  • Saudi crown prince promises Trump $600bn trade, investment boost

Saudi crown prince promises Trump $600bn trade, investment boost

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman promised on Thursday to pile $600 billion into US trade and investments as he congratulated Donald Trump on his return to the White House.

Prince Mohammed, de facto leader of the world’s biggest oil exporter, made the pledge in a phone call following Trump’s inauguration on Monday, state media said.

Trump forged close relations with Riyadh in his first term and is now expected to push Saudi Arabia, home of Islam’s holiest sites, towards normalising ties with Israel as a major foreign policy objective.

“The crown prince affirmed the kingdom’s intention to broaden its investments and trade with the United States over the next four years, in the amount of $600 billion, and potentially beyond that,” the Saudi Press Agency reported.

It did not give details of the source of the funds, which represent more than half of Saudi GDP, or how they are expected to be used.

Prince Mohammed, 39, also passed on congratulations from his father, King Salman, during the call with Trump.

Trump’s first visit as president in 2017 was to Saudi Arabia, and this week he joked that a major financial commitment could persuade him to do the same again.

“I did it with Saudi Arabia last time because they agreed to buy $450 billion worth of our product,” he said.

Trump quipped he would repeat the visit “if Saudi Arabia wanted to buy another 450 or 500 (billion dollars) — we’ll up it for all the inflation”.

During Trump’s first term, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco broke with longstanding Arab policy to recognise Israel under the Abraham Accords.

The new Trump administration is expected to try to repeat the process with Saudi Arabia, following similar efforts under president Joe Biden.

    – Iran threats –

Saudi Arabia broke off talks with US officials about ties with Israel early in the Gaza war, and has repeatedly insisted it will not recognise Israel without the existence of a Palestinian state.

However, a long-awaited ceasefire in Gaza and a possible easing in regional tensions could pave the way for a resumption of dialogue.

In exchange for recognising Israel, the Arab world’s richest country hopes to secure a US defence pact and Washington’s help with a civil nuclear programme.

In his own call with the crown prince on Thursday, new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and “the threats posed by Iran and its proxies”, according to a statement.

“They also discussed the benefits of the US-Saudi economic partnership and the opportunities to grow their economies in a variety of fields including AI,” a spokesperson for Rubio said.

Trump actively courted Saudi Arabia, long an important energy and security partner for Washington, during his first term.

When he arrived in Riyadh in 2017, he was treated to an elaborate welcome involving a sword dance and a fly-past of air force jets.

Relations later cooled with Prince Mohammed faulting Trump for failing to respond more aggressively after a 2019 attack widely blamed on Iran halved the Gulf kingdom’s crude output.

Relations later cooled with Prince Mohammed faulting Trump for failing to respond more aggressively after a 2019 attack widely blamed on Iran halved the Gulf kingdom’s crude output.

Riyadh and Trump’s team nevertheless sought to boost ties after his departure from the White House, in particular through investments and construction deals for his privately owned conglomerate the Trump Organization.

Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, has defended receiving a Saudi investment in his private equity firm that reports put at $2 billion.

  • Madison Keys stuns Swiatek to set up Australian Open final against Sabalenka

Madison Keys stuns Swiatek to set up Australian Open final against Sabalenka

Madison Keys fought back from a set down on Thursday to shock Iga Swiatek in a nail-biter and set up an Australian Open final against two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.

The 19th seed battled through a thrilling semi-final on a final-set tiebreak against the world number two 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (10/8) after Sabalenka had swept aside Paula Badosa in straight sets.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek had not dropped her serve since the first round but was broken eight times by Keys, who saved a match point on her way to edging a see-sawing, marathon battle in 2hr 35min.

It is the American’s first final in Melbourne.

It was the first time ever an Australian Open semi-final had been decided by a third-set 10-point tiebreak.

Earlier, Sabalenka put her close friendship with Badosa aside to stay on track for a 26-year first.

The Belarusian world number one romped home 6-4, 6-2 on Rod Laver Arena.

It was very different in the second of the semi-finals, as Keys flew out of the blocks and broke Swiatek in the opening game — the first time the Pole had dropped her serve since the first round.

It signalled the start of a roller coaster first set in which both players struggled for control. Three breaks each were exchanged before Swiatek finally edged it on her second set point after 49 minutes.

The world number two was far from convincing, and the second set saw a massive turnaround.

Keys surged back in sizzling fashion, breaking Swiatek four times, unleashing three huge aces in one game, as she took it to a deciding third set where she saved a match point before finally getting over the line.

    – ‘So proud of myself’ –

Sabalenka has now won 20 straight matches at the Australian Open to close on a third consecutive crown — something that hasn’t happened this century.

The last person to achieve the feat was Martina Hingis in 1999 and only four other women have completed the three-peat — Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf and Monica Seles.

Court was in the stadium watching.

“Honestly, I don’t know. I’m so proud of myself. I’m proud of my team that we’re able to put ourselves in such a situation,” Sabalenka said of being on the cusp of a third title.

“It’s a privilege, you know. If I’m able to put my name into history, it will mean a lot. It will mean the world to me.”

Sabalenka last year described Badosa as her “best friend” and “soulmate” and said she was “super happy” that they got to play each other on such a big stage.

“A tough match, tough battle,” she said.

“I hope she’s still my friend. I’m sure she’ll hate me for the next hour, day or two, but I’m okay with that, I can handle that.”

The 11th seed Badosa had stunned world number three Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach her maiden Slam semi-final at the age of 27 and came out swinging to open a 2-0 lead.

But that was as good as it got as Sabalenka powered back and sped to victory.

Despite losing, Badosa’s run to the last four capped a remarkable comeback after a brutal back injury in 2023 had her last year considering quitting tennis.

Instead, her Melbourne exploits will return her to the top 10 for the first time since October 2022. Keys will also return to the top 10.

  • Alaafin yet to begin traditional rites, He’ll go into seclusion on arrival, says Afonja

Alaafin yet to begin traditional rites, He’ll go into seclusion on arrival, says Afonja

FOLLOWING a report that the Alaafin-elect, Prince Akeem Owoade had put traditional rites that usually precede the crowning of a new Alaafin on hold, the Head of Oyo Princes, Chief Mukaila Afonja, yesterday said the new Alaafin has not even begun any seclusion rites.

He assured that the normal rites that all Alaafin usually undergo will start immediately after the 46th Alaafin comes back from Canada.

He said this while speaking with Vanguard in a telephone interview.

Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State had presented a certificate and a staff of office to the new Alaafin at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s office.

The governor also said all those who were trying to disturb the selection process by allegedly collecting money would be prosecuted.

Following the presentation, some kingmakers who had earlier nominated Prince Luqman Gbadegesin faulted the selection process through their counsel, Mr Adekunle Sobaloju(SAN) adding that the governor should approach the court instead of accusing the Oyo Mesi in the public.

On arrival in Oyo after the presentation ceremony, the Alaafin-elect was warmly received by a large crowd of Oyo indigenes.

Just when many people believed that the new monarch had started some royal rites preparatory to his installation, it was gathered that he had travelled to Canada to properly finalize his resignation from his place of work.

Clarifying the issue, Chief Afonja, said the 46th Alaafin has collected only the certificate and the staff of the office noting that seclusion rites will be done anytime he is back in the country.

When asked if the new Alaafin had not contravened the tradition by travelling abroad during seclusion, he said, “He has collected only the certificate, he is yet to undergo all the necessary rites. When he comes, he will go into seclusion.”

“When he is back in the country, he will enter Ipebi(seclusion) and while in Ipebi, the new Alaafin will go through all necessary rites as preparation for the coronation which will come up in April”.

“He will spend almost 30 days in Ipebi. He will undergo many lessons and tutelage. He will begin the rites soon”.
When Vanguard contacted another source in the ancient city, he ruled out the insinuations that the Ifa Priests and other traditionalists were reluctant to perform the rites for the new monarch.

He said, “Since modernity has usurped the role of the traditionalists in some areas, we have to make some adjustments. In the olden days, once a king had been picked, he would immediately go into mandatory seclusion which is 21 days and would not go out until he performed all the rites. After that, the coronation ceremony and presentation of staff and certificate can follow”.

  • Breakthrough research at ABUAD-MSH offers hope for early osteoarthritis intervention

Breakthrough research at ABUAD-MSH offers hope for early osteoarthritis intervention

A team of researchers at Afe Babalola University Multi-System Hospital (ABUAD-MSH), has achieved a breakthrough in orthopaedic surgery in addressing the burden of osteoarthritis in Nigeria. By utilising advanced research, innovative treatment methods, and comprehensive care approaches, the health institution has moved beyond traditional diagnostic techniques.

The groundbreaking research which has significant implications for osteoporosis diagnosis and management,  lays a scientific foundation for the development of targeted therapies for osteoporosis patients and preventing its progression in the country.

Osteoarthritis is an under-diagnosed and under-treated degenerative joint disease, characterized by the gradual breakdown of cartilage, causes significant pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, making it a leading cause of disability among older adults.

Led by the Deputy Medical Director, ABUAD-MSH, Dr. Akinola Akinmade,  the research team investigated the relationship between the use of novel non-radiation biomarkers and the severity of knee osteoarthritis in  patients. Their findings revealed that the high levels of the biomarker could be an important marker for detecting the disease early.

In a statement, “Advancing Orthopaedic Care: Tackling Osteoarthritis Through Innovation and Research at Afe Babalola University Multi-System Hospital”,  Akinmade, who is one of the university’s top orthopaedic surgeons, said the research has important benefits for doctors and patients, noting that identifying osteoarthritis early through biomarker testing allows for prompt treatment, it can help postpone more invasive options like joint replacement surgery.

“ABUAD-MSH has established itself as a hub for cutting-edge research on osteoarthritis. While traditional diagnosis of the condition is based on weight bearing plain X-rays, Dr. Akinmade and his team have researched the use of non-radiation linked biomarkers like serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) as a potential biomarker for early detection of knee osteoarthritis.

“This research, conducted in collaboration with renowned experts in the field, offers a promising avenue for diagnosing the disease in its early stages, before irreversible joint damage occurs. The research involved a cohort of patients with varying degrees of knee osteoarthritis and examined the correlation between COMP levels and disease severity. The findings revealed that elevated COMP levels are associated with advanced cartilage degradation, making it a reliable indicator of disease progression.

“This research has significant implications for both clinicians and patients. Early detection of osteoarthritis through biomarker analysis allows for timely intervention, potentially delaying the need for surgical procedures such as joint replacement. Moreover, it provides a scientific basis for developing targeted therapies aimed at preserving cartilage and preventing further damage.”

Further, Akinmade argued that by detecting osteoarthritis early, clinicians can implement interventions to slow disease progression, preserve joint function, and improve patients’ quality of life.

“As the population ages, osteoarthritis has become increasingly prevalent, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In Nigeria, where access to specialised healthcare is limited for many, the condition poses unique challenges. It is estimated that over 10 percent of the global population aged 60 and above suffers from symptomatic osteoarthritis, with the knee and hip joints being the most commonly affected.

“This research underscores ABUAD-MSH’s commitment to advancing medical knowledge and improving patient care. By pioneering innovative diagnostic approaches, the institution is making significant contributions to the field of rheumatology and improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from osteoarthritis.

Noting that since its inception, ABUAD-MSH has prioritized excellence in healthcare delivery, with the aim of becoming a leading center for medical innovation in Nigeria, Akinmade explained that the impact of osteoarthritis extends beyond physical pain.

“This research underscores the hospital’s commitment to advancing evidence-based medicine and contributing to global knowledge on degenerative joint diseases. At ABUAD-MSH, a dedicated effort has been made to address the burden of osteoarthritis through advanced research, innovative treatment methods, and comprehensive care. The hospital’s achievements in the management of osteoarthritis, highlight the transformative impact of a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare.

“For elderly individuals, the condition often limits independence, reduces quality of life, and increases the risk of comorbidities such as depression and cardiovascular disease. Addressing this condition requires a holistic approach that integrates early diagnosis, effective management strategies, and accessible care.

Further, Akinmade stated that the institution already provides a wide range of treatment options from non-surgical to for osteoarthritis, designed to address the diverse needs of its patients

“ABUAD-MSH is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities that enable the delivery of world-class orthopaedic care. The hospital’s focus on continuous innovation has led to the integration of cutting-edge technologies, such as advanced imaging systems and robotic surgical tools. These investments not only enhance diagnostic accuracy but also improve surgical outcomes.

“The hospital’s commitment to infrastructure development is further reflected in its efforts to provide equitable access to healthcare. Recognizing the economic challenges faced by many patients, ABUAD-MSH has introduced subsidized treatment programs to ensure that quality care remains accessible to all segments of the population.”

On the role of research in public health, he emphasised that integration of research into clinical practice by the team at ABUAD-MSH demonstrates the critical role of evidence-based medicine in addressing public health challenges.

“The hospital’s focus on research highlights the potential of locally conducted studies to generate solutions that are both effective and contextually relevant. By exploring innovative diagnostic tools, such as biomarkers, and evaluating the effectiveness of various treatment modalities, ABUAD-MSH is contributing to the development of a comprehensive framework for osteoarthritis management in Nigeria and beyond.

“ABUAD-MSH’s orthopaedic programme is not limited to osteoarthritis. The hospital offers a broad spectrum of services, including trauma care, spinal surgeries, and the management of congenital musculoskeletal disorders. This comprehensive approach ensures that patients receive holistic care, regardless of the complexity of their conditions.”

He said efforts are also underway to expand the hospital’s capacity for orthopaedic research and training. By fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration, ABUAD-MSH aims to produce the next generation of healthcare leaders who will drive advancements in orthopaedics.

“As ABUAD-MSH continues to grow, the hospital remains committed to its mission of delivering world-class care while addressing the unique healthcare needs of the Nigerian population. The hospital’s plans to scale up its research and clinical programs, particularly in the area of osteoarthritis, reflect its vision of becoming a global leader in healthcare innovation,” Akinmade stated.

  • Lagos seals building on drainage system

Lagos seals building on drainage system

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, on Thursday, sealed an ongoing construction building for stacking materials on the drainage system.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, gave the order during an inspection of projects and sites in Lagos Island and its environs.

Wahab, who was displeased with the activities going on in the area, said the materials were blocking the drainage system, hence the seal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the building that was sealed was situated at No. 109, Alakoro Str. in Lagos Island.

“They are stacking their materials on the road and our drainage system.

“The materials were stacked on our drainage system, and it is not allowed.

“They block the drainage system by doing that, so that is why we say they should serve the notices so they can move those materials and clean the system, and then we will unseal them,” he said.

Talking about the visit and inspection on Lagos Island, Wahab said the visit was aimed at regeneration of the area.

“This is a different section of Lagos Island, and this should be our second or third time on this axis of Lagos Island.

“Thankfully, the state government, through Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has awarded the regeneration of the Lagos Island drainage system and even the road infrastructure.

“But we also noticed there are one or two areas and collectors that are very critical to deflooding Lagos Island that were not captured in that plan.

“So, this morning we are here to look at this Olusi Bombata collector as well as the Alagbafo collector, and what we all saw is not something we are happy about,” he said.

He added that people had wilfully built on this collector, which was disappointing, saying it would be difficult to maintain the infrastructures if built on it.

“We are not happy with what we saw because people have wilfully built on it, and when you build on those infrastructures, how do you expect us to maintain those infrastructures?

“They have abused those infrastructures, and the job-giving directive to the appropriate department is to serve the notices.

“By weekend, we are coming back here to see the level of compliance. You can’t, and we won’t allow anybody make this state a state where life becomes nasty, brutish, and short,” he said.

He added that these were public infrastructure built for public use, assuring everyone it would be stopped.

“We are going to clear those things and then keep the maintenance going, then find a way to re-award or award the contract,” he said.

When asked if the local governments were in sync with the ministry over the cleanup of the environment, Wahab said they had been cooperating fully well with the ministry.

“Thankfully, in Lagos, we work with our local governments, though there are still some gaps we have to iron out, but the markets are exclusively under the local government.

“However, that does not give them the power or rights to infringe on a law like the environmental law of the state that provides for the setback that must be allowed between a collector and a builder.

“That’s what we are just trying to enforce here. We are not having issues with our local government.

“If anything, we’ve had the most wonderful relationship with our local government,” he said.

Wahab added that the state would continue to advocate and enforce the law to ensure a clean environment.

“Continuous advocacy and enforcement is key because a lot of people feel that the government waits for them to build on that bridge before going in.

“The wheel of justice may be slow, but it usually grinds to a halt somehow. So we keep advocating that they should not do it, because some people are just recalcitrant.

“They are incorrigible, so for those persons, they would deliberately do it, believing the government would never come, and whenever we come or we observe it, we remove it.

“We are always very slow to wield a big stick, but we emphasise more on the advocacy this year,” he said.

He added that the advocacy would be an ongoing program just like for the styrofoams, among others.

“We will continue the enlightenment, like we are doing for styrofoam and single-use plastics, which are going to be phased out this year, with other kinds of things that we don’t want in these states.

We must collectively protect the states, and the citizens must take ownership and make us achieve that,” he said.
