  • Peter Obi lists five things he would have done differently as President

Peter Obi lists five things he would have done differently as President

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has again criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying his government has not delivered on some of its promises to Nigerians.

After almost two years of Tinubu administration, Obi believes the President has not made any visible impact on Nigerians.

The ex-governor of Anambra State assessed the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the evening of Tuesday, April 1, 2025, when he appeared on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.

Obi said that if he were president, he would have ensured that Nigerians saw considerable change in critical sectors.

Highlighting some of the things he would have done differently, the LP chieftain said in two years, he would have tackled corruption and reduced the cost of governance in a manner that would be visible to Nigerians.

“The President that is there today how many years has he spent, two years and you could see where we are. That means you can change things in two years. If I was there in two years, you would have seen a considerable change in critical areas. I would have tackled corruption head on. I would have reduced cost of governance and you would see it, people would feel it,” he said.

Obi said his administration would have ensured that borrowed money was invested properly in healthcare, stressing that 70 percent of the sector is currently inoperative.

“Our primary healthcare today, 70 percent (of it) are not functional and we spent over N35 billion on conference centre, which conference? who is coming for the conference? You need to invest your money properly, You would have been seeing borrowed money invested in critical areas,” he submitted.

Citing Banglandesh as an example, the ex-governor said his administration would use Nigeria’s land size to turn it into a rice-producing country.

“In Bangladesh, a country with one 148,000 km² of land is producing about 60 million metric tons of rice and us, with over six times that size of land cannot do 10 percent of that,” Obi said.

Lastly, Obi agreed with President Tinubu’s devaluation of the naira; however, he faulted the manner in which the policy was implemented.

He said if he were the President, he would have floated the naira in an organised manner, adding that floating the currency is meant to support productivity.

He said, “There’s nothing wrong in devaluation, but I would have allowed the naira to float but I would have done it in an organised manner. There will be productivity. The idea of devaluing your currency, allowing it to float is that you have productivity so you can export, so people can come and buy.”

According to him, floating the naira without productivity is a double whammy.

  • New charges at Onne Port approved two years ago — Shipper’s Council

New charges at Onne Port approved two years ago — Shipper’s Council

The Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) has refuted media reports of increased cargo charges at Onne Port, clarifying that no such approval was given by the agency.

The Council in a statement said that the last approved increment was in 2021 adding that any report of increased charges after 2021 was not approved by the Council.

In a telephone chat with TodayPriceNG, the Executive Secretary of the Council, Barr. Akuta Ukeyima said that since he assumed duty as Chief Executive Officer of the agency, there has been no discussion on increment of charges with any terminal operator.

He explained that the increase in charges were approved in 2021 and 2023, long before coming to the Council in 2024, followed due process as all stakeholders were duly consulted before an agreement for increase in charges were agreed upon.

A statement signed by the management of the Council, noted that the current fees are being charged at the West African Container Terminal, WACT. Onne Port was duly reviewed and approved by the Council.

Part of the statement reads: “ The attention of the Nigerian Shippers Council has been drawn to a recent publication making the rounds on social media concerning the tariff review approval issued to the West African Container Terminal, WACT, in 2021 and 2023.

“As the economic regulator of the port sector, the Council considers it necessary to set the records straight and provide clarification to avoid any misinformation.

“The tariff increment implemented by WACT was reviewed and approved by the NSC.

“The review was conducted following rigorous assessment processes to ensure that the rates remain within an acceptable industry benchmark and aligned with prevailing economic realities.

“It is pertinent to note that the NSC in its regulatory capacity, ensures that all tariff adjustments are fair, justifiable and sustainable for both service providers and port users.

“According to WACT, prior to the implementation of the new tariff structure, WACT engaged extensively with the leadership of registered clearing agents in Onne including the Association of Nigerian Licenced Customs Agents, ANLCA, the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, NAGAFF, the Association of Registered Freight Forwarders of Nigeria, ARFFN, and the National Council of Managing Directors Licensed Customs Agents. NCMDLCA.

The discussion led to a mutual agreement that the implementation would be phased to ease the impact on port users.

  • Trump set to unleash ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs

Trump set to unleash ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs

US President Donald Trump is poised to unveil sweeping new “Liberation Day” tariffs on Wednesday, but kept the world guessing until the last minute about the scope of an onslaught that could spark a global trade war.

Trump will roll out the measures flanked by cabinet members in the Rose Garden of the White House at 4:00 pm (2000 GMT) — after Wall Street markets close — promising that they will stop America being “ripped off” and will deliver a new “golden age” of US industry.

But while Trump insisted he had decided on the reciprocal tariffs hitting countries that have targeted the United States, the White House admitted he was still ironing out the details with less than 24 hours to go late Tuesday.

The Republican billionaire has had a long love affair with tariffs, insisting in the face of economic experts that they are a cure-all that will tackle America’s trade imbalances with friends and foes alike.

Critics say that not only will US consumers bear the brunt as importers pass on the cost, but that they could increase the risk of a damaging recession at home and abroad.

Global markets have been jittery for days ahead of Trump’s announcement, while the countries most likely in the crosshairs have called for talks — even as they ready retaliatory measures.

    – ‘Very kind’ –

The move also underscores the growing and profound gulf between Trump’s America and many of its closest allies, not only on trade but on security, defense and almost everything else.

But in typically unpredictable fashion, the 78-year-old US president is keeping the details close to his chest.

Trump has trailed the measures for weeks, initially suggesting that the tariffs would simply match whatever levies other countries impose.

On Monday, he merely said that he would be “very kind” — but gave little away.

As the deadline drew near US media said he had also been considering blanket 20 percent tariffs — and then that he was looking at a third option where some countries would get preferential treatment.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was meeting his top advisors on the eve of the announcement, “perfecting it to make sure this is a perfect deal.”

The tariffs would come into effect “immediately” after Wednesday’s roll-out, she added — effectively ruling out any delays for negotiations with other countries.

Trump has wobbled on several other tariff announcements since returning to office in January, blinking at the last minute with allies such as Canada and Mexico.

His plans have however sparked growing fears of a damaging trade war around the world that could drive up prices and cause widespread disruption.

    – ‘Couldn’t care less’ –

Major economies including the European Union and Canada have vowed retaliation.

“We are going to be very deliberate in terms of the measures we take, to fight for Canada,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Tuesday.

The European Union, which Trump has accused of trying to “screw” the United States, said Tuesday it still hoped to negotiate a solution — but that “all instruments are on the table” to retaliate if necessary.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with Trump on “productive negotiations” towards a UK-US trade deal. Vietnam said on Tuesday it would slash duties on a range of goods to appease Trump.

The former property tycoon has used tariffs as a foreign policy weapon ever since his chaotic first term from 2017-2021.

Trump insists they will bring a “rebirth” of America’s hollowed-out manufacturing capacity, and says companies can avoid tariffs by moving to the United States.

Sweeping auto tariffs of 25 percent that Trump announced last week — saying he “couldn’t care less” if prices of foreign cars went up — are due to come into effect on April 3.

A 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum from around the world came into effect in mid-March.

China was hit in March by additional 20 percent tariffs on all goods, triggering retaliatory duties from Beijing. The EU has unveiled its own measures to start mid-April.

  • Ebonyi govt dismisses reports of 5 commissioners’ arrest

Ebonyi govt dismisses reports of 5 commissioners’ arrest

The Ebonyi Government has dismissed a report that Gov.  Francis Nwifuru ordered the arrest of five Commissioners over delay in delivery and breach of contracts.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Ebonyi Executive Council (EXCO) committee on Supervision and Completion of two state housing projects, Chief Donatus Ilang in Abakaliki.

The projects are the 140 housing units for the Izzo and Amaze communities, which were displaced by the Ezilo/Ezza Ezilo communal crisis in the Ishielu Local Government Area.

Ilang, who is also the Commissioner for Border, Peace and Conflict Resolution, described the report as “false and unfounded”.

“No commissioner was arrested, and you can confirm this from the police and other security agencies.

“The people writing such fake news are doing so from their imagination,” he said.

“We informed them of the state governor ‘s displeasure over delays in the project and resolved to take drastic actions on the defaulters,” he said.

He noted that the commissioners promised to furnish the committee with relevant information that would enable it to confront the erring contractors.

“The governor is desirous to give the people of both communities. affected by a fratricidal communal conflict, housing reprieves.

“” We gave all persons involved in the projects time to comply with the contractual terms.

“Our mandate is to ensure that the governor’s noble intentions towards people of both communities are actualised and we would not toy with such,” he said.

NAN reports that the 140 units of building projects were initiated by the state government to cushion the housing needs of both communities.

The Ebonyi Police Command  Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Joshua Ukandu, also told NAN in an interview that no commissioner was in their custody.

“We did not arrest any commissioner,” he said. (NAN)

  • US Senator Cory Booker delivers 25-hour longest speech in Senate history

US Senator Cory Booker delivers 25-hour longest speech in Senate history

A Democratic US lawmaker shattered a record for the longest speech in Senate history Tuesday, staying on his feet for more than 25 hours to deliver a fiery protest against President Donald Trump’s “unconstitutional” actions.

Senator Cory Booker’s display of endurance — to hold the floor he had to remain standing and could not even go to the bathroom — recalled the famous scene in Frank Capra’s 1939 film classic “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.”

The longest Senate speech on record before Tuesday was delivered by South Carolina’s Strom Thurmond, who filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

Booker, only the fourth Black senator to be popularly elected to the body, blew past that deadline, his voice still strong but emotional as he topped out at 25 hours and five minutes.

“Strom Thurmond’s record always… really irked me,” he later told broadcaster MSNBC.

“That the longest speech on our great Senate floor was someone who was trying to stop people like me from being in the Senate.”

The public galleries of the Senate chamber gradually filled as the moment he broke the record approached, with more Democratic lawmakers joining the session — although Republicans largely stayed away.

“This is a moral moment. It’s not left or right. It’s right or wrong,” Booker said as he wrapped up.

He also quoted his mentor John Lewis, a 1960s civil rights movement leader, who urged campaigners to get into “good trouble,” before finally pronouncing “Madam President, I yield the floor.”

The 55-year-old New Jersey native had found a moment for some humor as he passed the record, joking: “I want to go a little bit past this and then I’m going to deal with some of the biological urgencies I’m feeling.”

    – ‘Foundations of democracy’ –

Although Booker’s talk-a-thon was not actually blocking the majority Republican Party from holding votes in the Senate, as would be the case in a true filibuster, his defiance quickly became a rallying point for beleaguered Democrats.

Booker, a former presidential candidate, seized command in the chamber at 7:00 pm (2300 GMT) Monday and finished at 8:05 pm Tuesday.

He lashed out at Trump’s radical cost-cutting policies that have seen his top advisor Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, slash entire government programs without consent from Congress.

The senator said Trump’s aggressive seizing of ever-more executive power had put US democracy at risk.

“Unnecessary hardships are being borne by Americans of all backgrounds. And institutions which are special in America, which are precious and which are unique in our country, are being recklessly — and I would say even unconstitutionally — affected, attacked, even shattered,” Booker said.

“In just 71 days the president of the United States has inflicted so much harm on Americans’ safety, financial stability, the core foundations of our democracy,” he said.

But he had words of encouragement for Trump opponents, saying as he concluded that “the power of the people is greater than the people in power.”

    – Cramps and sore throat –

Booker later went into detail about how he withstood the physical demands of the speech.

“My strategy was to stop eating. I think I stopped eating Friday and then to stop drinking the night before I started on Monday,” he told reporters in the Capitol.

The approach “had its benefits and had its really downsides… different muscle groups start to really cramp up” with dehydration, he added.

In a statement sent by his office, Booker added that he was “tired and a little hoarse.”

Democratic lawmakers, in the minority in both the Senate and House of Representatives, have struggled over how to blunt Trump’s efforts to downsize government, ramp up deportations and shred much of the country’s political norms.

“I just want to thank you for holding vigil for this country all night,” Senator Raphael Warnock told Booker on the floor.

Booker dedicated much of his speech to criticizing Trump’s policies, but to pass the time he also recited poetry, discussed sports and entertained questions from colleagues.

“If you love your neighbor, if you love this country, show your love. Stop them from doing what they’re trying to (do),” he said.

  • Tanker explosion: FRSC urges states to step up enforcement of road safety regulations

Tanker explosion: FRSC urges states to step up enforcement of road safety regulations

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has urged states and relevant authorities to step up enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly regarding truck standards and driver behaviour.

The FRSC spokesman, Olusegun Ogungbemide, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

He expressed concerns over the poor condition of trucks on Nigerian roads, citing issues like poor vehicle maintenance, speeding, and disregard for traffic regulations as contributing factors to road accidents.

Addressing concerns following the recent tanker explosion on the Nyanya–Mararaba expressway, Ogungbemide said that the crash was caused by a cement-laden Dangote truck.

”The truck’s brakes failed, causing it to collide with vehicles in a gridlock, sparking a fatal inferno.

“At the time of rescue operations, our priority was evacuation. But from preliminary investigations, it was not a CNG truck,” he said.

Ogungbemide said Nigeria does not have a national policy on restricting the movement of articulated vehicles during specific hours, leaving states to devise their own controls.

“At the national level, there is no policy that determines when trucks and tankers are expected to move. There’s no restriction of movements.

“The concern of the Federal Government is the safety of all vehicles while on the road, which FRSC, the lead agency in road safety management, has been doing.

“I am aware that different states now have their own regulations as regards the movement of vehicles that are articulated ones.

“One of such regulations is to increase the trip time and also to reduce the rate of crashes involving these articulated vehicles.

“I can tell you that after that incident in Nyanya-Mararaba, we got to know that the FCT has a regulation that between 3p.m. and 10p.m., articulated vehicles are expected to stay off the highway.

“This is expected to be the peak period when people are returning home, and it also states that the early hours too, between 6am and 12pm in the morning, they are also expected to stay off the highway.

“I also know that our FCT command has also been working with other agencies to get this implemented, but the strength of that enforcement is what I cannot really say now,” he said.

Ogungbemide maintained that all the policies the FRSC had put in place over the years have reduced the rate of crashes involving those categories of vehicles.

He, however, added that due to the difficulty in stopping moving trucks, particularly those carrying inflammable content, the FRSC collaborated with loading depots.

According to him, these vehicles have outlived their usefulness and posed significant hazards on Nigerian highways, but the FRSC policies have really assisted us.

“One such example is the Corps’ Road Transport Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS), introduced in 2007, which remains a key framework for regulating fleet operators with more than five vehicles.

“No petroleum, diesel, or gas truck is expected to be loaded without our safety clearance. We now emphasise pre-loading checks to prevent unsafe trucks from hitting the road.

“Operators under the scheme are monitored, their vehicles inspected regularly, and drivers trained. It’s part of our long-term solution to articulated vehicle crashes,” he added.

Ogungbemide warned that no safety policy can succeed without first addressing the quality of vehicles being allowed into the country.

The FRSC spokesperson stressed that the high dependence on road transport, due to weak alternatives like rail and waterways, continued to put enormous pressure on the highway network.

“Until other modes of transport are developed, the risks on our roads will remain high. But we are doing all we can with the tools we have,” he said.

Ogungbemide said the corps would release the full report on the Nyanya–Mararaba crash investigation once concluded.

He reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to safer highways across the country. (NAN)

  • Tinubu sacks Kyari, NNPCL Board, appoints Engr Ojulari as new GCEO

Tinubu sacks Kyari, NNPCL Board, appoints Engr Ojulari as new GCEO

President Bola Tinubu, in a sweeping reconstitution of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC) Limited Board, has sacked the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO, Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari, and the Board Chairman, Chief Pius Akinyelure.

President Tinubu also removed all other board members appointed with Akinyelure and Kyari in November 2023.

This was made public via a statement issued in the early hours of Wednesday by the presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the new 11-man board has Engineer Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the Group CEO and Ahmadu Musa Kida as non-executive chairman.

The statement further stated that Adedapo Segun, who replaced Umaru Isa Ajiya as the chief financial officer last November, has been appointed to the new board by President Tinubu.

Six board members, non-executive directors, represent the country’s geopolitical zones. They are Bello Rabiu, North West; Yusuf Usman, North East; and Babs Omotowa, a former managing director of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), who represents North Central.

President Tinubu appointed Austin Avuru as a non-executive director from the South-South, David Ige as a non-executive director from the South-West, and Henry Obih as a non-executive director from the South-East.

Mrs Lydia Shehu Jafiya, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, will represent the ministry on the new board,Which Aminu Said Ahmed will represent the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

Continuing, the statement said, “All the appointments are effective today, April 2.

“President Tinubu, invoking the powers granted under Section 59, subsection 2 of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021, emphasized that the board’s restructuring is crucial for enhancing operational efficiency, restoring investor confidence, boosting local content, driving economic growth, and advancing gas commercialization and diversification.

“President Tinubu also handed out an immediate action plan to the new board: to conduct a strategic portfolio review of NNPC-operated and joint venture assets to ensure alignment with value maximization objectives.

“Since 2023, the Tinubu administration has implemented oil sector reforms to attract investment. Last year, NNPC reported $17 billion in new investments within the sector. The administration now envisions increasing the investment to $30 billion by 2027 and $60 billion by 2030.

“The Tinubu administration targets raising oil production to two million barrels daily by 2027 and three million daily by 2030. Concurrently, the government wants gas production jacked to 8 billion cubic feet daily by 2027 and 10 billion cubic feet by 2030.

“Furthermore, President Tinubu expects the new board to elevate NNPC’s share of crude oil refining output to 200,000 barrels by 2027 and reach 500,000 by 2030.

“The new board chairman, Ahmadu Musa Kida, is from Borno State. He is an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he received a degree in civil engineering in 1984. He also obtained a postgraduate diploma in petroleum engineering from the Institut Francaise du Petrol (IFP) in Paris.

“He started his career in the oil industry at Elf Petroleum Nigeria and later joined Total Exploration and Production as a trainee engineer in 1985.

“Musa became Total Nigeria’s Deputy Managing Director of Deep Water Services in 2015. Last year, he became an Independent Non-Executive Director at Pan Ocean-Newcross Group.

“Apart from his oil industry career, Ahmadu Musa Kida is a former basketballer and the president of the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF) board.

“Ojulari, the new NNPC Limited Group CEO, hails from Kwara State. Until his new appointment, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Renaissance Africa Energy Company. His renaissance recently led a consortium of indigenous energy firms in the landmark acquisition of the entire equity holding in the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), worth $2.4 billion.

“Like Kida, Ojulari is also an alumnus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for Elf Aquitaine as the first Nigerian process engineer to begin a stellar career in the oil sector. From Elf, he joined Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd in 1991 as an associate production technologist.

“Apart from working in Nigeria, he worked in Europe and the Middle East in different capacities as a petroleum process and production engineer, strategic planner, field developer, and asset manager. In 2015, he became the managing director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO).

“During his career, he was chairman and a member of the board of trustees of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE Nigerian Council) and a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

“President Tinubu thanked the old board members for their dedicated service to NNPC Limited, particularly their efforts in rehabilitating the old Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, which enabled them to resume petroleum product production after prolonged shutdowns. He wished them well in their future endeavours.”

  • Democrats drag Trump to court over election overhaul order

Democrats drag Trump to court over election overhaul order

The Democratic Party has sued the Trump administration over an attempt to impose sweeping changes on the election systems, including requiring citizenship proof to register to vote and limiting mail-in ballot counting.

In a lawsuit filed Monday, the Democratic Party asked a federal court to block the executive order, which prevents states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after election day. The president’s directive also requires proof of citizenship to be presented — through documents such as a passport — when registering to vote.

“The President does not get to dictate the rules of our elections,” said the lawsuit filed in Washington by the Democratic National Committee, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and others.

“The Executive Order seeks to impose radical changes on how Americans register to vote, cast a ballot, and participate in our democracy—all of which threaten to disenfranchise lawful voters and none of which is legal,” it added.

After signing the March 25 order, called “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections”, US President Donald Trump described it as “the farthest-reaching executive action taken” to secure US elections.

Trump, who does not acknowledge his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, has long questioned the integrity of the US electoral system. He has repeatedly and baselessly amplified conspiracy theories about massive election fraud in the United States, particularly involving absentee voting.

Legal scholars swiftly denounced Trump’s election order as an abuse of presidential power that could prevent millions of eligible voters from casting ballots.

Advocacy groups led by the Campaign Legal Center and State Democracy Defenders Fund filed a separate lawsuit on Monday against the same executive order.

“The president’s executive order is an unlawful action that threatens to uproot our tried-and-tested election systems and silence potentially millions of Americans,” Danielle Lang of the Campaign Legal Center said in a statement.

“It is simply not within the president’s authority to set election rules by executive decree, especially when they would restrict access to voting in this way.”
