Anambra is a Christian state: Odinani practitioners fire back at Soludo

Indigenous Spirituality Practitioners in Anambra State (Ndi Odinani) have criticized Governor Chukwuma Soludo over his recent statement referring to them as idol worshippers.

They described the governor’s remarks as a cultural misstep and a fallacious generalization.

The group argued that the statement unfairly portrayed the entire community of indigenous spirituality practitioners as criminals. While they supported efforts to combat criminality under any guise, they condemned singling out one belief system without applying the same scrutiny to others as an act of prejudice and injustice.

In an open letter to Governor Soludo, shared with newsmen via WhatsApp, the group emphasized the need for equity and justice. The letter, signed by Izuorah Nnamdi, Director of Lomat Global Resources Limited, was titled:

“Open Letter to His Excellency, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo (CFR), Governor of Anambra State, on Upholding the Constitutional Rights of Indigenous Spirituality Practitioners in Anambra State.”

The letter reads in part: “Your assertion that Anambra is a ‘Christian state’ demands careful reconsideration. Such a declaration is historically, culturally, and constitutionally erroneous. Christianity, as an organized religion, was introduced to our land by missionaries in 1857, a mere 168 years ago during the colonial era. Before this period, our ancestors thrived under a robust indigenous belief system — Odinani — which shaped their worldview, governance, and ethical structure.”

The letter further argued: “Anambra belongs, first and foremost, to its indigenous people, whose identity, spirituality, and customs are rooted in ancestral heritage. While Christianity is now widespread due to historical and colonial influences, it is an adopted faith, not the indigenous spirituality of the land. Designating Anambra as a ‘Christian state’ erases the legitimate cultural identity and spiritual sovereignty of its people.”

The group also pointed out that the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria guarantees freedom of religion and prohibits the elevation of one religion above others. Section 38 of the Constitution guarantees the right to thought, conscience, and religion, including the freedom to practice and propagate one’s beliefs.

They called on the governor to ensure inclusivity and neutrality in his leadership, stating: “Your role as governor, entrusted with upholding the constitution, necessitates a stance of neutrality and inclusivity, ensuring that adherents of Odinani, Christianity, Islam, and other faiths are equally respected and protected under the law.”

The practitioners also addressed the issue of traditional sacrifices at road junctions and water bodies, which the governor had criticized. They explained that such practices are deeply rooted in Igbo cosmology and serve specific spiritual and communal purposes. They proposed constructive dialogue with traditional custodians to find a harmonious approach, such as designating areas for cultural observances without compromising public order.

Concluding the letter, the group urged Governor Soludo to embrace inclusivity: “The strength of any democracy lies in its commitment to justice, fairness, and respect for diversity. You are a beacon of intellectual leadership and innovation. We urge you to rise above religious bias, embrace your role as a father to all Ndi Anambra, and lead with a renewed commitment to cultural inclusivity and constitutional fidelity.”

  • Babangida to launch memoir, host fundraising for presidential library

Babangida to launch memoir, host fundraising for presidential library

Former military president Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) is set to launch his long-awaited autobiography.

The memoir, ‘A Journey in Service,’ will be released on February 20 at an event at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, marking 32 years since IBB left office.

In an invitation sent to dignitaries this week, the Board of Trustees of the IBB Presidential Library Foundation announced that the book launch will be held alongside a fundraiser for a presidential library.

The organisers said the event would be chaired by a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, with President Bola Tinubu as the special guest of honour.

The keynote address will be delivered by the former President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, while the autobiography will be reviewed by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Other notable guests expected to attend include former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari, Yakubu Gowon, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Goodluck Jonathan.

Former Minister of Defence Theophilus Danjuma and BUA Group Chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu have been named as chief launchers.

    ‘A U-turn’

This decision marks a significant shift from eight years ago when Babangida expressed doubts about Nigerians finding his book inspiring. In an interview with Channels Television, he cited misconceptions about his leadership, including the June 12 crisis and policies implemented during his tenure from 1985 to 1993.

He said, “People may not read it (the autobiography) because it is coming from a dictator. A lot will say dictator, he cancelled June 12 and that will kill the book.

“If God spares my life, I will discuss about June 12 election because I still believe people don’t get what we were trying to put across. Nobody has ever sat down to say the two persons involved are friends, what went wrong? We tried to rationalise why we had to do what we did but nobody is prepared to listen to us.

Trump to world business leaders: Make your products in America or pay tariffs

US President Donald Trump told world business leaders Thursday to manufacture in the United States or face tariffs, in his first major speech to global leaders since returning to the White House this week.

Since his inauguration on Monday, Trump has said that Washington could impose steep tariffs on major trading partners Canada, Mexico and China as soon as February 1.

He has also signed a flurry of executive orders, pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Accords and the World Health Organisation.

“Come make your product in America and we will give you among the lowest taxes of any nation on earth,” Trump said on Thursday, speaking remotely to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“But if you don’t make your product in America, which is your prerogative, then very simply you will have to pay a tariff,” he added.

In his speech, he added that he believed lower oil prices would help end war in Ukraine instantly.

“I’m also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to bring down the cost of oil,” referring to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

“If the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately,” he said.

“Right now, the price is high enough that that war will continue,” he added.

Nigerian female Engineer receives Biden’s presidential Lifetime Achievement Award

Nigerians in the diaspora have continued to make their country proud, with a US-based Nigerian engineer, Mrs Stella Okengwu, being honoured with the esteemed Biden Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition for her outstanding contributions to the field of engineering.

She was among four individuals honoured by the former US President, alongside Michael Flynn, Dr Alveda Thomas, and Catalina Stube.

Notably, this award comes at a critical time when Engr. Okengwu’s efforts to champion a $250 million investment into the Nigerian economy by Nigerians in the diaspora are facing challenges in her homeland.

As a key figure in promoting the repatriation of hundreds of millions of dollars back into Nigeria through the Winhomes Global Estate scheme, Engr. Okengwu’s work was said to be instrumental in supporting the Nigerian economy. However, the scheme is currently under threat due to the diversion of the Lagos-Calabar Highway construction in Okun Ajah, Lagos, by officials of the Federal Ministry of Works.

In response, Nigerians in the diaspora have filed a lawsuit challenging the diversion, citing the need for adherence to due diligence. They also accused the Federal Ministry of Works of disregarding the 2006 Gazetted Alignment, lamenting that lawbreakers who built on the earmarked section of the road were favoured.

Despite these challenges, Engr. Okengwu, in her acceptance speech for the award, reiterated her commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. She also called on the President to intervene in the diversion of the Lagos-Calabar Highway, emphasizing that his support would encourage other Nigerian diasporans to invest in the country.

  • ‘Emilia Perez’ tops Oscar nominations in fire-hit Hollywood

‘Emilia Perez’ tops Oscar nominations in fire-hit Hollywood

Transgender cartel musical “Emilia Perez” topped this year’s Oscar nominations, earning 13 nods in an announcement on Thursday postponed by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.

French director Jacques Audiard’s Mexico-set movie, released by Netflix, shattered the record for the most Academy Award nominations for a non-English-language film.

It was followed by epic immigrant saga “The Brutalist,” and show-stopping Broadway adaptation “Wicked,” which each picked up 10 nominations.

Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” and Vatican thriller “Conclave” bagged eight nods apiece.

Voting deadlines had to be extended this month, as Los Angeles — the US entertainment capital and home city of the Academy Awards — was devastated by multiple blazes that have killed more than two dozen people and forced tens of thousands to flee.

Nominees were unveiled in subdued circumstances, as a town that typically fixates on the Oscars race was instead fixated on yet more new fires burning north of the city.

Even so, the glitzy Oscars ceremony is still set for March 2, capping months and millions of dollars of campaigning for golden statuettes.

“Emilia Perez,” in which a narco boss transitions to life as a woman and turns her back on crime, picked up nods for best picture, best director, best adapted screenplay and best international film, as well as multiple song, score and sound nods.

Audiard told AFP on Thursday that he was “extremely thrilled” by the sweeping recognition.

The movie’s star Karla Sofia Gascon became the first openly trans acting nominee in best actress, and Zoe Saldana was nominated for best supporting actress.

Their more famous co-star, Selena Gomez, who has been criticized for her Spanish-language dialogue, missed out.

Nevertheless, the film easily surpassed the record for the most nominations for a non-English-language movie — previously held by “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Roma,” each with 10.

“I wonder if it’s becoming a trend — a desire to make films with different linguistic elements, unique actors, and distinctive themes,” said Audiard.

    – ‘The Apprentice’ –

For best actor, firm favorite Adrien Brody was nominated for “The Brutalist” along with Timothee Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”) and Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”).

But in an unexpected pick sure to ruffle a few feathers in the new White House, the fifth and final spot went to Sebastian Stan, for his unsettling transformation into a young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice.”

The movie has drawn threats of lawsuits from the US president’s attorneys, particularly for a scene in which the then-property developer is shown raping his first wife, Ivana.

In real life, Ivana accused Trump of raping her during divorce proceedings, but later rescinded the allegation. She died in 2022.

Jeremy Strong, who plays the youthful Trump’s sinister mentor Roy Cohn, was also nominated for his supporting role, edging out the likes of Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II”).

Meanwhile, in an intense race for best actress, A-listers Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman — who went all-out with their performances in “Maria” and “Babygirl,” respectively — missed the cut.

Instead, comeback queen Demi Moore, who charmed the industry with her Golden Globes acceptance speech for satirical body-horror “The Substance,” was nominated and is seen as the favorite.

Her rivals include Gascon, “Anora” star Mikey Madison, and Brazil’s Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here.”

“Wicked” lead Cynthia Erivo was also nominated for best actress, alongside her co-star and pop music sensation Ariana Grande, in the supporting category.

    – ‘Hope’ –

Audiard was joined in the best director running by fellow French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat for “The Substance.”

The only woman nominated in her category, Fargeat told AFP it would give other female filmmakers “confidence” and “hope.”

“The most touching messages that I’ve received are from young women directors. It gives confidence, strength and role models,” she said.

The Los Angeles wildfires have cast a somber shadow on this year’s Oscars.

“This has certainly been a difficult time for Los Angeles, where many members of our film community industry work and live,” said Academy present Janet Yang at the start of Thursday’s announcement.

The Oscars gala in March will “pay tribute to our brave first responders,” added Academy CEO Bill Kramer.

The chaos and displacement caused by the California fires could have prevented many Academy members there from voting, Pete Hammond, awards columnist for movie trade outlet Deadline, told AFP.

He predicted the upheaval could have increased the influence of the Academy’s many overseas voters — who often opt for more artsy fare from outside of the US-centric Hollywood orbit.

And it was indeed a strong morning for international films.

Beyond “Emilia Perez” and “The Substance,” there was an unexpected best picture nod for “I’m Still Here,” set during Brazil’s 1970s dictatorship.

Tinubu approves N50b to provide water for Abuja’s satellite towns

ABUJA: President Bola Tinubu has approved N50 billion for the provision of potable water to Abuja’s satellite towns.

  • Edo: PDP calls 10 witnesses against Okpebholo

Edo: PDP calls 10 witnesses against Okpebholo

BENIN CITY – THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate in the September 21 governorship election, Asue Ighodalo on Thursday called four additional witnesses to bring to ten the total witnesses they have called to continue their attempts to prove their allegation of irregularities in the election.

This number is the largest the party and the candidate have presented since the case started.

Recall that the PDP and its candidate in the election are challenging the INEC’s declaration of Governor Monday Okpebholo, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner.

The four witnesses challenged the outcome of the result in some polling units in Esan North East, Oredo, Esan South East and Esan Central Local Government Areas in the state

Giving his testimony at the resumed hearing of the Petition marked EPT/ED/GOV/02/2024, the petitioners’ witness and PDP Esan North East Local Government Area Collation Agent, Mr. Igbarase Matthias, prayed the tribunal to admit his statement on oath which he deposed to on October 11, 2024, in support of the petitioners’ case

He claimed in his statement that there was overvoting in nine polling units relating to exhibits PCB 40- PCB 48 of Form EC25B series in his Local Government Area.

Matthias told the court that in arriving at his statement on oath, he relied on certified true copies of INEC’s Voters Register, Forms EC25B’s, EC8A’s, INEC election manual booklet, screenshots of IREV copies of Form EC8A, BIVAS accreditation Report and BiVAS Extract being CTC’s of Form EC8C, after personally examined them

He tendered IREV-certified true copies of results sheets obtained from INEC and duplicate Copies of Polling Unit Results Sheets of Form EC8A given by INEC to polling unit agents and his party agent card as documentary evidence.

Upon cross-examination by lead counsel to the 1st Respondent (INEC), Kanu Agabi, the witness said he made his deposition on October 11, 2024, while the screenshots of INEC’s BIVAS Report he relied on his statement were certified by INEC on January 8, 2025.

He admitted that PDP Unit and Ward Agents signed the election result sheets, adding that he did not function as a unit agent or Ward agent for his party in the election.

On his part, the PDP agent for Oredo Local Government Area, Aigbe Ighodaro Lucky, told the court that there was overvoting in 66 polling units in the local government area and incorrect scores were entered by INEC for his party in favour of the APC during the election.

He said he relied on INEC documents to arrive at his statement on Oath and adopted the same as evidence in the petition.

Ighodaro also told the Tribunal that there was no prior recording of serial numbers of sensitive materials deployed for the election locally in INEC’s form EC25B.

When cross-examined by counsel to the respondents, the witness claimed to have relied on INEC documents made available to him in the formation of his deposition, despite never participating in the signing of the documents except Form EC25C

“My Lord, I did not examine any BiVAS Machine used for the election all through the process during my work as PDP Local Government Area Collation Agent in Oredo. But I examined the documents given to me by my party”, the witness submitted.

For Adekunle Oboh, PDP Local Government Area Collation Agent in Esan Central, there were irregularities in 23 polling units in the area during the election.

He specifically told the court in his testimonies that there was no prior recording of serial numbers of sensitive materials deployed to the polling units in the area in Form EC25B.

Oboh said the polling unit results sheets were signed by his party agents up to the ward level before he signed Form EC8C.

According to Wilson Ibhawa, the petitioners’ Esan South East Local Government Area Collation Agent, there was no prior recording of serial numbers and sensitive materials used in the election in Form EC25B in five polling units in his area.

Justice Wilfred Kpochi, Chairman of the Tribunal, however, admitted the documents in evidence provisionally, pending the arguments of the respondent’s counsel.

He, therefore adjourned sitting to Friday, January 24, 2025 for the continuation of the hearing.

  • Corruption allegations against ex-Gov Udom Emmanuel, baseless – Aide

Corruption allegations against ex-Gov Udom Emmanuel, baseless – Aide

The Media Assistant to Mr Udom Emmanuel, the immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State, Barr Steven Abia has described allegations of corruption levelled against his boss by a group Network Against Corruption and Trafficking, NACAT, as malicious and baseless.

Abia who was fielding questions from newsmen on Thursday regarding the issue, described NACAT as a faceless group that resorts to blackmail to extort money from politicians and therefore appealed to Akwa Ibom residents to disregard the accusations against Udom Emmanuel.

His words, “The immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State has been maliciously accused, so we are here to tell you that those allegations against my boss are unfounded. So I implore you, Akwa Ibom people to disregard, what they are saying. Those allegations are not true. The people saying those things don’t even have the facts.

“They are faceless people from nowhere trying to dent his reputation. We have never heard of that name. You will agree with me that this NACAT never existed before now, so you can’t even trace them. The name just came up to dent this man. And some people blackmail politicians to make money. We know some people benefit from doing this kind of thing.

“My boss did his work very well. Throughout his time he touched every area in Akwa Ibom State. There’s no place that we did not have projects executed. The documents are here before you. The facts are here and we have loads of them. And that endeared him to the people. Our people love him.”

Abia who brought out some of the documents containing all the projects approved and executed under the last administration described former governor Emmanuel asan accountable, sincere and straightforward political leader.

” This is a man who keeps records meticulously. And then the papers as you have seen, every single project executed throughout his tenure, from day one to the last day, the records are there, and they are excellently kept.
. So my boss is unperturbed. He worked with an audit firm so he knows his left from his right.

“The man is unruffled. There’s no cause for alarm.
And I want to tell you that we have not received any petition, notice or letter from any of the anti-graft agencies. All we are reacting to is what you have also seen on social media. That’s all..And we are expecting that the ICPC and the EFCC go ahead and do their work fairly”

Recall that NACAT had petitioned both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC ) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Crimes Commission (ICPC) against the immediate past Akwa Ibom State governor, Emmanuel Udom, urging that the eight-year tenure of the former governor be thoroughly investigated.

The group had alleged that based on its investigation, the sum of N700 billion remained unaccounted for during Udom Emmanuel’s 8 years tenure

In the petition dated January 21, 2025, signed by its operational manager, Stanley Ugabe and addressed to the chairmen of the two anti-graft agencies respectively, NACAT alleged that there was “wanton corruption and embezzlement of public funds orchestrated by former governor Udom Emmanuel”.

  • Japa: Only 6,000 medical consultants remain in Nigeria – MDCAN

Japa: Only 6,000 medical consultants remain in Nigeria – MDCAN

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) says only 6,000 consultants are left in the country.

Its President, Prof. Muhammad Mohammad, said this on Thursday during the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting in Ilorin.

The meeting was themed, “Policy Making for Quality Healthcare Services: Engaging Policy Makers for Quality Healthcare Delivery”.

Mohammad explained that 6,000 consultants remain as of February 2024, lamenting that data showed that about 1,300 left Nigeria in the last five years.

According to him, the number will continue to dwindle as the retirement age for medical consultants is 60 years.

“About 1,700 consultants are above 55 years of age.

“This means that in the next five years, they are going to leave the services for retirement,” he said.

The MDCAN president emphasised that the number of consultants would continue to reduce, as long as the country produces only one or two per annum.

“So you can see that the replacement cannot keep up with the loss from ‘Japa’ syndrome and from retirement,” he said.

Mohammad commended the government for its efforts toward finding solutions to the challenges.

According to him, the association is hopeful that consultants will be able to serve up to 70 years, while other healthcare workers will continue to serve up to 65 years.

He noted that such a move would ensure that medical and dental consultants who remain in the country continue to give their expertise in the health field.

Mohammad also appealed to the government at all tiers to ensure medical lectures are placed on the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), addressing disparities in their emoluments.

“We also want to have an environment where we will be able to practice and deliver the best quality healthcare in Nigeria,” he said.

Similarly, the Kwara Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam, said the theme of the NEC meeting was apt, noting that appropriate policies were critical to assist the government in delivering quality healthcare to citizens.

  • Two pastors nabbed in Rivers with live cartridges, thousands of pictures, shoes

Two pastors nabbed in Rivers with live cartridges, thousands of pictures, shoes

PORT HARCOURT: Two clerics believed to be fake have been arrested in Rivers by youths and handed over to operatives of the State Police Command.

The suspects Pastors, Umoren Bassey and Elija Aniete, were arrested on January 20, 2025, by the youths of Rumunduru in Oroigwe, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, aged 60 and 51 respectively, are natives of Akwa-Ibom State and were handed over to the police for discreet investigation.

The Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, while parading the suspects at the command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, yesterday,  noted that preliminary investigations have revealed that bizarre items were found in the church premises, including a live cartridge,  sword, two wooden coffins, fake naval passports, and thousands of people’s pictures and passports.

Other items recovered from the church include bottles containing unknown liquids, children’s shoes, calabashes, coconuts, Bibles, police uniforms, and various spiritual items. Notably, there was no python or big casket found among the items, contrary to initial reports.

She said Bassey’s church, God Deliverance Apostolic Church, and Aniete’s Power House of Glory International Church, are both located along Eneka Road in Rumunduru, Obio-Akpor Council of Rivers State.

Iringe-Koko assured the public that more findings would be made available as the investigation progresses.

However, the arrest of the two alleged fake pastors has sparked widespread interest and concern online with many calling for greater scrutiny of religious leaders and their activities.

Speaking, Bassey claimed that he uses spiritual materials for prayer, as directed by God. He alleged that the community planted some of the items found in his church and searched his house without a warrant. Bassey stated that he has been healing people and helping the community for 17 years.

He said: “You can use water and oil to heal people..I have lived there so long.It is a land case.i still have three weeks after court judgement that asked me to quit. They used it to step up me up.The community planted some of the materials they claimed they saw in my church. They searched my house without warrant.

I have been healing people.Helping the community.I have lived there for 17 years.some of the pictures you saw there is that of my Son and some are that of my members.

“I Use the small casket or miracle life  oil to pray for mad persons. The mad person must be calm within three months.I use it to help the community people”

Also,, Aniete, who was arrested alongside Bassey, claimed that he owns a church and was visiting Bassey to discuss maritime-related issues, stating that Bassey is the captain of the Maritime Rescue Coastal Security organization and had been invited to discuss a signal from Lagos.

He said:  “I own a church. What brought me here is that we belong to an organization of Maritime Rescue Coastal Security, Bassey is the captain in the Maritme.

“So he called me, he called me on Sunday that he had signal from lagos that he wants to relate with me. As I was with him that was when the youths came in and arrested me.”

Meanwhile, the Youth President of Rumunduru, Henry Worlu, revealed how the alleged fake pastors were apprehended by youths in the community.

He said: “I was called by the vigilante commanderthay they saw a man doing mid night and the man happen to be a man they know very well, they call him pastor.

“They traced him down to his house. The next morning the youth went to his house to ask him to know what he was doing at the center of the road. When we got there we asked him, he denied. He said he a pastor that he had nothing to with fetish things he doesn’t deal with them.

“We met him with Elijah and we asked him he said nothing that he came to see his friend to talk about maritime, we allows him.

“So we asked the man we came to see to allow us see his compound, he refused entry. Until we opened one of his chambers and we saw all manner of Fetish things.”
