother living all by herself — who doesn’t have a billionaire in the family?”

  • Attempted murder: Court revokes bail of co-defendants in trial of traditional ruler

Attempted murder: Court revokes bail of co-defendants in trial of traditional ruler

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, on Monday, revoked the bail granted to two co-defendants in the alleged attempted murder trial of Oba Solomon Akinola, the Oloko of Oko.

Akinola, the two co-defendants whose bails were revoked, Chief Sunday Aderinto and Adejare Adeleru, are facing a 27-count charge including land grabbing and attempted murder.

Other defendants in the matter are Chief Jimoh Asimiyu, Timothy Aderinto, Matthew Akintaro, Rafiu Ganiyu, Samson Ogunmola, Zachiaus Adeleru, and Kamorudeen Ajibade.

Also arraigned are Raji Rasaq, Mutiu Arowosaye, Oyeyemi Oyelekan Olusegun Oyelekan and Sheriff Adio.

Justice Kareem Adedokun revoked the bail of the two defendants after he was informed by the prosecutor, Mr Isa O Abdulazeez, that the duo were among those that launched a fresh attack on the Aagba Community on April 5.

The judge stated that bail could be revoked when a defendant facing trial commits a fresh offence.

He ordered the two defendants to be remanded to Agodi Correctional Facility.

Adedokun further issued a bench warrant on Timothy Aderinto, the fourth defendant; Matthew Akintaro, the fifth defendant; Rafiu Ganiyu, the sixth defendant; Samson Ogunmola, the seventh defendant; Zacheus Adeleru, the ninth defendant; and Sheriff Adio, the 15th defendant, for their absence in court.

The judge stated that Akintaro, popularly called Paimo, who had been constantly absent during court proceedings on the excuse of being mentally unstable, must be brought to court either dead or alive.

He subsequently adjourned the case until May 13 for the definite hearing of the case of the defense.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Abdulazeez, had told the court that a fresh attack was launched on Aagba Village, which led to the burning of no fewer than nine houses, including the house of Alagba of Aagba, Oba Joshua Adesola.

He further alleged that the incident claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman, Madam Rachael Bamidele, and destroyed many other properties

In his response, the Defence Counsel, Hakeem Sabana, said that he was not aware of the fresh attack, adding that he was no longer representing the first, second, third, and seventh defendants.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the people of Aagba and Tropical Farm Limited instituted a case against the defendants in November 2023 over the alleged invasion of their community.

It was alleged that the invasion was on the order of Oba Akinola.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) had directed the police to investigate the matter and handed the investigation to the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), who ordered the Oyo State Ministry of Justice to take over the prosecution.

The defendants had pleaded not guilty to the 27-count charge bordering on alleged attempted murder, assault, robbery, stealing, and land grabbing.

  • US judge stops Trump move to revoke 500,000 immigrants’ legal status

US judge stops Trump move to revoke 500,000 immigrants’ legal status

A federal judge on Monday blocked US President Donald Trump’s administration from quickly revoking the legal status of hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and Haiti.

The ruling by District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston is the latest order against Trump’s rapid push to carry out mass deportations, particularly targeting Latin Americans.

In March, the administration said it was moving to revoke the legal status of some 532,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans who came to the United States under a “parole” program initially launched by former president Joe Biden in October 2022.

“The court grants emergency relief staying the Termination of Parole Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans,” Talwani wrote in her order.

The parole program allowed entry to the United States for two years for up to 30,000 migrants per month from the four countries, which have grim human rights records.

In her order, Talwani said the Trump administration had acted on a flawed interpretation of immigration law, with expedited removal applicable to non-citizens entering the United States illegally, but not those authorized to be in the country, such as through the parole program.

Under Trump’s revocation, the immigrants would have lost their legal protection effective April 24, just 30 days after the Department of Homeland Security published its order in the Federal Register.

Trump has vowed to deport “millions” of undocumented migrants in his second term, after running an election campaign that focused on illegal immigration.

Among other measures, he has invoked rare wartime legislation to fly hundreds of alleged members of a Venezuelan gang to El Salvador, which is imprisoning the migrants.

  • Atiku, others’ coalition talk is joint venture bound to fail – Ganduje

Atiku, others’ coalition talk is joint venture bound to fail – Ganduje

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has dismissed speculation over a potential opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections, calling it a “joint venture” bound to fail.

Ganduje made the remarks on Friday during a press briefing after leading members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) on a Sallah visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna State.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar earlier on the same day met with Buhari. Among those who accompanied Atiku on the visit were former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Minister of Communications Isa Pantami and also former governors Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa) and Achike Udenwa (Imo).

While Atiku confirmed there is an ongoing effort to form a strong opposition bloc, he clarified that the visit to Buhari was not related to those plans.

Asked about the recent wave of consultations among key opposition leaders— most notably Atiku —Ganduje expressed confidence in the ruling party’s dominance.

“We are not worried at all,” he said. “This is just history trying to repeat itself. They went on a joint venture, which will not work because from what we have seen, there are just some particles that cannot come together. It is a game, and we will not reveal our technicalities on how to handle it, but we assure you, we are equal to the task.”

Ganduje boasted of the APC’s control of 21 states and described it as “still the strongest party in West Africa.” He added that the party is focused not only on maintaining power but also on expanding its reach before the next elections.

“We are eyeing other states that will come into our fold. Either the governors themselves will come, or we go for election and defeat them to increase our tally. We are comfortable, but we are not resting. We shall continue,” he stated.

  • Fitch upgrades Nigeria’s credit outlook, citing policy reforms, economic stabilization

Fitch upgrades Nigeria’s credit outlook, citing policy reforms, economic stabilization

Global credit rating agency Fitch has revised Nigeria’s long-term foreign-currency issuer default rating (IDR) outlook from Negative to Stable, upgrading the country’s rating from ‘B-’ to ‘B’. The IDR reflects an entity’s vulnerability to default on financial obligations, including distressed debt exchanges.

In a statement released on Friday, Fitch said the decision was driven by renewed confidence in Nigeria’s policy direction, following the implementation of significant economic reforms since June 2023.

“The upgrade reflects increased confidence in the government’s broad commitment to policy reforms implemented since its move to orthodox economic policies in June 2023, including exchange rate liberalisation, monetary policy tightening and steps to end deficit monetisation and remove fuel subsidies,” Fitch said.

These reforms, according to Fitch, have improved policy coherence and credibility, helping to reduce economic distortions and short-term risks to macroeconomic stability.

“These have improved policy coherence and credibility and reduced economic distortions and near-term risks to macroeconomic stability, enhancing resilience in the context of persistent domestic challenges and heightened external risks.”

    Policy Outlook and Inflation Projections

Fitch expects Nigeria’s current macroeconomic stance to support a gradual decline in inflation and enhance the functionality of the foreign exchange (FX) market, even though inflation rates will likely remain high compared to peer economies.

“The stable outlook reflects Fitch’s expectation that the macroeconomic policy stance will support the move to lower inflation and sustain improvements in the foreign exchange (FX) market’s operation, though it will likely remain much higher than rating peers.”

The agency also pointed to continued reduction in external vulnerabilities and the formalisation of FX activity as positive developments. Recent moves by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), including the launch of an electronic FX matching platform and a new FX code, are seen as steps toward greater transparency and stability.

“Greater formalisation of FX activity including the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recent introduction of an electronic FX matching platform and a new FX code to enhance transparency and efficiency, along with monetary policy tightening, has led to a greater rise in FX liquidity and general stability in the FX market after a 40% depreciation in 2024, closing the spread between the official and parallel exchange rates.”

FX inflows through official and autonomous channels surged by 89% in Q4 2024, compared to just 8% in Q4 2023. Fitch anticipates modest depreciation in the short term but expects improved exchange rate stability.

The CBN has also adopted a tighter monetary policy to combat inflation, raising policy rates to 27.5%—an 875 basis point increase since February 2024.

“The CBN has tightened monetary conditions through a combination of policy rate hikes to 27.5% (up 875bp since February 2024) and use of prudential and operational tools such as open market operations (at rates closely aligned to the MPR) to strengthen monetary policy transmission after years of financial repression.”

Fitch forecasts Nigeria’s inflation to average 22% in 2025—significantly higher than the 4.3% median for ‘B’ rated countries—and to decline to 20% in 2026.

“We project inflation, which hit 23.2 percent year-on-year in February under the recently rebased consumer price index (CPI), to average 22% in 2025 (‘B’ median 4.3%) and 20% in 2026.”

However, the agency warned against premature loosening of monetary policy, which could undermine recent gains.

External Reserves and Current Account Performance

The country’s external reserves have improved significantly, rising from a low of $32 billion in mid-2024 to $41 billion by year-end, before falling slightly to $38 billion due to increased debt service obligations.

“Gross official reserves reached $41 billion by the end of 2024, recovering from a low of $32 billion in mid-2024, but later declined to $38 billion due to increased debt service payments.”

Although gross reserves are high, Fitch highlighted a lack of clarity in their composition. The CBN recently estimated net reserves at $23 billion at end-2024, up from $4 billion the previous year.

“There is a lack of detail on the composition of reserves amid recent indications by the central bank that place net reserves at USD23 billion at end-2024, up from about USD4 billion at end-2023.”

FX swaps now make up about 14% of gross reserves, down from 25% in November 2024, as the CBN works to reduce FX liabilities.

Fitch also expects Nigeria’s current account surplus—estimated at 6.6% of GDP in 2024—to average 3.3% of GDP over 2025 and 2026.

Oil Sector Outlook and Trade Risks

Nigeria’s oil sector is poised for growth, with the Dangote refinery expected to increase capacity from 0.55 million barrels per day (mbpd) to 0.65 mbpd by Q2 2025. Crude oil production (excluding condensates) is also projected to rise.

“We expect crude oil production (excluding condensates) to increase in 2025-2026, averaging 1.43 mbpd, from 1.34 mbpd in 2024, helped by improved onshore surveillance and increased investments by local oil companies.”

However, Fitch noted that underinvestment and outages continue to cap production below pre-2019 levels.

On the international trade front, the agency downplayed the impact of U.S. tariffs, citing Nigeria’s oil-related exports—which make up 92% of total U.S.-bound exports—as largely unaffected.

“The impact of US tariffs on Nigeria’s trade position with the US will be limited, amid the exclusion of oil-related exports, which accounted for about 92 percent of total exports (nearly 2 percent of GDP) to the US in 2023.”

Still, Fitch cautioned that falling oil prices pose a more significant risk to Nigeria’s fiscal and external positions.

“Lower oil prices pose a bigger risk as they would weaken external buffers and fiscal metrics and test the new policy framework.”

Despite these risks, Fitch concluded that Nigeria’s greater policy flexibility leaves it better equipped to weather economic shocks.

Air Peace pledges free evacuation, medicals for trafficked Nigerian girls in Ivory Coast

xAir Peace has promised to bring back the trafficked underaged Nigerian girls from Ivory Coast, and also give them free medical care.

Allen Onyema, the airline’s Chairman, made the announcement in a statement. He called for collective efforts to discourage trafficking, emphasising its inhumane and ungodly nature.

Recall that activist, VeryDarkMan (Martins Vincent Otse), raised the alarm over the underaged Nigerian girls trafficked to Ivory Coast.

Reacting, Air Peace boss, Onyema, offered free flight back home and medical care for the Nigerian girls.

He “expressed deep concern and condemnation over the recent discovery of Nigerian underaged girls trafficked to Ivory Coast”.

    ‘We will bring them home’

Onyema said: “We should discourage trafficking of any kind. It is inhumane and callous. It is absolutely ungodly and a good example of man’s inhumanity to man.

“We, in Air Peace, are ready to bring our fellow citizens back home free off charge.

“Besides that, we are going to send all of them to Duchess International Hospital in Ikeja for free medical examination and treatment.

“While we implore the Nigerian Embassy in Cote D’Ivoire to assemble them and reach out to us, we equally call on the Federal Government to take charge of their education while reuniting them with their families.”

  • Nigerians have no business being poor, says Obasanjo

Nigerians have no business being poor, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that Nigerians have no business being poor with the country’s vast resources.

He said that the nation is abundantly blessed but is suffering from the mismanagement of its resources.

Obasanjo said this at a dinner organised in his honour by Abia Government on Friday at the Government House, Umuahia.

He said: “Nigerians have no business with poverty because God has given us all that we need.

“If we are mismanaging what God has given us, we do not have God to blame, we have ourselves to blame.”

The former president praised the efforts of Gov. Alex Otti of Abia in transforming the state, noting the wide public acclaim of his administration’s performance.

He affirmed the governor’s impact on governance in the state and urged him to continue to do well.

Obasanjo added that if Nigeria had 18 governors doing well in their responsibilities as leaders, “we will build the country up”.

He reiterated his concern in the well-being of Nigerians and the quality of governance they receive.

“For me, whether you don’t greet me or I greet you and you don’t answer, what is important to me is that the people of this country are getting what they deserve and what they deserve is good governance,” he said.

Obasanjo recalled an earlier advisory he gave former Minister of Transport, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, during his tenure in office.

He said that Amaechi was not aware of a pre-existing national railway development plan and had to be directed to the archives to find it.

“I believe that even if you don’t like me if I have pieces of advice to give you, as I did when you were Minister for Transport, I will give the advice.

“You didn’t know that we had a national plan for railway for this country, to reach every state capital as we have them now and I told you to go into the archives, it is there.

“But again, I believe as Minister of Transport, you got a bit of it right, you got a bit of it wrong.”

In his speech, the governor acknowledged the support he received from the former president.

He said that the importance of vision and perseverance in leadership could never be overlooked, recounting the challenges he faced over his decade-long political journey.

“Once you have vision, you have to keep to it. It took us ten years to get here, the two elections we contested from 2015 to 2019, we won clearly but they were all stolen.

“A lot of people had given up hope and said it wasn’t going to work, but I was sure that I heard clearly from God,” he said.

He said his administration had embarked on massive reforms in the education sector to improve access to quality education in Abia.

Also, Amaechi called on political actors in Abia to begin early preparations for the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the value of a good administration was often only realised after a less competent one takes over.

He pointed out that this had become the experience with many former leaders, but Obasanjo had continually stood out because of his visionary leadership style.

“In your case, no matter who becomes president, you have always stood out,” Amaechi said.

He described quality leadership as crucial for development and in order not to experience its absence, the people of Abia must support capable leaders like Otti in the next elections.

“APC and other parties are already mobilising, if we don’t prepare now, we may lose out completely.

“We must not only protect what we have but also ensure that we come back in 2028 to celebrate true democratic success,” he added.

In separate speeches, the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency, Chief Ginger Onwusibe and the acting National Secretary of Labour Party, Sen. Darlington Nwokocha, expressed delight in being part of Abia’s success story.

They thanked  Obasanjo for his continued support for the Otti-led administration and commended the governor for the equitable developmental strides across all local government areas. (NAN)

US charges man with Trump assassination threat

A US man posting content online as “Mr Satan” has been charged with threatening to assassinate President Donald Trump and other government officials, the Department of Justice announced Friday.

Shawn Monper, 32, was detained and charged in a federal criminal complaint with “making threats to assault and murder” Trump and other US officials, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

In a statement, the DOJ said the FBI received an emergency message about threats posted on YouTube by a user who identified himself as “Mr Satan,” whose internet activity was determined to correspond with Monper’s residence.

Monper is coincidentally from Butler, Pennsylvania where Trump was nearly assassinated during a campaign rally in July.

Shortly after Trump’s inauguration in January, Monper obtained a firearms permit and commented from his account that he had “bought several guns and been stocking up on ammo since Trump got in office,” the DOJ said.

On February 17 he wrote: “Nah, we just need to start killing people, Trump, Elon, all the heads of agencies Trump appointed, and anyone who stands in the way,” referring to Trump’s billionaire advisor Elon Musk.

“Remember, we are the majority, MAGA is a minority of the country, and by the time its time to make the move, they will be weakened, many will be crushed by these policies, and they will want revenge too. American Revolution 2.0,” he said, according to the DOJ.

Then on March 4, in a YouTube video titled “Live: Trump’s address to Congress,” Monper said he was “going to assassinate him myself,” the DOJ added.

Monper hails from Butler township, scene of a shooting last July 13 that nearly took Trump’s life, when a would-be assassin’s bullet grazed the Republican’s ear at an outdoor campaign rally. One person was killed and three were injured.

“Rest assured that whenever and wherever threats of assassination or mass violence occur, this Department of Justice will find, arrest, and prosecute the suspect to the fullest extent of the law and seek the maximum appropriate punishment,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in the statement.

A detention hearing is scheduled for April 14.
