  • Industrial unrest looms in 110 FGCs as Labour issues strike notice

Industrial unrest looms in 110 FGCs as Labour issues strike notice

There are indications that academic and other activities at the 110 federal government colleges, FGCs, commonly known as Unity Schools, may be disrupted soon following a notice of strike by Organized Labour over poor welfare among others.

Under the aegis of the the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, Organized Labour, expressed disgust that for past two years the federal ministry of education has bluntly refused to address the poor conditions of workers.

In a 21 day ultimatum issued to the government, ASCSN vowed to order workers in the institutions to down tools and commence a nationwide strike in the government failed to address it demands.

Other demands included “disarticulation of Junior Secondary Schools from the Senior Secondary Schools to create vacancies in the Directorate level, payment of transport allowance and DTA to Federal Education Quality Assurance Service FEQAS, staff, and the need to drastically reduce exorbitant medical fees charged members of staff by the Health Management Organisation, HMO, appointed by the Federal Ministry of Education under the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS.”

ASCSN in a statement by its Secretary General, Joshua Apebo, the Association said it was tired of requests since 2023 through series of letters to the Federal Ministry of Education to convene a meeting to address welfare issues affecting its members in the 110 Unity Colleges throughout the Country, among others.

In the letter of ultimatum to the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja dated Thursday, 23rd January 2025, ASCSN lamented that all efforts since 2023 to bring the Management of the Federal Ministry of Education to the negotiating table to discuss welfare matters affecting its members in the 110 Unity Schools and the FEQAS throughout the country had been treated with contempt.

According to the Union, “the outstanding welfare issues include payment of promotion, salary, and elongation arrears; payment of allowance to Education Officers displaced from the Unity Schools in the North-East, payment of 1st 28 days in lieu of hotel accommodation as stipulated in the Public Service Rules.

“There are also issues of regularization of appointment of PTA teachers, implementation of the White Paper which stipulates that Units of the Association in the 110 Federal Unity Schools should be members of the School Based Management Committees, SBMCs, so that they could be part of the decision-making processes in the Schools, scholarship for children of Education Officers in Colleges where their parents teach in line with the directive of former President, Muhammadu Buhari.

“We have also consistently demanded for the resumption of Quarterly Meetings with the Union where welfare issues affecting members of the Association in the headquarters of the Ministry, those in the 110 Federal Government Colleges, and those in FEQAS throughout the country can be discussed and resolved in the interest of industrial peace and harmony but all our gestures for dialogue have been rebuffed.

“Since all efforts to bring the Federal Ministry of Education to the dialogue table have been frustrated and since the national leadership of the Association could no longer contain the restiveness of its members in the Unity Colleges and FEQAS, no further notice would be required after the expiration of the 21 days ultimatum issued on Thursday 23rd January 2025 before Trade Union actions start in the Unity Schools and FEQAS.“All stakeholders are urged to prevail on the Federal Ministry of Education to embrace dialogue now instead of waiting for the industrial actions to start only for them to begin to plead with the Union to sheath its swords.”

Lagos commissioner assures Lagosians of Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to grassroots development

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso has assured residents of dividends of democracy to the grassroots as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration continues to unveil new projects across local governments and local council development areas.

Omotoso, made the remark at a media stakeholders’ forum in Ikeja, noted that the New Massey Street Children’s Hospital project has reached an advanced stage and would be the biggest pediatric facility in West Africa, saying that the facility will be set for commissioning later this year.

The commissioner mentioned that other projects in the health sector, such as the 280-bed General Hospital in Ojo, the Psychiatric Hospital in Ketu Ejinrin, and infrastructure upgrades at Ibeju-Lekki and Lagos General Hospitals, would also expand the resources available to residents for top-notch medical services.

“This year, the present administration’s vision is to build on the gains of Y2024 through the commissioning of projects that would impact communities, especially at the grassroots,” Omotoso said.

Therefore, he called on young entrepreneurs to take advantage of the funding support provided by the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, LSETF, and other initiatives of the Lagos State Government by applying for loans and grants to boost their trade.

Omotoso noted that many startups have become stable and profitable through support from the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, LSETF, and other agencies of the Lagos State Government that provide financial support to growing business entities.

Speaking on the benefits derived from tourism, Omotoso stated that Lagos would continue to explore initiatives in the sector to boost revenues, attract foreign exchange, and position Lagos as a genuinely competitive global destination.

“This year, we are focused on making significant progress in revitalizing cultural, religious, and recreational infrastructure across the State. Therefore, we will sustain efforts to restore the historic Elemoro Palace in Ibeju-Lekki and the Princess Erelu Kuti Tomb, commemorating one of Lagos’ most prominent historical figures,” he said.

While maintaining that more initiatives propelled by the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda would be unveiled in Y2025, Omotoso assured that the Sanwo-Olu administration would not abandon any ongoing project in the State.

The commissioner expressed gratitude to media men for the publicity given to the Sanwo-Olu administration’s giant strides, and he called for more support from community newspapers because they have gained prominence in creating awareness at the grassroots.

“There will be more of such media engagements this year. We appreciate feedback from the media because you stay among the people who rely on you to bring the government’s attention to their needs,” Omotoso said.

  • We’ve not borrowed a dime since 2023 —Delta govt

We’ve not borrowed a dime since 2023 —Delta govt

Delta State government has said it has not entered into any borrowing relationship with any institution, saying that it had not borrowed a dime since Governor Sheriff Oborevwori took over governance.

The Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, who disclosed this at a press conference in Asaba on Friday, noted that the state remained, in terms of financial terms, the strongest financial state standing in this country.

He emphasized that contrary to reports by an online news medium, “this state has not entered into any borrowing relationship whatsoever, whether partnership, individual, corporate, bank, local, national or international.

“We have not borrowed a dime since this administration took effect on the 29th of May, 2023. I can state categorically in any forum I found myself, that Delta State remains, in terms of financial terms, the strongest financial state standing in this country.

“I say so with every emphasis because I know the state’s finances, and I say that we are clearly the strongest financial state in Nigeria.

“I can stand this debate at any point in time because I know the balances as I speak to you today. I know the efforts that are being made by this administration.

“We stand categorically, heads up, to state that this administration has not borrowed a dime since 29th of May, 2023. We have paid so much in terms of construction, we have made sure that all debts are being paid down as seriously as we can.

“We have also improved in terms of contractual relationships with our contractors. Before now, it is difficult for us to give our contractors advanced payments.”

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, described Oborevwori as a man of impeccable integrity who has demonstrated a lot of transparency in the running of the affairs of the state.

  • Oborevwori: Raising the bar of governance with street credibility

Oborevwori: Raising the bar of governance with street credibility

Gradually but steadily, many are now coming to terms with the unique leadership skills and patriotic fervour of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State. All the misconceptions, misinformation, and falsehood that were concocted about him by his traducers and naysayers are now giving way to the sudden realisation that Governor Oborevwori is a classic study in governance with his unswerving sense of mission and determined strides.

Because he is not one to hug the limelight or engage in needless political grandstanding, many, perhaps understandably, misconstrued his self-effacing mien and grassroots approach to politics and governance to be a sign of weakness, or inability to grasp the complexities of modern statecraft. But after 19 months on the saddle, it is becoming increasingly clear that Governor Oborevwori is a masterclass in leadership.

Evidence of his rising profile as a national political leader were on full display last December during the marriage ceremony of his son in Asaba. Political heavyweights across the political divide made their presence felt with their obvious enthusiasm and delight. The list of attendees included President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his vice, Shettima (both represented by Aviation minister, Festus Keyamo), governors, national assembly members, ministers, and business tycoons in the likes of Tony Elumelu and Gabriel Ogbechie. Not to forget of course, Oborevwori’s predecessor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

The event spoke volumes of Governor Oborevwori’s ability to forge friendships and build synergy across board for the purposes of a stable polity and good governance, a fact that was eloquently attested to by the President in describing Governor Oborevwori as “a bridge builder and model political leader.” Such a profound validation coming from the President and leader of the ruling APC is a tacit endorsement of the governor’s trademark humility, and bi-partisan approach to governance that prioritises the interests and well being of the citizens above any partisan or parochial considerations. It is to be said that Governor Oborevwori is quietly emerging as a potent political force on the national stage.

Even at home, notable political actors are taking note and, even if subdued, are weighing in on the governor’s character, leadership prowess, and achievements so far. Senator Peter Nwaoboshi was recently quoted by a blogger thus:”..I know Sheriff as a humble, fearless, and respectful young man who does not fall for pressure.” In truth, that is the paradox that is Governor Oborevwori. Humble yet fearless. Tough but tender hearted. Audacious, yet respectful. Blunt but empathetic. In a viral Facebook post and, obviously, in veiled reference to Governor Oborevwori, Felix Tony Nwaka, former commissioner in the state, alluded to the enigma that is Oborevwori. Titled, “WHAT IF HE TURNS OUT THE BEST,” Nwaka waxed poetic:

“He appears focused on his assignment. What if he delivers on the job? What if he surpasses all his predecessors? Could this be the man we’ve all been waiting for? All the while we searched afar, he lay humbly at our feet. The gold that is covered with mud. Not as glorious as his forebears, but exudes a curious calm dignity. Is he the one appointed to take us to unprecedented heights of distinction? Could it be we are about to experience again the good old days? When we were the envy of all. When our exceptional exploits, powered by a united force, resounded at the farthest reaches imaginable. Who knows? You never can tell. Sometimes the expectations of man are at variance with cosmic constructions. Indeed, God works in mysterious ways. What can mortal do but to watch his reign and await the judgement of posterity.”

As I finalised this piece, Elder Statesman, Chief Edwin Clark delivered a resounding verdict. “Governor Oborevwori,” he emphatically declared, “has achieved remarkable progress in development and democracy enhancement in Delta State. I urge him to continue undistracted, ensuring that no community is left behind.” Hardly surprising, therefore, that Oborevwori is among the four nominees for Governor of the Year award by Arise Television and ThisDay newspaper.

These encomiums are pouring in as Governor Oborevwori last week commenced his statewide inspection and monitoring of projects in the state. A rigorous exercise that will take him and his team to all the ongoing projects in the twenty-five local government areas of the state, it brought to the fore the governor’s relentless drive for excellence and passion for unrivalled service delivery. Even more significantly, it showcased the governor’s acclaimed street credibility. Touring projects in Asaba Capital Territory and environs, the contractors and site engineers were astounded by the governor’s understanding of the construction processes and attention to details.

He came with his measuring tape to assess the exact size of the formworks on drainages to ensure they were in line with the approved designs. He could take one look at the rods being used on some of the sites and tell the contractor that they were using the wrong materials for the job. Each time, he was proved right. No surprises there, for long before he was thrust into the dizzying heights of public service, Oborevwori was a successful businessman with wide ranging interests in construction, real estate, and oil and gas. Most of the contractors and site supervisors were left rueing their bad luck as the governor expressed his displeasure and directed that the right materials be used at their own costs. And for good measure, two state officials are facing sanctions for issuing certificates and facilitating payment for uncompleted projects.

The first two days of the inspection exercise revealed two things. First, Governor Oborevwori means business; he is not to be trifled with when it comes to delivering quality and excellent jobs. As he stressed at the press interview at the end of day two, he was not out to put up a “media show.” He simply wants the jobs done and done to specification. Nothing more. Nothing less. Oborevwori’s undiluted passion for excellence reflects in everything he does and he wants to see that translated into every project in the state. Secondly, he is not fazed by the rigours and inconveniences of inspecting every ongoing project in the state. Gifted with a voracious appetite for work, it was evident that Governor Oborevwori is irrevocably committed to ensuring that Deltans get full value from every naira spent.

The Governor’s only distress comes from our national penchant to cut corners and maximise profit at the expense of the public good. His pain was palpable as he lamented that indigenous contractors were “majorly” culpable in this regard. Hence, his patriotic appeal to all and sundry to embrace the timeless values of honesty, transparency, accountability, contentment, and love for country and state. The message from the governor was clear:  let us all be the change that we want to see in society.

‘Quit South West now or die’ – Gani Adams, Yoruba leaders warn B/Haram, ISWAP operatives hibernating in region

….Sleeper cells’ll be crushed before activated — Oyebanji’s Security Adviser
Infiltrators must be flushed out — YCE

By Dayo Johnson, Dapo Akinrefon, Rotimi Ojomoyela, James Ogunnaike & Laolu Elijah

Following the infiltration of the South-West region by suspected fleeing Islamic State in West Africa Province, ISWAP, and Boko Haram terrorists from North-West and North-East, there is uneasy calm in the region.

Many, especially in the interiors and border communities, are living in fear over the likely activities of the terrorists.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had raised the alarm that fleeing bandits and ISWAP fighters are making their way to the South, saying this may heighten insecurity.

To prevent the rise in insecurity following this development, stakeholders, including the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams; the Yoruba Council of Elders, YCE, Soludero Hunters’ Association and Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, have issued a stern warning to Boko Haram and ISWAP members hibernating in the region to leave the South-West now or die.

Sunday Vanguard reliably gathered that the respective state commands of the police, Amotekun and local hunters are battle-ready to confront any form of insecurity.

Miners hiding B-Haram, ISWAP members – Gani Adams

Gani Adams, who admitted that Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters are hibernating in the South-West, accused miners of hiding the terrorists.

Adams revealed that as the Yoruba generalissimo, countless letters have been written to South-West governors on the need for collaboration, adding that all has fell on deaf ears

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland said: “We are worried over the influx of Boko Haram fighters in the South-West. We have discussed at the Aare-in-Council meeting, the OPC meetings and South-West Security Stakeholders’ group.

“ The influx of northerners in Ilesha and Ile Ife is because of the mining activities going on there”, he said.

“We have seen camps of over 30,000 northerners around Ilesha and Ile Ife forests. They have created villages around there, but there are no Yoruba people living there, unfortunately, most of the communities in Ilesha have been overrun by these mining activities. It is easy for the miners to hide Boko Haram and ISWAP members. We have an influx of ISWAP members in the South-West.

“I have written to the governors that I am ready to cooperate with them on the security of Yorubaland. All hands must be on deck on security matters.

“It is unfortunate that our political class play politics with the security of their states. We don’t have the intention to take the state from the governors and that is why we call it synergy.

“Since I spoke about it in January 2024, nothing has been done by the governors. As the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, the traditional Defense Minister, according to the history of Yorubaland, I have to be given a role. I cannot force myself on the governors but if they don’t give me a task, it will be difficult for me and if I try to do it, I will be intruding on governance, it can cause me problems.

That is why I am being careful. I wrote letters last year to all the governors but there was no reply. If they don’t respond, we will continue to do the little we can do underneath but history will judge all of us. Anywhere you see terrorists, it is always about mineral resources, they scare the people away and cause a crisis in the area.

“We have the structure, the assets and some of the best brains who can be helpful to the South West. As far I am concerned, the ball is left in the court of the governors to do the needful.”

Asked whether there has been any form of collaboration between the OPC and Amotekun corps, Adams said: “When Amotekun was founded, OPC members, vigilantes, hunters and other private security groups were recruited but it was not enough. For instance, Oyo State is big, you cannot say 1,000 Amotekun corps can cover such a vast state. They will need like 30,000 personnel. Unfortunately, the governor can only cater for only 2000 personnel, but we can back it up with relevant security groups coordinated by my office.

“If you say I should not take charge, I will step back but mind you, I always do some behind-the-scenes spiritual work on securing Yorubaland because I don’t want the issue to go out of hand.

“Even if I do some behind the scenes spiritual work and I am not involved in strategy, it is not enough.”

    Bandits’ location known – Hunters

In Oyo State, sources said the state government, hunters and OPC members are aware of the location of the bandits and terrorists.

Giving insights to this, the National President of Soludero Hunters’ Association, Oba Nureni Akintola Anabi, said all hunters know where the bandits could be hibernating and they are ready to smoke them out if adequately mobilised.

Akintola noted that though Governor Seyi Makinde is yet to invite the hunters, they know all nooks and crannies of the forest.

He said: “As hunters, who are familiar with all nooks and crannies of the forest, we know where the bandits could be hiding. We are awaiting the directives from President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde and the police. Once we get their approval, we will move into all the forests and arrest these terrorists.”

He added that the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, had already contacted him to support them to locate the bandits.

“The Civil Defense Corps have called me to support them and we are ready to join forces with them. We have been hunting in these forests for ages and we know where they should be,” he said

    Ogun activates security assets

In Ogun State, a reliable source in the command told Sunday Vanguard that the state government, in collaboration with the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has activated all human and material assets to keep the state safe and prevent bandits and terrorists from entering the state.

The source, in a chat with Vanguard, said: “The command has activated all human and material assets to keep Ogun State safe. All Area Commanders and DPOs in the state have been alerted to keep vigilant in their various jurisdictions.”

He added that the command is also working in synergy with other security agencies both within and outside the state to ensure law and order are not breached.

Also speaking, the State Deputy Coordinator of Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Alao Olusola, said the group has been partnering with the police to ensure the security of lives and property in the State.

Olusola said: “As members of OPC, we are partnering with the police in our different areas to fight the insecurity in our areas.

“If government in the South-West can give us a go-ahead to fight insecurity and give us necessary support, we are ready to flush out all criminal elements in the region.”

    Ogun adopts a multi-pronged approach

Ogun State government, on its part, said it is deeply concerned about the rising insecurity in the South-West, saying it is not leaving any stone unturned in ensuring the security of lives and property in the state.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Mr Kayode Akinmade, the state government has adopted a multi-pronged approach to tackle this ugly trend effectively.

Akinmade said: “The state government is deeply concerned about the rising cases of insecurity, including terror, killings and kidnappings, and has adopted a multi-pronged approach to tackle this ugly trend effectively.

“The state government has adopted some strategies, which include strengthening security infrastructure, through the establishment of a well-equipped joint task force; comprising police, military and local vigilantes for intelligence-driven operations.”

He added that the state government has also adopted a community policing system, through the “empowerment of local security outfits, such as the Amotekun Corps, to support law enforcement agencies in securing rural and urban areas.”

    1,000 Amotekun corps recruited

In the area of local security forces, he said Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved recruitment of an additional 1,000 personnel for the corps to further strengthen security across the nooks and crannies of the state.

On the arrangements to counter the infiltration of the undesired elements, the state government, he said, is “conducting regular verification and registration of commercial motorcyclists to distinguish legitimate operators from criminal elements.

“Implementing skills acquisition programs and providing alternative livelihoods to reduce reliance on informal or illegal activities.

“To prevent criminals from using rented properties as hideouts, the government has mandated house owners to register tenants with local authorities.

“In summary, the state government remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all residents through robust policies, community collaboration, and effective law enforcement. Security is a collective responsibility, and we urge every citizen to play their part by staying vigilant and cooperating with the authorities.”

South West not a place for bandits, Amotekun commanders vow

In Ondo State, security operatives have assured that they are on top of the situation.

Speaking on the infiltration of the region by fleeing terrorists, the chairman of Amotekun in the South-West, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, hinted that the planned joint security patrol of forests in South-West to be embarked upon by Amotekun is “to flush out bandits who have invaded the region.”

Adeleye, who is the Ondo State Commander of the security outfit, said Amotekun security rangers have been deployed at strategic positions in the forest reserves in the region even before the influx of the bandits.

He said: “We are determined to stop the influx and drive away those that have sneaked into the region.
“The region is not home for criminals. We have put in place another strategy that I won’t want to disclose for security reasons.

“What’s certain is that we are on top of the situation and ready to protect our people against these criminals.

“The South-West is not a place for them to hide or stay, we will smoke them out and send them away. The breaches at our borders had reduced as a result of the activities of the Amotekun.”

Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Security Matters, Olugbenga Atiba, said that the state government is taking proactive measures to address the wave of insecurity in the state

Atiba said: “We have provided adequate logistic support to security agencies operating in the state to ensure they are well-equipped to tackle any security challenges.

“We have also asked residents to make security their top priority by being mindful of the information they share on social media and avoiding putting too much information about their personal lives online.
“Also, we have been conducting regular joint border patrols with neighboring states to prevent the influx of bandits into our state.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our citizens, and we will continue to work tirelessly to curb the growing menace. We’ll make the state too hot for criminals.”

Corroborating what the Amotekun commander said, the state police commissioner, Wilfred Afolabi, said security across the state has been beefed up to stop infiltration of bandits.

Afolabi, who declined to specify security measures put in place, said that the state police command has been collaborating with other security personnel to arrest the ugly situation.

The police chief said: “There is no hiding place for persons with criminal tendencies in any part of the state. Our men are alert to nip in the bud any security challenge in any part of the state.”

Sleeper cells’ll be extricated, crushed before activated —Ekiti State govt

Speaking with Vanguard in Ado-Ekiti, the Special Adviser on Security to Ekiti State Governor, General Ebenezer Ogundana, retd, said his office is aware of the situation and strategies being put in place ensure that the infiltrators are stopped before they advance through the borders and their sleeper cells are extricated and crushed before they are activated.

On what the South-West governors have resolved to do, he said: “The governors of have resolved that they won’t allow any of these terrorists to use South-West as a base to destabilise the region.
“Governor Oyebanji has given security agencies in the state a marching order to ensure that we don’t have miscreants around us here.

“In Ekiti, we are already making adequate provision for any unforeseen circumstances. I want to assure that we are even reinforcing it because of this new development, we have already made adequate provisions to contain them when they come to Ekiti.

“All the security agencies in the state, including the Amotekun Corps, Agro Rangers are already aware, we have put them on high alert, we have also informed our people in the border communities to notify us of any strange movements or faces in their areas.

“We are engaging the local government chairmen and traditional rulers and the local hunters to be watchful, we are putting eyes on miscreants’ possible hotspots, because if we don’t allow them to build up, there’s no way for them to break out.

“We have also organised intelligence gathering, training in martial arts and indigenous defence mechanisms in case of critical situations when the weapon falls, they can still defend themselves.

“From the outset, all the security personnel work within their community, they are localized, they stay in their local government, it’s only when they want to use them for special operations that they go out; all of these people are based in their respective local governments.

“This is because they know the link between the people and they know how they are able to identify who is coming in and who is going out.

“We also prepare them locally for their own protection because they are local forces.

“Security agencies in the state are trying their best to meet Oyebanji’s expectations and they don’t want to disappoint the people of Ekiti State. We have learnt from our past experiences and we are battle ready.

“We have met this year to review the situation of last year and we have re-mapped and redesigned the security architecture of the state to bring it to term with the new realities.

“I’m assuring the people of Ekiti State that they are safe, they should go about their normal business without any fear.

“We are working together and synergising strategies with our immediate neighbours such as Kogi, Kwara, Ondo and Osun, sharing information on how best to combat crime and criminality in our states. We have also instructed the local government in border areas to link up with their counterparts in neighboring states and keep vigilance to nip any incursion in the bud.”

Vigilance and recruitment of more personnel for Amotekun Corps

”The vigilance, recruitment of locals and posting them in their respective communities have been of immense benefit to us, it has enabled us to discover sleeper cells, preempting their action before they strike. You will observe that Ekiti has been relatively peaceful for sometime now

“The Ekiti State government has put Amotekun Operatives on special salary since December, 2024; they almost have a 250 per cent increment in their salary and it’s a salary that can take anybody home.

“The allocation for their monthly grants, servicing, and fueling of their vehicles, has increased too.

Sometimes, towards the end of 2024, some vehicles were procured for Amotekun to enable them to upscale their performance. There is also a plan in the pipeline to increase their capacity, alongside other sister agencies like Agro Marshall, Peace Corps and Anti grazing Management.”

Infiltrators must be flushed out — YCE

In its reaction, Yoruba Council of Elders, YCE, urged the South-West governors to flush out the bandits.

YCE, in a statement by its Secretary-General, Chief Oladipo Oyewole, said: “The infiltration of bandits into the forests of North West to Osun and Oyo states is of great concern to all.

“For anyone who knows the geography of those areas, it is porous and accessible. Those descriptions alone must be seen as a source of worry for Yorubaland.

“The YCE, having taken deep cognizance of the need for the safety of lives and properties of Nigerians, feels worried and more concerned for a need for proactive measures to assail the fear that is beginning to grip the hearts and minds of those who care! For the governors of Oyo and Osun States to have come into the open to speak about the fear means there are a lot of issues of internal security.

“Governments of Osun, Oyo and Lagos cannot and must not relax. Law enforcement agencies too must prepare. The Yoruba Council of Elders, YCE, therefore, urges all agencies of government (along with both federal and states) to be proactive in this unanimous struggle to chase them out.”

  • My fears about court case in Abuja — Nnamdi Kanu

My fears about court case in Abuja — Nnamdi Kanu

Detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has said that he is not expecting favourable judgment from any court in Abuja.

This was conveyed by his Lead Counsel, Chief Aloy Ejimakor, after visiting him at the Abuja headquarters of the Department of State Service, DSS, where he has been in confinement since June 2021 when he was abducted and extraordinary renditioned from Kenya.

According to Ejimakor, the IPOB leader expressed frustration over fragrant disregard for due process and the rule of law in the handling of his matter.

Ejimakor, in a post, said:”He asked us to inform the general public that he’s not expecting any favourable judgment from any courts in Abuja because his cases are not decided in accordance with the rules of law but the rules of politics – dirty and deadly politics.

“The way and manner the laws are applied to him are not in conformity with the written laws of Nigeria or the pertinent international laws.

“Those benefitting from insecurity are the ones deciding what negative decisions to deliver because if justice were to be done, the well-orchestrated and heavily funded attacks and demonisation of his person and his lofty mission would no longer resonate with the public.

“Onyendu MNK urged the public to read all court decisions and judgements pertaining to him and IPOB to understand that what the law says is not what is being done. He insists that his trial is a sham designed to destroy truth and justice.”

Recall that Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja High Court had, mid last year, recused herself from the matter, but the matter, after sometime, was re-assigned to her amidst protests by Kanu and his legal team.

The roundtable, with the theme, “Unlocking Nigeria’s Potential: Exploring the Synergy of Sports Tourism and Foreign Direct Investment”, brought together stakeholders to brainstorm on how to harness Nigeria’s rich sport tourism opportunities.

It is organised by World Football Exhibition in collaboration Chinese Tourism Promoters Initiative and Emirati Innovative Services.

According to Obi, sports tourism and direct foreign investment hold the key to unlocking Nigeria’s economic potential and propelling the country towards sustainable growth and development.

Obi who was represented by Peter Ameh, Public Affairs Analyst and National Secretary of Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) said Nigerians’ passion for sport was an indication that sports tourism would flourish if developed.

He said by developing sports tourism infrastructure and hosting international sports events Nigeria can attract foreign investors, who are drawn to countries with a strong reputation for hosting successful events.

“Sports tourism, a rapidly growing industry worldwide, presents a unique opportunity for Nigeria to leverage its passion for sports, particularly football, to attract tourists and generate revenue.

“With a large and enthusiastic fan base, Nigeria can develop sports tourism infrastructure, such as stadiums, training facilities, and sports museums, to host international sports events and attract visitors from around the world.

“This can create jobs, stimulate local economies, and promote cultural exchange.

“Direct foreign investment (DFI) is another critical driver of economic growth and development. Nigeria has historically struggled to attract significant DFI, due to concerns about corruption, insecurity, and regulatory uncertainty.

“However, By creating a more attractive investment climate, Nigeria can tap into the vast pool of foreign capital, expertise, and technology, to drive economic growth, create jobs, and reduce poverty”,he said.

Obi further said that sports tourism could provide a platform for promoting Nigeria’s culture, history, and natural beauty, enhancing the country’s global reputation and attractiveness to foreign investors.

He therefore called on policymakers to prioritise these sectors and work to create an environment that is conducive to investment, growth, and development.

“To discover the potential of sports tourism and DFI, the Nigerian government must take a proactive approach to developing the necessary infrastructure, policies, and regulatory frameworks.

“This includes investing in sports tourism infrastructure, such as stadiums, training facilities, and sports museums, as well as implementing policies to promote DFI, such as tax incentives, streamlined regulatory procedures, and investment promotion initiatives.

“In addition, the government must work to address the challenges that have historically hindered Nigeria’s ability to attract DFI, including corruption, insecurity, and regulatory uncertainty.

“This requires a commitment to transparency, accountability, and good governance, as well as investments in security and law enforcement”,he said.

Earlier, MrAkin Laniyi, Project Director, World Football Exhibition, told NAN on the sideline that said the event was an opportunity for stakeholders from both the tourism and sport sectors to work together.

“This is platform where we interact and for Nigeria’s to draw inspiration from what we are doing here and be able to contribute to sports development .

“It is an avenue to emphasise the very strong relationship between sports and tourism which is easily lost sometimes in people’s minds, but they are very strongly connected.

  • ‘My former manager took case to court, not me’ — Mercy Chinwo breaks silence

‘My former manager took case to court, not me’ — Mercy Chinwo breaks silence

Gospel musician Mercy Chinwo on Saturday broke her silence on the battle between her and Ezekiel ThankGod aka Eezeetee, her former manager.

The singer published a statement on Instagram signed by her lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi.

“Contrary to the sensational narratives, Minister Mercy did not initiate any court action case against Mr Ezekiel ThankGod (Eezeetee) regarding her music catalogue. At no point has she claimed that a 50/50 revenue split from her DSP earnings is unfair,” the statement read.

Mercy said her relationship with Eezeetee began when she was his backup singer in Port Harcourt. In 2017, they signed a contract and her song ‘Excess Love’ released that same year was a success.

She further said that it became expedient to relocate to Lagos in 2018. And the team did. Mercy said she played a role in singer Judikay joining the organisation in early 2019.

Mercy said things changed by the end of 2019 and got out of hand the following year. She said her contract expired in 2022 and accused Eezeetee of fraudulently obtaining a new contract in 2019 and making it appear as though it was the same one signed in 2017.

The new contract, a 25-page document, gave “lifetime ownership of all music works to Eezeetee and couched in a manner intended to perpetually have Minister Mercy in servitude.”

Mercy said there have been several attempts at reconciliation, including an intervention by Apostle Anselm Madubuko, but none yielded fruits.

The 34-year-old said during an EFCC investigation in 2024, Eezeetee admitted holding back $274,000 as revenue from digital platforms. She said the money was recovered peacefully.

According to her, Eezeetee also admitted before EFCC officials for the first time that he tried to manipulate her with a different contract.

She said he pleaded in tears that the matter be settled amicably. However, he turned back and filed a court case against Mercy, Judikay and the EFCC separately.

Mercy said the EFCC then reciprocated by charging him with fraud of which a warrant of arrest was issued against him and later withdrawn after his lawyer’s intervention.
