  • I’m closer to Abuja than defectors  —  Alex Otti laughs off defection rumour

I’m closer to Abuja than defectors  —  Alex Otti laughs off defection rumour

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has dismissed the speculation that he’s planning to dump the Labour Party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Otti’s rumored defection plan swirled recently following the ‘tsunami defection’ that took over the Peoples Democratic Party’s age-long structure in Delta State.

During their official reception ceremony, former Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, said he and his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, joined the APC to connect Delta State to Aso Rock, the seat of power.

However, in an interview with Arise Television, the Abia State Governor laughed off the idea of joining the ruling party to get closer to the president.

Otti said he did not need to defect to the APC to get closer to the seat of power, adding that everybody did not need to join the ruling party.

He said, “Governor Otti is not decamping and my party is not on shaky ground.”

When asked if he needed to decamp to get close to the centre like Okowa and Oborevwori did, Otti said, “I am even closer to the centre than some of them.”

“This is Democracy, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu held on to his Alliance for Democracy (AD), Action Congress (AC) Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), before becoming APC. If he was (defection), he won be President today. Sometimes, you have to also stand for something,” Otti said.

Given the leadership crisis in the LP, Otti is not certain about his future in the party. When asked if he would ever leave the Labour Party, the governor said, “I am not God. I cannot say if there’s no LP tomorrow.”

In his political journey, Governor Otti has moved from the PDP to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and then to the APC before joining the LP, the party that brought him power in 2023.

  • I buy cars with my money not award – Portable replies artistes days after snub at Headies award

I buy cars with my money not award – Portable replies artistes days after snub at Headies award

Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has slammed fellow artistes just days after the conclusion of the 2024 Headies Awards.

In a video that has gone viral, the street-hop star accused artistes of buying recognition with money, claiming he prefers to use his earnings on tangible assets.

This latest outburst follows his release from prison in Ogun State, where he served a brief sentence after allegedly assaulting a police officer.

The singer was freed after meeting the condition of a N30,000 fine.

In the video, Portable criticised the credibility of award and questioned the integrity of the awards, alleging that they are sold rather than earned.

“You’re not successful, you only bought award,” he said. “They mock me that I wasn’t given the award, but I have money. I use it to buy my cars. I’m successful. I’ve dropped an album. Are you more successful than I am? Who listens to your music?”

Taking pride in his recent collaboration with UK rapper Skepta, Portable argued that true recognition lies in global partnerships, not local awards.

“Skepta and Portable, we are the owners of the award, but they said they won’t give us,” he declared.

He concluded by stating his preference for long-term investments over the pursuit of what he described as superficial accolades.

“I would use my money to buy land, buy houses, I cannot buy fake life,” he said.

  • Alleged Terrorism: We didn’t arrest Kanu with any weapon, DSS tells court

Alleged Terrorism: We didn’t arrest Kanu with any weapon, DSS tells court

ABUJA– Trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, resumed before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, as the Department of State Services, DSS, gave more insight into what transpired when he was arrested in 2015.

The security agency, through one of its operatives that appeared as a witness in the case, told the court that on October 14, 2015, when Kanu was arrested in one of the rooms in Golden Tulip Hotel, Lagos International Airport, no weapon of terrorism was found on him.

The witness, whose identity was shielded for security reason, told the court that the lady that was found inside the hotel room with the IPOB leader, equally had no weapon in her possession.

Giving his evidence under the codename PWAAA, the witness admitted that most of the items that were retrieved from the hotel room were Kanu’s personal belongings, among which included materials for radio broadcast.

However, the operative who testified behind a protective shield, maintained that though the recovered items may not be ordinarily harmful, he said their intended usage by the defendant could be a source of problem.

While being cross-examined by Kanu’s legal team led by a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, the witness listed the items recovered from Kanu to include: 1 Black laptop, 2 Multi mix transmitters, 1 Mini white Apple iPad with pouch, 1 Grey Apple iPad with pouch, 1 Grey MacBook with pouch, 1 Grey MacBook with case, 1 Mini drone sound wave speaker, 2 Mini white speakers, 1 Large computer mouse, 1 White adaptor, 1 Laptop adaptor and 1 Carton bag with laptop.

Others are; Two 3G modems, 2 Glo modems, 1 Glo Hawaii modem, 1 MTN modem, 1 Etisalat modem, 1 Flash drive, 1 Camcorder, 1 Hand recorder in a black pouch, 1 MacBook Pro adaptor, 1 Mic stand, 1 Phillips headphone, 1 Radio Sharp mic with cord, 1 Pro sound mic with cord, 1 4G LTE modem, a bunch of cards, 1 Power adaptor for mixer.

1 Easy Blaze white modem, 1 Samsung phone,1 Black Motorola phone and 1 Nokia phone.

As well as; 1 Black Samsung phone, 1 Black phone, 1 D-Link black modem,
1 8GB flash drive, 1 Extension wire adaptor, 1 Pair of shoes, 1 Belt, 1 Pair of ciderwood sneakers and1 Footwear, 1 Black Softech wristwatch, 2 Singlets, 1 Sealed Hermes perfume, 1 Trinket, 1 Pokham perfume, 1 Fredrick Peckham wristwatch, 1 Diesel wristwatch, 1 Alexander Christy collection wristwatch, 1 Club wristwatch and10 items altogether.

The last set of items he listed were; 3 Bank MasterCards, Copies of documents, 1 Copy of IPOB complementary card, Documents tagged IPOB, 1 White clipper, 1 Bottle of medicine, 1 Oman perfume, 2 Mini scented oils, 1 Empty black purse, 1 Nigerian passport bearing the names Okwu Kanu Nwannekaibeya Nnamdi Ngozichukwu and 1 British passport bearing the name Okwu Kanu Nwannekaibeya, 1 Black purse, 1 Passport holder, 1 Card holder, 1 Box of Rocarden wristwatch and 4 Bundles of cords.

The recovered items, which were brought before the court in four suitcases, were earlier admitted in evidence and marked as exhibits by trial Justice James Omotosho.

Answering more questions during the cross-examination, the witness, admitted that he did not analyse any of the items as he was only mandated to arrest the defendant and obtain his statement.

Though the PWAAA admitted that Kanu’s phones were eventually analysed, he said the report of the analysis was not tendered before the court as it was not considered important.

The witness acknowledged that since over 10 years that the items were taken away from Kanu and confiscated, they would have lost their value or expired.

More so, the witness admitted that at the time Kanu’s statement was obtained, none of his lawyers were present to observe the process.

Asked if he was aware of other persons also facing trial over Biafra agitation, the witness answered in the negative, saying he does not know any person that is facing a similar trial as Kanu.

He, however, told the court that he is aware that one Simon Ekpa has been arrested and would soon be brought back to Nigeria to face trial for supporting Kanu’s agitation.

Besides, he told the court that he could not remember any time that Kanu complained about corruption in high places, high unemployment rate among youths or when he tendered apologies for insulting the President and Igbo leaders.

The operative further told the court that he could not remember anytime that Kanu described the IPOB as a non-violent voluntary organization.

While acknowledging that there have been killings in some part of the country, especially in the North, the witness said he was aware that the government has been doing its best to stem the tide.

He said he does not know if the killings had anything to do with any form of agitation for self-actualization.

Meanwhile, Justice Omotosho adjourned the matter to May 6, 7 and 8 for continuation of the cross-examination.

Kanu, who was arrested upon his return to the country from the United Kingdom, is answering to a seven-count charge the FG preferred against him.

It will be recalled that the court had on April 25, 2017, granted him bail on health ground, after he had spent about 18 months in detention.

Upon the perfection of the bail conditions, he was on April 28, 2017, released from the Kuje prison.

However, midway into the trial, the IPOB leader escaped from the country after soldiers invaded his country home at Afara Ukwu Ibeku in Umuahia, Abia State, an operation that led to the death of some of his followers.

Kanu was later re-arrested in Kenya on June 19, 2021 and extraordinarily renditioned back to the country by security agents on June 27, 2021.

Owing to the development, the trial court, on June 29, 2021, remanded him in custody of DSS, where he remained till date.

On April 8, 2022, the court struck out eight out of the 15-count charge that FG preferred against him on the premise that they lacked substance.

Likewise, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, on October 13, 2022, ordered Kanu’s immediate release from detention even as it quashed the charge against him.

Dissatisfied with the decision, FG took the matter before the Supreme Court, even as it persuaded the appellate court to suspend the execution of the judgement, pending the determination of its appeal.

While deciding the appeal, the Supreme Court, on December 15, 2023, vacated the judgement of the appellate court and gave FG the nod to try the IPOB leader on the subsisting seven-count charge.

  • Nigerian makes Billboard’s 2025 list of top music lawyers

Nigerian makes Billboard’s 2025 list of top music lawyers

An entertainment lawyer, Akinyemi Ayinoluwa, who is a partner at Hightower Solicitors and Advocate, has been named one of the most important music lawyers in the world by Billboard for 2025.

The recognition highlights Ayinoluwa’s exceptional expertise in music law and dedication to championing the rights of record producers and songwriters.

According to Billboard’s April edition, Hightower Solicitors, led by Ayinoluwa, recently finalised a publishing agreement with Empire Music, an international music label.

Also with Ragee, a prominent Afrobeats producer who co-produced Chris Brown’s “Sensational”, which earned a nomination for Best African Music Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards.

This achievement showcases Hightower’s expertise in guiding clients to build valuable music catalogues.

In an interview Ayinoluwa said: “I feel blessed to be recognised by Billboard as one of the most important music lawyers in the world.

“I’m dedicating this to my late dad for instilling in me the discipline to stay on a journey, also for introducing me to the legal profession and then also for accommodating my love for music.”

Ayinoluwa’s said that his journey in music law began when he realised that record producers and songwriters were often marginalised and underrepresented in the industry.

“As a young lawyer, I saw an opportunity to make a difference and I have since dedicated my career to advocating for their rights.

“For the past 13 years, I’ve been championing record producers and songwriters.

“I think the reason for that is because, as a young lawyer at that time, I was in my third year of being a lawyer, and the recording artists were already doing well.

“It wasn’t easy for a young lawyer to maybe represent them, and the record producers and songwriters were the underrepresented and marginalised individuals in the music industry,” he said.

According to Ayinoluwa, his music law practice focuses on representing recording artists, songwriters, record producers, record labels, investors in music, and talent managers.

He said one of the reasons for building strong relationships with clients was understanding their vision and pain.

“When you understand it, it’s easy to guide them through all the legal challenges that might arise as they continue to proceed with their journey in music,” he said.

According to Akinyemi, the biggest challenge facing Nigerian record producers and songwriters is being compensated appropriately for their work.

“My recognition will inspire me to do more, to do more qualitative work, and to continue to champion the interests of our clients.

“I think it helps to show that, yes, there’s excellence in Africa. African lawyers can do important work,” he said.

Looking to the future, Ayinoluwa said he was excited to announce a mentorship programme to support the next generation of Nigerian entertainment lawyers.

  • Quit in three months, again FG warns foreigners with expired visas

Quit in three months, again FG warns foreigners with expired visas

The federal government has again warned foreigners with expired visas to leave the country within three months or risk sanctions.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to further inform the general public that a window period of three months from 1st May to 1st August 2025 shall be granted to allow foreigners residing in Nigeria with expired visas to return to their home country voluntarily without penalty,” immigration spokesman ACI Akinsola Akinlabi said in a statement Friday in Abuja.

This was as the service announced that from August 2, there will be a permanent ban on foreigners who overstay their visas for over 12 months.

Minister of Interior Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo had at a meeting with the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) in Lagos last month announced a 5-year entry ban for expatriates who overstay for six months and a 10-year ban for those who overstay for over one year. The ban would also come with a $15 daily fine from the exit date on the visa.

However, the NIS, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said those who overstay for one year and above would now be blacklisted permanently.

“In addition to the introduction of the e-Visa, Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 now makes it mandatory for foreigners who overstay their visas to be liable to the following penalties (effective from 2nd August 2025): Overstay Penalties (Effective from 1st September 2025): $15 per day; 3 months and above: $15/day + 5-year entry ban; and 1 year and above: $15/day + blacklisting (permanent entry ban),” said Akinlabi.

He also said, as earlier scheduled, the government has now rolled out an e-Visa Application System and Automated Landing and Exit Card, which became effective from 1st May 2025.

He said, “Following the 2024 review of Nigeria’s visa policy, the updated 2025 policy introduces an e-visa system with enhanced security protocols.

“The e-Visa application process is strictly online from end to end. Processing time for e-Visas will be 48 hours or less. The e-Visa application system introduces 13 visa types of Short Visit Visa (SVV); details can be found on https://evisa.immigration.gov.ng/.

“Once approved, visas and the QR codes will be sent electronically via the applicant’s email. Visa on Arrival will be officially discontinued as the new e-Visa takes off on 1st May 2025. Visas obtained through the e-Visa Channel are not extendable. Visa on Arrival already issued will remain valid until 30th May 2025.

“The current manual embarkation and disembarkation card has been replaced by an electronic landing and exit card via https://lecard.immigration.gov.ng/.

“Automated landing and exit cards have been introduced for inbound and outbound passengers into Nigeria.

“For the inbound passengers (excluding Nigerians), the landing card must be duly completed online before boarding. For the outbound passengers, the exit card must be duly completed online before departure.

“The exit card system is synchronised with the Visa Processing Centre and will automatically apply penalties, including visa bans, where applicable,” Akinlabi added.

  • Seyi Tinubu denies ‘bribing, abducting, torturing’ NANS president

Seyi Tinubu denies ‘bribing, abducting, torturing’ NANS president

Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has refuted allegations made by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, describing them as an attempt to defame his character.

Reacting in an Instagram post on Friday, Seyi stated, “Wow.. how can someone lie with so much confidence…?? Wow wow… an attempt to defame my character. May God be with you, Comrade Atiku Isah.”

In another post, he added, “I have never held a meeting to discuss any subject matter with Comrade Isah in Lagos or anywhere else in the world. I have never knowingly met him before. Neither did I visit any location with thugs.”

“All these allegations made by Atiku Isah are completely fictional.”

The response followed claims made by Isah during a press conference on Wednesday, in which he alleged that Seyi Tinubu and Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, offered him a N100 million bribe in Lagos to promote the president.

According to Isah, he rejected the offer, stating that he could not promote a president who had not delivered results. He claimed that, upon refusal, plans were made to abduct him.

“I was abducted on the 15th of April. I was stripped naked, beaten seriously in collaboration with the MD of NTA… I did that to gain my freedom, but immediately, I released a press statement that I was forced under duress. Because I was naked, I was beaten. They claimed they would share the video,” he alleged.

He further accused unnamed individuals of threatening to cover up any potential fallout, even suggesting that his life could be taken with no consequences.

“They told me that nothing would happen if they shared the video, and even if they killed me, Seyi Tinubu would order a cover-up. Ladoja, who was involved, said he would instruct the Inspector General of Police to cover it up and that if the police didn’t comply, he would go,” Atiku said.

“I made it clear that even if I am shot, I will still come to this hall. The inauguration proceeded, and I was announced as president. I want Nigerians to know what has happened and that we will not give up. Seyi Tinubu can do anything he wants, but we are determined.”

  • IPoB activities dying off in S-East — AIG Uzuegbu

IPoB activities dying off in S-East — AIG Uzuegbu

ABAKALIKI—THE Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 9 Umuahia, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, has said that the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB) are dying off in  the South East zone.

He called on  the  people of the zone to go about their normal businesses without fear of attack and intimidation.

AIG Uzuegbu who stated this in Ebonyi State Police headquarters on an official visit to the command, warned the  officers and men to desist from any act capable of denting the image of the police.

“Our  police job is a law established by the constitution. We have  a fundamental duty  to do.  It is a duty by law to secure our land.  So, in professionalism, you have to work according to these duties.

“Unethical conduct is not allowed. You have to do your job as stipulated by law. It has to be done by fact, not fancy.

“It’s unprofessional to extort road users and residents.  And the authority of the police is against that.

“We are trying to put our house in order and ensure that things are done very well.    I want to let you know that the police job, too, is not a foreign importation.

“Generally, we have to be professional and excited about what we do.  It  has to be  done by fact, not fancy, as stipulated by law.

“IPOB involvement in the southeast is dying off.  Our policemen are doing a fantastic job.  As I said in my lecture, I came here to interface with them, to build their capacity, to build their confidence.  I want to thank them.”

“When I build up this, they will do more.  We are doing   magic  though.  We have most of their enclaves overran and dismantled them.”

“When we go against them, we will raid all of them, carry our war against any of them. I would like to say that all those thoughts of IPoB exist only in our imagination and the minds of people who are afraid of the unknown.

“ In that sense, people should go and do their job and carry on their businesses.  If we can identify them, we have to deal with them ruthlessly.  We have to be focused and take charge of our area” he said.

In her remarks, the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police Mrs. Adaku Uche Anya enumerated the achievements of the command in combating crimes and making the residents sleep with their two eyes closed.

She assured the AIG that the command would continue to fight crime and criminality in the state to ensure a crime-free state.

He said that the 5000-bed hostel he recently directed to be built for the institution would be ready in three months.

The Governor added that he had also directed the renovation of old students’ hostels in the institution to make them conducive for students.
