Real Madrid ‘yet to show their best’, warns Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti said Real Madrid “are improving but are yet to show their best” as his side bid to earn automatic qualification to the Champions League last 16 against Ligue 1 club Brest on Wednesday.

The reigning champions of Europe are ensured of their place in at least the knockout play-off round as the league phase of the revamped Champions League wraps up with its final matchday this week.

However, after suffering three defeats in their opening seven matches, 16th-placed Real are only in with an outside chance of securing a top eight finish and automatic progression to the last 16.

A faltering start to the defence of their Spanish and Champions League titles now seems to be behind Ancelotti’s charges after they have won nine of their last 10 outings in all competitions.

“I think the team are improving but are yet to show their best, even though we’re getting close,” Ancelotti said during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“The idea and the vision that we have for this team, I think it’s clear to everyone and the team have improved collectively, but also individually.

“That’s the case for Kylian Mbappe, but also for Rodrygo (Goes) or (Jude) Bellingham and all the other players. They’ve all worked very hard.

“Kylian is playing very well. I think he just needed a little time to improve athletically and adapt to his new environment… Now we’re taking full advantage of having Mbappe with us and the qualities he can bring to the team.”

Criticised for his performances at the start of the season following his long-awaited transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, France captain Mbappe has got among the goals as Madrid surged to the top of La Liga over the winter.

The 26-year-old has 21 goals in 31 matches for Real, eight of which have come in January.

Los Blancos sit only one point outside of the top eight but seven teams are currently between them and eighth-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

One of these sides are Wednesday’s opposition Brest, who have impressed on their European debut, with four wins from seven so far.

“Brest have done an excellent job in this Champions League,” said Ancelotti.

“They have a point more than us… It’s no coincidence that they took 13 points in the first phase.

“They are a very good team who know how to take advantage of the qualities of their players,” added the veteran Italian.

    – ‘Don’t stand a chance’ –

Brest are also assured of progression to the knock-outs, something their coach described as “difficult to imagine” when the Breton outfit got their campaign underway with a 2-1 win over Sturm Graz in neighbouring Guingamp as their own stadium is not up to UEFA requirements.

“If someone had told us… that Real Madrid would be behind us (now), we would have believed that even less,” added Brest coach Eric Roy during his press conference on Tuesday.

“We got off to a good start in the competition, while Real were perhaps in a period where they were a little less good.

“We saw them lose in Lille (1-0), we saw them lose at home to AC Milan (3-1).

“We managed to over-perform, they may have under-performed, and that’s certainly why today we have a

    point more than them.”

The Frenchman promised his side would look to be proactive against their fancied opponents.

“We’ll have to play, but when I say play, I mean really play, in other words be capable of causing problems for our opponents,” said Roy.

“The fantastic thing about football is that it’s still the sport where the favourite doesn’t always win.

“It’s obvious that if you look at the stats, if you look at the budget, if you look at the fixture list, if you look at the squad, you can tell yourself that you don’t stand a chance.

“But in football, you can be inferior and still win games. It doesn’t happen often, but it can happen.”

  • Al Hilal, Neymar reach agreement to end contract

Al Hilal, Neymar reach agreement to end contract

Brazilian star Neymar on Monday ended his injury-plagued 18 month stay in Saudi Arabia as his club, Al-Hilal said they had “agreed to terminate the player’s contract by mutual consent”.

“The club expresses its thanks and appreciation to Neymar for what he has provided throughout his career with Al-Hilal, and wish the player success in his career,” said a club statement posted on social media.

The 32-year-old former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward played just seven times since joining the club in August 2023, despite a reported salary of around $104 million a year.

Neymar, the subject of what is still the biggest transfer in football history when he joined Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona in 2017 for a fee of 220 million euros ($230 million at), joined Al-Hilal in August 2023.

He followed fellow superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema to the lucrative Saudi league.

But two months after his arrival in Riyadh, he ruptured a cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for Brazil in a World Cup qualifier in October 2023, which kept him on the sidelines for a year.

He returned for Al Hilal with two brief appearances in October and November but injured a hamstring and has not played since. He said he is targeting the World Cup.

The club’s coach Jorge Jesus said recently: “He can no longer play at the level we are used to. Things have become difficult for him, unfortunately.”

Earlier in January, Neymar said he was aiming to play in the 2026 in the US, Canada and Mexico.

    – ‘Last shot’ –

“I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance and I will do everything I can to play in it,” he told CNN.

While Neymar had been curted by MLS teams in the United States, reports in Brazil said Santos, the club where Neymar made his name in his now fading career, was in talks for him to return to his homeland.

A return to Brazil would likely be the last chance for a player who is his country’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals in 127 matches.

At the start of his career he was cast as the heir to Pele.

After scoring 107 goals in 177 appearances for Santos, he joined Barcelona in 2013, becoming the young star of a team that also featured Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, which swept to the Champions League title in 2015 by beating Juventus 3-1 in the final in Berlin.

A year later he scored the winning penalty in a shootout as Brazil won the men’s football gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

transfer fee of 220 million euros ($230 million).

He won five Ligue 1 titles and he and prolific French forward Kylian Mbappe led PSG to the final of the Champions League in the Covid-blighted 2019-2020, but they lost to Bayern Munich.

PSG reunited Neymar with Messi in the French capital, but the trio with Mbappe failed to gel as personal rivalries got in the way and he was pushed to the exit, and to Saudi Arabia, by the Parisian management in 2023.

15 years after, fans still harass me over 2010 World Cup miss – Aiyegbeni

Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has opened up that even 15 years after his infamous miss at the 2010 World Cup against Korea, Nigerian fans still bombard him for not putting away that sitter.

The miss was such that he was faced with an empty net with both goalkeeper and defender beaten inside the six-yard box, and that eliminated Nigeria from the 2010 World Cup.

“I still get messages from people, different people on that miss,” ‘The Yak’ said on a podcast. “One asked how will I explain this miss to my daughter Kayla. “I was like wow, 13, 14 years ago people still think about that.

“I got another  message again  that said I  was the worst Super Eagles striker.” ‘The Yak’ said this hurts because the fans do not remember that he scored twice in Sudan for Nigeria to qualify for the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan.

“We went to Sudan when nobody thought we would qualify for the World Cup because the weather there was crazy, the weather was so hot,” he recalled. “A draw or a loss and we are out.

“I scored two, Julius Aghahowa and ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha also scored for us to win 4-0 and that got us the ticket to the World Cup. “But Nigerians never speak about that and that I played 99.9% of these games to qualify Nigeria to the World Cup and I was still dropped (from going to the World Cup).”

  • Chukwueze scores late-winner to give AC Milan stunning win over Parma

Chukwueze scores late-winner to give AC Milan stunning win over Parma

AC Milan turned jeers to cheers on Sunday as two goals in stoppage time gave the seven-time European champions a stunning 3-2 win over Parma in Serie A.

Trailing to what looked like being Enrico Delprato’s winner for Parma heading into added time, Milan triumphed thanks to strikes from Tijjani Reijnders and Samuel Chukwueze, sending previously frustrated fans delirious with joy.

AC Milan move up to sixth, five points behind Lazio who sit fourth and host off-form Fiorentina in Sunday’s late match.

Nigeria forward Chukwueze’s bundled finish completely changed the atmosphere around the San Siro and gave Sergio Conceicao’s team a huge boost ahead of a massive week.

Milan travel to Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday gunning for direct qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League before their local derby with Inter Milan next weekend.

“I think we showed the right mentality, fighting to the end and the way we changed this game is crazy,” said Netherlands midfielder Reijnders after his 11th goal of the season.

“This game was important for us to get back where we belong. Now we have to continue.”

Fan discontent had threatened to bubble over in the 80th minute when Delprato forced home on the rebound after Mike Maignan did brilliantly to keep out Drissa Camara.

Supporters turned towards the directors’ box and ironically applauded Milan’s management, after Milan’s hardcore ultras watched the majority of the match in silence, only raising their voices to again demand that American owners RedBird sell the club.

The loudest cheers heard from home fans before Reijnders’ 91st-minute equaliser, slotted home from Yunus Musah’s fine through ball, came moments before when Strahinja Pavlovic headed in what he thought was the leveller before it was rightly ruled out for offside.

Unfortunate Parma were left with nothing from an excellent performance which deserved more but meant Fabio Pecchia’s team stay a point above the relegation zone.

“When you play like that at the San Siro and you leave with a defeat there’s going to be disappointment but there’s also awareness of what we did because I saw a lot of good stuff today,” said Pecchia.

“A performance like that can only serve us well for the future.”

Inter are at Lecce on Sunday evening hoping to halve the six-point gap separating the champions from league leaders Napoli, with Roma at fellow mid-table outfit Udinese.

  • PSG loan France forward Kolo Muani to Juventus

Juventus signed Randal Kolo Muani on loan from Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday as the France forward seeks playing time away from the French capital.

The two clubs released statements to confirm the deal, which will see Kolo Muani stay in Turin until June 30.

The transfer had been held up because PSG had already filled their quota of players who could be loaned out to foreign clubs at the same time.

However, the confirmation of Kolo Muani’s loan deal being completed follows reports in France on Wednesday that PSG’s Spanish defender Juan Bernat had rescinded his contract with the club and turned a loan move to Villarreal into a permanent transfer.

Kolo Muani, 26, has remained a regular for the French national team despite starting just twice for PSG in the first half of the season.

He has scored just two goals for the French champions since the campaign began, and has played just 78 minutes since the start of November.

Kolo Muani joined from Eintracht Frankfurt in a reported 90 million-euro ($93.7m) transfer at the start of last season and netted nine goals in 40 appearances in his first campaign in Paris.

His move to Turin will boost Juve’s forward line which has been hit with injuries.

Thiago Motta’s team have had to play without a recognised striker in recent fixtures, and were toothless in a 0-0 draw against Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Juve are currently fifth in Serie A and travel to leaders Napoli on Saturday.

Kolo Muani will be welcomed into the fold at Juve by fellow Frenchmen Pierre Kalulu and Khephren Thuram, the latter the son of World Cup and European Championship winner Lilian who won two league titles at Juve.

  • Man City sign forward Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt

Man City sign forward Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt

Manchester City on Thursday announced the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush for a reported initial fee of around £59 million ($72.6 million).

The 25-year-old, whose contract is understood to include a potential further £4.2 million in add-ons, has signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Premier League champions.

Marmoush is City’s third signing of the January transfer window following the arrivals of defenders Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

“This is a day I will never forget. To sign for Manchester City — one of the best teams in the world — is an amazing feeling,” he said.

“I am delighted, my family are so proud, and we are all very happy to be here in Manchester.”

Director of football Txiki Begiristain said Marmoush was an “accomplished and exciting forward”.

“He’s had an outstanding season, and every time we have watched him, he has influenced matches,” he said.

“He has all the attributes a top-class attacker requires. He has outstanding pace and awareness, and he is exceptional in front of goal. He can also play a number of different positions, which is a really valuable asset.”

His arrival at the Etihad Stadium comes during a frustrating season for City.

City, champions for the past four seasons, are currently fifth in the Premier League, 12 points behind leaders Liverpool having played a game more.

Defeat at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday has also left Pep Guardiola’s side in danger of missing out on the Champions League knockout stages.

  • Europa: Fernandes’ late strike hands Man United dramatic victory over Rangers

Europa: Fernandes’ late strike hands Man United dramatic victory over Rangers

Man United closed in on a direct passage to the Europa League last 16 thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ late winner to beat Rangers 2-1 in Thursday’s Battle of Britain.

The Red Devils looked set to suffer more disappointment at Old Trafford when Cyriel Dessers levelled for an injury-ravaged Rangers in the 88th minute.

But Fernandes spared United’s blushes and possibly the playoff round by blasting home in stoppage time.

United move up to fourth in the table with one match of the league phase remaining.

The top eight will qualify directly for the last 16, which may now be beyond Rangers, who slip to 13th.

However, the Glasgow giants did themselves proud in the circumstances as Philippe Clement had to turn to two teenagers off the bench in the second half as his injury problems mounted.

Ruben Amorim had blasted United’s current crop as the worst in the club’s history after a bruising 3-1 defeat to Brighton at the weekend.

That was a fourth defeat in five home games and United’s nervousness in front of an expectant crowd was clear to see in the early stages.

Rangers were left to rue not making more of the first big chance of the match when Altay Bayindir denied Nico Raskin and Ridvan Yilmaz chipped the rebound over.

Alejandro Garnacho has been linked with a move away in the closing weeks of the transfer window as United look to ease their issues with meeting profit and sustainability rules.

The Argentine is attracting interest from Napoli and Chelsea and should have signed off with at least one goal if it is to be his final appearance for the club.

Garnacho’s goalbound effort was deflected over by Raskin before United had the ball in the net from the resulting corner.

Matthijs de Ligt’s towering header was controversially ruled out for a foul on Robin Propper and VAR did not intervene.

Amad Diallo has been the shining light in troubled times in Amorim’s early months and was keen to make an impression against his former club, where he spent an unfruitful loan spell during the 2021/22 season.

Diallo was largely kept quiet, although Jack Butland had to block a low shot after a neat one-two with Bruno Fernandes.

Already shorn of John Souttar, Neraysho Kasanwirjo, Ianis Hagi, Danilo and Oscar Cortes, Rangers had to cope with three more injuries as Leon Balogun and Connor Barron did not appear for the second half and Vaclav Cerny limped off on the hour mark.

Clement had to throw on two 18-year-olds with barely any first team experience in Bailey Rice and Findlay Curtis.

Yet, they were ultimately only beaten by a huge error from one of their most experienced players.

Butland did not play for United during a spell with the Red Devils in 2023.

The former England international endured a nightmare return as he punched Diallo’s corner into his own net to break the deadlock.

United failed to press home the advantage as Garnacho fired a glorious chance off the post from close range.

And they could have been punished as Dessers smashed home after Harry Maguire got caught underneath a long ball.

Not for the first time this season, Fernandes rode to United’s rescue with the one moment of quality in a scrappy game when he cushioned Lisandro Martinez’s cross through Butland’s legs.

Rangers are still set to at least make the playoff round and have an outside chance at making the top eight if they beat Union Saint-Gilloise at Ibrox next week.

United travel to Romanian side FCSB with a point likely enough to secure place in the last 16.

  • Borussia Dortmund sack coach Nuri Sahin after Champions League setback

Borussia Dortmund sack coach Nuri Sahin after Champions League setback

Borussia Dortmund have fired struggling head coach Nuri Sahin after Tuesday’s 2-1 Champions League loss at Bologna, saying on Wednesday they had “lost faith” in the young manager.

Dortmund were beaten finalists in the competition last season, but the loss on Tuesday was the club’s fourth in a row in all competitions.

In the Bundesliga, Dortmund sit 10th, 20 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Sahin was assistant to former Dortmund coach Edin Terzic in last season’s surprise run to the Champions League final where they lost to Real Madrid and was promoted to head coach in the summer.

“We have unfortunately lost faith that we will achieve our sporting goals,” sporting CEO Lars Ricken said of the current management.

Ricken said the decision “hurts… but was unavoidable after the game in Bologna.

“We value Nuri Sahin and his work very much, we hoped for a long collaboration and until the end we had hope that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together.”

Dortmund, who host Werder Bremen in the league on Saturday, as yet have not nominated a successor for the coach.

German media reported potential successors included former Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag, who has been seen watching Dortmund games recently, or one-time Benfica and Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt.

A disappointed Sahin said he “unfortunately was not able to live up to Dortmund’s sporting ambitions at this point in time.

“I wish this special club all the best.”

After Tuesday’s loss, Sahin told reporters “if I am the problem, or if a change of coach solves the issues, then that’s no problem at all.”

Under Sahin this season, Dortmund have found it particularly tough away from their 82,000-capacity Westfalenstadion fortress, having lost nine and won just four of their 15 away matches.

Sahin’s side were also eliminated in the last 32 of the German Cup by Wolfsburg.

  • PSG sink Man City with stunning Champions League comeback

PSG sink Man City with stunning Champions League comeback

Paris Saint-Germain produced a stunning second-half fightback as they recovered from two goals down to beat Manchester City 4-2 in a Champions League thriller on Wednesday.

The result leaves Pep Guardiola’s side still at risk of an early exit.

All the goals came in the second half on a wet night at the Parc des Princes, with Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland scoring to put City firmly in control.

However, Ousmane Dembele pulled one back and Bradley Barcola brought PSG level by the hour mark, before Joao Neves headed the French champions in front and Goncalo Ramos wrapped up the win at the death after a long VAR check.

Both of these powerful clubs came into their penultimate game in the league phase in Paris in trouble, with 24th-placed City occupying the last qualifying spot in the 36-team standings on eight points, and PSG one point behind them in 26th.

Both of these powerful clubs came into their penultimate game in the league phase in Paris in trouble, with 24th-placed City occupying the last qualifying spot in the 36-team standings on eight points, and PSG one point behind them in 26th.

City knew a win here would probably guarantee them a spot in next month’s play-offs while landing a damaging blow to PSG, semi-finalists last season.

Instead it is PSG who move to 10 points, a tally which may now be enough to progress, while Guardiola’s team drop out of the qualifying spots with just one game to come.

However, a win at home to Club Brugge next Wednesday should suffice as it would take them above the Belgian side in the standings.

This match saw City coach Guardiola, who led his side to Champions League glory in 2023, pit his wits against PSG’s Luis Enrique, his close friend and former team-mate at Barcelona.
