‘Frank Mba is loyal, don’t drag him into Egbetokun’s tenure brouhaha’ — Reno Omokri

Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s ex-media aide, Reno Omokri, has urged the public not to link Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Frank Mba, to the controversy surrounding the tenure of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

In a post on X on Tuesday, Omokri stated that after conducting his own inquiries, he found that Mba is content with his role as DIG and remains loyal to Egbetokun.

Egbetokun’s tenure has sparked debate over whether he should retire upon turning 60 in September 2024. However, Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, clarified that Egbetokun’s tenure remains valid for four years, beginning from his appointment on October 31, 2023.

Amid the controversy, some social media users have accused Mba, who hails from the South-East, of orchestrating opposition to Egbetokun’s tenure as a way to position himself as his successor. Others argue that Egbetokun’s extended stay is meant to block an Igbo officer from becoming IGP.

Mba, who was promoted to DIG in June 2023, is the most senior police officer from the South-East geopolitical zone.

Omokri condemned the speculation, warning that it could harm Mba’s career by misrepresenting him and creating unnecessary tension.

“I also found this to be such an open secret within police circles so much so that even close aides and friends of the IGP lay credence to the fact that Frank is probably the highest supporter of his boss, Egbetokun, amongst serving police officers,” Omokri said.

He stressed that the appointment of an IGP is the president’s prerogative and is not swayed by social media influence or sentimental arguments.

Omokri urged those who claim to support Mba to stop spreading misinformation, emphasising that Mba is focused on his duties and does not need unnecessary controversy jeopardising his career.
