McGregor’s White House remarks draw criticism from Irish leaders

Irish political leaders have said Conor McGregor does not speak for Ireland after he visited the White House for a St Patrick’s Day meeting with US President Donald Trump.

Earlier, McGregor told reporters that he was going to voice concerns about immigration issues in Ireland when he spoke to the president.

Accompanied by his partner and four children, the controversial MMA fighter praised the president’s work ethic as “inspiring” as he met him in the Oval Office.

Trump hailed McGregor’s own work rate, and described him as “fantastic”.

Last week, during a meeting at the White House with Taoiseach (Irish PM) Micheál Martin, the US president praised McGregor’s tattoos.

The fighter also attended President Trump’s inauguration in January.

In 2024, a woman who accused McGregor of raping her in a Dublin hotel won a claim against him for damages in a civil case.

A jury found that he had assaulted her and ordered him to pay more than €248,000 (£206,000).

Earlier on Monday, McGregor appeared at the White House press briefing room lectern with press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who confirmed the meeting was scheduled for later in the day.

Ms Leavitt said she “couldn’t think of a better guest to have with us on St Patrick’s Day”.

The fighter said he planned to “raise the issues the people of Ireland face”.

He accused the Irish government of “abandoning” the voices of the people of Ireland as he criticised immigration policies.

“What is going on in Ireland is a travesty,” he said.

“Our money is being spent on overseas issues that is nothing to do with the Irish people,” he added.

McGregor has previously spoken out against Ireland’s policies on immigration and asylum seekers.

Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Micheál Martin was critical of McGregor’s comments, posting on social media: “St Patrick’s Day around the world is a day rooted in community, humanity, friendship and fellowship.

“Conor McGregor’s remarks are wrong and do not reflect the spirit of St Patrick’s Day, or the views of the people of Ireland,” Martin added.

    McGregor ‘doesn’t speak for Ireland’

Tánaiste (Irish deputy prime minister) Simon Harris said the MMA fighter has visited Washington DC in a “personal capacity” and that he is not representing the country.

“He doesn’t speak for Ireland. He doesn’t speak for the people of Ireland. He has no mandate to do such,” Harris said to reporters in New York.

He said the president is “perfectly entitled” to invite whoever he wishes to the White House.

“But let me be very clear, Conor McGregor is not here in the United States representing Ireland or the people of Ireland.”

Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) assembly member Matthew O’Toole described McGregor’s White House appearance as an “insult to the island of Ireland” and “deeply depressing”.

“That Trump and his administration thought on Ireland’s national day to invite and clearly make a huge effort to platform and amplify McGregor, who is an appalling individual, is frankly beyond the pale,” he told BBC News NI.

On Monday, McGregor was also pictured alongside Elon Musk in the Oval Office.

Mr Musk is a close ally of the US president and is leading efforts to reduce the size of the federal government.

  • I was close to dying in car crash – Antonio

I was close to dying in car crash – Antonio

Michail Antonio does not know how he crashed his car into the tree. All he knows is that he did.

“The police came and when they found me I was in between the two seats. I wasn’t actually in the driver’s seat,” he recalls.

“They said it looked like I was trying to climb out of the window, but because my leg was so badly broken the pain probably stopped me from being able to get out.”

The first pictures of his crumpled Ferrari, which struck a tree in Epping Forest on a stormy Saturday in early December, were shared on social media and left people questioning whether Antonio was still alive.

The incident left West Ham’s record Premier League goalscorer in hospital for more than three weeks with a broken leg – and facing a gruelling journey back to fitness.

Today, Antonio insists he will play again at the highest level, and feels he has been given “another chance at life” after he was “close to dying”.

The 34-year-old sat down for an exclusive interview with BBC One’s Morning Live presenter Helen Skelton to reflect on his “horrendous accident”.

What happened on the day of the crash?

Saturday, 7 December had started out as a typical morning for Antonio, with West Ham training for a televised league match against Wolves two days later.

He remembers the weather “was windy, wet and horrific” on a day when the Met Office had issued warnings for Storm Darragh.

Antonio had felt “lazy” when his partner asked him to retrieve some bags from their other car before he set off, so instead he took his Ferrari – which he says he had doubts about.

“The back of the car kept swinging out on me, so I didn’t feel safe,” he says. “I had had it for three weeks and I was already thinking about giving it back.”

It was a decision that changed everything, but when asked what he remembers about the crash itself – which occurred on his way home – his answer is “nothing”.

“It’s weird, because the whole way through this, I have been told that I was awake and was speaking to everybody – the police, the people, and the person who found me,” he says.

“My leg was completely shattered and they got me out and put a splint on it by the side of the car.

“Everyone believed I got an air ambulance out, but the helicopter couldn’t get off the ground because of the storm, so I was driven to the hospital.”

Three weeks ago, Antonio went to see the remains of his car at the scrapyard.

“It gave me a weird feeling in my stomach. It just made me realise how close I was to dying. I had seen the pictures but it was 10 times worse in person. The car was an absolute mess. It was difficult for me.”

    How bad is Antonio’s injury?

The first memory Antonio has following the crash is a brief one on the Sunday when he was being spoken to by a scared friend – his long-time agent Mike Appiason.

By Monday, he was able to send a supportive message to his team-mates before their win over Wolves.

“I shattered my femur bone in four different places,” he says. “I had one single keyhole surgery. They put a pole in my thigh with four bolts, so screws and bolts to knit it back together.

“My first surgeon said he didn’t want me to put any weight on my leg for three months, which is around about now, and you can see that I am walking.

“We got a second specialist who said I needed to start putting weight on it, increasing from 10% up to 100% within three weeks.

“But I kept my crutches for a further two weeks. Overall, they say it will be between six to 12 months before my leg starts healing properly.”

Antonio was also keen to set the record straight over talk on social media that he had either been drinking or taken drugs.

He explains: “I was travelling back from training and, anyway, I’ve never taken drugs in my life. I’ve said I like a drink. But in this situation, there were no drugs, there was no drink. That’s been ruled out and confirmed by the police.”

Antonio has spoken about how therapy helped him cope with the death of his father and break-up of his previous marriage, which meant he struggled to celebrate West Ham’s Conference League win in 2023.

When asked how he would have reacted to the crash had he not previously had therapy, he says: “I wouldn’t have processed it at all, or what I would have done would be to push it down and been angry or aggressive.

“Since the crash, I’ve been more emotional than I have ever been in my life, but I feel like it’s better. Therapy is one of the best things that’s happened to me in my life.”

    Will Antonio play football again?

The next big question – can you be the Antonio of before? “Yes, 100%. I will play again,” he replies.

But there was one moment where he doubted it. Two weeks ago, his physiotherapists asked if he had career-ending injury insurance. “I didn’t sleep a wink that night,” he says, with a smile and shake of his head.

Antonio’s road to recovery will be a relentless journey requiring countless hours in the gym, with running the next step in his pursuit of fitness.

“That’s what I am focused on and why I am working six days a week. I’ve always been positive from this situation. It’s a horrendous accident, and it’s a massive injury,” he says.

“It’s the biggest injury I’ve ever had in my career. But the fact that I’m already two to three months ahead of where I should be, I know that I’ll play again, and I know that once I’m playing the game I’ll get the sharpness back.

“I was one of the quickest at West Ham. So my body wasn’t the body of a 34-year-old before I had the accident anyway. I can still be sharp and still do the business.

“People have always doubted me. My mental strength is something that I’ve always believed in and this is just another setback, and it is not going to stop me.”

‘I almost wasn’t there for my children’

When Antonio went to see his destroyed Ferrari at the scrapyard, the fear of not seeing his six children grow up left him with a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach.

“The most difficult part is that I almost wasn’t there for my children,” Antonio says. “It’s just made me happy, positive about life, because I’ve got another chance at life.

“During this, we kept it away from the kids. My eldest saw it, and he struggled with it. He’s 13, and obviously people were showing photos of the car.

“So he came down and saw me in the hospital. But the younger ones, they never really knew how bad the situation was. We kind of avoided letting them get on the internet.”

The one major concession Antonio has made is he will not be driving any fast cars for a little while.

“I’ve always been a fan and friend of sports cars and old classics, but I can’t lie to you, sports cars are not my friends,” he says.

“So right now, I have a Mercedes people carrier and my brother is my driver. For now, anyway, I’m staying far away from sports cars.”

But Antonio added that he did overcome his first drive since the crash last week. “I don’t remember the trauma so I have no nerves.

“The only problem I have with it right now is every time I get behind the wheel, I worry that even if something small happens, it will be like ‘ah, Michail’s been in a crash again’, and that kind of negativity gets in my mind and gives me a bit of nerves.”

At the time of the crash, Julen Lopetegui was Antonio’s manager at West Ham but the Spaniard was sacked and has been replaced by Graham Potter.

Being so badly injured while having a new boss appointed at the club concerned Antonio initially.

“That was horrendous for me,” he adds. “I’m not gonna lie, it was one of the hardest things for me, the fact a new manager came in and I wasn’t there to show what I can do, with my contract up at the end of the season.

“It was difficult for me at the time, but the only thing I can focus on is me and making sure I am right.

“One thing I have had to realise is that it doesn’t matter and I can’t rush myself and put myself out there when I am not right because it would make things worse.

“If I rush myself then that will be the reason I didn’t get a contract. As long as I make sure I am right then I know I will have done everything I can.”

West Ham have funded Antonio’s rehabilitation, including a trip to Dubai that involved physio, rest, recovery and meditation.

The club have helped to organise charity initiatives to raise funds for the emergency services involved in rescuing him from the wreckage, including when the entire team warmed up in Antonio shirts before auctioning them off.

Further support came from team-mate Jarrod Bowen who held up Antonio’s shirt when scoring against Wolves at the London Stadium.

And Antonio received a warm reception when he walked on to the pitch at the recent home game against Newcastle while he was off crutches.

“The love feels good,” he continues. “When I got into football, I did it as a hobby and didn’t support any clubs.

“Now I am definitely a West Ham fan. What the club did for me, the support they gave me on and off the field, the hospitals and the specialists, was unbelievable. I thank the club, the fans, the emergency services, the people around me.”

And on being stopped in the street by fans eager to know if he will return, he adds: “I like that people care enough to come and ask me the question, so I don’t mind repeating it 1,000 times. The goal is to be back scoring goals.”

George, son of ex-Kaduna Dep Gov laid to rest in southern Kaduna

It was a sad mood as sympathisers gathered on Friday at Kamrum, Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, to pay their final respect to late George Stephen Shekari, who passed away at the age of 52.

Late George Stephen Shekari was the first son of the former Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Late Stephen Shekari.

While delivering a condolence message during the funeral service at ECWA Church Kamrum, former Governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi described the deceased as a brilliant individual whose life was tragically cut short at a time when his contributions were most needed.

Makarfi, represented by a former Minister of Aviation and immediate past Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Mr. Felix Hassan Hyat, encouraged the family to take solace in the belief that he now rests at Jesus’ feet.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Rijo Shekari, a cousin to the deceased and a Senior Legislative Aide in the office of the Deputy President of the Senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria, expressed profound gratitude to all who stood by them during their time of grief.

He emphasized the importance of continued prayers and support for the bereaved family, particularly the wife and children of the deceased, urging the church and the community to uphold them in faith and solidarity.

Mourners were deeply moved by a powerful sermon delivered by Rev. Solomon Guruza Ubasi, titled “Longing for the Home of Righteousness.”

Taking his text from Job 19:25-27, Rev. Guruza reminded the congregation of the believer’s ultimate hope—eternal life with God. He described the home of righteousness as a place of peace, joy, and reunion with the Lord, urging everyone to live in readiness.

“This world is not our final home,” he said. “No matter the trials we face, we must keep our eyes on eternity, just as Job did.”

While addressing the grieving family, Rev. John encouraged them to find comfort in the faith and legacy of the deceased, assuring them that for the righteous, death is not the end but a transition to a glorious home with God.

The service was marked by solemn tributes from family and friends, reflecting on the life and impact of George Stephen Shekari. As his body was laid to rest, Rev. Guruza’s words remained fresh in the hearts of all present, he said in Christ, farewells’ never final.

Obi donates N20m to Colleges of Nursing in Ahiara and Ihiala

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has donated N20 million to two Colleges of Nursing Sciences in Imo and Anambra states—Holy Rosary College of Nursing, Ogbe, in Ahiara Catholic Diocese, Mbaise, and the College of Nursing Sciences, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala.

During his visit to both institutions on Friday, the former Governor of Anambra State presented a cheque of N10 million to each college. At the Holy Rosary College of Nursing, he handed over the cheque to the Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Most Rev Simeon Nwobi, at the construction site of the college. Similarly, at Our Lady of Lourdes, Ihiala, he presented the donation to the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Miss Anigbo Chisom Mary, in the presence of hundreds of excited students.

In his remarks, Obi underscored the significance of his donation, stressing that healthcare and education are critical to national development and the well-being of citizens. Commending the Catholic Diocese of Ahiara for embarking on the college of nursing project, he described it as a vital contribution to securing a better future for Nigeria. “My Lords, what you are doing is a great service to our country,” Obi said. “This donation is not a favour to you, but a recognition of your efforts in nation-building. I will always support this project because it is about securing a better future for our country.”

Obi further stated that the government must prioritise quality education, including the prompt payment of teachers’ salaries. He emphasised the need for free and accessible education at the primary and secondary levels, both in public and private schools. He assured that he would continue to support the colleges of nursing to ensure they become centres of excellence in training healthcare professionals who will contribute to national development.

Expressing his gratitude, Bishop Nwobi commended Obi for his relentless commitment to building a better Nigeria. “We are deeply grateful for this generous donation,” the bishop said. “You have been doing so much for our country, and we continue to pray for God’s will to be done in your life.” He also confirmed that the college would officially commence operations next year and invited Obi to attend the opening ceremony.

Speaking on the sidelines, Very Rev. Fr Okoro revealed that the college’s construction began in late 2021 and, in addition to nursing and midwifery, would also offer courses in pharmacy, cardiology, and laboratory sciences.

At Our Lady of Lourdes, Ihiala, SUG President Miss Anigbo Chisom Mary, speaking on behalf of her fellow students, expressed gratitude to Obi for his unwavering support. “You have always shown us compassion and care,” she said. “You are our role model, and we will not let you down.”

Telegram founder Durov allowed to temporarily leave France

Telegram founder Pavel Durov has been allowed to temporarily leave France, where he is charged with multiple infractions linked to allegedly enabling organised crime, sources told AFP.

“He departed France this morning,” a source familiar with the case told AFP, adding Durov had left with the authorities’ permission.

According to another source, an investigating judge had authorised him to leave France for “several weeks.”

A third source said Durov had departed for Dubai.

A Telegram spokeswoman declined to comment when reached by AFP, saying the company would later issue a statement.

The investigating judge accepted Durov’s request to modify conditions of his supervision several days ago, said the source close to the case.

Durov, now 40, was sensationally detained at Le Bourget airport outside Paris in August 2024 and charged with a litany of violations related to the popular messaging app he founded. He had been banned from leaving the country.

After days of questioning, he was charged with several counts of failing to curb extremist and terrorist content and released on a five-million-euro ($5.6 million) bail.

Durov — who holds Russian, French and United Arab Emirates passports — initially criticised his arrest, but he has since announced steps appearing to bow to Paris’s demands.

In January, the Telegram founder told investigating magistrates in France that he “realised the seriousness of all the allegations”, according to a source.

Abducted winner of Quranic recitation competition, father, sibling still alive — Katsina govt

The Katsina State Government says the winner of the Quranic recitation competition, Abdulsalam Rabiu-Faskari, his father and brother are still alive, but in the custody of their abductors.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr Bala Salisu-Zango, on Friday in Katsina.

It could be recalled that the victims were abducted two days ago on their way to Faskari from Katsina, after they were honoured by Gov. Dikko Radda, for his outstanding performance during the National Qur’anic recitation competition held in Kebbi.

Salisu-Zango said he would represent Nigeria in the recitation of the whole Quran at the forthcoming international edition of the competition.

“The attention of Katsina state Government has been drawn to the recent media reports and condolence messages contained in a press statement signed by Special Advisor to Kebbi Governor on Media and Publicity.
“It was to the effect that the kidnapped winner of National Qur’anic recitation competition, Hafizul Qur’an and ABU final year Medical student from Katsina State, Abdussalam Rabiu-Faskari was killed by his abductors.
“We appreciate the kind gesture, concern and compassion shown by the Kebbi Government over the unfortunate incident,

“We,. however, wish to state that the Quranic recitation competition winner, Rabiu-Faskari, his father and brother were really abducted by bandits.

“But information reaching the government indicates that, they are still alive and healthy in the custody of their abductors,” he said.

Salisu-Zango further said that as at Friday, their abductors were demanding for a ransom of N30 million from their family.

The commissioner qouted Radda as describing the kidnapping of the young talented student, alongside his father and brother as unfortunate.

“My heart is with the victims, their family, relatives and friends, and we pray they safely regain freedom.
“Government will take concrete actions to rescue and ensure the safe return of all the abducted victims, as rescue effort is being put in place,” Radda said.

The Governor then urged the security agents to put all hands on deck to ensure the safe rescue of the victims

Radda reiterated the commitment of his administration to addressing the prevailing security challenges in the state.

He further called on the people to fervently pray for the safety and freedom of Rabiu-Faskari and all others in the hands of those evil abductors.

  • 2027: Oyetola’s leadership’ll pave way for APC’s victory in Osun — ex-Speaker

    2027: Oyetola’s leadership’ll pave way for APC’s victory in Osun — ex-Speaker

The immediate past Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye has described the leadership style of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola would pave way for the All Progressives Congress, APC’s victory in both the 2026 governorship and the general elections in 2027.

Owoeye in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Friday in Osogbo, the APC is stronger in the state today than in 2022, adding that the Minister has done a lot to reposition the party since his appointment as Minister.

According to him, the President Bola Tinubu’s development efforts in the state has further attracted the party to the teeming populace, especially the award of the N12bn road construction in Ilesa to Eti-Oni, Atakumosa East LGA, the newly created Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies, Iragbiji, the Alternative High School for Girls in Osogbo among others.

“Oyetola’s consistent food distribution programme during all festive periods provides succour to the people of Osun, his statewide Medical Outreach, facilitation of employment for the youths in various MDAs, and FG projects in Osun are some of the impacts that stand him out. He is also a major financier of the party, its various activities and efforts to wrestle power from the PDP-led regime in Osun State.

“It is important for us to also laud the superlative performances of Oyetola in that newly created Ministry. His approach to governance and administrative acumen has reinvigorated the key agencies under him, which adjudged him the overall best-performing ministry in the Ease of Doing Business ranking by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC).”

“For us in Osun, Oyetola has the blueprint for a Tinubu victory in 2027. He is personally playing his part, he has charged us all to play our part, and I am happy that President Tinubu is also making it easier with his interventions and economic reforms”, he added.

The former Speaker further berated the Ademola Adeleke-led administration in the state for resorting to cheap blackmail instead of concentrating on delivering good governance to the people of the state.

“I have been following the recent media drama of the Adeleke administration accusing former governor Oyetola of misappropriation of a $20 million World Bank health grant. It is disappointing to see the unnecessary circus the current regime has created against allegations that are baseless and unfounded.

“What the Osun State government has done is to effectively shut the door against future grants and donor-assisted projects from development support institutions. Why is the governor always putting the cart before the horse? Couldn’t he have waited till the completion of the investigation by the anti-graft agencies before casting aspersions on offficials of the last administration who served their state diligently? What manner of approach to governance is this, all in the name of cheap politics?.

“I remembered when he came in as governor, in his maiden meeting with members of the State traditional council, he said the State was in debt to the tune of over N400bn. As the then Speaker and out of concern for what his statement portends for the state, I had to approach the Debt Management Office (DMO) for clarity, and the figures they gave were different from what the governor was bandying.

“The interest and advancement of the state should be of utmost concern to any serious administration, but Osun seems to be unfortunate with good leadership at the moment”, he added.

  • Opposition no longer safe with recruitment of Osun PDP members into Amotekun – APM

Opposition no longer safe with recruitment of Osun PDP members into Amotekun – APM

The Allied Peoples Movement, APM, in Osun State has disclosed that the members of opposition parties are no longer safe with the alleged recruitment of members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, into the State Amotekun Corps.

APM in a statement by its Chairman, Mr Adewale Adebayo on Friday, following protest by some recruit of alleged nepotism by the corps authority, he said the party is concerned that Amotekun could jettison its core mandate of securing the state for political patronage.

It reads, “We are disturbed by the protest by the well meaning Osun State residents who applied but were deliberately screened out by the leadership of Amotekun because they are not members of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

“Recruiting over 1,000 PDP members in Osun State is a motive to silent the opposition voices and a way to gag anyone who oppose the action of the government. It is so shocking that Amotekun which is a child of necessity for securing the state could be reduced to political platform.

“The forms that they threw open is just a way to clean the already prepared script to tell the people that it was for everyone, meanwhile the available slots were shared among PDP.

“We are demanding that both Corps Commandant and Field Commandant of the outfit should tender apology to the candidates and entire people of the state. Thereafter, they should resign their positions so that Amotekun will continue to carry the image that the outfit is apolitical”, he added.

  • IPOB’s lawyer accuses Anambra govt of violating citizens’ rights, wants all arrested charged to court

IPOB’s lawyer accuses Anambra govt of violating citizens’ rights, wants all arrested charged to court

Owerri – The Counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, on Saturday called on the government of Anambra state to charge to court some persons, Ejiofor alleged were arrested for the past five weeks in the state.

Ejiofor spoke in a statement to newsmen in Owerri while commenting on what he tagged as “violations of citizens rights.”

According to him, “Today March 15, 2025, marks five full weeks since several citizens of Anambra State were arbitrarily arrested and detained in a private facility controlled by the state government. Shockingly, they have not been charged with any offence or brought before any court of law. This is a flagrant violation of their fundamental rights.

“More disturbing is the fact that these individuals were not placed under the custody of the Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), or even the military for investigation. Instead, they have remained unlawfully detained without any formal explanation from the state government. Regrettably, some misguided individuals are applauding this clear infraction of the law.

“For five weeks, the Anambra State Government has failed to provide any official briefing or statement to the public on the status of these detainees. This lack of transparency is unacceptable. We are often quick to criticize the Federal Government or its agencies for abuse of power, including enforced disappearances and illegal detentions. Yet, here we are, witnessing similar acts at the state level.

“Security is a collective responsibility. I have always championed active citizen participation in combating insecurity by providing credible intelligence to security agencies. It is on record that I was among the fearless voices that condemned the heinous activities of criminals masquerading as agitators when they were wrecking havoc and unleashing terror on our people. At the height of these atrocities, I publicly urged Governor Soludo to deploy all legal means to decisively tackle these elements. I emphasized that they were not genuine agitators but criminals who should be treated as such.

“At that time, many who now attack those speaking the truth were too weak and afraid to voice their opinions. I, on the other hand, put my life, my family, and my staff at risk by standing against these criminals. I am fully aware that intelligence reports indicated several plots to eliminate me, yet I remained steadfast, trusting in God’s protection.”

It was his view that; “That being said, I want to make my position crystal clear: I, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, will never support anyone proven to be aiding or abetting criminal activities in our land. If there is verifiable evidence implicating or linking any individual to the commision of any crime, the law must take its course.”

Ejiofor recalled that; “I have previously commended the Anambra State Government’s Agụnechemba security outfit for its efforts in restoring order. The security outfit has done well, in restoring some level of security in the state, and the Soludo administration deserves credit for its achievements. However, I have always stressed the need for professionalism and adherence to rules of engagement by security agents, to minimize casualties and avoid unnecessary errors.”

“For those misconstruing my stance, let me make it clear- I am not attacking the state government. I have consistently spoken out against infractions by the Federal Government and its agencies, and I will not hesitate to do the same when our own state government errs. Political affiliations or fear of the unknown should not prevent us from speaking truth to power. I admire Governor Soludo’s vision and commend his efforts, but respect for the rule of law must remain non-negotiable,” he concluded.

A 16-year-old girl, Maryam Samuel, allegedly committed suicide at Kaltungo community in Kaltungo Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesman of the Gombe State Police Command, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident on Saturday in Gombe, said the girl committed suicide by hanging on a tree.

He said the incident occured on March 14, barely 24 hours after the deceased left home to fetch firewood.

“On Friday, at about 9:00 a.m, a case of suicide was reported at Kaltungo Divisional Headquarters by the village head of Kalarin.

However, a source at the deceased’s family, who pleaded anonymity, alleged that the girl was pregnant by her boyfriend, a development which enraged her parents.

The source said the girl was discovered to had been visiting her lover, and pregnant during an interaction between the parents and the boyfriend.
