5 injured in Computer Village store explosion – Police

The Police Command in Lagos State says it is investigating the explosion that occurred inside a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera dealer shop in Ikeja.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

He said that the incident happened on Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Kodesho Street at Computer Village in the Ikeja area of the state.

“The scene of the explosion and adjoining areas were immediately taken over and cordoned off by operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit of the command, the Mobile Police Detachment and Conventional Police Teams.

“The scene was swept by the EOD experts of the command to ensure the safety of residents and facilitate a comprehensive investigation to determine the actual cause of the explosion,” he said.

The image maker said that the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Olohundare Jimoh, arrived at the scene within minutes for an on-the-spot assessment.

“While investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the explosion and other factors that might have caused the incident, the CP urges Lagos residents to remain calm and not to panic.

“The public are enjoined to go about their lawful engagements and businesses peacefully without fear or apprehension, as the scene of the explosion and the adjoining area have been rendered safe and secured,” he said.

According to him, five persons inside and around the shop that sustained various degrees of injury have been rescued and taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for medical attention.

The spokesperson said that the command assured the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and security throughout the state. (NAN)

  • Visit Borno’-ex-state commissioner, Kareto challenges Tinubu’s minister

Visit Borno’-ex-state commissioner, Kareto challenges Tinubu’s minister

A Chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and former Commissioner of Trade, Commerce and Industry, Hon.Yerima Lawan Kareto has extended an invitation to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris to find time, come to Borno and follow him to Damasak, the Council Headquarters of Mobbar local government area alone.

Kareto who hails from Damasak, hitherto a liberated border town with Niger Republic and about 190.5km drive from Maiduguri, the state capital said, he will personally drive the Minister through the thick and thin, so as to see things for himself, before making any statement on the increasing renewed Boko Haram onslaught across the region.

Recall last Tuesday at the end of an Expanded Security Council Meeting comprised of Heads of Security agencies, traditional rulers and other stakeholders in Maiduguri, Governor Babagana Zulum, who chaired the important and timely meeting suggested that the state may be losing control to Boko Haram insurgents, due to the renewed Boko Haram attacks which have so far killed many lives as well as dislodged Military Formations in Wulgo, Sabon Gari, Wajirko, Izge among others.

However, in a press statement issued to Journalists on Wednesday signed by the Minister, Idris disagreed with Zulum’s claim. The minister emphasised that the administration remains committed to combating terrorism and banditry across the nation.

He argued that the security agencies are working round-the-clock to bring the situation in parts of Borno and other states under control.

The Minister’s statement attracted wider public condemnations. Although, a day after (Thursday 10th April 2025), the minister’s media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim ‘back- pedalled’ and described the report credited to his Boss as “categorically false and a gross distortion of the minister’s remarks.”

Ibrahim stressed that, at no point did the minister say, “Ignore Zulum, Boko Haram has not taken over Borno.”

However, reacting in a press statement signed by Hon. Kareto, a copy which was made available to our Correspondent at the week end, the former Borno Commissioner said, such terse statement from the Minister’s Media aide alleging that he (the Minister) was misquoted, is not enough, but inviting Idris to Borno would also avail him the opportunity to personally tender apology to Government and the good people of Borno.

Kareto expressed shock at the Minister who sits at his comfort zone in Abuja and be dishing out statement himself or through his media aide on the subject matter. He insisted that such back -pedalling tactics were not enough to make Government and the good people of Borno believe that he (Minister Idris) was actually misquoted.

“Let me informed the Minister that such statement is not enough to cool the high tensions raised on the resilient Borno people who have trust and confidence on Governor Babagana Zulum’s good governance, this can be attested to numerous people oriented projects and the unrelenting support in cash and kind to security agencies since 2019 to date.

“Minister Idris have to come to Borno under my personal invitation to follow me to Damasak. This would avail him the opportunity to tender an unreserved apology and to tell Nigerians whether Governor Zulum, the Shehu Of Borno, Dr. Abubakar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi and other security agencies who deliberated extensively on the renewed attacks, were all better informed that Borno is losing ground to terrorists or not”.

Kareto who said Borno people stood firmly and in solidarity at all times to the present administration, urges Governor Zulum and the security agencies, especially the troops in the frontline not to be deterred by the Minister’s outburst, but remain committed and focused in the fight against the renewed killings and other criminalities bedevilling many communities in the state

  • Gabon holds first presidential election since 2023 coup

Gabon holds first presidential election since 2023 coup

Gabonese voters began casting ballots on Saturday in a presidential election with eight candidates that is widely expected to make junta chief Brice Oligui Nguema the oil-rich central African country’s first elected leader since his 2023 coup.

Oligui, the general who led the August 30, 2023, putsch that ended 55 years of iron-fisted dynastic rule by the Bongo family, who were accused of looting Gabon’s wealth, has been leading in opinion polls.

Snaking queues were seen outside polling stations in Libreville, the seaside capital.

Aurele Ossantanga Mouila, 30, voted for the first time ever after finishing his shift as a croupier in a casino.

“I did not have confidence in the earlier regime,” he said.

Oligui took the role of transitional president while overseeing the formation of a government that includes civilians, tasked with drawing up a new constitution.

The country of 2.3 million people is casting ballots at a time of high unemployment, regular power and water shortages, a lack of infrastructure and heavy government debt.

Despite successive plans, only 2,000 of the 10,000 kilometres (6,213 miles) of roads in the country are “usable”, according to official data. Derailments are frequent on the sole rail link and youth unemployment exceeds 60 percent in rural areas.

Oligui ditched his military uniform as he campaigned for a seven-year term against seven rivals, including Alain-Claude Bilie By Nze, who served as prime minister under Ali Bongo before the coup.

    – ‘The special candidate’ –

Around 920,000 voters are eligible to cast their ballots from 7:00 am (0600 GMT), with the polling stations closing at 6:00 pm and final results expected on Monday.

Oligui has predicted a “historic victory” in the election.

“The builder is here, the special candidate, the one you called,” Oligui said Thursday among the music and dancing at his closing rally in the capital Libreville.

But critics accuse Oligui, who had promised to hand power back to civilians, of failing to move on from the years of plunder of the country’s vast mineral wealth under the Bongos, whom he served for years.

Oligui’s image has been plastered all over the capital Libreville alongside his campaign slogan “C’BON” — a play on the French words for “It’s good” and the junta chief’s initials — while those of his rivals are nowhere to be seen.

Bilie By Nze, his main opponent, has cast himself as the candidate for a “complete rupture”.

He has accused Oligui, who led the Republican Guard in the Bongo years, of representing a continuity of the old system.

Oligui served as patriarch Omar Bongo’s former aide-de-camp before becoming chief of the presidential guard under his son Ali Bongo.

    – ‘Transparent ballot’ –

Whoever wins will have to meet the high hopes of a country where one in three people lives below the poverty line despite its vast resource wealth, according to the World Bank.

Gabon’s debt rose to 73.3 percent of GDP last year and is projected to reach 80 percent this year.

Analyst Neyer Kenga likewise pointed to “the return to constitutional order” as one of the key campaign issues, in the hope the vote puts an end to the country’s strife.

In the past weeks, the interior ministry has been at pains to insist Saturday’s vote will be “a transparent ballot and an election accessible” to all.

“Today all Gabonese are firmly in favour of a democratic game that is played within the rules,” said Neyer Kenga.

Following years marked by a post-vote crisis in 2009 and 2016’s bloodily repressed protests — not to mention the August 2023 coup — “the people’s response at the ballot box is never known in advance”, she added.

NiMet warns of intense heat in Gombe, Abuja, Kano, others

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of severe heat stress in Gombe State and 17 other northern states.

The other states are Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This is contained in its weather outlook released on Friday and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Saturday by Gayus Musa, the meteorological manager for Gombe State.

The agency said temperatures were expected to rise up to 40 degrees Celsius from Saturday, causing thermal discomfort in the affected states.

“After 3 days of rainfall, discomfort levels are set to rise from April 12 due to high temperatures and clear skies.

“Maximum temperatures in the north are reaching up to 40°C; with clear skies and moisture in the air, heat and discomfort will be more intense.”

Musa urged Gombe residents to take proactive measures, as extreme heat had significant health implications.

He warned that the rising temperatures and high humidity levels could cause thermal discomfort.

He advised residents to, therefore, avoid excessive sun exposure and seek cooler environments while recommending drinking plenty of water and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.

“I advise residents to stay in well-ventilated areas, wear breathable clothing, drink plenty of water, avoid peak sun hours between 12pm and 3pm, and use sun protection.

“Also, let’s always check up on vulnerable persons like our children and the elderly persons in our communities,” he said.

He urged stakeholders to create more awareness about heat stress risks and preventive measures essential for healthy living. (NAN)

China begins new 84% tariffs on U.S. imports

style=”box-sizing: inherit; margin-bottom: 16px; margin-top: 16px; color: #303030; font-family: Nunito, sans-serif; font-weight: 600;”>China officially commenced the implementation of its planned retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods on Thursday, imposing an additional 84 per cent duty on imports from the U.S.
The move came after Washington escalated its trade pressure, with U.S. President Donald Trump announcing on Wednesday a new plan to raise tariffs on Chinese imports even further to 125 per cent.

Chinese officials have however rejected the U.S. approach, accusing Washington of blackmail and pledging to resist pressure in the ongoing trade dispute.

As tensions rise with the U.S, China is reaching out to other partners.

On Tuesday, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao had a phone call with EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič to discuss issues including enhancing China-EU economic ties.

According to a Chinese statement, Wang criticised the U.S. tariff strategy as harmful to global trade and urged cooperation to uphold the rules-based multilateral system.

It added that China and the EU agreed to start talks on market access and improving the business environment for companies.

China has remained one of the EU’s most important trading partners.

In 2024, it was the bloc’s third-largest export destination and its top source of imports.

However, the EU continued to run a significant trade deficit with China, which last year stood at around 300 billion euros (329 billion dollars).

Meanwhile, tariffs for some other countries have been temporarily suspended. So far, Beijing has not responded to the latest U.S. measures.

  • Rivers: Some elders now speaking like children, Wike’s aide chides Ada George

Rivers: Some elders now speaking like children, Wike’s aide chides Ada George

Lere Olayinka, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, has said that it was unfortunate that some elders in Rivers State, who played ostrich when suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara was acting like an emperor are now speaking like “children who lost their most priced toys.”

Olayinka, in a statement on Thursday, described it as funny and unfortunate that a former Governor of Rivers State, Ada George, who was among those clapping for Fubara, when he was sitting on the salary and other entitlements of fellow indigenes of Rivers State, who are members of the State House of Assembly is now speaking on who should be blamed for the state of emergency in the State.

During a media briefing, Ada George had accused the FCT Minister of orchestrating the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, including the imposition of a state of emergency and the appointment of sole administrators in all 23 local government areas.

Responding, the FCT Minister’s Spokesperson, who said people like Ada George lacked what it takes to be called an elder, said; “unlike these people masquerading as ‘Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum’, genuine elders sit in a position of neutrality when there are conflicts among younger ones so that they will enjoy credibility and respect while sitting on the high table to resolve the issues.”

He said; “When Fubara was orchestrating the burning and demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly, supposed elders like Ada George were hailing him. They were telling him it was normal for three members to run a House of Assembly of 32 members, with 11 as a quorum of one-third that can sit and 22 as two-thirds that can pass budgets.

“When the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, intervened in the crisis and resolutions signed by all parties, it was this same Ada George that described the President’s intervention as ‘executive rascality.’

“He (Ada George) went further to say that the intervention by the President ‘contravened the doctrine and practice of separation of powers and unilaterally suspended the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.’ They were everywhere calling the President a meddlesome interloper and hailing Fubara.

“Even when the Supreme Court ruled and made unambiguous pronouncement, Ada George and his so-called elders still saw no reason they should tell Fubara to come down from his high horse of arrogance and lawlessness. Rather, they watched as he reeled out threats upon threats, including openly saying that he would give instructions as to what to do at the appropriate time.

“True to his threats, Fubara gave instructions and Nigerians saw the outcome when oil pipelines started coming up in flames.

“Now that Fubara’s lawlessness has resulted in the imposition of emergency rule, the same elders who failed to stand and act like real elders are sobbing like children whose most priced toys have been taken away. It is funny and unfortunate.

“They have even turned themselves to monitoring spirits, monitoring when Wike comes to Rivers State and when he leaves as if it has now become illegal for a Minister to visit his home state and associate freely with the people.”While telling Ada George and his Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum to blame themselves for taking side when they should be neutral, Olayinka said; “the moment an elder takes side in a conflict between two children, such an elder has lost the rights to intervene and ressolve the conflict.”

  • 2025 UTME: JAMB deploys decoy website to tackle malpractices

2025 UTME: JAMB deploys decoy website to tackle malpractices

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has deployed a decoy website to tackle malpractices in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, disclosed this on Thursday, while monitoring UTME Mock at some Computer Based Test, CBT centres in Abuja.

No fewer than 211,000 candidates participated in the examination that took place cross designated CBT centres in the country.

Oloyedey revealed that the results of the mock examination will be released on Friday.

“They will have the results tomorrow. The results will be ready. Those who finished, we are working now on their results, but we want to compare with the second batch, the third batch, and so on. And see that everything is working well. But later by tomorrow, they will have the results,” he said.

Explaining the purpose of the UTME Mock, Oloyede said the exercise was aimed at testing the board’s readiness for the main examination and experimenting with new strategies to improve the process.

“The word is mock, and we want to say so far so good. What we want to do is to try some things. As students are getting wiser, we are also getting better…..

“Because we are doing certain things to ensure that those things are done. So we are trying to make sure that when we go for the exam, we will have taken experience and taken some lessons from our experience at the Mock level. So, so far, so good,” he said.

The Registrar, who said the only way to pass UTME is by studying hard, expressed concerns that some candidates are patronizing rogue websites in order to cheat in the exam, adding that JAMB has also opened a decoy website targeting such individuals.“We need to let the students know that the best way to pass the examination, UTME in particular, is to study. We are aware of some rogue websites asking people to come and pay that they can help.

“It cannot work. We have also opened our own rogue website. And as of this morning, about 180 students have paid.

“So those students, because to attempt to cheat is already an infraction. So those who paid into that account, looking for questions, we are going to deal firmly with them. And many of the institutions, UTME is not a school-based examination.

“We register students individually. And that is why we tell the students, do not give out your registration number. Do not register by proxy.

“Do not give your registration number to anybody. Because some of these schools want to be able to brag that, oh, my 10 students from my school scored 280. There was a state where even the governor of a state was misinformed, and they were celebrating nothing. So this type of thing that people want to cut corners; we are abreast of all this. And we are doing everything possible (to stop it).

“We have about 180 of them. And we are going to deal with them firmly. We are going to cancel their results, both UTME and DE,” Oloyede said.

He advised candidates to steer clear of fraudulent websites and individuals claiming to offer assistance during the examination.

“Some of them are paying N30,000 for something that will never work. And to some, when I look at those who have paid us this money, I smile,” he added.

Recall that the 2025 UTME is scheduled to commence on April 25 at approved CBT centres across the country.

  • How God’s instruction to keep my dreadlocks saved a life – Jimmy Odukoya

How God’s instruction to keep my dreadlocks saved a life – Jimmy Odukoya

The Senior Pastor of The Fountain of Life Church, Jimmy Odukoya, has revealed that he wears his dreadlocks in obedience to a divine instruction.

In a recent sermon, Pastor Odukoya shared that before officially stepping into his pastoral duties, he sought God’s guidance specifically about his appearance. He was clearly told by God not to cut his hair.

“Before I came back, one of the things I asked the Lord was whether or not I should cut my hair. And the Lord told me not to cut my hair,” he said.

To confirm what he heard, he asked his sister, Tolu Odukoya-Ijogun, to pray about it without telling her what he had received. She returned with the same message.

“I knew what God had said to me so I told my sister to go pray and that God will speak to her. She goes back and told me I wasn’t supposed to cut my hair, to which I replied, ‘I know, because God already told me.’”

Odukoya then recounted a powerful encounter with a woman who had traveled all the way from Zimbabwe just to attend his church. She shared with him a prophetic vision she had back in 2016, which she didn’t understand until years later.

“A couple of weeks ago, someone had come to see me all the way from Zimbabwe just to come to church. I said please bring the lady in and she begins to tell me her story.

She says, ‘People think I’m crazy. I told everybody I am coming to Nigeria for the next three to four weeks. I’m just coming to church.’

She says, ‘It was 2016, I was in New York, it was Thanksgiving and I had a vision, it felt so real. In this vision, I see you with your hair and you’re speaking to me and I have been dealing with some things in my life.

“There was this dog on my shoulder. I knew the dog represented the weight I was carrying and you had this long sword. You began speaking to me and it looked like thunder and lightning was coming out of the sword and it burnt the dog into ashes. And you began to declare over me and gave certain instructions.’”

The woman explained that after the vision, she experienced a series of personal tragedies: a painful breakup, financial loss from a divorce, and the death of her mother. In her search for God, she turned to online sermons—and that’s when she discovered Pastor Odukoya on YouTube.“She said, ‘Fast forward 2025, after that vision I went through a tough break-up, I lost everything in a divorce. My ex took the house.’

She said, ‘Everything I worked for… It was a tough time. To compound issues, my mom got sick and I watched her die in my arms.’

She said she was trying to find God so she went on YouTube to hear sermons. And all of a sudden my preaching popped up.

And she said, ‘You don’t understand, because when I had this vision, I didn’t know you existed. The person I saw, I did not know it was a real person. So when I saw the man from the vision with a long hair I screamed. I didn’t know any pastor would have long hair.’”

Reflecting on her story, Pastor Odukoya pointed out the divine significance of his appearance and how obedience to God’s instruction led to a powerful moment of connection and healing.

“Here’s what’s crazy, in 2016, I didn’t have my hair. The God who sees, hears and knows, knew at some point in February 2025, one of His children will have to see a man preaching.

Guess what? If He did not ask me to keep my hair, I would have cut it.

And when I popped up on the screen, she would have seen me with no hair and it would have meant nothing.

God was making me keep my hair to save a life.”

  • Trump’s new tariffs take effect, with 104% on Chinese goods

Trump’s new tariffs take effect, with 104% on Chinese goods

US President Donald Trump’s punishing tariffs on dozens of economies came into force Wednesday, including over 100 percent in levies against Chinese goods, sending markets into a tailspin again as the devastating global trade war intensified.

Following the sweeping 10 percent tariffs that took effect over the weekend, rates on imports to the United States from exporters like the European Union or Japan rose further at 12.01 am (0401 GMT) Wednesday.

China — Washington’s top economic rival but also a major trading partner — is the hardest hit, with tariffs imposed on its products since Trump returned to the White House now reaching a staggering 104 percent.

Trump said Tuesday his government was working on “tailored deals” with trading partners, with the White House saying it would prioritize allies like Japan and South Korea.

His top trade official Jamieson Greer also told the Senate that Argentina, Vietnam and Israel were among those who had offered to reduce their tariffs.

Trump told a dinner with fellow Republicans on Tuesday night that countries were “dying” to make a deal.

“I’m telling you, these countries are calling us up kissing my ass,” he said.

But Beijing has shown no signs of standing down, vowing to fight a trade war “to the end” and promising countermeasures to defend its interests.

China’s retaliatory tariffs of 34 percent on US goods are due to enter in force at 12:01 am local time on Thursday (1601 GMT Wednesday).

The US president believes his policy will revive America’s lost manufacturing base by forcing companies to relocate to the United States.

But many business experts and economists question how quickly — if ever — this can take place, warning of higher inflation as the tariffs raise prices.

Trump said Tuesday the United States was “taking in almost $2 billion a day” from tariffs.

    – China ‘wants to make a deal’ –

He originally unveiled a 34 percent additional tariff on Chinese goods.

But after China countered with its own tariff of the same amount on American products, Trump piled on another 50 percent duty.

Counting existing levies imposed in February and March, that takes the cumulative tariff increase for Chinese goods during Trump’s second presidency to 104 percent.

Trump has insisted the ball was in China’s court, saying Beijing “wants to make a deal, badly, but they don’t know how to get it started.”

Late Tuesday, Trump also said the United States would announce a major tariff on pharmaceuticals “very shortly”.

Separately, Canada said that its tariffs on certain US auto imports will come into force Wednesday.

    – Meltdown –

After trillions in equity value were wiped off global bourses in the last days, markets in Asia came under pressure again on Wednesday, with Hong Kong plunging more than three percent and Japan’s Nikkei sinking 2.7 percent.

The markets accelerated their losses as the new tariffs came into effect, with Taiwan stocks closing down 5.8 percent in the afternoon.

Ahead of European markets’ open, stock futures were also indicating steep drops ahead.

Foreign exchange markets likewise witnessed ructions, with the South Korean won falling to its lowest level against the dollar since 2009 this week.

China’s offshore yuan also fell to an all-time low against the US dollar, as Beijing’s central bank moved to weaken the yuan on Wednesday for what Bloomberg said was the fifth day in a row.

Analyst Stephen Innes said however, that “letting the yuan grind lower at this measured pace won’t offset the blow from a full-blown tariff barrage”.

“The levies are simply too big. China is trying to thread the needle, but the runway is short,” he warned.

Oil prices slumped, with the West Texas Intermediate closing below $60 for the first time since April 2021.

    – Avoid ‘further escalation’ –

The European Union has sought to cool tensions, with the bloc’s chief Ursula von der Leyen warning against worsening the trade conflict in a call with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

She stressed stability for the world’s economy, alongside “the need to avoid further escalation,” said an EU readout.

The Chinese premier told von der Leyen that his country could weather the storm, saying it “is fully confident of maintaining sustained and healthy economic development.”

The EU — which Trump has criticized bitterly over its tariff regime — may unveil its response next week to new 20 percent levies it faces.

In retaliation against US steel and aluminum levies that took effect last month, the EU plans tariffs of up to 25 percent on American goods ranging from soybeans to motorcycles, according to a document seen by AFP.

In one public sign of friction over tariffs, key Trump ally Elon Musk described senior White House trade advisor Peter Navarro as “dumber than a sack of bricks.”

Musk, who has signaled his opposition to Trump’s trade policy, hit out after Navarro described his Tesla company as “a car assembler” that wants cheap foreign parts.
