Family of kidnapped retired director seeks IG’s intervention

The family of Mr Emmanuel Ofobrukueta, a retired director kidnapped in Delta, has urged Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene for his immediate rescue.

The Principal Partner of Forthright Chambers, Mr Frank Tietie, a solicitor for the Ofobrukueta family, made the appeal at a news conference in Abuja after his law firm submitted a petition to the I-G on the matter.

According to Tietie, the victim, who retired six years ago from the Post-Primary Education Board (PPEB) in Asaba, Delta, was kidnapped by armed men on Jan. 13 in front of his house in Mosogar, near Sapele, Delta State.

He stated that Ofobrukueta was abducted on the day he was scheduled to travel to Asaba to process and collect his pension payment.

“The victim had since been in the kidnappers’ den for the past two months in spite efforts by the Delta State Police Command to rescue him.

“The victim’s family had been going through pains.

“As part of effort to rescue the victim, the Ofobrukueta family two days after the incident engaged in some self-help activities including the engagement of a private tracking company to get the victim rescued,” Tietie said.

He added that a sum of N4,020,000 was paid as ransom to the kidnappers through certain individuals who volunteered to deliver the money to the abductors.

“Unfortunately, in spite of efforts by his family, Ofobrukueta was yet to be released by his abductors and no word had been heard from him or the abductors even after the ransom was paid,” Tietie said.

He noted that some Ofobrukueta family members suspected the victim’s close associates, including the ransom bearers, of collaborating with the kidnappers.

Tietie added that while the victim’s family had begun to lose hope, as solicitors to the family, they remained confident in the ability of the Nigeria Police to handle the case.

“I urge the I-G to directly take interest in the matter of Mr Ofobrukueta.

“We believe the I-G has the resources and capable men and women of the Nigeria Police Force to deploy to Delta or any part of Nigeria to ensure that the victim is rescued.

“The I-G, as a matter of social responsibility on the part of the government, should ensure that Ofobrukueta is accounted for as a citizen of Nigeria,’’ he said.

Tietie also urged the Delta State Government to take an interest in the matter to ensure Ofobrukueta’s safe rescue, appealing that the victim’s family should not be abandoned.

He further called on the Nigeria Police and relevant authorities to ensure the rescue of all victims held in kidnappers’ den.

Doctor removed 3 litres of pus from Abia farmer’s abdomen; Police investigate death

The Abia State Police Command, said it had launched investigation into the death of one Joseph Urum, an employee of Do Good Farm, Abiriba, Ohafia Local Government Area of the state, vowing to unravel the truth behind the death.

This is as the doctor who attended to the deceased before he died, said about three litres of pus were extracted from his abdomen.

Meanwhile, the paramount traditional ruler of Abiriba ancient kingdom, HRM Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu (Enachoken Abiriba IV), has sued for peace, and demanded justice for both the deceased and the owner of the multi-million piggery farm.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Abia State, Maureen Chilaka, told  Vanguard that some suspects had been taken into custody over the matter.

The PPRO said personnel of the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, handling the matter, had already visited the hospital where the deceased died, and dropped a letter for the doctor on the history of treatment given to the late Joseph.

She said:”We are aware of the matter. Investigations are on-going. We have been to the hospital where he died and dropped a letter with the doctor  on treatment history before and after his death. Once we gather reasonable facts, we shall know if there is need for autopsy.”

Recall that after the death of Joseph on February 26, 2025,  his fellow workers – Oko Ukaegbu, Pastor Ejemole Ukaegbu, Maduka, Bassey, were arrested and detained by the police following allegations that he died in a questionable circumstance.

As suspicion and controversy continued to build over the matter, youths of the community reportedly threatened to burn down the piggery farm.

Meanwhile, the owner of the multi-million piggery farm, Mrs Onyinye Urum Ukaegbu Ibe, based in the United States of America,  petitioned the Inspector General of Police, seeking his intervention, and calling for thorough investigation into the matter.

The US-based investor and step-aunty of the deceased  said she established the farm to assist her relations at home.

She expressed bewilderment over  the various allegations and controversies trailing the death of Joseph, her step sister’s son.

She dismissed the allegations as false and a veiled ploy to destroy her investments.

Distancing herself from the death of the deceased, she called for autopsy to ascertain the actual cause of the death.

Mother, siblings of the deceased seek justice

The mother of the deceased, Mrs Jane Agwu Nmaju (nee Urum); his elder sister, Mrs Nne Ejituru; and younger sister, Mrs Ruth Uchechukwu, have demanded justice for the late Joseph.

The trio who spoke with newsmen in Umuahia, raised suspicion over the circumstances surrounding Joseph’s death, and demanded explanations from those who took him to hospital.

They said Joseph, prior to his death, was not complaining of any ailments, and called for autopsy to unravel the actual cause of his death.

“We don’t know what killed him. Those who were taking him round hospitals should explain to us. We want justice for him. How can he be sick at Abiriba only to be taken to Mbaise hospital to die?”

The mother of six who said she lives in Bayelsa, demanded explanations on why her son would be rushed to the hospital and surgery allegedly conducted on him without the consent of any close family member.

“They ought to have called to inform us and seek our consent before the surgery”, one of the daughters added.

Joseph’s mother who said she is the eldest in her paternal Urum family, also expressed annoyance that she was prevented from seeing Joseph’s corpse at the mortuary where she was reportedly told she could only see him after seven days of embalment.

Narrating their grief, her daughter, Nne, said:”My mother said they contacted her and asked her to agree so that Joseph could be operated on. They knew she lives in Bayelsa and it would take some time for her to arrive. Then when she told them that her daughter (Ruth) lives in Umuahia, and would join them soon, they said they were at Mbaise.

“The next they said was that he was dead. Then,  when my mother came with some family members they said he had been deposited in the mortuary and that his corpse cannot be seen until after seven days.

“So, we became surprised and suspicious. How can our brother be that sick and surgery conducted on him without our consent? Ejimole who is my mother’s step-brother ought to have told us before taking my brother to Mbaise”, Mrs Ejituru fumed.

Corroborating this account, her sister Ruth said:”When my mother told me Joseph was sick, I got to the hospital at Mbaise around 9am on February 26 and saw him on a surgical table and knew he was already lifeless. The hospital was like a shop.

“I saw that my brother already had a tear in his abdomen. I inquired from the doctor what happened. He said they didn’t run any test on him. I said: Why will they operate on him just like that? By mere looking at him, he was just lifeless. I knew he was already dead but it wasn’t I that would pronounce him dead. The doctor said his intestines were like something that was cooked.

“I told the doctor it was unfortunate he could do that kind of surgery without test or scan. I became angry and stepped out. Within 15 minutes the doctor came out and said he was done and that the operation was successful.

“After the operation, he left for about three hours. We became worried and I asked the nurse, and she said the doctor was coming. Ejimole was busy making calls”.

My story – Dr. Alexander Ohanyere

Meanwhile, when Vanguard visited Evergreen Hospital & Maternity, Onicha Ezinihitte Mbaise, Imo State, where the deceased died, the Proprietor, Dr Alexander Ohanyere, said he tried his best to save him but without success.

“I tried to give him the best services; I took some desperate measures to save him but, unfortunately they didn’t work”.

He explained that the patient was rushed to his hospital around 1:00am as an emergency case, and he tried to stabilize him before he would be wheeled into the theater for surgery but regretted that he died while efforts were still on to stabilize him.

“I got a call from a patient I had treated before, saying they had an emergency situation. So, when they came, it was already a contaminated case. I told them that the patient can’t go to the theatre due to his condition. He lacked blood, and the scan result he came with showed the intestines were perforated.

“He also had low blood pressure. We needed to stabilize him first before any surgery could be conducted on him. After some times the kidneys stopped working.

“As we kept making efforts to revive him, I noticed massive water in his abdomen. Then the quick intervention was to drain the massive water in his abdomen. I was amazed to see pus in his abdomen.

“For the abdomen to be that rotten, it means it had been bad for some weeks.

So, I removed about 10 milligram of fluid and he reacted positively to show he had relief. Then I brought a bucket and removed about three litres of pus from his abdomen.”

Responding to a question, the Family Physician who read at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, said ruptured appendicitis, low immunity, among others, could possibly cause such situation.

Asked if he conducted any surgery on the organs of  the deceased as being rumoured, Dr Ohanyere answered to the contrary, saying he did not go beyond “extracting the mass fluid in his abdomen”.

Dr Ohanyere said anyone in doubt of what happened should call for autopsy.

Meanwhile, a Doctor at Abiriba General Hospital, Dr Joshua Okereke, where the late Joseph was first taken to, said he noticed the seriousness of the matter and referred him immediately to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC Umuahia where the facilities to handle him were available.

According to him, the patient manifested symptoms of acute abdomen which required surgical emergency within 24 hours, hence his decision to refer him to a tertiary hospital for adequate attention.

“We don’t have the facility to handle him here. So, within 20 minutes, I had referred him to the FMC that has everything needed to manage his situation.

“Acute abdomen means something is wrong inside the abdominal cavity. It could be intestinal obstruction or a hole, or ulcer that has eaten the stomach. The sickness was not like something that came suddenly. Looking at him you will see he has been sick.”

Dr Okereke wondered why  he (doctor) had to be subjected to police interrogation, having referred the deceased to a higher hospital without delays.

“I’m surprised that police are involving us. The patient left here alive but very sick. Whatever happened to him later, I was not aware.”

    Farm employee speaks

One of the employees of the Do Good Farm, Mrs Confidence Nduka, told Vanguard that the deceased usually complained of loss of appetite, and would avoid his meals and rather take ‘tea’ in lieu of solid food.

She said that the deceased who was recruited towards the end of January 2025, had no issues with any co-worker, wondering where the allegation of murder was coming from.

Other staff of the farm narrated how some of the workers now in detention assisted in rushing the deceased to the hospital when he complained of stomach ache, expressing shock that anybody could come up with murder allegation.

Nnanna Urum Ukaegbu, who said the deceased was a member of their extended  family, narrated how their sister based in the US  established the farm to assist the family.

He said it sounded strange for anyone to allege murder after frantic efforts were made by the arrested co-workers to save the life of the deceased.

On why the deceased was rather taken to a clinic at Mbaise in Imo State instead of FMC Umuahia, a tertiary hospital where he was referred to by the doctor at Abiriba general hospital, it was said that he was allegedly told at FMC “to come back in the morning due to lack of space.”

The detained co-workers were quoted to have said that they got to FMC but were not attended to , and in their desperation to save the life of their brother , decided to go to Mbaise hospital based on recommended by a friend whom the doctor had once treated while practicing in Enugu.

They were said to have been told at the emergency unit to return in the morning because “there was no space.”

The source said that in their desperation to save Joseph who was not admitted at FMC, somebody suggested that they should contact the doctor at Mbaise who treated him some years ago at Enugu.

When contacted for a response, the Public Relations Officer, PRO, of FMC Umuahia,  Chief Darlington Madubuko, said the Management of the hospital would investigate the claims.

The PRO explained that sometimes if there were no bed space to admit a patient brought at odd hour at the emergency unit, the patient could be asked to come when there would be space.

Asked why a patient brought under emergency should be turned back for lack of bed space, the PRO said that the policy was adopted due to blackmail as people were posting on the social media, images of patients being attended to on the floor.

He said: ”Remember that there was no record to prove that the person you are referring to was our patient since he was not admitted. But we will investigate the matter.

“If the time they arrived was too late, and there was no bed space at the emergency unit, there is no way he would be admitted. We were admitting before even when there was no bed space but people started posting photos of patients on the floor to blackmail us”.

He explained that the hospital is usually overcrowded due to high patronage by patients from neighbouring states of Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Imo and Rivers States.

The PRO, however, said that the current management of the hospital was making spirited efforts to address the challenge of infrastructure, hinting that the new emergency building it embarked on would soon be ready.

“We are building a new emergency unit and it will soon be ready. There’s massive infrastructural development with new equipment by the current management to make sure we give the best of services”.

The Chief Medical Director, CMD, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi told Vanguard that the new Emergency building “which is triple the existing one” would be opened by the first week of April as he had just secured approval to engage 35 new nurses to boost the manpower team.

He said that the challenge of crowded bed space would have been addressed by the time the new complex becomes operational.

    Monarch

Meanwhile, the paramount traditional ruler of Abiriba ancient kingdom, HRM Eze Kalu Kalu Ogbu (Enachoken Abiriba IV), said peace had been restored to the area following his intervention.

He said that when he heard about the matter, he invited both parties to the palace for arbitration but decided to hand the matter over to the police for proper investigation due to the heavy allegations involved.

“ When I heard of the matter I invited all the parties. The siblings of the deceased told us that their brother died in questionable circumstances. So, I invited the police, and told the police: This is your area. Go and investigate and find out what happened. I’m very sure  police know what to do.”

The monarch also said he had stopped an attempt by irate locals to burn down the farm, arguing that it is not proper to destroy ones property based on mere allegations.

“By then, tension was already rising in the community. They were thinking of how to burn down the farm but I said it was not proper to destroy somebody’s investment because of allegations. So, in the interim, I asked them to put palm fronds there to allow for partial operations in the farm. We learnt there are animals in the farm and  if you lock it down they will all die.

“There are no more threats. Once we handed over the matter to the police, both families have been cooperating.”

Enachoken said his concern was justice for both the deceased and the owner of the farm.

“‘I want justice for the deceased; I want justice for the owner of the farm. After police investigations, whoever is at fault, we will know, and start addressing the fault. We don’t want another person to die. We will continue to do our best to ensure there is peace. I want peace in my community. Both parties are my subjects”.

On the rumour that some youths are threatening that the deceased would be buried on the farm, an action considered as a ploy to take over the farm from the owner, Enachoken there was no basis for such thinking.

“ We don’t address rumour. But if there is any reason for that the family will come to the community. They can’t decide that on their own. The issue of where to bury him has not arisen. If at the end of the day, he died of natural cause, why should anyone go and bury him in the farm?

“If the police are through with investigation, we will call all the parties again at the palace and tell them what to do”, Enachoken said.

  • US ends legal status for 500,000 immigrants

US ends legal status for 500,000 immigrants

The United States said Friday it was terminating the legal status of hundreds of thousands of immigrants, giving them weeks to leave the country.

President Donald Trump has pledged to carry out the largest deportation campaign in US history and curb immigration, mainly from Latin American nations.

The order affects around 532,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans who came to the United States under a scheme launched in October 2022 by Trump’s predecessor Joe Biden and expanded in January the following year.

They will lose their legal protection 30 days after the Department of Homeland Security’s order is published in the Federal Register, which is scheduled Tuesday.

That means immigrants sponsored by the program “must depart the United States” by April 24 unless they have secured another immigration status allowing them to remain in the country, the order says.

Welcome.US, which supports people seeking refuge in the United States, urged those affected by the move to “immediately” seek advice from an immigration lawyer.

The Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans (CHNV) program, announced in January 2023, allowed entry to the United States for two years for up to 30,000 migrants per month from the four countries, which have grim human rights records.

Biden touted the plan as a “safe and humane” way to ease pressure on the crowded US-Mexico border.

But the Department of Homeland Security stressed Friday that the scheme was “temporary.”

“Parole is inherently temporary, and parole alone is not an underlying basis for obtaining any immigration status, nor does it constitute an admission to the United States,” it said in the order.

Trump last week invoked rare wartime legislation to fly more than 200 alleged members of a Venezuelan gang to El Salvador, which has offered to imprison migrants and even US citizens at a discount.

  • Trump denies signing proclamation to deport Venezuelans

Trump denies signing proclamation to deport Venezuelans

US President Donald Trump on Friday denied signing a proclamation invoking a 200-year-old law to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members who were sent to prison in El Salvador.

His downplaying of his role in the affair came just hours after a federal judge called Trump’s use of the law “incredibly troublesome.”

Last weekend Trump invoked the rare wartime Alien Enemies Act to deport 238 men his administration alleged were members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and send them to a maximum security prison in El Salvador.

In a statement at the time, the White House press secretary wrote that Trump “signed a Proclamation Invoking the Alien Enemies Act” and the document additionally appears in the Federal Register with Trump’s signature on it.

But on Friday, Trump suggested his secretary of state had more to do with the matter, telling reporters: “I don’t know when it was signed because I didn’t sign it. Other people handled it.”

“Marco Rubio has done a great job and he wanted them out and we go along with that,” Trump said.

Earlier in the day a federal judge said that Trump’s use of the little-known law to deport the alleged gang members was “incredibly troublesome.”

At a hearing on Friday, James Boasberg, the chief judge of the US District Court in Washington, questioned the legality of using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act (AEA) to summarily send the Venezuelan migrants to the prison in El Salvador.

“The policy ramifications of this are incredibly troublesome and problematic and concerning,” Boasberg said.

He noted that the only previous uses of the AEA were “in the War of 1812, World War I and World War II, when there was no question there was a declaration of war and who the enemy was.”

    Troublemaker and agitator –

Last weekend Boasberg issued an emergency order against deportation of the Venezuelans and said two flights already in the air needed to turn around.

The Justice Department has claimed the planes were in international airspace when the judge issued his written order directing them to return and his jurisdiction no longer applied.

The episode earned Trump’s ire and the Republican president called on Tuesday for Boasberg’s impeachment, branding the judge a “troublemaker and agitator.”

Those remarks by Trump drew a rare public rebuke from Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts who said “impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision.”

Lee Gelernt, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed suit against the deportations along with other rights groups, noted that even during World War II “people got hearings.”

“It was not this summary removal,” Gelernt said.

“You have to be able to contest,” he said. “Otherwise anyone could be taken off the street.”

Attorneys for several of the deported Venezuelans have said their clients were not members of the Tren de Aragua gang, had committed no crimes and were targeted only because of their tattoos.

Boasberg meanwhile said at Friday’s hearing that “the government’s not being terribly cooperative at this point but I will get to the bottom of whether they violated my order.”

    ‘A bad group’ –

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday before denying signing the proclamation, Trump defended the deportations under the AEA, which was last used during World War II to intern Japanese residents.

“I was told that they went through a very strong vetting process,” Trump said. “This was a bad group… killers, murderers and people that were really bad with the worst records you’ve ever seen.”

The New York Times reported meanwhile that nearly the entire civil rights branch of the Department of Homeland Security was fired on Friday.

The department’s Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties was responsible for oversight of the administration’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.

  • I didn’t influence my nomination for Vanguard award – Gov Yusuf

I didn’t influence my nomination for Vanguard award – Gov Yusuf

KANO — Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has said that he did not influence his nomination for the 2024 Governor of the Year award by Vanguard Newspaper.

He added that he was nominated based on his performance and good work, noting that he never knew he was being closely watched.

The governor stated this while receiving a delegation from Vanguard Media Limited led by the General Editor, Jide Ajani, who was at the Kano State Government House to present the nomination letter to him.

Other members of the team included the Sunday Editor Wale Akinola and Deputy Regional Editor Dapo Akinrefon.

Governor Yusuf said he did nor know any of the Vanguard management staff before now just as he hailed the newspaper for finding him worthy of the award.

He, however, described the Good Governance Award as one which is capable of promoting unity in the country.

He said: “It (award) came to me as a surprise because this is the first time I am meeting any management staff of Vanguard Newspaper. What surprised me was that I didn’t know people were watching me and that is why it is always good to do good. Because you would never know how far it will go. Like the leader of the team said, the selection process was tedious. It goes through stages making it a herculean task. So it is only natural that they did what they did in making sure that they selected the best for this award.

“On behalf of myself, the good people of Kano State, we extend our appreciation to the management and staff of Vanguard Newspapers. Let me seize this opportunity to say that I wholeheartedly accept this nomination as Governor of the Year 2024.

“Be rest assured that Kano State Government will continue to accord you (Vanguard Newspaper) and all other journalists across the federation that have the interest of the good citizens of this country at heart. This is the main reason since we came, we have been trying to have mutual cooperation and understanding between the government and members of the press wherever they are, particularly the Vanguard Newspaper.

“Vanguard Newspaper is not from Kano, not like Triumph. Vanguard Newspaper is not from Northern Nigeria, not like Daily Trust. It is from the Southern part of Nigeria. So you can see the diversity, understanding and this is exactly what we want in Nigeria. Nigeria is one. Although, we may come from different tribes, religion, but one God created all of us for a purpose. This is why I want to seize this opportunity to call on all Nigerians to have an understanding of one another irrespective of where you come from. Let’s respect ourselves. Let’s try to come together and avoid anything that will bring about conflict especially with the insecurity situation we found ourselves. If other Nigerians, organisations could behave the way Vanguard Newspaper management did, I’m sure everybody in this country will be happy and there will be mutual understanding.”

Earlier, Mr Ajani said the process of nomination for the Vanguard award was a tedious one as it goes through proper scrutiny.

He said the governor was nominated for the award based on his performance in the areas of health and education.

  • Demand for used bras soars in Lagos

Demand for used bras soars in Lagos

That the second-hand underwear market in Lagos is experiencing significant growth is not news.

What is news, perhaps, is the rising demand for used bras.

Some women say that their decisions when buying bras are based on some factors which include affordability, durability, and quality.

Many say they go for the fairly used bras, popularly known as “Okrika”, because they are mostly available, affordable and durable.

Apart from busy markets such as Tejuosho, Balogun and Katangowa, in Lagos State, thrift bras can be found in smaller markets, stores and from roadside traders.

Mrs Peace Okeke, also known as ‘Lady Bra’ among her customers in Festac Town, in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of the state, says she has been in the trade for more than 18 years.

According to Okeke, since she has been in the business, many of her customers have come to trust high quality and first grade thrift bras.

Okeke, who sells both thrift and new bras, says for those seeking affordability, durability and comfort, these first grade second-hand bras are increasingly popular option.

“I have been in the business for the past 18 years, and I have seen how people’s preferences changed.

“Most people prefer it. One, it’s durable, long-lasting, when in use. Secondly, it’s cheap, it’s affordable. Anybody can afford it,” she said.

She notes that new bras, particularly from top-tier international brands, can cost between N15,000 and N50,000, or more, for one, but the thrift bras offering similar quality are available for as low as N5,000.

“People buy the new ones but for the average person, especially those with limited income, they can get thrift bras for N5,000 comfortably.

“You can as well get three bras for the same price as one new bra, and they will last as long as you need them to,” she explains.

While some may hesitate to buy second-hand bras, especially due to social stigma or concerns over hygiene, Okeke stresses the value in opting for thrift items.

She says thrift bras are the better choice for those on a budget.

“The economic situation in the country is hard. Some people have the money to get that of N15,000 or N20,000.

“I will advise those that cannot afford to, instead of spending N15,000 on one bra, you can use that N15,000 to get three good bras.

“They will last you as long as you want without spoiling, unless you decide to change your underwear,” she said.

On the hygiene aspect, Okeke says washing them properly with warm water and salt is the simple solution.

She says her customers have not reported any issues with hygiene and infections, and that some even use the same cleaning method for thrift underwear, which she says sells in large quantities.

“Even people go as far as using it to wash thrift pants and they wear it. No germs. No diseases,” she says.

Also, Mrs Aisha Lawal, a trader at Orile Market, says the economic hardship has pushed many women to seek out thrift bras as an alternative.

“I sell both new and fairly used bras but the fairly used ones sell faster, and many women prefer them because they are stronger, cheaper and last longer than the new ones,” she says.

Lawal, who has been in the business for over 15 years says with as low as N1,500 to N2,000, customers can get a good quality thrift bra while the new one of the same quality will cost N20,000 or more.

She says durability and affordability is the selling point of thrift bras.

“Unlike many new bras that can lose their elasticity and quality quickly, especially cheaper mass-produced ones, thrift bras often sourced from reputable regions like the UK, are known for their resilience.

“Even those with larger busts, often overlooked in mainstream stores, can find a well-fitting and long-lasting bra from thrift stores at a reasonable price.

Lawal also advises buyers to soak their thrift bras in hot water and disinfectant before washing to get rid of any germs.

Acknowledging the source of quality bras, Lawal says, “some of these fairly used bras come from the UK and USA, and they are of better quality than the cheap, new ones.”

Again, one of the concerns of people are hygiene and proper care about second-hand items, especially underwear.

According to Mrs Olayemi Adebayo, she buys thrift bras that are in good condition because they are more affordable and most times better than the new ones.

Adebayo says she has not had issues with hygiene because she washes it properly before use.

Mrs Tolu Adebiyi, who is a banker, however says that apart from quality, hygiene and perception of used items are major considerations for her when buying underwear.

“I only buy new bras. I believe undergarments should be personal and new. I don’t feel comfortable wearing something that someone else has used.

“I understand that fairly used bras are more affordable but I will rather save and buy new ones,” she says.

Remilekun Moses, a lingerie businesswoman, says thrift trends will not impact underwear brands in the market.

“They have their market share and offer more stylish and sensual designs using lluxury fabrics,’’ she says.

According to Moses, who is a digital marketer, the local and international underwear brands are expanding their reach by targeting the middle and upper class through social media.

Thrift is becoming more than just a trend, it is a lifestyle for many.

People are increasingly turning to second-hand goods, not only to save money but also because they are often made with higher quality materials that last longer.

For many, thrift bras are no longer seen as second-rate option but as smart, practical solution that deliver both quality and affordability.

Trump revokes security clearances of Biden and senior aides

US President Donald Trump made good Friday on a threat to revoke the security clearances of his predecessor Joe Biden and several senior former White House and national security officials.

The list of names stripped of their authorization to see state secrets included Biden, his family members, and former vice-president and Trump presidential rival Kamala Harris.

Former secretary of state and defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was on the list, along with Biden’s secretary of state Antony Blinken and national security advisor Jacob Sullivan.

In a memorandum to agency heads and distributed by the White House communications office, Trump said the named officials should no longer be allowed access to classified material.

“I hereby direct every executive department and agency head … to revoke any active security clearances held by the aforementioned individuals,” Trump said.

“I also direct all executive department and agency heads to revoke unescorted access to secure United States Government facilities from these individuals.”

Former US presidents and national security officials traditionally retain a security clearance as a courtesy, and some find it useful in seeking employment with private contractors.

But Trump, who continues to falsely claim that Biden schemed to steal the 2020 election, which he lost, has remained furious with his predecessor and lashes out frequently.

Trump was himself investigated for breaching security rules during the period between his first and second term in office, by storing classified White House documents in his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The investigation was wound up after Trump returned to office.

Many of the individuals on Trump’s list were high-profile political appointees of his Democratic predecessor, but former Republican lawmaker and vocal Trump critic Liz Cheney is also named.

Fiona Hill, a British-born intelligence analyst who served under both Democrat and Republican administrations, including as an advisor in Trump’s White House, is targeted.

She is joined by former colleague Alexander Vindman, a Kyiv-born retired senior officer in the US Army who fell foul of Trump after expressing concerns about White House contacts with Russia.

Abia 2027: Faces, chances of Otti’s likely challengers

AHEAD of the 2027 general elections, Abians with governorship ambition have initiated subtitle moves and behind-the-scenes activities towards realizing their dream.

Political realignments are already going on with key players strategising and repositioning themselves for triumph

Although nobody has openly declared interest in the Abia top job, a close look at the body language of some indicate that they are interested in challenging and stopping the re-election of Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party, LP.

Some of the faces and chances of Abia governorship contestants in 2027 include:

    Alex Otti

The incumbent Governor Otti came to power in 2023 on the mantra of change. The general disenchantment and frustration arising from the performances of the then Peoples Democratic Party, PDP-led administration, paved the way for him.

Apart from the popular ‘Obi wave’ which also contributed in dislodging the PDP, Abians desperately needed a change, and saw in Otti qualities they felt were needed to change the narrative and usher in a new order.

Nearly two years down the line, Otti does not seem to have disappointed the majority of Abia populace although some of his critics still believe he should quit. His performances in virtually all the frontiers, especially the massive infrastructural transformation going on in the state, have consolidated his chances for a second tenure.

Some of his signature projects include the reconstruction of the long abandoned Port Harcourt Road Aba, now nearing completion; expansion of Umuahia main entrance road to a six-lane road; reconstruction of Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Akara-Abiriba-Ohafia Road; and Abam-Ndioji-Ndiokereke- Arochukwu road among others.

Similarly, he paid attention to renovation of secondary and tertiary health institutions in the state. The Abia State University Teaching Hospital, ABSUTH, Aba which was almost in comatose, has bounced back and regained its lost accreditation. The ongoing reconstruction of 200 Primary Health Centres across the 184 political wards in the state will surely count for him in 2027.

Under Otti’s watch, the Local Governments have been made to work in Abia. The noticeable transformations in virtually all the Council headquarters courtesy of his close monitoring cannot be easily wished away.

Another major selling point of Otti in 2027 will be his decision to clear the backlog of Abia workers’ salary arrears. Otti did not only defray the arrears as he promised during the campaigns but also consistently paid workers on the 28th of every month. Pensioners were not left out as their accumulated pension arrears for which they had staged protests against past administrations, were also cleared by Otti. These beneficiaries will naturally not hesitate to renew Otti’s mandate in 2027 for continuity.

Gov. Otti’s recent approval of a jumbo pay for traditional rulers from a paltry N15,000 that some of them were getting monthly, to N250,000 each, will definitely earn him more support in the communities.

Otti equally made some efforts in the education sector, which has for the first time received a 25 per cent budgetary benchmark. He has declared free and compulsory education up to Junior secondary three, in addition to renovation of public schools and recruitment of more teachers. He has approved imprest for school heads to ensure total abolition of fees.

    Odds against Otti

Although Otti’s popularity has been on the rise, some of his critics said he has not done so well and should be sacked in 2027. His critics accuse him of not being too open about the cost of some of his road projects. They also alleged that due process was not followed in the award of some of the projects.

A major obstacle against Otti’s second term bid is the leadership crisis that has virtually consumed his Labour Party.

The governor, in a recent media parley, claimed that the disagreements in LP had been resolved but the reconciliation needs to be seen. It is not a good signal for the ruling party to have failed woefully in the local council polls in the state. For a ruling party not to be in control of the grassroots should be a source of concern.

Some LP members who worked so hard to deliver the party in 2023, felt “used and dumped” accusing the Governor of working with imported technocrats, most of whom they say, are political neophytes. Some of these embittered persons who felt unrewarded may be waiting to take their pound of flesh in 2027.

The ability of the governor to unite LP and reconcile with some aggrieved gladiators, especially the National Vice Chairman of the party, Ceeckay Igara, may determine the fate of the party in 2027.

In spite of his performance in many sectors, some still grumble that he does not believe in ‘stomach infrastructure’. They want him to scale up in that area but he has consistently said that he did not come on board to share public funds but to judiciously deploy them for the good of all. Some also say Otti does not have a formidable personal political structure that will work for him in 2027 but the governor may be banking on his achievements instead of oiling a congregation of sycophants.

The controversy surrounding the purported forfeiture of gratuities of pensioners when the governor defrayed their backlog of arrears, may be a factor in 2027 if unresolved. Despite growing appeals for the Governor to revisit the Memorandum of Agreement, MoA, signed by the State Government and the state leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, Otti has refused to bow to pressure. His opponents may cash in on this to score political points in 2027.

Despite the odds, it may be very difficult for Abians not to renew Otti’s mandate in 2027 considering the capacity he has so far demonstrated in different sectors. Even some notable chieftains of the opposition parties and prominent Abians have openly endorsed him for a second term in office.

    Ikechi Emenike

Chief Ikechi Emenike is another APC chieftain most likely to join the governorship race considering his antecedent. The Economist has been a serial contestant but without success.

He has the financial muscle to execute his governorship project should he decide to try again in 2027. He has a lot of dreams to transform the state if given the opportunity. His wife was Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States of America, during President Muhammadu Buhari’s second tenure. Chief Emenike, no doubt has the local and foreign connections needed to move Abia forward. During the administration of Buhari, Chief Emenike was the true face of APC in Abia. He was calling the shots and gave appointments to a lot of people.

His critics say he is strong-willed, unbendable, and highly opinionated. But his close allies say he is humble.

However, he is from Umuahia that has produced a governor for eight years, which may count against him in 2027.

    Ben Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ben Kalu, is currently the highest political office holder from the South East geopolitical zone. He is of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Hon. Kalu, is one of the luckiest politicians in Abia and indeed Nigeria, having achieved so much in just a few years of joining politics. He went to the Green chamber in 2019, and has been very vocal. Kalu is sagacious and mixes up well with others, hence his emergence as the Deputy Speaker after his first term. He is believed to be the force behind the orgy of defection of prominent Abia politicians to the APC.

His role in the establishment of South-East Development Commission, SEDC, is a plus for him politically. His ability to pull Nigerians including the Vice President Kashim Shettima, to his Bende country home during the launch of his pet project, Peace in the South-East, PISE-P, spoke volumes of his political clout.

He has also been vocal in the efforts to release the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. He has consistently argued that Kanu’s release would fast-track the return of peace to Igbo land. Kalu, a lawyer by training, has also sponsored many bills and motions in the Green chamber, demonstrating capacity and competence to deliver.

Although the Deputy Speaker has not openly declared interest in the Abia governorship race, some of his utterances and body language suggest he may make himself available to serve in that capacity if the coast gets clear.

Not long ago, he touted the Labour Party, when he said Otti might be the only and last Governor of LP extraction in the state. He was, however, bashed by some LP chieftains, who accused him of eyeing the Governor’s seat. They said the shoe is too big for him.

Assuming he makes up his mind to join the governorship race, pundits believe that he may not have an easy ride. His critics say he has not really achieved so much with his privileged position as the Number 6 Man in the country, a portfolio he often brags about. They say posterity will not forgive him should he fail to use his prime position to attract/compel the Federal Government to fix the Umuahia-Bende federal road which has been in a sorry state for decades.

His critics also believe that apart from his seasonal sharing of palliatives, not much has been recorded with his PISE-P project. It is yet to be seen how much peace has been restored to the zone ever since the project was launched. Some also demand accountability on the donations to the project.

Some believe that Kalu has not quite built enough structure or solidly invested enough in people that could give him the needed mileage to uproot Otti. Although he is smartly trying to build structure under different guises, political watchers believe he is yet to gain the needed state-wide acceptance that could help deliver him as governor.

His strained relationship with his political benefactor, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu; as well as the alleged cold war with the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, may work against his governorship ambition.

Besides, he hails from Bende, the only LGA in Abia North that had produced governors for eight years. Equity will definitely not favour Bende when power rotates back to Abia North.

    Okey Ahiwe

Okey Ahiwe was the PDP governorship candidate in 2023, and finished second in the race. He hails from the same Isiala Ngwa in Abia Central like Otti He, no doubt, still nurses governorship ambition. Ahiwe, with the strong backing of his political godfather, ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, planted his loyalists in the leadership of Abia PDP although the outcome of the party’s congress is still a subject of litigation.

Ahiwe enjoys the support of some PDP faithful, but the leadership crisis rocking the party poses a challenge. Some former chieftains of the party have since defected to other parties.

A major obstacle before him is that many Abians still accuse the PDP, which superintended over the affairs of the state for nearly two decades and four years, of under-developing the state. They do not seem to be ready to trust the party with power any time soon except Governor Otti defects to PDP as some are permuting. Besides, some are afraid that another Ngwa man succeeding Otti who took over from a fellow Ngwa will give the clan undue advantage over other clans and political blocs in the state.

    Henry Ikoh

Chief Henry Ikoh was commissioner for Industry in Abia, and Minister of State for Science and Technology. He is a chieftain of the APC. He hails from Ahuwa Oboro in Ikwuano LGA, in Abia Central district as Governor Otti. The industrialist is a household name in Abia politics having aspired severally to be Governor under different political parties before joining the APC. His company, Harmony Foam has since bounced back after some challenges. He is also into the hospitality industry, and has the financial muscle to execute his political ambition, if he decided to run.

Chief Ikoh popularly known as Akanchawa and Ozulumba is a likable fellow. He used to have a state-wide political structure, and can easily resuscitate it for the 2027 project.

Although he has also not publicly declared interest, there are obvious indications that he is actually warming up for the APC ticket. Some groups have been beckoning him to accept the persuasion to run for the governorship seat. He has not heeded the calls but he has also not turned them down, thus suggesting that he may be testing the waters. His closeness to Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State may work in his favour.

Although Ikoh does not seem to have many enemies in the state, he does not yet seem to command the needed followership to be able to dislodge Otti.

    Uche Ogah

Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, former Minister of State for Solid Minerals, Mines and Steel Development, is also of the APC. The Onuaku Uturu-born young billoniare has severally sought the opportunity to oversee the affairs of Abia State without success.

Ogah almost sacked ex-Governor Ikpeazu in 2017 when he was issued with a Certificate of Return by the electoral umpire following a judgment of an Abuja High Court in his favour. Ikpeazu fought back to retain the seat

Ogah has not indicated any interest in contesting again in 2027, and may not contest. He supported Otti in 2023, and has not withdrawn his support for the incumbent. He has applauded some of the achievements of the Governor which according to him, are also in line with his vision for the state.

Political watchers believe that Ogah may have decided to wait for 2031 to allow Otti go for a second term. It is also believed that Ogah is currently the most favoured when power eventually rotates back to Abia North in 2031. Many see him as a governor in the making.

    Chief Emeka Atuma

Chief Emeka Atuma, a former member of the House of Representatives who represented Ikwuano/ Umuahia federal constituency, is a chieftain of the APC.

Atuma contested the governorship primaries of the APC in 2023 but lost to High Chief Emenike, but was later declared the APC senatorial flag bearer of Abia Central, a declaration that triggered legal fireworks which later ended in favour of Chief Sam Onuigbo.

He recently hosted stakeholders of the party from the constituency and party leaders in the state at his Ntalakwu Oboro Ikwuano palacial home where he made it clear he would be among Otti’s challengers in 2027.

At the gathering, he took a clean sweep of Gov. Otti who he accused of performing below expectations, and vowed to retire him in 2027.

Atuma, ex-lawmaker and a rich contractor, has the political exposure and the deep pocket to execute his governorship ambition.

His philanthropic gestures will also count in his favour although politics is beyond mere philanthropy.

Atuma promised to provide good governance to the people if given the opportunity.

He claimed that under the current LP-led administration, “the governed are blindfolded on the affairs of the state”, and promised to change the narrative.

Describing Otti’s government as “an accidental government”, Atuma promised to bring accelerated development in the state if voted for.

He promised that the  APC , if given the opportunity, would “run on transparency, good governance and human capital development when it takes over leadership in Abia State.”

Atuma is energetic and appears ready to showacase his mettle if given the opportunity especially if Emenike his ally decides to throw his weight behind him.

    Odds against him

He does not seem to have the statewide followership needed to dislodge Otti assuming he is able to pick the APC ticket.

Some also believe that his party APC does not have the appeal to win governorship election in Abia despite claims by members of the party that it means well for the people.

Another big hurdle for him is that he comes from Abia Central that has been in charge of the state affairs for close to 12 years.

Asagba of Asaba to FG: Boost Asaba Airport, support young pilots

Asagba of Asaba, Professor Epiphany Azinge, has urged the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, to facilitate the increase of flight operations in Asaba Airport.

During a visit to the minister in Abuja, the monarch also requested the minister’s intervention in supporting Delta youths who have undergone pilot training programs to advance their training and become professional pilots.

Special Adviser on Media and Communication to the Minister, Mr Tunde Moshood, said this in a statement.

His words: “The royal father also articulated three key requests to enhance the aviation landscape in Asaba and Delta State at large. Firstly, he requested an increase in flight operations at Asaba Airport, which he thought should be more frequent owing to the status and importance of the city. He urged the Minister to leverage his position to facilitate the growth of flight operations in Asaba, transforming it into an international airport capable of accommodating regular international flights and serving as a transit hub for large aircraft staying overnight.

“Second, the royal father highlighted the growing pool of talented, veteran pilots among Delta’s youth, many of whom have developed pilot training programs.

He requested the minister’s intervention in supporting these youths through government channels, including the possibility of Public-Private Partnerships, PPP, to help realize their dreams of advancing their training and becoming professional pilots.”

President Tinubu donates palliatives to Christian, Muslim faithful in South-East, South-South

President Bola Tinubu, on Friday, donated palliative items to Christian and Muslim faithful in the South-East and South-South zones of the country to cushion the effect of the economic hardship in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the donation was unveiled in Owerri on behalf of the president by Gov. Hope Uzodimma of Imo.

In a speech, the president said that the donation aimed to support the Christian and Muslim faithful to break their fast.

He said the fasting and prayer period called for charity and that the gesture had more spiritual importance than physical.

“As we work hard to bring permanent solution to the hunger in the land and high cost of living which is a global thing, the president has decided to intervene from time to time with palliative measures to cushion the effect of hardship occasioned by global economy recession.

“The government is investing a lot of money in agriculture and livestock development to ensure food security and sufficiency.

“This interim intervention is to cushion the effect of the gap that is created between the period of planting and harvesting,” the president said.

The governor urged the faithful of the two religions to commit the country to “serious prayers”, saying: “As you pray, pray for God not to allow the president to be distracted.

“As long as he is implementing his line of programmes, Nigeria will be a land of prosperity.”

He further said that each state would get two trailer loads of rice, amounting to 1,200 bags as well as cartons of noodles to break their fast.

He announced a donation of N5 million support by the president to each state for fueling and transportation of the items.

He further urged the governors to be transparent in the distribution of the items and ensure that they are distributed mostly to the poor and down trodden.

In separate remarks, the chairmen of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and leaders of the Muslim communities in the 11 states of the two zones commended the president “for being magnanimous” to them during the fasting season.

They urged the government to double efforts and provide enabling environment that would promote economic development and self-sufficiency for the nation.

The chairman of CAN in Imo, Rev. Divine Eches, prayed to God to sustain, protect and grant the president the wisdom to continue to provide quality leadership for the country.

He commended Uzodimma for the developmental strides in Imo and prayed God to continue to strengthen him in his effort to develop the state.
