Insecurity worsens: Herdsmen kill 144 in Plateau, Benue in 14 days

MAKURDI — No fewer than 144 persons have been killed by herdsmen in the two north central states of Plateau and Benue states in the last two weeks, as the blood-letting continued late Tuesday, with the killing of at least 13 persons, while scores of others sustained injuries, with over 50 houses razed.

Recall that within the period, 104 persons, comprising 52 in Bassa local government area and another 52 in Bokkos LGA of Plateau State, were killed by the marauding herdsmen, while at least 40 were also killed in Benue State.

In Benue, three persons were killed on April 3 when a Benue Links bus was ambushed at Ikobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area, LGA, while on April 10, two farmers were murdered by the marauders in Gwer West LGA.

Same day, three persons were killed at Mbasombo community also in Gwer East LGA, while the latest attack on Otobi Akpa in Otukpo LGA and the boundary with Nasarawa State claimed the lives of at least 13 persons, with several others declared missing.

Aside from the killings in the north central states, Boko Haram insurgents also on Tuesday, attacked Adamawa communities in Hong local government area, killing seven persons, while scores of others are still missing.

The latest killings in Benue on Tuesday evening, came as Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State yesterday announced prohibition of night grazing, transportation of cattle by vehicles after 7:00 pm, and restriction of the use of motorcycles from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am across the state until further notice, as part of measures to ward off the marauding herdsmen.

The attack on Otobi Akpa community started at about 6:00pm from the popular Otobi junction when over 20 armed herdsmen in a commando style, shot sporadically at anybody they sighted.
TheY also set ablaze no fewer than 50 houses.

Unfortunately most the of the vigilantes who could have stopped them from entering the main town to perpetrate their mission, had moved to Adim village of Akpa to attend a burial.

The terrifying sounds of gunshots created palpable fear as many took to their heels, while others who were curious to know what was happening ran into the herdsmen who opened fire on them, killing at least 13 persons in the process, while many escaped with gunshot wounds.

Some other victims were butchered with cutlasses, with their brains scattered around the scenes they were killed.
Investigation revealed that the killer herdsmen invaded Otobi Akpa and other Akpa communities to resist the law against open grazing which stopped them from grazing their cattle in the area.

One of the elders of the community, Adikwu Ogbe, who lamented the attack, recalled that Otobi Akpa community was one of the most peaceful communities in Idoma land, noting that in the past, the community had lived peacefully with Fulani herders until recently when they (herders) started bearing sophisticated arms and threatening the locals.

Recall that about three weeks ago, a security guard with Otukpo dam was shot and dismembered by herdsmen who enter Otobi village and shot sporadically in a night attack.

At the time of filing this report, many residents were seen fleeing the community, while search for those missing was in progress.

There was also no sign of security presence in the affected areas.

Benue State Deputy Governor, Samuel Ode, in company of heavily armed security operatives, yesterday visited the area to sympathise with many of the residents who are currently taking refuge at the Federal Government College, Otobi.

He appealed to them to remain calm, assuring that measures were being put in place to end further attack by the killers herdsmen.

Meanwhile, the community has become a ghost town as virtually everyone has fled the area for fear of another attack.

7 killed, many more missing as Boko Haram insurgents attack Adamawa community

While the herders are running riot in Plateau, Benue and Nasarawa states, Boko Haram insurgents in the early hours of yesterday, launched an attack on Adamawa communities in Hong local government, killing seven persons, while scores of others have been declared missing.

The attack, which is the fourth this year, occurred in the quiet communities of Banga and Larh and some adjoining villages in Hong LGA.

At least seven persons were confirmed dead, including a vigilante, killed by detonated explosives.

The assault also saw a police van shattered by the explosives, though its occupants miraculously escaped unharmed.
The attack in Banga claimed three lives, including two men shot dead by insurgents and a woman who fell and died during the stampede in nearby Larh.

According to locals, the attackers came in their large numbers and started shooting sporadically in all directions in the community .

“In the twinkle of an eye, the entire communities were deserted as people scampered in different directions for their lives,” Ma’am Yakub, an eyewitness told Vanguard.

He said in the ensuring confusion, many people got missing as their whereabouts are unknown.

The attack became more dreadful following the tragic loss of a vigilante in Banga, who was killed when a bomb detonated during efforts to secure the area.

“It’s heartbreaking that we are losing our people to these monsters, and now, even those protecting us are now the targets,’’ said a community leader who requested anonymity.

Local sources noted that the insurgents often plant such devices to deter security operatives from pursuing them, a strategy that had repeatedly disrupted response efforts.

The chairman of Hong local government council, Mr Waang Inuwa, who confirmed the attack, called for more military presence in the communities .

The attack on Banga and Larh underscores the persistent threat posed by Boko Haram in North-Eastern Nigeria, despite claims by authorities that the group had been significantly weakened.

“We feel abandoned. These attacks keep happening, and we’re left to fend for ourselves,” another community leader lamented .

Mutfwang prohibits night grazing, transportation of cattle

To restore calm and strengthen vigilance in Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang yesterday announced the prohibition of night grazing, transportation of cattle by vehicle after 7:00 pm, and the use of motorcycles restricted from 7:00 pm to 6:00 am across the state until further notice.

The governor in a state-wide broadcast, said the security measures were effective from Wednesday, April 16th.
His words: “I speak to you today (yeterday) not only as your governor but as a fellow son of Plateau who shares in your anguish and feels the weight of the pain inflicted upon our people.

“We are once again confronted by sorrow as heart-wrenching attacks have taken the lives of innocent citizens in our communities.

“In the late hours of Sunday, April 13, the calm of Kimakpa area of Kwall District in Bassa LGA was shattered by violent assaults on Zike village. Innocent men, women, and children were murdered in cold blood.

“Homes were torched, properties ravaged, and entire families were left in agony. These attacks occurred, even as we were still mourning the loss of over 50 lives in Bokkos.

“The scale, frequency and intent of these atrocities are unmistakable. Let us be clear: this is not random violence. This is not an isolated conflict between farmers and herders. What we are witnessing is a systematic and premeditated campaign—one that seeks to displace, destabilise, and instill terror and fear in our people and communities.

“The tragic echoes of Dogo Na Hawa, Riyom, Barkin-Ladi, Mangu, and the Christmas Eve massacres in Bokkos remain vivid. The cycle continues, but it must not endure. Enough Is Enough!

‘’As your governor, I stand resolved—Plateau shall not be overrun by fear, nor shall we accept this culture of bloodshed as the new normal. My administration is intensifying efforts to protect our people and enforce the rule of law across all local governments.

“Only days ago, I visited Hurti, Mbar, Manguna, and Daffo to witness, first hand, the devastation left behind by the terrorists. I had earlier stopped at Ruwi, where mourners were brazenly attacked at a wake.

“What I saw moved me profoundly—the suffering of displaced families now crammed into churches and temporary shelters, their lives uprooted overnight.

“But let me reassure you: my government is alive to its constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property, and we are rising to the occasion more determined than ever.

“For far too long, our beloved state has made the headlines for the wrong reasons, thereby casting a shadow over our immense potential and deterring the inflow of much-needed foreign direct and local investments.

“These investments could have been the catalyst for harnessing our abundant natural resources and lifting our people out of poverty. We cannot afford to let this unfortunate reality persist.

‘’Despite this sorrow, the strength and courage of our people continue to inspire me. I extend heartfelt appreciation to the national and state emergency management agencies for their prompt response in providing emergency aid and comfort to survivors.

“I hereby announce the following measures, effective Wednesday, April 16th, night grazing of cattle is strictly prohibited, and transportation of cattle by vehicle is banned after 7:00 pm. The use of motorcycles is restricted from 7:00pm to 6:00am across the state until further notice.

“We are also activating community-based response systems. I urge traditional leaders and youth associations to reactivate local vigilante groups and organize night patrols in coordination with the security agencies. We must protect our communities while upholding the rule of law.”

The governor furthermore mandated the newly inaugurated Inter-Religious Council to begin immediate engagement with all stakeholders to address the deeper issues surrounding these attacks.

“I shall also be appointing a special envoy on peace to lead grassroots consultations and intelligence coordination as a fact-finding committee, comprising respected independent voices, to investigate the root cause of this resurgence in violence and offer actionable recommendations.

Leave France, return home, Obi tasks Tinubu

Speaking on the killings in Plateau yesterday, the presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi asked President Bola Tinubu to cut short his retreat in France and return home to stop the ongoing mass killings of Nigerians by non-state actors.

In the tweet, titled “Mr. President, Domestic problems beckon”, the former Anambra State governor wrote: “I am compelled at this time in our lives as a nation to call our retreating President’s attention to the security challenges at home, which entails that he immediately suspend his ongoing retreat in a foreign land and come home to address the overwhelming security situation across the country.

“This urgent call has become necessary, following the rising incidents of crimes and criminalities all over Nigeria, with an apparent absence of governance.

“In the two weeks you have been away, over 150 Nigerians have lost their lives to insecurity across Nigeria, especially in Plateau and Zamfara states.

“The primary duty of any government is securing the lives and property of its citizens and one wonders the type of retreat going on in another country where peace has been secured by their leaders, while blood continues to flow in our country.

Tinubu must restore law and order in Plateau, Benue states — Falana

On his part, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, said: “The Northern Governors Forum banned open grazing in February 2021, while the Southern Governors Forum banned open grazing in May 2021

“In 2022, the Federal Government adopted ranching as a solution to the violent clashes between herders and farmers.

‘’Because of the failure of the federal and the 36 state governments to implement the ban on open grazing, hundreds of people have been killed by armed herders and other gunmen.

‘’We call on President Bola Tinubu to direct the 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army in Jos, and the AIG Zone 4 of the Nigeria Police Force in Jos to restore law and order in Benue and Plateau without any further delay.’’

We’re deeply pained with Plateau bloodshed — Northern Elders

In its reaction, Northern Elders Forum, NEF, expressed deep pain over the recent bloodshed in some communities in Plateau State.

NEF in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Prof Abubakar Jika Jiddere, described the killings as barbaric and a national disgrace.

It lamented that Plateau State that was once a symbol of unity, peace and cultural diversity in Nigeria, had now become a theatre of bloodshed and lawlessness.

The statement read: “The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, is outraged by the relentless and barbaric killings taking place in Plateau State. What was once a symbol of unity, peace, and cultural diversity in Nigeria has now become a theatre of bloodshed and lawlessness.

“The magnitude of violence being inflicted on innocent citizens is nothing short of a national disgrace, and a damning indictment of the Federal Government’s failure to discharge its primary duty of protecting lives and property.

“It is unacceptable that such acts of mass murder and destruction continue unabated, with little or no meaningful response from those charged with safeguarding the nation.

“The silence and inaction of the Federal Government can no longer be tolerated. NEF demands the immediate and massive deployment of well-equipped security forces to Plateau State to halt these atrocities and restore order.

“The government must not only apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators but must also do so swiftly and decisively. The blood of innocent Nigerians cries out for justice, and there must be no sanctuary for those who orchestrate or enable these horrors.

“We further demand that the Federal Government provide adequate compensation to victims and affected communities who have suffered unimaginable loss. An independent investigative panel must be established without delay, and its findings must be made public to ensure accountability and prevent further bloodshed.

  • Neymar injured just 34 minutes into Santos comeback

Neymar injured just 34 minutes into Santos comeback

Brazilian football star Neymar Jr. has suffered another devastating injury blow just 34 minutes into his highly anticipated return for Santos in the Brasileirão.

The setback, reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, adds to a growing list of physical troubles that have marred the twilight years of his career.

“Neymar Jr leaves the pitch with a new injury as Santos started him tonight in the Brasileirão. After 34 minutes, Neymar has been subbed off,” Romano wrote on Wednesday.

This incident is the latest in a series of injuries that have plagued the 33-year-old, casting further doubt on his ability to return to peak form. Neymar had only recently terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in January 2025, ending a short-lived stint marked by recurring injuries and limited appearances.

Al-Hilal, which signed Neymar in August 2023 on a reported $104 million-per-year deal, released a statement thanking him for his contributions and wishing him well. The forward played just seven matches for the club, with injuries, including a ruptured cruciate ligament sustained during a Brazil World Cup qualifier in October 2023, limiting his time on the pitch.

A further hamstring issue during his attempted comeback in late 2024 added to his woes. Al-Hilal head coach Jorge Jesus expressed concern at the time: “He can no longer play at the level we are used to. Things have become difficult for him, unfortunately.”

Despite mounting setbacks, Neymar remains committed to representing Brazil in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. “I know this will be my last World Cup, my last shot, my last chance and I will do everything I can to play in it,” he told CNN in January.

Following his Al-Hilal departure, speculation swirled around a return to Santos—the club where Neymar first rose to international stardom. His appearance in the Brasileirão was meant to signal a fresh chapter in his storied career. Instead, it has reignited concerns about his long-term fitness and future in the sport.

Neymar remains Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals in 127 appearances. Once hailed as the successor to Pelé, he starred for Barcelona alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez, before making a record-breaking €220 million move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017. Despite five Ligue 1 titles and a UEFA Champions League final appearance, his time in Europe was often disrupted by injuries and internal discord.

2027: Northern group pledges 2m votes for Tinubu

The Northern Nigeria Youths Union (NNYU), has promised to garner over two million votes for President Bola Tinubu during the 2027 General Elections.

The Chairman of the union, Abubakar Aliyu, discussed this on Wednesday shortly after the conclusion of a major meeting held in Jos, Plateau.

“We are speaking after the conclusion of a large gathering of young men and women who have committed themselves to contributing to the journey of Tinubu.

“This is after seeing how he is implementing a myriad of developmental projects across the country, especially in the Northern parts of Nigeria,” Aliyu said in a statement issued to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.

The chairman, who is also the Galadiman Takai, cited Tinubu’s recent inauguration of the construction of the Abuja to Kaduna to Kano Highway.

Aliyu said, “This is a road that has three lanes on each side, which will attract more developments to the North and the entire country.”

He also referenced the phenomenal decline in the prices of food stuffs during just-concluded Ramadan’ fast, averring, “everyone glaringly witnessed this feat.

“The prices of various goods had also nosedived and even the price of fuel had reduced significantly.

“We in our organisation, the Northern Nigeria Youth Union, assure the president that when the election comes, we will give him more than two million votes.”

Aliyu stated that the union had registered members, Muslims and Christians, all volunteers in each of the 19 Northern states.

He added, “It is is not that we were given money from somewhere, we are just volunteers with patriotism.

“Considering our large membership, when the elections are held, we will also attract the attention of many people to cast their votes for Tinubu.

” Therefore, with a large membership of over 65,000 people, and the efforts we will make to get people with voter’s cards, will ensure that we generate the votes for Tinubu.

“This is a guarantee that this will indeed be done.”

The chairman, however, called on Tinubu to ensure that all his political appointees were closely monitored.

“This call becomes necessary so that the people could be properly cared for as per the constitutional provisions,”Aliyu explained.

Trump blocked Israeli plan to strike Iran nuclear sites – Report

US President Donald Trump scuppered an Israeli plan to strike Iranian nuclear sites, the New York Times reported on Wednesday, as Washington attempts to reach a deal to curb Tehran’s weapons program.

The United States and Iran, which have not had diplomatic relations for more than 40 years, are seeking a new nuclear deal after Trump pulled out of a landmark agreement during his first term.

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are due to meet in Rome on Saturday, a week after they held the highest-level Iranian-US nuclear negotiations since the collapse of a 2015 accord.

In March, Trump sent a letter to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urging talks but warning of possible military action if they failed to produce a deal.

Trump administration officials revealed to the New York Times that Israel had sought Washington’s assistance to carry out an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities in May.

According to the Times, the plan and its possible maneuvers were under consideration for months.

But during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House last week, Trump told the Israelis he would not support an attack. The president instead publicly announced the direct talks with Tehran.

Iran has consistently denied that it is seeking nuclear weapons, but has stepped up its nuclear capacities since Trump scrapped the 2015 agreement.

The latest International Atomic Energy Agency report noted with “serious concern” that Iran had an estimated 274.8 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent, nearing the weapons grade of 90 percent.

  • Buhari’s men pass confidence vote on Tinubu

Buhari’s men pass confidence vote on Tinubu

ABUJA: Against reports of discontent among members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change CPC, one of the legacy parties which formed the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders of the bloc have passed a vote of confidence on President Bola Tinubu.

The CPC bloc had former President Muhammadu Buhari as its leader before the merger to form the APC.
Since the defection of one of its members and a former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai to Social Democratic Party, SDP, there had been concerns that the CPC bloc in the APC was feeling marginalized and planning to ditch the ruling party.

The bloc in a resolution, yesterday, said: “Recent misleading narratives suggesting defection or discontent among CPC stakeholders are baseless, mischievous, and should be disregarded.

“We remain a vital part of the APC, fully committed to its leadership and vision.”

Those who signed the resolutions include a former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umaru Al-Makura, former Governor of Katsina State and ex-House Speaker, Aminu Masari, Mallam Adamu Adamu, Senator Ibrahim Musa, Senator Mustafa Salihu, Farouk Aliyu, Almajiri Geidam, Waziri Bulama, Dr. Nasiru Argungu and Dr. Dominic Alancha.

Others were Ayuba Balami, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, Lucy Ajayi, Captain Bala Jibrin, Uche Ufearoh, Alh. Yusuf Salihu, Abubakar Maikudi, Engr. Mutallib Badmus, Alh. Muhammed Datti, Muhammed Etsu, Chief Jerry Johnson and Alh. Alkali Ajikolo.

Part of the resolutions read: “We, the undersigned leaders and dedicated members of the former CPC, instrumental in the historic merger that birthed the APC, issue this statement to reaffirm our unwavering loyalty to our great party and express our strong solidarity with the administration of President Tinubu.

“Recent misleading narratives suggesting defection or discontent among CPC stakeholders are baseless, mischievous, and should be disregarded. We remain a vital part of the APC, fully committed to its leadership and vision.

“We categorically state that we have neither left the APC nor do we intend to leave. The CPC bloc remains one of the APC’s foundational pillars, and we are resolute in our commitment to the party and its progressive ideals.

“As a legacy party within the APC, we take pride in the sacrifices made to build a platform that fosters national unity, justice, and development. We will not allow individuals to dismantle the party we helped build through years of tireless dedication.

“Attempts to sow disunity within the party and the country do not reflect the will or position of genuine CPC core members and are wholly unacceptable.

“We fully endorse the economic and governance reforms led by President Tinubu. While these policies may present challenges, they are crucial steps toward rebuilding our economy and securing a prosperous future for all Nigerians. We urge patience and collective support as their benefits unfold.

“We acknowledge that some members may feel sidelined, but such concerns are not unique to any one bloc. We encourage those affected to seek redress through established constitutional channels within the party, rather than resorting to negative public agitation or hasty exits.

“At this pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey, all APC members, especially those deeply rooted in the party’s formation, must work together to preserve its legacy and consolidate Nigeria’s democracy. Actions that undermine our unity and national stability must be avoided.

“We urge APC leadership to increase engagement with members at all levels. Strengthening internal communication will foster inclusiveness, reduce tensions, and enhance support for the party’s programs. Party unity must be continuously nurtured to sustain past gains and secure a prosperous future.

“We therefore reaffirm our loyalty to the APC and our steadfast support for President Tinubu. The CPC family remains a crucial pillar of the APC and will continue to play a responsible role in its growth and in Nigeria’s progress.”

  • 2027: Atiku’s coalition, PDP govs clash over fronting for Tinubu

2027: Atiku’s coalition, PDP govs clash over fronting for Tinubu

ABUJA—THE decision of the governors, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, not to be part of the planned coalition did not go down well with the organisers as the anti-Tinubu coalition, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, yesterday, accused the PDP governors of playing the spoiler for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.

The anti-Tinubu coalition also accused the PDP governors of usurping the powers of other organs of the PDP and killing the opposition.

This came on a day the former Vice President noted that the coalition of opposition forces, he is championing, would adopt any platform that ensures good governance in its bid to unseat the President in 2027.

Recall that the PDP Governors’ Forum, at its meeting on April 14, resolved that it would not be part of any coalition with opposition political parties, politicians and other groups.

PDP Govs killing opposition — Atiku’s coalition

Reacting to the PDP governors’ position, spokesman of the coalition, Salihu Moh. Lukman said the coalition is a viable option to not only defeat the All Progressives Congress, APC, and President Tinubu but also to rescue Nigeria’s democracy from imminent collapse.

Lukman, in the statement, said: “For more than 10 years that the PDP had been out of power, Nigerians had waited for the party to dust itself up and provide the viable opposition that Nigeria needs. Instead, the party went into suspended animation until the rampaging Tinubu-led APC found a willing undertaker to finally put it to rest. The governors know that the virus that afflicts the PDP has no cure. They are only grandstanding. They know that Nigerians cannot accept this PDP as the alternative because it is clear to all discerning Nigerians that the ruling party has hijacked its soul.

“Nyesom Wike is the untouchable super minister in Asiwaju’s government not because of the sterling job he is doing in the FCT, but because he has done a great job of ensuring that the PDP is not able to present a presidential candidate to challenge Tinubu for power in 2027.

“However, with the growing coalition, that mandate has been adjusted in recent weeks. The new agenda is to revive the PDP to stand as a counterforce to the coalition and present a candidate that would split the vote in 2027. This PDP Governors’ Forum is wittingly or unwittingly, playing Asiwaju’s spoiler game and they expect Nigerians to take them seriously.”

Lukman insisted that rescuing Nigeria’s democracy, which is about rebuilding trust between citizens and politicians, is the main objective of the coalition.

According to him, the coalition has also become necessary if the integrity of political institutions, especially political parties in upholding and promoting political competition in the country is to be restored.

He said nothing represents the sad reality of the destruction of Nigeria’s democracy than the party that ruled Nigeria for 16 years and arrogantly boasted of ruling for 60 years, the PDP.

He said: “The mere fact that the NEC meeting of the party has not been held for two years and no Nigerian can confidently tell who is really in charge of the party is evidence of this collapse. This should be the concern of leaders of the party, including its Governors.

“Unfortunately, all we have seen of the PDP Governors is the flagrant usurpation of the powers assigned to the organs of the party. This is wrong. It is also a clear demonstration that if left alone, the PDP Governors will only continue the path of destroying democratic institutions in the country.

“As it is, all patriotic Nigerians who are committed to rescuing Nigerian democracy should recognize that the challenge facing us as a nation is beyond the romantic affiliation to so-called political parties such as the PDP, with many of its leaders operating as Trojan horses to the APC and President Tinubu’s government. It makes no sense to invest energy and resources in a party whose leaders are either appointees of the APC Government or undercover supporters. Otherwise, how can anyone justify the way PDP and its leaders are mismanaging themselves and practically putting themselves on the path of self-destruction and political irrelevance?

“For the avoidance of doubt, the coalition is fundamentally about rebuilding Nigerian democracy. Leaders of the coalition recognize this and more importantly, recognise all the challenges ahead. Resolving these challenges and building the confidence of Nigerians is about restoring the value of political negotiations as critical and fundamental to guaranteeing the survival of democracy. Over the years, both the PDP and APC have demonstrated contempt for political negotiations and to that extent disrespected agreements in various ways.

“The survival of Nigeria and the future of democracy largely depends on how political actors seek to reverse this ugly reality. This is what leaders of the coalition have been painstakingly working on. The coalition is working hard to finalise negotiations towards unveiling the coalition, along with its structure, and programme of action for rescuing Nigeria. The expectation is that all political actors, including leaders of PDP would recognise the danger facing the country and join the coalition as a necessary and perhaps strongest response towards rebuilding Nigerian democracy.

“This has not happened. However, even as the PDP Governors and some leaders of PDP express opposition to joining the coalition, we extend hands of fellowship to all political actors in the country to join us to rescue Nigerian democracy.”

We’ll ride any vehicle that guarantees good governance—Ex-VP

Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed that the coalition of opposition forces he is championing would adopt any platform that ensures good governance in its bid to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

Atiku made the declaration on Tuesday during a meeting with a delegation of National Opinion Leaders.

In a video of the meeting shared on his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, he assured that the “coalition train has left the station and would have multiple stops to bring on board Nigerians of all shades.”

Reacting to the PDP Governors’ Forum’s position on any planned coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections, Atiku said the coalition train had left the station.

While addressing the youth-dominated delegation of National Opinion Leaders, the former VP urged them to remain focused and not be swayed by short-term inducements.

His words: “Don’t be disrupted by people giving you pennies or kobos here and there, and nairas here and there, and then abandon your future, and the future of your children.

“Now, because of that, that’s why a number of us leaders from the parties I have mentioned—APC, PDP, Labour, and others—have come together to say we are going to have what I call in Hausa Sabuwar tafiya, which in English means a new path, a new pathway to a new Nigeria.

“And we have been meeting, and by the grace of God, very soon, we will announce, and we hope and we appeal to you all to be part of this movement.”

The former Vice President said the primary objective of the coalition was to ensure good governance.

He said: “Whatever vehicle that will give us good governance in the future of our children and grandchildren that is the vehicle we are going to ride on.”

While he urged the delegation to start planning and mobilising support, he said: “Get to planning and working together and getting as many Nigerians as possible to get converted to this new pathway.”

    They’re delusional— PDP govs

Reacting to the allegations of acting as spoilers for the President, the PDP governors described the coalition as being delusional.

Speaking on behalf of the forum, Director-General of the PDPGF, Dr Agbo Emmaneul said: “The PDP governors cannot dignify such over the bloated image of some self-delusional characters with unbridled sense or entitlement with any response.”

Ibas urges strict implementation of PPP agreements in Rivers sea ports

The Administrator of Rivers, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), has emphasised the need for strict implementation of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreements at Rivers sea ports to maximize benefits and boost economic growth.

Ibas made the remark when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Assets, led by its Chairman, Ademorin Kuye who called on him in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

According to him, in spite of the state’s critical role in maritime, oil and gas operations, and other industrial activities, weak regulatory frameworks, lack of accountability, and conflicting stakeholder interests have hindered business growth.

He noted that assets operating under the PPP framework in the state included the Onne Port Complex, oil and gas service zones, and certain segments of the Nigerian Ports Authority facilities.

Ibas said that some partnerships had enhanced operational capacities and revenue, while others underperformed due to weak regulatory frameworks and lack of accountability.

Ibas stressed the need for a comprehensive assessment of the assets to determine their state and chart a clear path forward.

He expressed that the National Assembly could help fine-tune existing PPP arrangements by ensuring transparency, adherence to contractual obligations, and improved monitoring mechanisms.

The Administrator emphasised the importance of collaboration with institutions like the National Assembly to achieve his administration’s mandate.

He called for continued support in repositioning Rivers State on the path of peace, progress, and prosperity.
Earlier, Mr Ademorin Kuye the House Committee Chairman, explained that the committee’s visit aimed to conduct oversight on federal assets, determine their usage and status, and evaluate PPP arrangements at Port Harcourt, Ibeto, and Onne Ports.

Kuye said that the committee would work with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission(ICPC), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) to ensure Nigerians benefit from asset disposal.

UK top court rules definition of ‘a woman’ based on sex at birth

Britain’s Supreme Court ruled Wednesday the legal definition of a “woman” is based on a person’s sex at birth, a landmark decision with far-reaching implications for the bitter debate over trans rights.

In a win for Scottish gender-critical campaigners who brought the case to the UK’s highest court, five London judges unanimously ruled “the terms ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman, and biological sex”.

However, the court underlined that the Equality Act also protected transgender people from discrimination.

The act “gives transgender people protection” through the protected characteristic of gender reassignment, but also protecting against discrimination in their acquired gender, Justice Patrick Hodge said handing down the verdict.

It is the culmination of a years-long battle between the Scottish government and campaign group For Women Scotland (FWS) — which launched an appeal to the Supreme Court after losing pleas in Scottish courts over an obscure legislation aimed at hiring more women in public sector bodies.

Dozens of FWS and other gender critical campaigners, who argue that biological sex cannot be changed, cheered with joy after the ruling, hugging and crying outside the court.

“This has been a really, really long ride,” said Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, adding the campaigners were “enormously grateful for this ruling”.

“Today, the judges have said what we always believed to be the case: that women are protected by their biological sex,” she said, adding “women can now feel safe that services and spaces designated for women are for women”.

Ahead of the verdict, trans rights activists raised concerns that a ruling in favour of FWS could risk discrimination against trans people in their chosen gender.

“The court is well aware of the strength of feeling on all sides which lies behind this appeal,” Hodge said, recognising the fight of women against sex discrimination, as well as a “vulnerable” position of the trans community.

    – Single-sex spaces –
At the heart of the legal battle were clashing interpretations of the Equality Act.While the Scottish government argued that the Equality Act (EA) afforded trans women with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) with the same protections as a biological female, FWS disagreed.

In its judgement, the Supreme Court ruled that the devolved Scottish government’s “interpretation is not correct” and that the Equality Act was inconsistent with the 2004 Gender Recognition Act which introduced GRC certificates.

According to the judges, allowing for the Scottish government’s interpretation would “cut across the definitions of man and woman” in the Equality Act “in an incoherent way”.

And, single-sex spaces and services including changing rooms, hostels and medical services “will function properly only if sex is interpreted as biological sex”, the judgement added.

Despite underlining protections from discrimination, the ruling will be a blow for transgender women and their ability to access single-sex spaces — a significant contention in the polarised debate on trans rights.

    – Online discourse –
The debate has been particularly vicious in the UK, pitting gender critical activists against trans rights campaigners and often resulting in bitter, even hateful discourse.

One of the most prominent supporters of gender critical campaigns is “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling, who lives in Scotland and has been the target of hate but also been accused of transphobia.

The ruling also comes at a time when transgender rights are under threat in the United States under President Donald Trump.

Since retaking office, Trump has declared the federal government would recognise only two sexes, male and female, sought to bar trans athletes from women’s sports and curbed treatments for trans children.

The latest UK ruling could pile pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government — which has remained largely silent on trans issues since coming into power last July — to further clarify legislation.

The opposition Conservative administration had blocked Scottish legislation to make gender change easier in 2022 and has supported the clarification of sex as biological sex rather than assumed gender.

  • Benue: 13 killed, 50 houses burnt in Otobi Akpa attack

An attack on the Otobi Akpa community in Benue State on Tuesday evening left at least 13 people dead, several others injured or missing, and over 50 houses destroyed.

The violence reportedly began around 6:00 p.m. near Otobi Junction when armed herdsmen launched an assault on the town. Eyewitnesses said that sporadic gunfire created panic, causing residents to flee for safety. Unfortunately, several people were caught in the crossfire and lost their lives, while others sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Local sources say the absence of community vigilantes—many of whom had travelled to a neighboring village for a burial—contributed to the attackers’ unchallenged entry into the area.

According to residents, the attackers used weapons including firearms and machetes during the assault. Some of the victims were reportedly targeted in their homes, while others were attacked while trying to flee. At least 14 bodies have so far been recovered and taken to the mortuary, though the search for missing persons is ongoing.

Community elder Adikwu Ogbe, expressing sorrow over the incident, said Otobi Akpa has historically been a peaceful part of Idoma land and had coexisted with herding communities for many years. He noted, however, that tensions have risen in recent times over open grazing and related security concerns.

Three weeks prior to this attack, a security guard at the Otukpo Dam was reportedly killed during a nighttime incident in the area.

As of the time of this report, no security personnel were visibly present in Otobi Akpa. Many residents have begun relocating to nearby areas for safety, and several are currently taking refuge at the Federal Government College in Otobi.

Benue State Deputy Governor, Sam Ode, visited the affected community alongside a contingent of security operatives to commiserate with victims and assess the situation. He assured the residents that the government is taking steps to prevent further violence and restore peace to the area.

The atmosphere in the community remains tense, and residents continue to flee due to fears of additional attacks.

Nnewi murder: Anambra CP sets up team to monitor Agunechemba operatives

AWKA – Following the tragic killing of a woman during a traffic gridlock in Nnewi on Tuesday, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has established a special team to monitor the activities of Agunechemba, the new state government security outfit. One of its operatives is allegedly responsible for the fatal shooting.

According to eyewitness reports, the incident occurred at Ibeto Junction, where motorists were stuck in a heavy traffic jam. Agunechemba operatives reportedly arrived at the scene and attempted to forcefully clear the road for their convoy. In the process, they began shooting indiscriminately, and a stray bullet struck a woman identified as Chiamaka Okeke, who later died at the hospital.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stated that the command had initiated immediate steps to identify the patrol vehicle and the personnel involved in the shooting.

Ikenga said: “We have escalated the matter to the leadership of Agunechemba to help identify the patrol teams that were in Nnewi on that day and the specific operative who discharged the firearm.”

He added that CP Orutugu has appointed a monitoring team, headed by DCP Mantu Chong, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Awka, to ensure all operatives maintain civility and adhere strictly to operational guidelines.

Ikenga continued: “The CP, on behalf of other security agencies, expresses gratitude to the state government and well-meaning individuals for their support. He also appreciates the coordinated efforts of the police and other security outfits in tackling crimes such as armed robbery and kidnapping, particularly during the Easter season.”

The Commissioner emphasized the force’s commitment to justice and accountability, highlighting that community policing and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms are in place for peaceful resolution of issues where applicable.

“We appeal for calm. The command is working closely with relevant security stakeholders to identify the suspect and ensure justice is served. Investigations are ongoing, and updates will be provided as events unfold,” Ikenga assured.

He concluded by reaffirming the police command’s resolve to continuously review operations and adopt new strategies to enhance public safety and security across Anambra State.
